Album Description
Hayley Westenra's new album Odyssey was always going to be a different proposition to Pure, the record-breaking 2003 collection which marked her international debut. A lot has happened to the young New Zealander over the past two or three years--and those changes are clearly reflected by a record which encapsulates her growth from a budding teenage prodigy into a mature young woman. Now, at 18, Hayley is ready to show the world how much she has grown up, both as an artist and as an individual. Fans of Pure will be pleasantly surprised by her new album. Her wonderful voice retains its crystal-clear purity, but Westenra's singing is now richer and more rounded than before. Touring the world and singing in some of its greatest concert venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, has worked wonders for her confidence. Suitably emboldened, she has embraced an even wider range of musical styles including classical, hymns, folk and pop. "I was happy with Pure at the time, but I've moved on so much," says Hayley. "It's really exciting to have something new out there for people to listen to. I wanted to make a record that represented me as a person. And I think I've improved as a vocalist." Variety is certainly one of the keywords with Hayley's new album. When she first entered a recording studio in New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Westenra restricted herself to classical pieces and show tunes. Now, in addition to impressive takes on classical works, Hayley uses her new album to perform an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and has arranged and written much of the material. "I like to push myself, and I'm now confident enough to try different things. I have been much more involved behind the scenes with this album--I wanted to put my individual stamp on each song." With her career stretching out promisingly before her, Hayley is also keen to continue experimenting. She is still primarily a classical crossover artist but she also wants to keep broadening those musical horizons. Three years after her international debut CD, Hayley Westenra is still pure: she exudes pure quality and she remains pure class--but her musical journey continues with her new album Odyssey.Customer Reviews:

During one of the "interludes" on My Life, Keith Murray is rapping about "Grab your cranium for my ultimatum," when someone in the studio control booth asks producer Chucky Thompson, "Hey, Chuck, put on some of that smooth [stuff]." Murray disappears; the dreamy synth chords of Blige's title track emerge, and her sultry voice moans with a combination of weary loneliness and unslaked desire. The ballad which follows is "smooth" but never slick, for the singer's sinuous, extended notes confess the blues even as they yearn for something better. It's tempting to see this little scenario--the rapper being turned off in favor of the soul diva--as a repudiation of hip-hop in favor of old-fashioned R&B. An honest listen to this album, however, makes such an interpretation impossible. Blige does no actual rapping herself on her long-awaited second outing, but the sound of "My Life" would have been impossible without hip-hop. The results confirm the promise of Blige's '92 debut; she is the premier soul diva of the hip-hop generation. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:

Given Luther Vandross's precarious state of health at the time of its release, Dance With My Father's title track--a tale of yearning for a lost loved one--takes on added poignancy. It's something of a centerpiece on an album that moves in several directions, reaching for varied constituencies, while ultimately staying focused on Vandross's trademark buttery vocals. In addition to "Dance," there's more adult-contemporary balladry ("Buy Me a Rose"), lightly sassy soul ("If I Didn't Know Better"), and a number of collaborations with hip-hoppers that often work surprisingly well. While suspending disbelief is hard when considering Luther and Foxy Brown as a couple ("If It Ain't One Thing"), remakes of soft-R&B classics with Beyonce Knowles and Busta Rhymes prove to be highlights. With the Destiny's Child singer, Vandross actually improves on the familiar Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway take of "The Closer I Get to You," turning in a cut that recalls his slow-burning signature reworking of "A House is Not a Home." A languid turn at "Lovely Day," with a purring Busta, works almost as well. (The "Part II" remix is superfluous, however.) Otherwise, Dance is in the vein of post-`80s Vandross discs, and guaranteed to please fans. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Luther's Last Gift To Us.......2007-01-10
Dance with My Father is by far the greatest CD .......2006-07-02
The people who appear on this CD are inspirational and come across in ways that never caught my attention before. Beyonce is a treasure and has never sounded better to me, than when her voice blends so perfectly with Luther's voice. What they did with," The Closer I Get To You" is mind blowing!!! I never thought that song could be better than the original version! The bass was a great touch. If you never purchased a Luther Vandross CD before, don't miss this one!
A Few Bright Moments.......2006-03-03
The best songs on this album are "If It Ain't One Thing" with guest singer Foxy Brown, "Buy Me a Rose," "The Closer I get to You" with guest singer Beyonce Knowles, "Lovely Day" with guest singer Busta Rhymes, which may be the best song on this CD, "Dance with My Father," "Hit It Again" with Queen Latifah, and "They Said You Needed Me." These are only seven of the fourteen songs. Of these seven songs, four have featured artists. The problem I have with this album is that the rest of the music is average and unremarkable.
Luther managed to put enough power into the song "Dance with My Father" to gain the 2004 Grammy for "Song of the Year," deservedly so. This album also gained Vandross his fourth and final Best Male R&B Vocal Performance Grammy in 2004. This album was also Vandross's first to reach number one on the Billboard chart. This recognition is for the powerful music on this CD.
Luther Vandross has always been a crooner with an incredible ability to appeal to female listeners. I suspect that the better songs on this album will provide appeal to Luther Vandross's traditional fans and many casual fans. However, Luther Vandross failed to put himself into many of these songs, and the lack of inspiration shows. I recommend you borrow a copy of this album or listen to samples before buying it. Good luck!
Luther Vandross: Dance with my Father.......2005-09-19
Album: Dance with My Father
This album is a mix of Luther's old-school R&B combined with some of today's R&B. There are old and new artists feature with Luther. These artists add some new R&B and hip hop beats with Luther. Luther keeps his reputation of being romantic. This album can be played at dinner or in the bedroom. He still gives tips on how to treat a lady. He has a wide variety of topics on this album. There are songs of breaking up: If It Ain't One Thing, making up: Buy Me a Rose, and songs of making love: Hit It Again. Of course, he has songs about love in general: Right in the Middle, Think About You, and Lovely Day. One song that seems to stick out a bit on this album is the song that the album is named after: Dance with My Father. This song deals with the loss of his father and some of his great memories. He speaks to the lord and asks for one more dance.
This is a great album. The new artists add a great touch. Queen Latifah is featured on the track Hit It Again. Busta Rhymes appears on the tracks Lovely Day and Lovely Day Part II. Foxy Brown and Luther are a duet in If It Ain't One Thing. I love the mix of R&B and hip hop, but there are still great slow songs. Luther is great at describing feelings of love, and really knows how to express emotion.
If you like artists like Joe, Genuine, R. Kelly, and Kem. If you like old R&B as well as new with a little mix of hip hop, you will love this album. This is a great album for setting a mood for dinner or the bedroom. Parents beware of the track Hit It Again. It is a little promiscuous.

The combination of Mary J. Blige with strong material is one of the few guarantees of excitement in today's R&B world. Rather than stuff her lines with showy streams of notes like too many post-Patti LaBelle divas, Blige sings the song. Even when she breaks into melisma, it feels like the direct result of an overflow of emotion and not the bad habit of a vocalist steeped in It's Showtime at the Apollo! Like the 1994 My Life, Share engages in lots of self-affirmation in between its bouts with drama, fate, and the enemies of love--especially when the star takes pen in hand, as on "Keep Your Head." As if to confirm Blige's toughness, the strongest cut here is Babyface's over-it "Not Gon' Cry." --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Amazon.com essential recording
After fumbling around with producer-from-hell Steve Albini on Rid of Me (1993) and signing with U2 manager Paul McGuinness, Polly Jean Harvey is ready to live up to her lethal early promise at last. With its growling bass tones, "Meet Ze Monsta" sets the stage early on as Harvey explores her feminine psyche with an intensity and raw power unheard since Patti Smith's heyday. Unlike the terminally inconsistent Smith, however, Harvey plots a brilliant course through slippery laments ("Working for the Man"), corrosive testifying ("Long Snake Moan"), and fuzz-toned menace ("Down by the Water"). Skeptics who think Harvey can't outgrow her art-punk base are advised to cue up the flamenco-inflected, string-caressed "Send His Love to Me." --Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:
Perfection........2007-05-17
Something For Anyone to Love.......2006-11-04
A dark and ambient masterpiece.......2006-05-29
Gone are the days of the raw Albini produced sounds, this album has got a major blues vibe to it. I had heard the single "Down by the Water" and seen the video but yet I still wasn't prepared for this record. I wasn't prepared to fall in love with another PJ album, especially one that's such a departure from her beloved earlier works. But of course I did fall in love again and I think this album is her strongest work to date, both in songwriting and in use of instruments. Polly explores a darker range of topics with her lyrics this time around, especially in reference of a religious nature. Plenty of guitar, lush organs and standout vocals make for this dark, dense record. The ten tracks will take you on an intense musical journey and stretch your imagination, leaving you in awe of the complex yet spare sounds and its brutal melodrama will bring you to your knees.
We start off with the title track, "To Bring You My Love." This song to me is the only song reminisce of ROM on the record. It's a bit raw but in a moody kind of way. As soon as you hear Polly's voice you'll immediately sense this is a powerful song. What I love throughout this record is the usage of her vocals, clear and urgent, Polly's singing is impeccable.
"Meet Ze Monsta" is a crazy restless song. It's all over the place, I imagine a very strong woman trying to fight a "big black monsoon" but of course she loses and eventually gives in to suicide to "meet ze monstra." Over a quarrel with her lover. Alls fair in love and war.
"Working For The Man" is a strange, strange song. In a good way. It is very sinister, PJ's somber vocals very effective in lending to the eerie effect of the song. I think this song is about a psychotic serial killer who preys on women and insists he's doing well because he's "working for the man." You know, HIM.
"C'mon Billy" is bluesy folk rock at its best. I love the acoustic guitar, the emotion the strings bring out of me and the desperate yearning of PJ's voice here. A very heartfelt plea from a very desperate woman for the father of her son to return and lay with her on golden cornfields for days on end.
"Teclo" is stranger still. I read in a magazine that PJ said Teclo is someone's name. I would've never guessed. Hearing this song makes me conjure images of angels, halos and God. I dunno why.
"Long Snake Moan" is awesome! I swear this song helps me curb my road rage. I shout along to the lyrics and instantly feel better, it's like a stress reliever of a song. This song makes me feel powerful and important because I can work voodoo and make mere mortals and even "God above, All drunk on my love..."
"Down By The Water" is the single off the album and one that actually did well on the charts, I think. It's a very catchy song, with the heavy steady keyboards, playful bells and the malevolent chorus, "Little fish, big fish swimming in the water/Come back here man gimme my daughter."
My favorite song on this album has got to be the very dark, "I Think I'm A Mother." Reason being, well, frankly I just don't understand the freakin' song and I long to find out! I'm fascinated with this song, from the slow opening of the guitar and the building of the drums to the nonchalant-ness of her voice as she sings something about wanting to have an abortion because she despises the mother-in-law. Wait, what?! I know, hence the fascination.
"Send His Love To Me" is very similar to "C'mon Billy" in that it's very folksy. A very heartfelt, beautiful song.
"The Dancer" is without a doubt the most passionate song I've ever heard. I dare anyone to come up with a more beautiful, soulful song! The swaying of the strings, the gut-wrenching
wails of her voice and the killer lyrics just leaves me begging for more:
He came riding fast like a phoenix side a fire flame
He came dressed in black with a cross bearing my name
He came bathed in light and the splendor and glory
I can't believe what the Lord has finally sent me
He said "Dance for me, fanciulla gentil"
He said "Laugh for awhile, I can make your heart feel"
He said "Fly with me, touch the face of the true God"
And then he cried with joy at the depth of my love...
Oh Lord, how that song kills me. And what a lovely way to end an epic of an album. At first I wasn't sure how to feel about the album but a listen is all it took for me to be very impressed indeed. 5 stars all the way.
"Let me ride on his grace for awhile...".......2006-05-03
Haunting Femininity.......2006-04-18
About half of these songs truly carve out a niche in your head with their immersive, overpowering qualities, while the other half seems to sort of cruise on autopilot..All in all, this is considered by many Polly Jean's seminal work, and it is for good reason..Songs like To Bring You My Love, Teclo, and The Dancer show Harvey at her most vulnerable, and most beautiful, qualities that this woman brings to the table better then most of her peers ever could.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Set the table, open the wine, light some candles. Slip on this disc. Let the gentle sounds of André Rieu's slippery fiddle and fur-tipped orchestra lull you with classical music's most memorable soothers, from "O Mio Babbino Caro" and "Plasir D'Amour" to the largo from Dvorák's New World Symphony and Nino Rota's "A Time for Us," which opens and closes the collection. Lightweight stuff, yes, but ingenuously arranged and performed, and the ribbon of reverb that surrounds the orchestra will please erstwhile Mantovani fans. --Jed DistlerCustomer Reviews:

Andre Rieu - Romantic Moments.......2006-08-31
Decent playing, lousy arrangements.......2005-11-11
Forget the hype, this is great music.......2005-08-04
Rhieu's arrangements (with Jo Huijts) have hints of "beautiful music" (think Ray Coniff) but only hints, and the result is very tasteful. For example, the piano obligato under the strings on "O mio babbino caro" makes you wish that Puccini had thought of that.
This is a wonderful album to listen to while relaxing and would make a great gift for someone who appreciates classical music but doesn't have specific preferences.

Everything about Bryn Terfel is over-life-size: his physique, his personality, his breath-control, and of course his extraordinarily beautiful voice. This recording displays his stunning vocalism and versatility to full advantage, but its title belies its content. Alhough it does include some simple pieces, the execution is fussy, overdone, and calculated for maximum external effect. The program ranges from Mozart, Pergolesi and pseudo-Bach to Sondheim in arrangements that are pure Hollywood, complete with throbbing strings and rolling drums, often destroying the spirit as well as the letter of the original compositions. It begins with Mozart's heavenly "Ave verum" arranged for baritone solo and chorus, frustratingly cut off after a few phrases (another setting of the same text by Karl Jenkins, written for Terfel, is more satisfying, being complete and original). The splendid baritone Simon Keenlyside joins him here as well as in the opening number of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater;" originally for soprano and alto, this must be the baritones' revenge on female singers who usurp songs written for men, like Schubert's and Schumann's cycles. Franck's "Panis angelicus" also inexplicably becomes a duet; unfortunately, Terfel's and tenor Aled Jones' voices do not match. Bach-Gounod's popular "Ave Maria" is all swells and exaggerations. The rest of the program consists of folksongs, hymns, show and film tunes, inflated to operatic proportions and generally ending in a fade-out or a flourish. Even the title song is anything but simple. This record is not for purists who like their music performed the way the composer wrote it, but aficionados of great singing will love it. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:

A Heartfelt Offering Reminiscent of An Earlier Era.......2006-02-15
This recording is wonderful on many levels. The selections are an unusual mixture of classical sacred music, spirituals, hymns, Lieder, Austrian Christmas and Gaelic songs, musical numbers and movie theme songs harmoniously combined to touch the soul of the listener in a gentle ebb and flow of devotion, intensity and tenderness. All of these songs are beautiful in and of themselves and in his hands, we experience them anew.
Bryn Terfel sings with the commitment necessary to make the awesome challenge of simplicity look easy. To my way of thinking, he is the most communicative and articulate singer today, bar none. He is a poet who savors the sound, feeling and meaning of each and every word and marries it uniquely and faithfully to the music. He transports the listener into the life of a song and transfixes us each and every moment. His enormous talent is not overwhelming or distractive and is inextricably and wholly intertwined with the music. This is greatness and it is very, very rare today.
I like the inclusion of the choir in several of the numbers as it reflects on the nature and context of the songs. I am less fond of the selections with the guest soloists as I feel they do not match his ability to "get inside" a song. The orchestra and orchestations are sensitive and enhancing.
This recording is simply wonderful and should have a broad appeal. It will move and inspire the believer, satisfy and fulfill the otherwise spiritual, calm the troubled and renew a flagging soul.
