More than four decades after its Broadway debut, the Roundabout Theatre's 2007 revival of 110 in the Shade is a glorious showcase for soprano Audra McDonald, and an eloquent statement for an underrated and neglected work. Based on N. Richard Nash's play The Rainmaker, 110 in the Shade tells the story of a Texas town stuck in a blistering heat wave. Lizzie (McDonald), the daughter of a local widower (Broadway veteran and TV star John Cullum), has resisted all suitors, including the sheriff (Christopher Innvar), until a potential huckster named Starbuck (Steve Kazee) arrives in town promising to bring rain ("The Rain Song"). Just like Marian the librarian, Lizzie thinks she sees right through the scam ("You're Not Fooling Me"). McDonald shines in her solos ("Love, Don't Turn Away," "Old Maid"), but Cullum, Innvar, and Kazee also get their moments either in duets with McDonald ("A Man and a Woman," "Simple Little Things," "Is It Really Me?") or by themselves. 110 in the Shade is obscure compared to Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's most famous work, The Fantasticks--none of its songs ever entered the popular culture like "Try to Remember"--but it's a beautiful, evocative score that is tailor-made for McDonald's rich voice. It's also much more sumptuous than The Fantasticks, even in Jonathan Tunick's pared-down, Tony-nominated orchestrations. (Also nominated were McDonald, Cullum, lighting designer Christopher Akerlind, and the show itself for Best Revival of a Musical.) P.S. Classics puts out its usual first-rate package, with color photos, introduction by Peter Filichia, synopsis, and libretto. --David Horiuchi

Description

Four-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald triumphantly returns to Broadway in the role she was born to play: Lizzie Curry in 110 in the Shade, Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt's heartrending musical adaptation of N. Richard Nash's classic play The Rainmaker. Amidst a heat wave in 1930's Texas, Lizzie - despite her wit, intelligence and homemaking skills - is on the verge of becoming an old maid, until a charismatic rainmaker named Starbuck enters town and her world is shaken. 110 in the Shade originally premiered in 1963 - Jones and Schmidt's first Broadway musical following their unprecedented off-Broadway triumph with The Fantasticks. Joining McDonald for the new Roundabout Theatre Company revival are two-time Tony Award-winner John Cullum and, fresh from Spamalot, Steve Kazee as Starbuck. PS Classics and the Roundabout previously collaborated on Grammy-nominated and top-selling recordings of Nine: The Musical and Assassins; this latest CD is sure to result in another definitive Broadway cast album, this time headed by one of Broadway's brightest crown jewels.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Audra is yet again, outstanding.......2007-07-26

I love this CD and all of the music is amazing. Audra does stand out but what else is new. Can't wait to see the show. Buy this CD and add it to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars 110 in the Shade.......2007-07-20

This recording is superb. I recently saw the show in NYC and found that this recording does the show justice. It is a great show and recording.

5 out of 5 stars Pure pleasure.......2007-07-19

Couple of days ago, I saw "110 in the Shade" on Broadway in the Roundabout Theatre revival. At intermission, in a trance of emotion, I went straight to the souvenir stand to buy the cast album (available at a non-ripoff price of $20, I'm glad to say). This is something I hardly ever do, but I had just seen and heard Audra McDonald and Christopher Innvar sing the duet "A Man and A Woman," and I had to have that music. Been playing the score ever since. It's a delight and I like the orchestrations very much. McDonald is an utter joy, but Innvar was an unexpected discovery and on the strength of his performance, should have had bigger billing.

4 out of 5 stars audra is definitive.......2007-07-18

Though the score of 110 IN THE SHADE is modest in musical scope, Audra McDonald sings it with all the passion, conviction and care that one could hope for. The other performances on the recording are good, especially Steve Kazee, whose Starbuck feels lighter and more expressive than Douglas Horton on the original cast recording. Bobby Steggert makes the most of every one of Jimmy's lines. Christopher Innvar sounds far better on this recording than he did in the theater. There is a great deal of dialogue on the CD, which may be more enjoyable to those who have seen the production than to the casual listener. The reduced orchestrations are in many cases more imaginative and expressive than the originals, which tended toward bombast in telling this intimate story. They often are reminiscent of Copland's "Appalachian Spring", and I would imagine that's not accidental. If you are an Audra lover, buy this immediately, you'll never hear a finer version of Lizzie's numbers than are offered here.

5 out of 5 stars 110 In The Shade Revival CD - Next Best Thing to Being at The Show.......2007-07-15

Any fan of 110 In The Shade will appreciate this recording; it is very well recorded and features the stunning vocal performance of Audra McDonald. This CD more than holds its own when compared to the studio cast version of 1997 and it is head and shoulders above the original cast recording of 1963.

If you have seen the recent revival at Studio 54, or you are a fan of the show, you will definitly want to have a copy of this CD

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

    Please buy it.

    5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Pure & Beautiful.......2005-10-31

If you buy no other classical music, buy this collection. CD 1 (Relax) is perfect for dinner, quiet entertaining or just soft music while you're working. From "Come Away With Me", to "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "Knights in White Satin"... each piece is it's own movement - and moved you will be... Perfect for a romantic evening. CD2 is more robust, but equally entertaining. "Layla", "Livin On A Prayer", Stairway to Heaven", "Run to You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" - you owe it to yourself to hear these licks performed by the RPO.

    5 out of 5 stars Symphonic Rock.......2005-07-25

It really isn't rock, but it is a very pleasant presentation of popular music, rendered in creative ways by a full symphony orchestra. It sounds like the orchestra had a great time making these CD's.

3 out of 5 stars pleasant easy listening.......2005-07-19

It's not extremely interesting music, but nice background, relaxing and pleasant with full orchestra. Not a bad buy at all!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2005-03-20

I received this as a present and at first I wasn't sure if I would like it because I don't like some of the original songs, but there's something about hearing the orchestra play that makes me like all of them. Just try it out.

5 out of 5 stars American Music of Hope and Glory.......2007-04-09

Although I have known about Sacred Harp Music for many years, this album utterly overwhelmed me in its power, beauty and expression of pure American strength and faithful surety. I grew up in the churches of Christ, one of the few American denominations that uses only a capella four-part harmony vocal music in their worship services. Shape notes were known to me since I was able to understand a musical staff, and we used shape notes for each note on the scale (a few more than The Sacred Harp Tradition). Alas, over time, the immense power and beauty of true Sacred Harp music was "homogenized" into congregational singing that remains quite beautiful, but no longer has the vigor of The Sacred Harp tradition. (The churches of Christ still, to this day, occasionally have "Sings" - an all afternoon singing festival with food and fellowship, as do Sacred Harp "Singing Classes" today). This album above all speaks - rather SINGS to the immense faith of Frontier America, and the absolutely majesterial beauty of music well-sung from the human heart, which is, of course, The "Sacred Harp". To any who want to experience a new (and very old) musical tradition, this recording will be one that you will never forget. All choral music singers and admirers should own this marvelous album. (Having a copy of the "1991 Sacred Harp Hymnal" in hand will make your enjoyment all the better!)

5 out of 5 stars Unbridled spiritual energy.......2005-01-01

Anyone who saw "Cold Mountain" and was struck by the vitality and energy of the hymn singing in that one brief scene in church will be immediately impressed with this stunning album. The album's only flaw is that, unfortunately, it does not include that hymn that was in "Cold Mountain" (it is titled "I'm Going Home").

Otherwise, it is pure joy to listen to. The singing is full of that same raw passion that makes it sound so primitive. I've heard other albums where the sound is polished, concert-hall like, and as a result very dead. This is not that way; it moves and stirs as good spiritual music ought to.

This is a new field of music for me, even though I've sung in church choirs for years and listened to all kinds of classical music. Hearing this album makes me want to go find the sheet music and start singing it myself, it is so infectious.

It covers the choice cut from the bands first four albums of the seventies -- Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main St., Goats Head Soup and It's Only Rock 'N' Roll. It has only been available briefly on CD in the mid Eighties and is long sought after by collectors. EMI. 2005.

2 out of 5 stars Could've been so much more..........2007-04-26

Basically, this is rushes through the Mick Taylor years, collecting a bunch of big hits that are already available elsewhere in the first place - except for Dance Little Sister, which never was all that good in the first place. Now, out of the remaning nine, eight are amongst my favorite Stones songs: Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Bitch (from the masterpiece Sticky Fingers), Tumbling Dice, Happy, Rip This Joint, Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) and It's Only Rock and Roll. Not an Angie fan, but that's just me. But this is a fine example of wasted potential otherwise. Moonlight Mile, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Rocks Off, Winter and Time Waits for None could all make claims at inclusion. But are they? No.
Now, these nothing-but-the-basics comps can work quite well when done right, which generally implies them covering a longer timespan than the four years Shade touches on. Take Hot Rocks - that one gets a decade of the basics perfectly. So does the recent Forty Licks, for that matter. However, this fails because there's too little.
The cover's, um... interesting. Could be a potshot at David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust days, or just the Stones being the Stones.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation.......2006-11-04

This is a great compilation from what was arguably the best era for the band musically. The only thing that I think should have been done differently was to take out "Rip This Joint" and "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo" and put in "All Down the Line" and "Star Star". But it's still a great compilation. Especially if you're, for one reason or another, unable to make your own compilations of songs.

    4 out of 5 stars Shady Deal.......2006-08-11

Please bear with me as I may ramble a bit- I have been a Stones fan forever, and Made in the Shade is the best of the Stones "best ofs" this side of Hot Rocks. The song selection defines the Mick Taylor era and how they are arranged really gives this disk great punch (Angie right into Bitch is great). This album was a favorite for all of my rowdy years and I wore out my LP. I was very excited to see the remastered release and just picked it up. I must say, despite what some other reviewers said, I picked up a wicked hiss on a couple of songs- Pretty disappointing; otherwise the mix is bright and crisp. Heartbreaker is amazing.

Now for the rant. Previous reviewers have mentioned this in a softer tone. These remastered disks have no oomph or extra anything. The Stones have repackaged everything to death to wring one last dime out of their fans. I wish that when they undertook the last remastering that they at least gave us liner notes. The thought of a couple of live cuts or rarities from the time of each album is much too much to expect. Rhino Records work with re-release and remastering is the benchmark- great liner notes, disks stuffed with extras. Heck, even the notoriously money grubbing Who put a few extras on their countless re-releases.

I know we will never get this with the Stones and I knew what I was getting with Made in the Shade, and sadly I got nothing more. So... It is a great disk with a great line-up of songs from a great time in the bands career. Find it cheap, it's worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Made in the Shade.......2005-12-09

I haven't listened to a lot of The Rolling Stones, in fact this is the first full album I've listened to by the group. But, it's a compilation of their first four albums and it's very well done.

    1. Brown Sugar-5/5-Interesting lyrics.
    2. Tumbling Dice-4/5-This song is OK.
    3. Happy-5/5-Great song, doesn't sound like Mick Jagger on vocals though.
    4. Dance Little Sister-5/5-Pretty cool song. It's catchy.
    5. Wild Horses-5/5-The lyrics are pretty good on this song. Vocals on the chorus are great as well.
    6. Angie-5/5-Awesome song.
    7. Bitch-4/5-(No Comment)
    8. It's Only Rock 'n' Roll-5/5-One of my favorite Rolling Stones songs.
    9. Ooo Ooo Ooo Ooo Ooo (Heartbreaker)-5/5-Great song.
    10. Rip This Joint-5/5-I love the title of the song...The song lives up to its title.

The cuts sound fine. Due to the super (as the Reardon review noted) remastering job by Bob Ludwig, there's more imaging and sharper overall sound. Worth the bucks! The "Memory Hotel." It never seems to close.

Ivy has always been my favourite band and I tend to await all of their albums and side projects with baited breath...

...and the newest Brookville release keeps this trend alive.

Ivy has always been masterful at capturing various moods, (especially those of the pensive, sun-setting on the horizon, stay indoors and read in bed type) and Life in the Shade spins a reflective and ambient tale from start to finish.

Highlights include the subtle horn-driven "Golden" and "Nothing's Meant to Last" in which he enlists some help from his wife and Ivy's lead singer Dominique Durand.

But the album in its entirety is comprised of flavourful arrangements and some of the best song-writing this side of Ben Lee which makes it one of 2006 best new releases.

4 out of 5 stars Classy melodic pop for discerning ears.......2006-09-03

Overall, Life In The Shade is a step forward from Brookville's previous CD, Wonderfully Nothing. Although Brookville's debut hit some very high points in songs like Summer Parade and This Is How It Ends, it was a little uneven.

Life In The Shade shows progress in almost every way. The songwriting is consistently good (except for the final two tracks, which never took for me). The production is better -- there were spots in Wonderfully Nothing that I thought were a little threadbare, and could use some sweetening. On Life In The Shade, Brookville knows when to add lushness and complexity, and they know when to lay back and let simplicity reign.

Most importantly, they know how to add drama and tension. So many bands I hear start out a song and continue at the same volume with the same instrumentation, grinding away without relief for four or five minutes. Brookville songs ebb and flow, build up and release, with a sense of intelligence -- a sense that the producers and mixers know how to communicate feeling to the listener with sonic variety, instead of monotony.

If you haven't heard Brookvillle, the following references might give you an idea of their sound. Andy Chase, the lead vocalist and chief songwriter, sounds perhaps like Art Garfunkel with a little less breathiness, a little more body. The songs have melodies and conventional rhythms. The lyrics are evocative, but not too concrete. A variety of acoustic and electric guitars and keyboards flesh out these tracks, and repeated listenings will reveal small embellishments, tricky little parts inserted here or there at a reduced level in the mix, adding texture and balance. Styles range from pop-rock to bossa nova. Most of the songs are mid-tempo, and the songs can be a little sad. Nothing edgy here, at least in the indie sense. For me, that's a good thing. Gone are the experimental electronic instrumentals which made up half of the first album.

This is a classy record. In a world of pop music that has moved increasingly toward simplicity, beat, and vulgarity, Brookville follows the course of restraint, melody, subtlety, and a little sentimentality. Probably a major label would have absolutely no use for this. So give Andy Chase credit. He started his own independent label, he co-owns a studio with Ivy bandmate Adam Schlesinger, and he can release whatever he deems worthwhile. The catalog number here is Unfiltered Records UNF-009. Other Unfiltered releases include the fantastic first EP and first two full length albums from Ivy. Let's hope for more quality from this little label, to entertain us as the four multinational music conglomerates concentrate on the lowest common denominator. Brookville certainly entertains, Life In The Shade is worthy of repeated listens, and honestly these guys should be producing other major musical acts. If I ruled the world, they would be.

5 out of 5 stars Andy Chase does it again.......2006-08-21

A great selection of mellow pop songs. Anyone who likes the songs with vocals from the first Brookville album, "Wonderfully Nothing," should like this album.

4 out of 5 stars Elegant pop with a lot of soul in it.......2006-07-24

I found about Andy Chase thanks to myspace. I had no idea of his previous bands and his work as a producer. I bought this record because I liked what I heard on Brookville's myspace.
This is some very elegant music. It's got a seventies feel to it that traps you from the very first track. If you like smooth, classy pop, you should have a listen and then buy this record.

      5 out of 5 stars A candlelight set!.......2006-06-04

Alex Bugnon exhibits a high level of creativity and playfulness throughout this work, plenty of suggestive and smooth pieces, but signed with a very personal style. 107 in the shade, for instance, initiates with an exotic melody played in accordion. His French roots are shown in the first two tracks. Elegance and brightness would be the most appropriate terms to describe this notorious CD.

So if you additionally consider there is not minor track, the recommendation is almost an invitation to acquire this interesting album plenty of joyful inspiration and creative rapture.

This is really my first incursion around this young talent, but keeping in mind the rest of good positive reviews, we are in front of another brilliant finding.

2 out of 5 stars Hot in the Shade = Luke Warm at Best.......2007-06-05

This is one of Kiss's worst albums. The only reason it sold at all and the tour did so well was because of "Forever". There are 4 good songs and 11 pieces of crap. Period. "Rise to It" rocks like classic Kiss; "Hide Your Heart" is classic 80's Kiss, "Forever" is undeniably a great ballad and was a smash hit at radio; and "Little Caesar" is a rockin offering from Eric Carr. The rest of the songs stink. Gene's "Betrayed" is maybe okay. Gene does not have one other good tune on here and his songwriting is awful. "Boomerang" and "Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell" are arguably two of his worst songs ever! Just total snorefests of songs. And how about Paul imitating Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar on Me" with "Read My Body". Listen to it...it's almost identical. Or Paul trying to be Bon Jovi with "King of Hearts". I love Kiss, and I listened to this when it came out, but these songs don't stand the test of time at all. Did anyone at a concert ever yell, "Play 'Prisoner of Love'!!" I think not. These are almost all forgettable. They could have released those 4 songs in an EP. Looking back on it, one can see that with so many styles on here, Kiss was really lost at this point, They couldn't rock as hard as Metallica, they couldn't do classic Kiss in make-up without Ace and Peter, and they were not as pretty-boy good looking for the little chippies as Poison, Def Leppard, or Bon Jovi who wrote catchy 80's tunes. Yet, Kiss tried to fit in at this point as best they could.

2 out of 5 stars Kiss' "Hot in the Shade".......2007-01-23

The year was 1989, and there were high expectations that Kiss would be releasing a heavier album than 1987's "Crazy Nights," arguably the band's worst album to date. With "Hot in the Shade," Kiss delivered a mix of so-so new songs that seemed more like "Crazy Nights" outtakes. "Hot in the Shade" also has the distinction of being the first Kiss album not to have the Kiss logo prominently displayed on the front cover. Instead, it's repeated in the little circular postage stamp in the right-hand section.

Things fall apart immediately with "Rise To It" slide guitar intro (think Cinderella's "Fallin' Apart at the Seams"). Next is a Gene throwaway,"Betrayed" that goes absolutely nowhere. "Hide Your Heart" is interesting because Ace Frehley released his veriosn the very same year on his "Trouble Walkin'" CD. And between the two, I find I prefer Ace's version. Most fans are familiar with "Forever," the tune co-written by Michael Bolton. It became one of Kiss' highest charting singles, and got them quite a bit of airplay. Taken outside the context of this album, it was no better or worse than any of the other ballads being released as the music scene edged into the 1990's.

After a few listens, I couldn't help but notice how many riffs or ideas were lifted from other bands. The biggest offender is the sad "Pour Some Sugar On Me" rip-off, "Read My Body." It may be the worst song Kiss ever recorded. From its Casio keyboard inspired drum intro, to Paul Stanley's attempt at copying Joe Elliot, it's a disaster. "Prisoner Of Love"? "Love's A Slap In The Face" "Silver Spoon"? "King of Hearts"? All pretty darn bland and unlistenable. The only song I find even remotely enjoyable is "You Love Me To Hate You." It actually has a great chorus that builds and shows the slight spark of creativity. Also interesting to note is that Eric Singer, Kevin Valentine, and a drum machine (most noticable on "The Street Giveth...") were used on several songs instead of Eric Carr.

And then there's "Cadillac Dreams." I'm not sure if Gene was lampooning himself when he sings, "Money, money, that what I want..." but it sadly has become his calling card over the years.
