5 out of 5 stars Glorious Times.......2006-12-31

For those unfamiliar with the band, Ramesses was formed by the rhythm section from Electric Wizard, Tim Bagshaw and Mark Greening, who are now joined by Adam Richardson. The band is unbelievably heavy in ways that Electric Wizard never was. We Will Lead You To Glorious Times takes the heaviest, most brutal, evil, and dark aspects of Electric Wizard and amplifies them exponentially. This album totally blew me away. Most times, I am not a fan of the "cookie-monster" type growling vocals, but they fit perfectly amongst the super-low bass and heavy guitar riffs on this album. If you enjoy Electric Wizard, and think that Dopesmoker was their best record, than Ramesses should be right up your alley. Prepare to be pleasantly surprised.

5 out of 5 stars Emotional Explosion.......2006-06-13

I hate to be the one to inform the critic from England that refers to this band as Ramasses because the band is in all actuality, Beaten Back To Pure! BBTP is an exceptional band with the one and only Vocals of Ben Hogg. I have all of BBTP's Albums and I will tell you the band is one of a kind! Their sound is original with Screaming Maddness and Firey Guitar Riffs verging on insanity! If you can't handle Deep Throated Vocals coupled with Angry Apprehension, I suggest you move on! This band is not for the weak at heart nor for those without a spine, who find themselves appeased listening to the likes of Britney Spears. If you have insatiable ear that can only be quenched by the emotional explosion of Hard Core Metal, I suggest you BUY!

2 out of 5 stars A good idea poorly executed........2005-05-04

I want to get into this, I really do. In a live setting Ramesses destroy all those who stand before them. Channelling the might of their namesake's spirit into their spiralling, doomier-than-thou riffing. They create a wall of sound plumbing the depths of rumbling psychedelia to the point of sensory overload (it actually made the person I saw them with throw up). Their riffs are so grotesquely rotten you would swear someone in front of you had farted and the drumming so violent that the front row genuinely fear for their safety.

All this, apart from Mark Greening's fantastically innovative and spiteful skin pummelling (see the opening to Ramesses II), however, is lost on record. Billy Anderson's usually flawless production sounds a bit too muddy for my liking. I know its probably supposed to sound rough and grimy to complement the decomposing racket the band are thrashing out but it makes it hard to decipher guitar, bass and vocals. Yet despite the crushing nature of their filth-encrusted psych-doom they dont really get away with it.
Going for the balls-out brutal approach, preferring monolithic tsunamis of overdriven guitar abuse, means the intricacies of their red-eyed solos and torturously drawn out menace of the vocal delivery is all but buried under wave after wave of low-end destruction. This may sound fantastic, but after witnessing their otherworldly power in the live setting it seems a bit one dimensional.

Undoubtedly Ramesses are fantastic musicians with an unbelievably black yet morbidly entrancing brand of drug addled sludge mayhem to unleash on the worlds ears. And I probably sound like a pissed off Electric Wizard fan who begrudges those who left the mighty `Wizard to explore pastures older and more decaying. And to an extent that's true. Electric Wizard appreciate texture, space and even ambience as part of doom's mighty template. Ramesses, much like the tanks on their cover art, on the other hand, are death incarnate. Cold, rancid, lumbering, unfeeling and inevitable. This apocalyptic misanthropy may well be their interpretation of modern doom but others do it better (Rwake, Khanate, Hyatari) and I prefer something a bit more groovy when I skin up.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2004-01-23

Agiel is one of the best bands I've personally ever lived downstairs from. Mike is one of the best guitarists i've ever met and James ain't a bad singer either, even though he never sang for me. Anyway, if you like this album, you should hear their new stuff that's going to be released soon. Mike's really breaking new ground with it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Death Metal.......2003-02-26

What can I say; this is easily one of the most technically impressive and musically engaging metal CDs I have heard in the past few years. I consider it to be on par with some of the finer works of the genre. I would encourage any fan of death metal to at least listen to this.

    4 out of 5 stars Road music.......2003-11-02

This is an awesome CD. If they would have added one or two songs from Northern Failures this CD would be perfect. It's very close to it, though. A perfect CD for driving across the plains. Just wait till you get past the Mississippi- then let this play, and drop the hammer.

4 out of 5 stars Plug into the skyhorse jams..........2003-03-21

This is one of two recordings released around the same time, the other being Northern Failures on Hydra Head recordings. This one is the better of the two, but both are well worth picking up. The riffs are huge, the vocals are angry, the drums pound, they take you on a journey to where bands like Fu Manchu, Kyuss, etc go, with respect to southern rock. Imagine if the Allman Brothers got angry instead of reflective and replaced all their departed members with those of Black Sabbath circa 1978. Not to say that Cable doesn't make this sound their own, where some maybe tempted to call this "Stoner Rock", truth be told, there needs to be a new genre, "Cable Rock!" But if you love bands from Man's Ruin, or Tee Pee, who tend to walk down the same path, you'll be more than happy with this gem. You can't keep a good band down...

At first I thought the album was alright. Good, but nothing great. I took a few more listens and it's really grown on me. Really good sound quality really brings the heaviness home. The riffs are definitly fatter, or at least more fatter than previous. No one particular track really stands out over the other, they are pretty much all good.

A fantastic evolution of Sourvein's style. I highly recommend it.

        3 out of 5 stars .......2005-09-05

Melodic Black Metal with Death Metal influences is how this release can be best described as. It is a very atmospheric record, but the atmosphere itself doesn't eclipse the vigorousness of the music. While the guitars play the role as the main carriers of a song, the keyboards are up there most of the time as well maintaining an equilibrium and adding serene segments that sound beautifully majestic. The album is divided in four parts and there's 16 songs in total, some of them being short ambient instrumental interludes that serve as bridges between the heavier compositions. The orchestrated fantasy-like pieces are one of the best features about this album, but that's because I'm a big fan of the older Satyricon/Bal-Sagoth epic scores that characterized their older albums. Expect a nice blend of harmless black metal with lots of melody. If you're into the above elements I described you will be pleased by what these guys are offering. If extreme brutality and over the top speed is what you're looking for, search elsewhere.

Negative Reaction is one of the heaviest bands around today, using feedback as a hammer and the guitars tuned to A as the stake. Don't be alarmed though, this band writes songs with feeling and heart to match creativity and give the listener one hell of a time. They can tear through a fast number as well as a slow one, which will make you think you're listening to a combination of Grief, Black Sabbath and Napalm Death.
