Eerie and dark music for the soul.......2007-03-08

Midnight Syndicate's 13th HOUR is the perfect album to listen to while you write; its dark mood and somber atmosphere are inspiring to me when I write a horror tale. It also serves as great background music to your Halloween party or gothic evening among friends.

This was the first album I got from them and I want all the others too because I'm hooked now. They recently re-released their early works under the title OUT OF THE DARKNESS. Also, check out VAMPYRE and GATES OF DELIRIUM.

Whether you're the Goth type or a casual fan wanting some cool music to set the ambiance at a party, 13th HOUR is an awesome symphonic horror album.

We had this playing in all the rooms of our house during our Halloween party last year, all the tracks going in different order in a continuous loop. This set quite a mood! Everyone commented on the music and how great it was. Just the right amount and use of sound effects. So many Halloween type c.d.'s go too far and become just corny and that wrecks the mood you're trying to create in the first place. After the party, when everyone left but for my cousins and us, we just had this playing in the library and had a ball scaring the wits out of each other with our own "personal" ghost stories. We're not into the whole goth culture thing, but we can appreciate what M.S. is doing. To listen to this at only Halloween is a mistake, you're short changing yourself. Put this on curled up with you're favorite suspense, thriller or horror book for an added dimension to the experience.

This disc really delivers! Not only is it great background for gaming sessions but the music definitely stands on it's own as cool listening/driving music. Dynamic pieces, a lot of instrumental variety, and just enough sound effects to enhance the mood.

As far as it's application to a game situation - I have to say this is the best fantasy RPG soundtrack I've ever heard (that seems to be the general consensus from the other DMs I've talked to on the convention circuit). The other soundtrack attempts before this one really pale in comparison in my opinion.

When I have the time, I like to go through all of my soundtracks and piece together a custom soundtracks for my games. This disc mixed with some Conan and any of the LOTR scores makes for a powerful combo.

More than often I don't have the time to devote to that. I'm pleased to say that in every session where I've JUST played this disc in the background, it's worked very well. A bit on the dark side but for a dungeon crawl I can think of no better music.

The coolest Gaming and Riding.......2005-01-21

I went to Amazon looking for more afordable book than the ones I had just bougth at Hastings and suddenly, I met a CD by the name of Dungeons and Dragons. I was not a Midnight Syndicate fan before mind you, but after hearing this CD in converted and now I am looking forward to gettineg other CDs by them. The tracks in it are great 2/3 of them are not gloomy or rather mysterious. But this makes sence when you are "descending into the depths" or looking in a secret chamber. I love the"Prelude" because it sets the mood of a Fantasy like wolrd, the harp is really cool too. I loved "Craft of the Wizard" and the one also after that. It is like a march and then there is some catapults hurling stones. I also like the sword sound effects. They sound metally but hey most swords are thin (except Claymores):> But the Best song of them all would have to be "City of Sails" It is great, It sounds like Final Fantasy VIII a little but its great. The great thing about this music is that you can picture the action thats going on. I pictured myself riding a horse to victory. It is also great listening to it while in the car, especially in the morning because it wakes you up and puts you in a "triumphant" mood. Also I wrote some poetry while listening to "Ruins of Bone Hill" and when i read it aloud with the music it gave it a great effect.

So all in all This is One of the few great buys that i have loved right off the bat.
I hope you enjoy it as well.

A GameMaster's Review.......2004-10-12

I agree in great part with the review by Ryan Marshall. I'll note that I have not listened to any other Midnight Syndicate works before this one, but I am making an effort to be objective.
My favorite tracks are the two `bonus' tracks, Ruins of Bone Hill and City of Sails.

The quality of this music (if you don't mind that it's synthesized and can appreciate this sort of thing) is a 4/5, which is a fairly high rating from me.

But as far as this music can be applied to roleplaying is a 2/5 at best...

Here's the problems:

1) The music all seems to have the dark/eerie flavor that seems to be the staple of Midnight Syndicate. This severely limits the themes, moods, and instrument sets that were used. The only exception is City of Sails. While this does not detract from the quality of the music itself, it would still be nice to have more variety in a collection that is supposedly `official roleplaying music'.

2) I rarely found that the intended setting for each track actually suited the music, but the sound effects that were included made it unusable for anything else.
For example, Beasts of the Borderland seemed to me to be a great track for an army on the march, until I started hearing strange `beast' noises that seemed out of place.

3) Speaking of out of place sound effects, I found that many of the sound effects were ambiguous, unfulfilling, or outright mood-spoiling.
For example, in both Skirmish and Final Confrontation, you hear the `clash of swords' at certain times. However, these `swords' sound like pieces of tin slapping against one another with minimal force rather than actual swords. Who uses tin swords? Besides, not all `skirmishes' in roleplaying actually involve swords...

Side Note: Many portions of the melodies were familiar and some outright recognizable as being nearly identical to some of those used in older console RPGs. Perhaps it was from such games that they drew their inspiration. It would have to be a very big coincidence otherwise.

If you are a roleplayer and/or enjoy background music and aren't penny pinching or if you are a Midnight Syndicate fan, then you will probably want to buy this anyway. But I would not recommend this collection to anyone else.

I would give this product a 4 1/2 if I could. I will be honest, Its not the most spectacular album in the world, but it does fit its purpose exactly. From the core of your game until its over...You will enjoy this product completely! Th attitude and ambience it creates for RPG gamers (particularly D&D) just what the Master ordered. It fits extremely well into any game, as well as car or relaxation music. Overall: great product!

Only a gamer can make a class act sound track........2004-08-17

Midnight syndicate does it again with their sound track for the D&D game. The music is thoughful, playful, and powerful. Perfect for any campaign or a drive in the car.
Once again it is a great feeling seeing another home grown product from the Midnight Syndicate. After all they started as gamers and have not forgotten their roots.

Deliciously Dark Music.......2007-05-18

OUT OF THE DARKNESS is a collection of tracks from three early Midnight Syndicate albums of mid to late 1990s. For those unfamiliar with the band, it is composed of Edward Douglas and Gavin Goszka. Their music is a horror lover's dream; its eeriness and atmospherically creepy notes will please even the most demanding Halloween music or Gothic symphony aficionados.

Back to OUT OF THE DARKNESS. The songs (they're really instrumentals, save for one) have been re-mastered and re-recorded for this release, making them sound even better than they must have sounded originally now that they've grown musically. Some of the standout tracks include "Born of the Night" (my personal favorite), "Eye of the Storm" (the piano in these songs is haunting), "Legions of the Night", "Eclipse", and "Darkfolk".

All in all, this album has a total of 24 songs and also includes some previously unreleased tracks as well as two songs from Edward's short horror film, The Dead Matter (which will become a feature-length horror film in 2008).

This one's a winner. Everything these guys put out is simply awesome. I'm a horror writer and I always seek out good atmospheric music, such as horror film scores, when I write; Midnight Syndicate have become regulars in my player. If you don't have any of their albums yet, this is a good place to start. Then get THE 13TH HOUR, their masterpiece, in my opinion. Highly recommended!

Great way to start your Midnight Syndicate collection!.......2007-01-19

Since I don't own any of this band's CD, I figured this one would be a great choice to become aquainted with them since it has songs from their other CDs.

If this CD is any indication of what their other music sounds like, I'M IN! I wish I'd heard of them sooner. My only problem now is trying to decide whcih CD of theirs to buy next.

I really enjoy this CD. I have been a fan of Midnight Syndicate for several years, and I look forward to each release. When I heard this CD was going to be a retrospective, I must admit I was a little disappointed as I was hoping for new material. I bought the CD anyway and it has exceeded my expectations.

First of all, there is new material! There are four tracks that were previously unreleased, so that satisfied my need for something I hadn't heard before. Also, there are tracks from Midnight Syndicate's first release, which was self-titled and which I hadn't heard before - so that was new to me, too!

Second, I very much enjoy listening to how the tracks have changed from when they were first released on "Born of the Night" and "Realm of Shadows". They seem to have a bit more depth - to be more finely tuned than they were before, but not changed so much that they're too different to enjoy if you liked them the first time around.

I grew up with Halloween albums filled with screeching cats, laughing witches, rattling chains and howling wind. Those were great, but if you're hosting a haunted house or are looking to set a darker mood, this is the best Halloween music out there.

Sophisticated, varied and truly dark, Midnight Syndicate has the corner on the market as far as I'm concerned. I've had people ask me what music was playing and how where they could find it. If you're a Halloween afficianado or are simply looking for a gothic sound, I can't recommend Midnight Syndicate highly enough.

fair, but not original........2007-01-08

There are some nice things to say about this album. It was actually the 1st "gothic" CD I ever bought at hot topic and listened to it right away.

Now that I have several other pieces by different artists, I am noticing that there is something missing from this. A certain pizazz.... I like it, but don't listen to it much anymore.

The first time I heard this album, I wasn't blown away. It was good and all, but I liked it the least of all of the previous Midnight Syndicate albums. Not too long ago, I pulled it out again and listened to it again. It's funny how your opinion of something can change over time. This time, I WAS blown away. I thought to myself "How could I have only thought 'yeah, it's pretty good' back then?" This CD was amazing!

If you weren't overly impressed the first tme you heard this CD, throw it back in and give it another try. It might just sound a little different to your ears this time around.

I just got done listening to this album. It's the first of its kind for me. I was completely blown away. Forget the fact that vampires don't exist (right?) and just fantasize that they do and give this album a listen. If this doesn't get you somewhere within your soul, I swear you're dead (no pun intended).

Wonderful earlier works.......2007-07-11

This is by far one of my favorite albums from the group. I would highly recommend this album as one to have someone listen to start any sort of interest with the group.

Realm of mediocrity.......2007-04-29

I must say that in investigating the world of Midnight Syndicate over the past year I found that this CD seems to be the most-talked about, highly-praised and least available of their releases. Now, that I have it in my possession (the 5th Midnight Syndicate CD I have bought in 10 months) I find it to be kind of bland compared to Gates Of Delirium and The 13th Hour (although it's a step up from Born Of The Night which walks the fence between creepy and corny). While the mood and sound effects on Realm Of Shadows are nice (the crows on the CD made me think I had one trying to build a nest on my balcony), there are really no tracks that stand out. They all just kind of run together. I'm not saying it's awful. Like most things in life, it just doesn't live up to the hype.

This was officially my first Midnight Syndicate CD....Life hasn't been the same since..........2007-02-02

You know, little did I know as I walked by this particular booth at a convention what I was listening to was going to affect me in the profound way that it did. A CD called Vampyre was playing and I stopped dead in my tracks and listened. It was simply beautiful. I asked the man at the booth if he had anything that might be appropriate for a graveyard? He recommended this CD. I also bought what was playing and didn't think twice about it. *This*, REalm of Shadows, was the first official CD that I listened to by this band known as Midnight Syndicate. I was completely transfixed by the music. I never sat down until several tracks later. I was officially crying my heart out by the second track saying "oh my God..this is so beautiful.." over and over.
That night, I didn't want to sleep. I wanted to keep listening to my new CDs as many times possible. I had never heard anything like this in my life. Before exhaustion took over I told myself I must not let the man selling these wonderful CDs get away without selling me the other two he had available! All I knew was, that I was slapped by so much inspiration that it literally hurt. Something long lost and dead inside me was reborn the night before. I saw so many images that needed to be created as a result of listening to this music. Midnight Syndicate became my instant muse. Soundtrack for the Imagination Indeed!
This review has little to say about particular tracks, but rather the over all emotion of experiencing this band's music for the first time in my own home. The peace I felt(despite the dark nature of the music). The mental images of my own yard haunt that hit me randomly in an almost *Field of Dreams* way so entangled that I had to built it to put the pieces together. Not to mention the images that came to me to simply put to canvas. I hadn't had ANY thing like this in my life that moved me to be more creative in my own life. I am thankful for this band and I will forever be dedicated to it. Thank you Ed and Gavin....

Realm of Goth.......2006-11-29

"Realm of Shadows" (2000) is Midnight Syndicate's second dose of "haunting orchestrations and sinister sound effects (creating) a dark, gothic soundscape." Having purchased all of their CDs (twice - for work and personal use) and using their music (with their permission, of course) as soundtracks for our local Halloween haunted attractions, I can honestly say that I will always be anticipating their next release.

As with "Born of the Night" (see my review), the production quality of this CD was outstanding. The music is stirring and the sound effects are realistic. The raven calls in track #9 "Ravens Hollow," the synthesized strings in track #12 "Spectral Mist," and the creaking timbers in track #20 "Harbored Souls" are particularly noteworthy. I actually prefer Syndicate's limited use of vocal effects, which normally come off as "cheesy" attempts to sound creepy. And once again, the bell tones in track #13 "Soliloquy" and track #21 "Eclipse" should have been digitally sampled instead of using tubular bells.

There are 21 selections totaling a little more than 52 minutes of music. Most of the tracks would have benefited from lengthening and building upon the base music and effects- they left me wanting more. The best tracks on this CD are #9 "Raven's Hollow," #10 "Beyond the Gates," #15 "Serpent's Lair," #19 "Witching Hour," and #20 "Harbored Souls."

As with their previous CD, this music begs to be played on a high-quality sound system, preferably one with some kick-butt subwoofers and enough power to handle this CD's wide dynamic range. Otherwise, listen with care on less-capable systems before you crank up the volume.

A beautifully crafted piece, both chilling and inspiring.......2005-04-20

Enter the realm where shadows lurk and nightmares reign. Beware of long passed souls unsettling before your eyes as you listen to the dark and eerie tale of Raven's Hallow.

A must have for those who want a chill with a little story in the mix.

i read all these reviews on here and i thought it was gone be a good cd so i downloaded it and it was nuthin but garbage. the only somewhat good songs is when darkness falls and situations. the rest are all weaker than dead people tryin to lift weights...

Fine Detroit hip-hop.......2006-02-06

I've heard of King Gordy for a long time now, but never listened to any of his music until recently when I got my hands on "The Entity" and I must admit, I was missing out. This is Detroit hip-hop at it's finest, think lyrical ability of D-12 with the subject matter of old school Esham. This kind of music is what put Detroit on the map as a rap capital. If you want to hear some good old violent, sick and twisted rap, then King Gordy is definetly for you.

The Entity - Skit. An introduction.
Nightmares - The first single shows how dark, violent, and overall talented Gordy is. Fans of Biggie will recognize the first few lines of verse 2. (Armed and dangerous, AKs turn your brains to mosh/Mix my weed with angel dust, feds label us notorious...) Personally, I believe the best verse on this track didn't make the album. The video version features a fourth verse which is insane. 9.5/10
The Pain - On the second single Gordy comes with nonstop punches and similees. Gordy comes with lines that would be great in a battle, yet he proclaims (I ain't no battle rapper/but I will gladly slap ya). With a barrage of insults and threats, Gordy seems to really be establishing himself as a beast. 8.5/10
Fight - Again, Gordy comes violent (duh). This time he tells stories of him getting into fights. It begins with Gordy talking to another man and then it gets physical. The chorus shows you what to expect (Hit 'em/Kick 'em/Punch 'em/Stomp 'em). Throughout the first verse Gordy is describing the ass whooping he is giving to this one man while he is battling him. In the second verse Gordy finds out how a group is planning on jumping his brother. He gets 10 men to come with him and they get there just in time to whoop everyone's ass once again. In the final verse one of them runs away to grab his gun. Gordy is already strapped and so he starts shooting. The song may seem weak, but the detail Gordy goes in makes this a dope track. 8.5/10
Situations (f/ Obie Trice) - Obie Trice does not rap on this track. Instead he talks and gives Gordy a subject (situation) and Gordy raps about it. It ranges from who he is to weed to murder, etc. Gordy shows he can rap about other things than just violence on this track. 9/10
When Darkness Falls - This track is different from everything else you've heard on this album. This song is much more deep. It starts off with a series of dark and/or sad events. The song is ended with Gordy talking about disturbed things (Practices using voodoo, oujia boards, he prays with these cults...). 9/10
Playground (f/ Fatt Father) - Skit, sort of leads into the next song.
Time to Die (f/ Bizarre) - You thought When Darkness Falls was dark and disturbed? This blows it out of the water. Murder, suicide, drugs, and more! I can't even properly describe it. Bizarre even comes with a decent verse until he starts punching his grandma and having sex with his mom. 8.5/10
Fat-Tastic 4 (f/ Fat Killahz) - FK take on the names of the Fantastic Four. Fatt Father (the invisible man) steals food when people can't see him and he steals from all the rich folk and give to the poor. He says he is "untouchable". Shim-E Bango (Mr. Fantastic) also steals food, but he just keeps his distance. Bango has the talent to tap ass from a block away. Marvwon (The Human Torch) can burn anyone in the blink of an eye. King Gordy (The Thing) is just crazy! He moshpits with white people and takes other people's women despite being fat and funny looking. 8/10
Pass Me a Lighter - Weakest track on the album... Not much to say, just Gordy talking about how he's not a normal human being... 6/10
No Lights - Most personal track on the album. Gordy raps about his life from age 10 to 18. He tells about how his mom wouldn't/couldn't pay the rent, his brother sold drugs, his sister was a hoodrat, his uncle stole from his brother, etc. 9.5/10
We Violent - Back to what you remember at the start of the album. It's a tight track, but once again, there's not much I can say except it's incredibly violent... 8.5/10
The Mask - Lyrically, it's a good track. I just never really liked it... I like a more sad, less dark When Darkness Falls. A series of sad events... "The Mask" refers to using drugs to hide your sadness. 8/10
Hello Gordy - Skit. Leads into the next track.
Stress (f/ Sal from P.H.E.) - Normally I don't like rock, but this is a tight track... Gordy raps through most of the song while Sal is on the hook and one verse rocking... Stress is about stressful events and getting drunk (if you couldn't figure that out for yourself). 8.5/10
Nobody Hates Nothin' - This song is about how Gordy feels everyone hates him. Everybody ignores him. Nobody will buy his CDs or drugs. Gordy hates everything while he is the most hated. 8.5/10

Overall - One of the best debut albums in recent years... King Gordy is demented, violent, and insane. The Entity contains most of his best work, but some tracks not on the album are better than some that are. If I could, I would take out Bizarre's verse (which would bring Time To Die's rating up)... 8/10

i first saw king gordy when i went to the d12 world concert in chicago. he was there with his crew da fat killahz and they rocked the house wild, it was crazy fun. then last christmas my freind picked up his album and burned it 4 me and i really like it. its a really good album gordy is a great lyricist and has really good flowz. he combines alot of his music wit kurt cobain style stuff, which 4 him turns out good. the whole album is average to good with the best trax being: 3, 6, 9 (featuring the fat killahz) and 10,

make sure u pick up his groups album: "guess whos coming to dinner?"

I picked up this album up a couple of months ago and I have to give them and their production crew props. There's a great mix of hip-hop, R&B, and club tracks to keep anyone satisfied. Would be great to hear these guys on the radio - look out 112!!!

Entity album Locked Doors.......2006-05-29

I recently bought this album and was really pleased with the variety of R&B mixed with some hip hop. I am not that big on hip hop but this album is great to listen to or hit the dance floor to. Independent albums are usually not this good but the Locked Doors album is something everyone who loves R&B needs to support. The Indy labels are the future of the music business and I highly recommend getting this album. Great job ENTITY way to go.

I'm surprised this cd has been reviewed as well as it has... "Alive" is just so generic and the whole album follows suit. Anyone looking for cutting edge dance music ought to look elsewhere.. and oh yeah... the autotuned/vocoded vocals are terrible but its probably better than the natural sound of Kevin's voice.

'Entity' is No 'Box of Chocolates'.......2003-11-06

Kevin Aviance's Second major album release is a much more mature, and produced album. His first album, Box of Chocolates, is a favorite of mine, for its dark, tribal and campy feel.

Entity, doesn't quite follow this formula, with a much more standardized song structure. Its has a much more pop influenced sound, fused with house beats, and synth lines. Something to appeal to the "pop/dance" market. This is no doubt the influence of producer Tony Moran, who produced most of the album. My one complaint with this album (and much of dance music these days) is the blatant over use of auto-tune (think cher - believe) on his vocals. The effect works for some songs, but almost every song has this, which I think really makes the songs sound redundant, and similar.

That being said, there are some really great tracks on this album. "alive" which was the first single did very well, and has a great message, and a great upbeat dance beat. "freak it" has a great disco-ish funky vibe, which is fun. And "give it up" which is the second single is already getting a lot of airplay on NYC radio stations. One of the strongest tracks on the album I think is "fire" a great down tempo/ballad type song, with amazing vocals from Kevin, and a deep slow vibe.

If your a fan of Mr. Aviance, this is definitely an album to pick up, although, if your looking for a Box of Chocolates Part 2, you probably wont get into this album all that much.

Live Out Loud.......2003-11-02

Kevin Aviance's new album shows a fair amount of growth from his previous collection, "Box of Chocolates." While Box of Chocolates was very nice for its moody, Grace Jones influenced rhythms; Aviance didn't try too much variation with his vocals except on "Dance For Love." On this album, it seems that Kevin has been working a lot on his voice, as there's a lot more singing, less chanting, and more melody. In addition to his Billboard Hit "Alive," there are some songs I really liked including "You've Got The Groove," "Freak It" and "Fire."

If you don't already know "Alive," it's fun, happy and upbeat. Kevin Aviance lives in New York, and this was something the city really needed to cheer everyone up after September 11th.

"You've Got The Groove" reminds me a little of a record from Cajual Records by Dajae called "You've Got Me Up." However, Kevin's song is lighter and more melodic. This sounds like a good song to "walk" to, so, just like tracks by Robbie Tronco, this might make a nice vogueing record. (Actually, it doesn't sound much like a Tronco track at all as it's too light/melodic. Part of it sounds like something from DJ Pierre like "What is House Muzik?" or "Plastic.") I think it would make a great single, especially if they brought out a strong, smacking drum line.

The beginning of "Give It Up" just bowls you over with energy. It settles into something a bit mellower that reminds me a bit of the Murk record "Fired Up" by Funky Green Dogs. Kevin uses his deep voice a bit on this, so he did give this track his own signature. The lyrics are fun and racy.

Merrily skipping right over track 5, the "interlube chant," we get to the awesome "Freak It." The mixing of the background music and Kevin's vocals is really quite good. While it might be a little down tempo for a club, I still think this song would be fun to mix with something like Steve Miller's "Abracadabra", The Dazz Band's "Let It Whip" or The Mary Jane Girls' "In My House." And this is another song that would go over big with Grace Jones fans.

"The Power" seems to be a throwback to what I used to call "Gospel House" or "Church House" which I guess is best described as a type of lighter house music with religious inflections. A good example of this genre was the song "I Know He Will" by Revival, although actually I think "The Power" is a little better. Still, I don't think this one of the stronger tracks of the album, as the music is a bit too repetitive.

"Seattle" is slow and poetic. It seems out of place on an album that is mostly dance music, but it's nice to have something bluesy and personal. To me, it shows that this artist is willing to risk an experiment and expand musically.

"Twirl" is very ironic for someone who's been such a big presence in the club world. The music comes across as a bit uninspired and throwaway, but actually this song is very mature because it seems to be about the realization that the scene has a sad, cynical and numbing side to it. It's a very timely song as it comes out as the same time as the dark club film "Party Monster." Some of the lyrics make me curious if this song is a bit of a tribute to the late disco musician, Sylvester.

"Fire" is perfect end-of-the-night music. It's soothing and trancy so it's terrific to come down to after a long night of dancing, but still great to move to if you have a little energy left. This is another track that would make a great single. This song reminds me a little bit of "Days Go By" by Dirty Vegas, but I really think "Fire" is way better. It also reminds me of some of the best elements of Whitney Houston's "Love Will Save The Day." Kevin's vocals are particularly impressive on this one.

"Ready Set Go" is more of a showpiece for Tony Moran (the producer) than Kevin. It features some canned arena noise so it reminds me a bit of the rave tracks from the early 90's. Then there's a nice bonus track -- a new remix of "Alive." With the number of good songs on this album, I'd say it's definitely one to add to your collection. I hope to see more singles off of this release.
