Description

It'd been far too long since Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. reared their collective menacing heads around the scene. After disappearing for several years, the clan regrouped with a monster of a record in West Koasta Nostra. It's a welcome return for the group, whose production skills and lyrical delivery are as fierce as ever. Aside from having an average of three guests per track, Mack 10, Kurupt, and Knoc-Turn'al all make strong appearances that rival deliveries on their own respective albums, but it's Cypress Hill's B Real and Eminem's appearance on "911" that unquestionably makes the track the crown jewel of West Koasta Nostra. DVD includes the Tribal Scars trailer.

5 out of 5 stars West Koasta Tizzight!.......2005-03-23

Tha Tribe's new cd is really tizight. For those that are tru rap fans and tru West Coast riders, they will feel this album. With a number of artists like Kurupt, B-Real/Cypress Hill, Knocturnal, WC, Eminem and otherz. This album provides bangin beats by BattleCat. The BYT definitely did a great job at this album. This ain't only for Samoans because only the realest can feel their pain and lyrics.

Boo Yaa Tribe is some of the best west coast music in awhile, but is not really that good. Best track on the album hands down is Heated, featuring Short Khop (OH MY GOD!!!) he kills that song, but still NOT RECOMMENDED.

3 out of 5 stars Boo-Ya Tribe aims to revive the West Koast on new LP!.......2004-02-23

The Boo-Ya Tribe are certainly a force to be recokned with. Never mind that the massive Blood-affiliated Samoans rate right up there on the list of people that you never want to catch on a bad day, the influence of their music alone is enough to snatch the attention of your casual rap fan. With perhaps their biggest attempt at super-stardom, they certainly pull in an all-star cast which includes Mack 10, W.C., B-Real of Cypress Hill, Kurupt, and even a little-known rapper by the name of Eminem. With a guest list like this, it's no wonder why the streets have been talking about this release.

"West Koasta Nostra" is the Tribe's attempt to show that the left coast is not to be slept on when it comes to the rap game. This album certainly has its share of bangers courtesy of producer Battlecat who laced all the beats on the LP aside from "911" which was produced by Eminem. Battlecat's phenominal production ability keeps "Nostra" afloat though the twelve-track disc is so drowned in high-profile guest appearances that it should be billed as a compilation rather than a group album. Ganxta Ridd seems to be the only member who shows up on every track and most of the time, he is lyrically outshined by his guest counterpart. The Tribe's only group cut is the appropriately-titled "Legends" where they speak on their influence on the rap game.

The lead-off single for "West Koasta Nostra", a bumpin' track called "Bang On" featuring Mack 10 is a good way to start the album but Mack's WSC partner, Dub-C steals the show with "N Full Motion", the highlight of the album. "911" is a bit average considering that it features verses from both Eminem and B-Real but it's still a hell of a track. Boo-Ya's alliance with Death Row is evident with appearances from Kurupt, Crooked I, Eastwood, and Gail Gotti on three of the album's tracks. Only one of the three ("Zodiak Kreep" featuring Gail) seems to live up to its potentiol.

"West Koasta Nostra" is a nice album but it suffers from both being too short and being far too dependent on its major guest spots. The fact that group producer, Monster O did no producing on the LP does nothing to highlight their influence despite their better efforts to showcase it through out both the album and the bonus DVD included with it. When all is said and done, this is an amazing album but it doesn't come close to "Album Of The Year" material, if you ask me.
