The Best Of Gilbert And Sullivan.......2004-03-15

At the end of the 19th century (1870's, 80's and 90's) the compatible duo of librettist and composer Gilbert and Sullivan popularized the pre-Broadway entertainment of Savoy opera. These were light operas or operettas whose content was satire and comedy, full of bouncy melodies and beautiful singing, highly entertaining theatrical works staged at London's Savoy theatre. Gilbert and Sullivan did not always get along and in fact there was a time when they ended their professional relationship because personal conflicts surfaced. But they managed to create the world's most beloved light operas, over 40 of them. Their most famous are what I call the Big Three- The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance and The Mikado. Other works include their first hit Trial By Jury, The Yeomen Of The Guard, Princess Ida, The Gondoliers, Patience and several others. A standard signature of Gilbert and Sullivan was in the colorful cast- a comic actor with a special kind of baritone voice, a canary-like and sweet-voiced coloratura or lyric diva, a mezzo soprano with strong chest register and a lyric tenor as the romantic hero. On this album, English conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, a popular figure in the classical music scene and opera, guides the Chorus and Orchestra Of the Welsh National Opera in generally well-delivered performances of excerpts from the operas The Mikado, The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance, Yeomen Of The Guard and Trial By Jury. Although I feel that the recordings made by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, with Isodore Godfrey conducting and starring the best cast of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire- the singers of the 60's and 70's- tenor Phillip Potter, soprano Valerie Masterson, baritone John Reed, Donald Adams and mezzo soprano Christine Palmer. Their version of the Pirates Of Penzance and the Mikado far outshine the Welsh National Opera in technical mastery and vibrant tone color.

But these are fine excerpts. Especially appealing is the famous and cheerful "Three Little Maids From School Are We", a trio that imitates Japanese style melody. Most of the Mikado does this, for it was inspired by Japanisme or the new fashion in Victorian England- everything Japanese, from prints to paintings to poetry. Gilbert and Sullivan simply "Japanized" their English operettas. The Finale "For He's Gone To Marry Yum Yum" is an ebullient and pleasant finale. Not featured here is the domineering and powerful Katisha, a figure who stands out in the Mikado.

The H.M.S. Pinafore is Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular work. The sea chanty "We Sail The Ocean Blue" opens the opera with appropriate atmosphere and it seems to fit perfectly with the other scene in which the Captain greets his crew and they sing his praises "My Gallant Crew..I am the Captain Of The Pinafore". A beautiful melody that seems to come out of a romantic Offenbach tune is "I"m Called Little Buttercup". The finale, not featured here, is also very engaging "For He Is An Englishman" which can almost resemble a British national anthem. The Yeomen Of The Guard was Gilbert and Sullivan's "serious opera" eventhough it remains very Savoyard. The plot deals with Tudor England and takes place at the London Tower. "I have a song to sing" makes use of what can be taken for an English ballad of the Renaissance. Trial By Jury, about the eccentric and hilarious activity of a court trial, has a sextet that although different in composition, has the sextet "Che Mi Frena" from Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor in mind. All in all, an excellent recording sure to delight young and old.

--Gilbert & Sullivan--
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a match made in heaven, yet on earth their pairing seems even with hindsight a most unlikely coupling. Both were destined for other things, Gilbert in fact for decidedly non-musical careers. Introduced by a mutual friend, Fred Clay, the fledgling lyricist Gilbert met the military-band-leader's son Sullivan and together continued to conspire to inspire the delights of audiences from high Victorian times down to the present, as their work in musical theatre comedy continues to provide merriment throughout the English-speaking world and beyond.

--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeoman of the Guard, and Trial by Jury. The arrangements and orchestrations are delightfully energetic and clear; the characterisation and vocal qualities of the leads are perfect for their roles. The haughty if misplaced Lord of the Admiralty has the perfect combination of insecurity and pompous officiousness. The Plaintiff and the Defendant in the Trial are perfectly cast. This is a collection of highlights - at least three but no more than seven songs each, but this gives a good flavour of the music. The recordings on this collection come from complete performances by Mackerras and the WNO.

--Sir Charles Mackerras--
Mackerras is one of the geniuses of the twentieth century musical scene. Having a conducting career that includes the Hamburg Opera, the English National Opera (formerly Sadlers Wells Opera), and the Welsh National Opera (the performers for this piece), he has also conducted major orchestras on the continent of Europe and in the United States. The holder of many major awards and honourary doctorates, he has devoted much time and energy to the preservation and performance of eighteenth and nineteenth century music, as well the restoration of historical musical venues, such as the Estates Theatre in Prague, scene of the original production of Don Giovanni (Mackerras conducted the opera there to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Mozart).

--Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus--
The seeds of the WNO were planted in Cardiff during World War II by music lovers; the first performances occurred a year after the war's end, with Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci on the bill, with Faust the next night. Popular appeal was so great that the WNO was established, later adding choruses in both Cardiff and Swansea. The professional chorus was established in 1973, with a strength that matches the orchestra. They continue an ambitious performance schedule for recording and live events; Mackerras remains the Conductor Emeritus, as the WNO continues under the direction of Carlo Rizzi. The list of awards the WNO has won over the years is staggering - they are a world class institution by any measure.

--Other performers--
Notable singers such as Richard Stuart, Rebecca Evans, Felicity Palmer, John Mark Ainsley and Anne Howells lead the chorus with stunning vocals and clever characterisations of the parts they play. Many (such as Stuart and Evans) play the leading roles across several of the pieces of the disc.

--Liner Notes--
The liner notes give a good introduction and biographical information about Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as synopses of the five pieces presented here. It does not, unfortunately, include any information about Mackerras, the WNO Orchestra and Chorus, or the other special performers. It also does not include the lyrics to the songs. Were the quality of the CD not so great, this might cost it a star in rating.

--Overall Impressions--
I play this CD in my car, in my home and in my office frequently. It is a great sing-along work and a great comedic relief from the stresses of the day. The music is bubbly and clear; the recording quality is excellent and crisp. I recommend this to any Gilbert & Sullivan lover, any fan of musical comedy, opera and operettas, and anyone who delights in good music.

Delicious G&S samplings abound here........2003-05-06

The first thing I should be saying is "What an infectuous G&S CD." Indeed this is, with this fine sampling of the peppy and bright Mackerras series. I know I have praised its "Mercedes-Benz quality" elsewhere on these pages, but that doesn't stop me from saying that everyone is in fine voice. This generously filled CD may only focus on five operas, but at least you can savour a reasonable choice sampling of delights from each one. Of particular interest is Richard Suart's patter-baritone parts and the soaring lyric soprano of Rebecca Evans. The selection on this disc is filled with a mixture of familiar favourites and lesser-known gems such as the female choruses in Mikado and Pirates. Mackerras is a true G&S conductor, but one who always springs rhythms crisply, and adopts peppy tempo for the fast bits. The one drawback is that this selection is far too infectuous that you'll want to shell out money to buy the full 5-CD Mackerras cycle - an incredible bargain with most of the operas fitted onto one disc each. But still, this is at least a decent G&S sampling for beginners, capped with Steven Ledbetter's copious liner notes. It will leave you wanting to say "dammit I'm going to play it again."

Fine Intro to G&S.......2000-12-30

This is the perfect CD for those who may not be familiar with G&S, or for the initiated who want a smattering but don't have the mother of all CD changers. The difficulty with any G&S Greatest Hits CD is determining which pieces to leave off; while one could easily point to any number equally good bits, it would be difficult to argue about the quality of the choices included. The only problem, such as it is, is that after listening to it I am usually induced to go back and listen to the whole opera anyway. The Mackerras recordings are uniformly excellent. I have read elsewhere the criticism that they are too 'operatic' for light opera. If by this it is meant that the singers are too good, then I leave it to the discretion of the listener when the singing becomes too good to be enjoyable.

Great album. The Pixies/Pavement/Modest Mouse comparisons are deserved but a little shallow. (I love those bands, but am sick of the pigeon-holing). The lyrics are cryptic, weird, and passionate. The production is low-fi, but works well with the general aesthetic of the recording. Nice mixture of sounds--a twinkling keyboard here, a few chimes there--to balance out the garage tones. The best part of the album is the composition of the songs--great melodies and enough left-turns to keep things interesting.

I'm not sure why some reviewers say that this recording is rough around the edges; the band is incredibly tight. I think a lot of them have confused the musicianship of the band with production values. The songs could hardly be played better, or with more energy.

The highlights: Insistor, In Houston, Manitoba and Omaha aren't let down by the album's less conspicuous tracks. The rockabilly-driven Insistor blends well into the trippy Crazy Eights instrumental. The western swing of 10 Gallon Ascots plays well with the melancholy of Omaha. This is a very well constructed and inspired album. It will be compared to Murmur and Slanted and Enchanted when more people hear it.

infinitely listenable.......2007-05-29

I am amazed at how great this album is. It's simply an album you can listen to over and over and over and never tire of. The melodies are just this side of catchy yet not so catchy that hearing them for the 90th time brings nausea. Tapes 'N Tapes very much do have the spirit of Talking Heads -- experimentation where the results are fascinating yet still have songs as the result vs. experimentation that may be different but is incredibly boring and is different just for the sake of being different (I'm talking to you, TV on the Radio). To point out certain tracks would be a crime, because all of them are excellent, soaring, majestic and effortlessly beautiful. Highly highly recommended.

not a single wasted note.......2007-05-11

The Loon swings into full blast on the ironically named Just Drums with a swinging guitar riff, driving drums, and stylishly EQed anthem vocals. This energy never wanes throughout the album. All the songs are strong, and flow thoughtfully into each other. Tapes 'n Tapes never fails to bring maximum energy, and this is especially evident at their live shows.

The songs are melodic, hard-driving, and not a single note is wasted in the delicate yet aggressive balance between keys, guitar, bass, and drums. The musicianship is strong all the way around, but the drummer shines especially, with his virtuosic yet nonchalant style. The guitar and drums take turns defining and then bending around each song's rhythm.

The album weaves together indie rock, early 90s hard rock, post-ska, and a little bit of alt-country (Insistor), but this is not a band you can simply define in terms of other bands or other sounds. They build a sound that is all their own. The very last song, Jakov's Suite, is a melancholy anthem taking the album out with everything it has to offer: driving energy, intensely contrasting guitar tones, surprisingly musically mature chord changes and song structure, all culminating in the sad and soaring moan: "You don't move, you don't move, when you don't move, you don't move away!"

Tranquil beauty.......2007-01-11

Of three Dan Gibson CD's that I have, this is decidedly my favorite. The music is peaceful and soothing without being insipid. The nature sounds are effectively incorporated into the music, not too loud and not overwhelming, but appropriately balanced. I used several tracks as the soundtrack for a slide show I made of Canadian trips, and they really enhance the visual experience. I often play this CD when working because it's enjoyable without interfering.

Attention Tinnitus sufferers! .......2006-12-17

This is a lovely CD but has too much music and not enough of the enchanting sounds of the Loons. The best CDs for people suffering with tinnitus are ECHOES of NATURE. No music, just sounds of nature to drown out the noise in your brain. Look them up under "New Age" then use the SEARCH bar.

I am a 13 years old and writing this review on my parents account.

This is a spectacular, soothing CD. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys "earth sounds."

The first track starts and ends with a harmony of bird calls;and the loon, goose and other various bird calls sprinkle the rest of the beautifully composed tracks on this CD.

This CD is perfect for having on in the background while you read, because the music flows gently and does not distract you as you read. I find I read more smoothly, and quickly- yet still retaining what I read, while listening to this CD. I also draw and knit with it on.

This is definitely a CD to purchase!!

If you are a mountain/lake person like me, you will absolutely love this cd. I heard it while visiting a store in the Adirondack north country, and it literally brought me to tears. Now that I'm home, I love to listen to it. To me, it perfectly captures the mood of the place I love- truly a moving, awesome piece of work. If you're a busy person and need to get "away" from it all for a while, get this cd. You WILL relax and be brought back to what's really important in life.

I'll admit that when I first saw this album I was skeptical. After all, I had bought another "loon call" tape only to be disappointed by it. It was NOT very relaxing--the one time that I did use it to help me sleep I was disturbed by some intense music pieces.

After looking into 'Land of the Loon', and listening to a few sound pieces I decided that it would at least be worth listening to in its entirety. What an understatement! I listen to this album all of the time due to its very soothing and magically soothing effects on my stress.

What I find especially nice about this album is that I can picture myself sitting in some northern wood, breathing in all of the splendid scenery...and possibly painting too. There are several tracks where I think to myself: now that scene would be nice to paint onto canvas.

Simply said: this divine piece of music and natural sounds woven together seamlessly will inspire you artistically--to be creative and enjoy nature more. Now this album is one that I can fall asleep to--there aren't ANY clashing sounds or intense musical numbers. That makes this album a lifelong companion...and a wonderful peek into the land of the loon.

This CD is soothing. However, the music in this CD are actually taken from the CDs previously realeased. Such as The classics, The classics II, Rocky mountain suite, Algonquin suite and Great lakes suite. The same note is also useful for another album in this solitudes series - The nature of Canada. If you have already got the above CDs mentioned, think twice before you purchase this item.

I have nine solitude CDs, and this is a similar quality as Guardians of Atlantis. Don't buy this CD if you are expecting it to be a really peaceful songs as I thought when I read good reviews written below in Amazon. This CD is probably good for movie/documentary soundtrack but not for true relaxation. I recommend Solitude's

Piano Cascades (for sleeping)
Songbirds Piano (for sleeping)
Songbirds at sunrise (slightly more instrumental- perfect for morning)
or Emerald Forest (slightly more instrumental)

Voices of the Loon was written and produced by William E Barklow. This recording contains loon voicings recorded in their natural habitat. Narration of the various loon calls is provided by Robert J Lurtsema. William Barklow received his Ph.D. from Tufts University. His thesis dealt with loon vocal communication. He is currently teaching at Framingham State College in Massachusetts and continuing his research on animal communications. The late Robert J. Lurtsema was the host of "Morning Pro Musica" at WGBH Public Broadcasting in Boston, Massachusetts.

waxman is the man!.......2007-05-10

i love waxman's music. i think of his work in the same way i think of kurt weill's music. the melodies are so rich, so complex and the harmonies stir the soul. the diversity of musical genres both covered was also wide and rich.

but as much as love the gerhardt/rca recordings, i am not fond of the selection of works chosen to respresent waxman. it is good to know that there are many other cds of waxman's work out on the market to be found and appreciated.

but i do like the 'elegy for strings' from old acquaintance, the ' a place in the sun' suite and 'sunset boulevard'.

Nostalgia and then some.......2006-02-20

Many times the score makes the movie. In this case Franz Waxman Film Scores contributed well. However as a stand alone collection this really does not have a place other than a once in a while listen to remember the particular movies.

Each piece is preformed well by the National Philharmonic Orchestra. However I do not see situation for listening to this album. It does not make good driving musing or reading music, or just sitting and listening to music. This does have a place if you are collecting various composers' works.

Franz Waxman Tribute.......2005-10-12

This CD sounds splendid. It is very rich and moving. A PLACE IN THE SUN is beautiful. REBECCA is very pensive and very much what you may expect in a Hitchcock film. However, the best cut on this CD is from TARAS BULBA. What a piece of music. It is both rousing and inspirational. Outstanding!

Wonderful compilation of vintage Waxman.......2003-04-12

Charles Gerhardt was just the right conductor to revive these classic scores from the prolific film composer, Franz Waxman: His lush, melodramatic interpretations of the music do not fit every genre, but he feels right at home here with the sweeping melodies of the silver screen.

A good selection of Waxman's film music can be found here, including his most acclaimed, Sunset Boulevard. (It certainly has a sparkle that Joel McNeeley's recent rerecording seemed to lack, even if the score is not present here in its entirety.) Other highlights are the stirring themes of Prince Valiant and the eerie and sinister tones of his score for The Bride of Frankenstein. A particular favourite of mine is Rear Window, sadly absent here, though to my knowledge only one recording exists (Lalo Schifrin and the San Diego Pops, Hitchcock: Master of Mayhem): Fans can take solace in the fact that one of the Rear Window tunes appears here in its earlier form as we heard it in A Place in the Sun.

If you are a film music buff, this is definitely worth a place in your collection. Gerhardt captures the essence of Waxman perfectly.

Franz Waxman's Music is Magic.......2001-10-02

This CD is a wonderful place to start your collection of Franz Waxman film music.

Waxman's sense of melodic line and tasteful harmonies are masterful. Of particular note are his suites from Prince Valiant, and The Bride of Frankenstein (also used in the old Flash Gordon serials). Charles Gerhardt does a fine job conducting this wonderful collection of jems.

Why Haven't I Heard of This Guy Before?.......1999-06-09

I found this blues morsel on broadcast.com! Soulful vocals in a late 60's/early 70's R&B style with a Stax flavor, complimented by tasteful Buddy Guy/Albert King/BB King tinged leads & fills. Smooth, in-the-pocket rhythm guitar; fantastic horn arrangements; Green Bullet harmonica; and sublime background piano & organ. The production is first-rate without any slickness or overblown trickery - just pure blues/R&B talent on this CD. Why have I not heard this guy before???? The arrangements are classic, full without being cluttered, and Percy's vocals are up front with feeling (but not show-offy). Even the background singers sound great.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I thought ole "Givin' It Up For Your Love" needed background vocals - the way I'm used to hearing it I guess. But if you can listen to the first track without wanting to buy this album.... Mix together Luther Allison, BB King, Buddy Guy, Edwin Starr, Albert King, Ike & Tina Turner, Eddie "The Chief" Clearwater, and this is what might get - I hope Percy tours in my city soon!

Bad Boy...come out and plai-yay!.......2007-03-17

I will never truly understand Mr. Sean Combs. The man is a cunning mogul, most certainly; he's made himself one of the richest entreprenuers in American for a reason. What I lack in understanding of Mr. Combs is the amount of talented New York emcees he signs, and let's go to waste. Sure, Craig Mack was dropped by Mr. Combs for a reason, but since Craig Mack's dispell from Bad Boy over a decade ago, Diddy's done the exact same thing with so many other rappers on his label. His loyalty to his artists needs no exploring; just look at Shyne, and you'll see how much Diddy cares about his roster of talent beyond their record deal. What doesn't make sense to me is the amount of potential New York renassiance men Diddy signs, only to have them release one album, then sit on their contracts until they expire. Black Rob was almost a casualty of this, but he somehow managed to release an album two years ago, on Bad Boy records no less. G. Dep and Loon weren't quite as lucky though.

G. Dep has long been one of my favorite underrated New York emcees. I first heard him on the Premo track, Head Over Wheels, and from that moment on, I was a fan. His debut album, and thus far only solo album, Child of the Ghetto, was arguably the best non-B.I.G. album to be released on Bad Boy Records, and continues to be such to this day. Loon, on the other hand, is someone I never really paid much attention to; I heard him making guest appearances on Puffy songs, but never really thought much of him. On this release, I find out that Loon, too, has a unique flow, and can ride almost any beat.

The production on this album is surprisingly tight. It sounds like it has a major-label budget, which tends to help independent releases have a higher sound quality. Whatever budget these two had to work with over the course of this album, they put their money together, and delivered a dope album musically. Behind the microphone? G. Dep and Loon, as I said, are both above-average emcees, with Dep riding the lines of excellent and Loon being pretty dope in his own right. Fellow former Bad Boy artist Styles P makes two guest appearances on this album, and it's sad to say, but the beats he rhymes on here are hotter than anything that was on his latest album; while that maybe dissapointing for Styles, it certainly isn't for this album as Shrimp & Lobsta and Special are two of the tightest tracks on the album. Smig Dirtee makes two guest appearances, and he's average; as is I-Rocc, who makes one guest appearance. Besides those three artist I just mentioned, the only other artist to guest on this album is Ginuwine, who was known for making frequent guest appearances on Bad Boy albums back in the day. Loon also includes three disses to everyone's favorite target, Dipset, on this album in the form of the Elmo skit, the track 'cleverly' titled "Jimmy!," and the outro, which is a radio excerpt of himself and 40 Cal.

While it's nothing revolutionary, G. Dep and Loon's collaborative Bad Boy is a dope album that has a right in any hip-hop head's disc changer. Don't sleep on it.

Closer to 4 stars from G-Dep & Loon.......2007-03-11

The more I listen to this I'd say its more like a 4 star album. Typical Bad Boy fashion shown at work here, Puffy gets some good artists and rapes them out of their money after their 1st album letting them fade away - finally they got off the label and got back in the studio (G-Dep's "Child of the Ghetto" was very impressive in early 2001 and I never really Liked Loon much so I don't have his album - but he is very impressive on this one however). With only 10 songs on here (G-Dep is only on 7 of the 10), it is nice to hear from the 2 artists once again, although I think they could have put out a better/longer album - the main problem I think is the production, not many of the beats fit their style - Batkave does 7 songs (all are more or less average - 1 is good) and Cosmo does 3 impressive songs. Of the 10 songs, 4 are ok 6 are pretty good to good (a few being real good). A nice album for their fans to have.

G-Dep & Loon - Bad Boy.......2007-02-13

G-Dep (A.K.A. Ghetto Dependant, Travell Coleman) & Loon (A.K.A. Chauncey Hawkins) release a collobration album with "Bad Boy" (2007). The two harlem rappers and former Bad Boy Artist's provide a grimy release which features appearances from Styles P, Ginuwine, Smigg Dirtee. While Loon has released a couple of album's over the last few years, G-Dep has been relatively quiet having released some mixtape material. I was a fan's of G-Dep's debut solo album "Child of the Ghetto". This release reminds me of Cormega & Lake's "My Brother's Keeper" - two MC's from the same hood collaborating for a street album. The two MC's open the album off well with "Callin", a strong cut which is laced with an on point chorus and stellar production. G-Dep, Loon & Smigg Dirtee then deliver another solid collaboration with "Code Of The Streets". The next cut "Noodle" is a cut which has club friendly appeal, laced with a beat to dance to. My current favourite track on this release is "Special", Styles P of the Lox leads the way while G-Dep & Loon shine delivering outstanding lyrics and a memorable chorus. The three MC's reunite for the follow up "Shrimp & Lobsta" another banging cut. Ginuwine provides the background vocals for "Like Me", a track addressed to the ladies. The bizarre "Elmo" skit, is an opener for an impressive diss track directed at Jim Jones of the Diplomats. G-Dep & Loon demolish Jim Jones on "Jimmy", one of the dopest diss track's I have heard in awile. I personally think Jones music is garbage, his Pac biting pathetic, so I am not surprised to see other Harlem MC's exposing him for a fake and liar. The follow up cut "Blap Blap" is a street banger, to bump in the whip. Another outstanding track is ominous "The Story", feeling this joint which has G-Dep & Loon telling some real life stories. The album's closer has Loon talking about beating down 40 Cal. It's good to see G-Dep back at it, and I prefer Loon's music when he keep's it street. Nowadays Bad Boy Records is full of pop acts, manufactured music, and affiliated talentless artists like Young Joc - the label's best artist's are no longer around Biggie's dead, Black Rob & Shyne are incarcerated. G-Dep & Loon provide an independant album worth checking out with "Bad Boy".
