As Richard Thompson explains in his typically droll annotation, 1000 Years of Popular Music came about after Playboy asked various musicians to rank their top ten songs of the millennium. While most dipped no farther back than a few decades--a century at most--Thompson's musical memory rose to the challenge. The result is this concert set's encapsulation of 22 songs that trace a musical progression from the Middle Ages through Britney Spears, with Judith Owen and Debra Dobkin providing spare instrumental and rich vocal support. Released as a concert DVD with two audio CDs, the selection is irrepressibly idiosyncratic, from rounds, madrigals, and British balladry that recall Thompson's early days in Fairport Convention through the music-hall singalong of "I Live in Trafalgar Square" to dips into the songbooks of the Kinks ("See My Friends"), Squeeze ("Tempted"), and Bowling for Soup ("1985"). Among the highlights are the soulful tenderness of the 17th century's "Bonnie St. Johnstone," a haunting "Shenandoah," a samba arrangement of Cole Porter's "Night and Day," and a deliriously rocking rendition of the Easybeats' "Friday on My Mind." --Don McLeese

Album Description

Single DVD with Two Audio CD's This latest Richard Thompson release, 1000 Years of Popular Music, actually contains songs from the 11th Century, miners songs and even…"Oops! I Did it Again!" All songs are performed by a trio, with Thompson on acoustic guitar and vocals, Debra Dobkin on percussion, and songstress Judith Owen adding vocals. "The idea for this project came from Playboy Magazine - I was asked to submit a list, in late 1999, of the ten greatest songs of the Millennium. Hah! I thought, hypocrites - they don't mean millennium, they mean twenty years - I'll call their bluff and do a real thousand-year selection. My list was similar to the choices here on this CD, starting in about 1068, and winding slowly up to 2001. That they failed to print my list among others submitted by rock's luminaries, is but a slight wound - it gave me the idea for this show, which has been performed occasionally, and will hopefully receive a few more airings. The idea is that Popular Music comes in many forms, through many ages, and as older forms get superceded, sometimes the baby is thrown out with the bathwater - great ideas, tunes, rhythms, styles, get left in the dust of history, so let's have a look at what's back there, and see if still does the trick. What appears on this CD is a performance, rather than a chronological, distillation of several different shows - hence some gaps in the 17th and 18th centuries, and too much weight on Music Hall and Rock & Roll - we just felt that some performances weren't quite captured - perhaps on Part Two?"

For all Richard Thompson fans this is a real treat. The vocals by Judith Owen and Debra Dobkin are great. Excellent all around!

5 out of 5 stars 1000 Years of GREAT Popular Music.......2007-01-04

I was invited to see this show at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston when it came to town. I'm a big Richard Thompson fan, but I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this "survey"of a thousand years of popular music. I needn't have worried. From start to finish, this is an entertaining, even startlingly entertaining show, and the people who filmed it did an excellent job of capturing it. Richard's guitar playing is terrific, and his singing is some of the best he's ever done, perhaps prompted by the demands of some of the material. Nothing here sounds pedantic, and nothing is boring. Richard's dry wit is in evidence throughout. The special treat is how much music comes out of three people, and here Richard is ably served by Judith Owen on vocals and occasional keyboard and Debra Dobkin on vocals and drums/percussion. One of the things I took away from the performance I saw was how INTO the music these three were on stage, and the DVD brings that right back.

I urge anyone who has gotten as far as considering this package to relax, stop considering it, buy it, and enjoy.

The package contains a DVD of the show and two CD's of the music, along with a short booklet about the show concept and the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Thompson the alchemist turns poo to gold..........2006-09-28

This project originated out of rejection. A true non-reflection of life if ever one existed. Once upon a time, Playboy coveted Thompson's list of "the millenium's best songs". That is, until they saw it. This list included such chart toppers as "Sumer Is Icumen In" from 1260, "King Henry V's Conquest of France" from the 15th century, "Blackleg Miner" from the 19th century, and the bizarre Nat King Cole swinger "Orange Colored Sky". Then reality inverted. One of the least curmudgeonly magazines greeted Thompson's list with an icy silence. Perhaps they felt that those musty old songs would clash with the eternal blaze of naked airbrushed youth? Unflinching, Thompson turned to an art older than some of this set's songs: Alchemy. He miraculously turned what Playboy construed as poo into gleaming bullion. This shaft truly led to gold. So much so that Thompson has hit the road with his "1000 Years of Popular Music" twice.

Music is dang old, after all. Greeks and Romans rocked out. Medieval madrigals, armed with lutes and windpipes, pranced through verdant forests. Even Victorians danced. So why relegate hundred of years of great tunes to the sadly cobwebbed "early music" section? You know what they say: old songs never die, they just receive damning new retail categories. In defiance, Thompson dipped into this neglected slush pile of human all too human music and constructed a millenium set list that would make the Long Now Foundation proud.

Flanked by vocalist/keyboardist, and part mime, Judith Owen and percussionist/vocalist Debra Dobkin, the Thompson-led trio jiggle cochleas through musical history. They open with one of humanity's oldest songs: "Sumer Is Icumen In". A celebration of the rebirth of spring, it also includes a middle english word for "fart". Now that's history. The group sing it as a round (during tour one of "1000 Years" Thompson sang it solo). Next, lone Thompson conjures up the events leading to the battle of Agincourt in a fifteenth century song. France-bashing apparently has a longer history than the 2003 U.S. Congress realized. "Freedom Toast" is nothing! Try Agincourt! This beautiful song retells the affront the French handed to the young King Henry V: three tennis balls for him to "play with". No king would take that. Henry didn't. Thompson then switches to Italian for the amazing "So Ben Mi Ca Bon Tempo". A truly unforgettable song that will even get feet encased in concrete tapping.

Following a few incredible songs dealing with infanticidal mothers, eternal punishment, and Missouri rivers, "Blackleg Miner" exposes the history of "scab" songs. Women won't even look at the Blacklegs. A nasty lot, indeed. Time whizzes by as the hilarious down-and-out "I Live in Trafalgar Square" and a Gilbert and Sullivan tune close out the nineteenth century. Don't miss the high "C" in the Mikado's "Bellow Of the Blast". Thompson and Owen show us just what vocal cords were made for. "Java Jive" introduces the jazzy twentieth century with a smooth pean to caffeinated drinks.

The twentieth century focuses on rock music, with a few exceptions. On the DVD, when Thompson introduces the act's single country song, "A-11", he responds to the unenthused stillness by saying "I can tell we're no longer in Texas". Some head turning surprises pop out in the second half of the set (on CD number two). The Kinks' haunting "See My Friends" and Australia's rollicking "Friday On My Mind" will make musical antennas erect. And then the evening's biggest blast, "Oops!... I Did it Again", made famous by Britney Spears, will shock those who disparage pop music as inane trash. Thompson proves beyond doubt that the song has merit. His final dance moves on the DVD justify the price alone. Prepare thy brain. Leaving Britney behind, the gang bursts into 2001 with "1985", a ridiculously catchy pop song about a sentimental and uncool mom. After that auditory explosion, Thompson leaves the audience hissing with the a capella "Sam Hall". The DVD's final scene shows Thompson waving his fists at the audience. A great closing to an amazing show. A thousand years later and we've arrived. That'll show Playboy.

This DVD and CD set captures the second "1000 Years" outing. Thompson's website offers a CD of the first tour. Enough changes from the two sets to justify getting both. But this set also contains a fabulously produced DVD. Thompson's stage banter gets cut from the CD, but the DVD preserves every word. Listen for the great joke about european stereotypes ("In heaven the English answer the door..."). The DVD also includes snatches of a Thompson interview, soundcheck, and the band's grand entrance. No Thompson fan should miss this set. Even people with a vague interest in music history should check it out. Thompson, now in his fifties, proves that age only encumbers the uncreative. "1000 Years of Popular Music" stands comfortably next to his best work. Not bad for a rejection.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Magic.......2006-08-17

I've watched this show every night since it arrived three weeks ago. It's not just the excellent production, the sheer talent and huge versatility of the performers. This show has some magic ingredient. Utterly captivating.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Thompson live DVD that really clicks.......2006-07-01

The first two Richard Thompson live dvd's were marred by slightly uninspiring song selections and fairly basic camera work. But third time's the charm - this lovely dvd presentation of Thompson's "1000 Years of Popular Music" show is simply one of the most essential items in his entire catalogue - along with "Henry the Human Fly", "I Want To See the Bright Lights Tonight", "Shoot Out the Lights", "The Old Kit Bag" and "Rumor and Sigh". And it's essential not only for Thompson fans, but for just about anyone who's interested in the history of popular music. Starting with old English folk song "Summer is a-cumming in" (which was also sung at the climax of 70s horror movie classic The Wicker Man), and ending with a version of "1985" (a download hit for the group Bowling for Soup a few months prior to this recording) and in between covering everything from English music hall, Gilbert & Sullivan, jazz standards and merseybeat - this is a wonderful selection of haunting songs. No, you won't find any of Richard Thompson's legendary electric guitar workouts on here, and you won't find any of his own songs, even though many of them could have matched the timeless quality of the great stuff that IS on here - but the dvd DOES manage to present Thompson as one of the most plain enjoyable live performers in the world. And it's all packaged in a lovely box with artwork, song notes and two bonus cd's. Now if only they'd do a presentation of Thompson's OWN song catalogue in this format - and that's a hint, in case any of the people responsible for this great set happen to be reading this.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning CD.......2003-04-19

Essentially, an amazing lesson on who's who in hip-hop. Quality tracks by hip-hop pioneers and innovators, as well as a few pleasent surprises, make this an excellent buy. Solid grooves and tight basslines make the CD what it is. Classic old school cuts like Tone-Loc, NWA and House Of Pain are instantly recognizable, as is the remake of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way". Also featured prominently are early tracks of classic gangsta rappers. Snoop Dogg's "What's My Name" is probably my favorite song on the disc. It's an amazing party song with a killer groove. 2Pac's "California Love" is a rap classic, and it shines here. Dr. Dre's breakout single "Nuthin' But A G Thang" still remains a quality song, and is a perfect addition to the CD. Even better though are the more artistic cuts scattered throughout the disc. Arrested Development's soulful Tennessee was an excellent choice. Outkast's early Southern hit "Player's Ball" is probably one of my top favorites on the disc. But the real surprise was the Digable Planet track "Rebirth Of Slick". A cool beat combined with the lyrical strength of the trio lets the song speak for itself. The track is definitely one of the highlights. I would definitely recommend this CD. It is an amazing collection.

5 out of 5 stars Revisit the 80's (without the bad hair).......2004-11-17

Let's be honest- you've missed new wave. You might have denied it, might have said, "I like my male rock stars macho, scruffy, and atonal," or "I love me some coy, hyper-sexualized girlie pop stars!" But why not go back to 80's- when you could get both affected masculinity and unabashedly feminine romance from your musicians, all at once! Men sang yearning ballads about women (Duran Duran's "Rio," for example), while wearing eyeliner. And talk about your pop hooks! Just because they're layered with synthesizers doesn't mean they're not incredibly catchy (like "You Might Think," by the Cars). You say you were never really into the genre, huh? Did you ever see an 80's movie? Even one? These are all classic songs, and even if you don't recognize the titles- "She Blinded Me With Science," and "I Melt With You," for starters- you'll recognize the music.

You could argue that this collection isn't complete without the Police, or the Talking Heads, but the songs listed here fit with the role MTV played in new wave music. But hey, dude, no need to have a cow. Put on this awesome cd and enjoy some classic pop. Hairspray optional.

5 out of 5 stars It will melt with you.......2000-06-14

This is one of the greatest 80's New Wave colections i have. Although Im only 13 me and my friends enjoy this CD so much. I listen to it every day and never get sick of it. Takes on me and blinds me with science, i ran so far away so ooo hold me now hold my hole entire heart. I can't wait to bring it to Rock 'n' Roll high school!

5 out of 5 stars an awesome cd.......2000-04-26

If you like good music, this cd is definatly for you. My favorite is "How soon is now" by the Smiths. That is a really great song, any fan of the 80's will love that song, as well as many of the other great songs on this album. "True is a really good one, as are Duran Duran, Howard Jones, A-Ha and many of the other artists. fans of 80's music: Get this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Great all around.......2000-03-09

5 out of 5 stars a huge surprise.......2001-01-13

If you really love to listen to r&b music, then this cd is definitely for you. It has songs from the late 80s to the late 90s. I love Bobby Brown, Lisa Stansfield,Brian Mcknight, etc.I actually bought this CD for one of my coworkers and she loved it!

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Great Collection.......2000-02-19

These types of collections are usually good for a few songs that one might then tape or re-burn on another CD. But based on a tip from a review, I bought this one, and it's suprisingly excellent -- like getting a superb party tape of (mostly) '90s R&B from a DJ friend. Pretty high quality throughout, and even the songs that got played to death on radio (Never Gonna Get It, Been Around the World, etc) sound good mixed with other lower key (but excellent) songs from Brandy, Aaliyah, Jodeci, Blackstreet, etc. A couple of songs seem out of place or don't fit (Tina Turner's What's Love Got To Do With It, Brian McKnight's ballad), but overall great stuff, ending with Boyz II Men's killer "End of the Road".

5 out of 5 stars Great Mix from the history of R&B.......2000-01-21

This CD is awesome. The songs range from 1984 to 1998, and it brings out the best in R&B. From Boyz II men's"End of the road", and R.Kelly's "Bump n'grind" this CD is great. Also "Anytime""This is how we do it", and "No Diggity" are real good.

4 out of 5 stars A very good mix.......2000-01-03

I though it was a very good mix and I really recomend it to any long term fan of R&B. It's a real shine from MTV.

5 out of 5 stars Retro pop from the 60s-70s.......2006-04-11

No doubt the best conglomeraltion of pop, garage, psychodelic music. Crisp harmonics, showey power chords, melodic 12-strings. Voices rich in blend and pitch. Good CD to round out your collection.

4 out of 5 stars I love this band!.......2006-02-24

The Grip Weeds are a great band from New Jersey. They have a very timeless sound and almost all of their music is great. I was just given this CD for my birthday, and I know it will always be one of my favorite gifts forever. Their music reminds me just a little bit of The Hollies, and the singers' (Kurt & Rick Reil) bring back the great sound of the Beatles. As a reviewer on rainbowquartz.com says, "If you are a psych-pop fan who likes the psych to be a bit stronger than the pop, you should give this a whirl."
This is a great album by The Grip Weeds. As far as I'm concerned, NOBODY'S music collection is complete without this band's albums.
Also check out their new album "Giant On The Beach".

4 out of 5 stars HELL OF A TRIP!!!.......2006-01-24

If you don't like "alternative" (i.e.: "watered-down" punk/metal/??), then forget this collection. If you have fond memories of the 90's or appreciate its combination of excessive rebellion and good-heartedness and think of it as a more recent (although perhaps pointless) happenstence of what was occuring in the late '60's and early '70's, you'll LOVE this combination. "Round Here" is hands down one of my fav. Counting Crows tunes (along w/ "A Long December", which made me cry when hearing it shortly after graduation and realizing I'd probably never meet my "true-love" again since we never really "fell" in love with each other, but rather I admired her from a distance...) and also one of my FAVORITE SONGS of the 90's...the cover art of "Across A Wire: Live In New York" and "Round Here" go together like goth-pals..."Far Behind" reminds me of that little-known Greg Araki gem of a movie titled NOWHERE (although "Far Behind" wasn't on the soundtrack...) b/c of its vision of friendship gone astray and it's mirroring of rebellion etc.; "Right Here, Right Now" by Jesus Jones is kind of a left-field classic, period!...and "Been Caught Stealing" IS (if you argue with me I swear I'll death you!) A CLASSIC!!!!!! although i personally don't care of Jane's Addiction as a band...and so on and so forth. If you don't like this album, they probably weren't marketing it to people such as you...why the hell would MTV "First 1000 Years/Rock" put Led Zepplin and The Who on there? Leave that to Rolling Stone for Christ's Sake! Those guys are before MTV's time...New Wave and/or Alternative are the things that have kept the "rock" audience of MTV loyal...and who is anyone but the people who made the compilation and the holders of the copyright(s) of this compilation (not the songs on it) to question the title of the album? They can name this album WTF they want!!! If you think you're so cool to complain about that, why don't I Just start preaching at all you for buying an album with a reference to INCEST (remember Nirvana???). Or how 'bout crying on and on 'cause it just doesn't make any damn sense to call an album "Nevermind" except to annoy the hell of out of NITPICKERS!!!! I don't rate this 5 stars, 'cause although it's a damn good alternative CD, it still could have a been damn better album!! Amen.

1 out of 5 stars A Thoughtless and Random attempt at compilation.......2001-06-28

Admittedly, this album is not trying to document the history of rock. Instead, it's trying to generate some afterglow and some profits from a truly collection of media friendly bands that have shaped MTV over the past 15 years. The problem lies in the execution. Instead of bothering to think about their music selection and choose musical or visual pioneers, they seem to have chosen random tunes out of the first box they came across. This set lacks unity, passion, and most of all, meaning. You're better off finding your old "mix tapes" than bothering with this happenstance collection of tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding..........2001-04-01

I can't believe I bought this. A rock compilation from the people at MTV, whose musical vocabulary doesn't reach past NSYNC or Backstreet Boys? Not a good combination. I also do not believe that this compilation is worth calling "The first 1000 years." First 1000 years? More like the last ten years! First, music wasn't around 1000 years ago, but rather MTV decided to put it, because the super-duper millenium was coming to an end. And MTV, if you're going to make a compilation of the best rock songs of all time, leave Beck, Garbage, and INXS off of it. What happened to Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Who, Metallica, or even Nirvana? Are they not what you call the best rock of the past 1000 years? You might as well put Michael Jackson on this comp. I'm guessing that MTV wanted to make this compilation aimed at the younger generation, like everything else that MTV does. Songs by Metallica and Nirvana would scare away the pre-pubescent teenyboppers that surround MTV Studios everyday. The bottom line: DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT purchase this album. It's just another way for MTV to make money, and thats why this compilation, and MTV for that matter, is horrible.

1 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the worst rock compilation ever!.......2001-03-04

Why was this made? This sums up rock terribly and is a disgraceful attempt by MTV. They put some completely terrible music on here that I don't think anyone wants to remember!! Why is The Cult, Jesus Jones, Faith No More, and INXS on here? Those songs are terrible!!!!! There is no representation of any grudge,(except Candelbox which is the worst grudge band without question)punk, or metal. Of all that they had to chose from this is absolutely horrible! And the last track by The Pretenders, should not be on their for any reason! How about Led Zepplin or The Who? MTV has lost all of my respect, do not buy this album!!!!

3 out of 5 stars This album is okay not great.......2000-05-04

This album is okay but is selection of songs are not very good. I wish they had Metallica on the album or Alice In Chains, or Pearl Jam, Offspring on these albums because these four band's are all very good and they made an impact on the music scene during the last fifteen years.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-10-13

A passionate, moving, spiritual, uplifting selection of Russian church music presented by a variety of different groups and performers. I was happy with the sound quality. I have listened to this cd many times and always find new pleasures its powerful and joyful content.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent performance - but faulty recording.......2001-05-02

This CD brings us a true superproduction of excellent Russian liturgical music, exquisitely performed by a large choir of men and boys. But unfortunately many of the louder passages are plagued by severe overload distortion which detracts quite a lot from the listening joy. Without this technical flaw, this album would have earned 5 stars.
