Editorial Reviews
Unknown Prophets is a Twin Cities based hip hop group consisting of Big Jess (MC/Producer), MaD SoN (MC), and Willy Lose (DJ). Their classic debut album, "World Premier" (2000), introduced them to the underground hip hop scene. World Premier featured an array of hard hitting, classical influenced tracks along with appearances by local greats Slug, DJ Abilities and Brother Ali.
By 2002 Unknown Prophets had established themselves as one of the top hip hop artists from the Twin Cities. They had been featured in the May 2001 issue of Interview Magazine, received rave reviews from numerous critics and had been increasing their fan base with each step. In February of 2002 they released their highly anticipated sophomore LP, "Now You Know." The release party resulted in two sold out shows at the 7th Street Entry/ First Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. Now You Know showcased a more soulful side of Big Jess' production skills along with a definite maturity in lyrics. NYK also featured three of underground hip hops most respected wordsmiths, Eyedea and Musab of RSE and manCHILD of Mars ILL. NYK was considered one of the most versatile releases of 2002 and the joint "Sorry" was said to be one of underground hip hops most sincere and mature songs ever recorded.
Shortly before the release of Now You Know the UPs, along with Bobby Hatfield and Gamble, formed the label N.E. Time Ent. In September of 2002, N.E. Time Ent. released a double-disc compilation entitled "Welcome to Northeast". The 2-CD set is compiled of over 30 tracks and features appearances by Lolo Kee, Rachel Black, 6-1-$tew, Brent Snyder, Heather Hatfield, Chuck U, and DJ X-Caliber. You'd be hard-pressed to find a double-disc compilation that matches up to the variety and dopeness of this album.

A few inches closer to being known.......2006-02-28
This EP is definitely different than one of there full-length's. They usually jam pack those with 70-80 minutes of material. The range of lyrical topics go from bragging and boasting, stories, life experience, family life, tragedies, the need to be heard (and reach the masses), and Independence. They come with very conscious and heartfelt lyrics. "The W.E.T. EP" simply doesn't have enough time to fit all these elements in (clocking in at about 33 minutes). "Look At Us Now" and the show favorite "Just Like You" seem to standout nicely. The best track has got to be "Writer's Block", which boasts a very addictive chorus intertwined with the vocals of Brent Snyder. A man that would be more prominently featuring in their later works.
If you think that the Unknown Prophets don't have much to offer this genre, then think again. Just because you haven't heard of them (I'm guessing), doesn't mean they have less substance or talent. Jump on the band wagon before they go broke (or get huge).
