1 out of 5 stars Disappointing to this I Love Lucy Fan.......2004-10-05

Well, I hate to be so harsh, but I've actually thrown the disc out after listening to it once. I was expecting to hear the songs the way they were done on the show (I am a die-hard fan) -- with Desi's strong vibrant voice and upbeat tempos. And yes, there are moody songs as well, done with beautiful passion by Arnaz on the show -- but instead, songs like Cuban Pete were slowed down almost beyond recognition. Arnaz's voice also doesn't sound as rich and robust as it does on the show (a recording issue?).

I love it when they have Desi sing on the show, whether it be a fast tempo song or a romantic ballad, and I was SO hoping that playing this disc would be like I had taped it directly from the show. Unfortunately, this is not the case. I certainly would give credence to the positive reviews, however, as both reviewers seem well-versed in I Love Lucy/Desi Arnaz. And I respect a performer for waning to do a different interpretation -- but after listening to one version for 30 years, you can imagine that I was a bit thrown! :)

5 out of 5 stars DELIGHTS FROM DESI!.......2002-07-10

I must confess that I have been a dyed-in-the-wool fan of I LOVE LUCY since childhood - and because of that - Desi's music is special to hear. I personally think that his Orchestra was quite underrated; it really had a lovely sound which holds up very well...Remember Lucy and Ricky dancing the Tango to LA CUMPARSITA in the episode where Lucy winds up in Ricky's arms - with 2 dozen eggs smashed in her blouse? I remember the moody and wonderful SIMILAU done superbly by Ricky at the TROPICANA. Other oft-heard standards which are sure to delight fans include GREEN EYES, SIBONEY & GUADALAJARA. Only one complaint: THE STRAW HAT SONG isn't included!

5 out of 5 stars Desi arnaz's "Cocktail Hour".......2000-12-06

The CD collection is excellent! If you are an "I Love Lucy" fan, you will definitely be able to hear some of the more popular songs in their entirety. The songs are somewhat short, but very good. The songs with Amanda's accompaniment are truly sweet, as you will enjoy Amanda's beautiful voice.I am a huge fan of "I Love Lucy" and I own two other CD's featuring those songs that were a part of the hit show. I am ecstatic to own this CD collection because Desi's songs are true Cuban hits. Desi's voice truly captivates me and I can't stop listening to it!

It's hard to believe that Riverdance, which began as a 7-minute intermission act during the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, is already 10 years old. Nobody back then could have imagined that a new-fangled amalgam of Irish folk styles, light classical music a la Albert W. Ketelbey and Tin Pan Alley would top the charts, win a Grammy for Best Musical and go on to take the world by storm. But why re-record Riverdance, which is as deeply associated with its original time and context as Saturday Night Fever is with the 1970s? Yes, the Irish players, all of whom are master instrumentalists, still sound fresh, but the percussive dancing feet, minus visuals, gets old fast. The Macedonian, Spanish and Russian interpolations are great fun if a maybe bit patronizing around the edges. But haven't the misty chorales, New-Age-ridden cloaked-and-hooded sopranos and other portentous Celtic Twilight-isms long since descended into self-parody? --Christina Roden

2 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Much Better.......2005-12-31

It's too bad these songs from the late 1940s are in such sad shape. While the liner notes list Bill Lacey for 'Audio Restoration', the sound quality is still pretty poor.
The songs seem to be culled from singles and various film selections.
Jane Harvey and Amanda Lane pick up the vocals on a few of the songs, with Desi carrying the weight on others. 11 pages of liner notes and biography are included in this current packaging.
If you are looking for the Desi Arnaz excitement from his performances on the 'I Love Lucy' show of the later 1950s, this collection will leave you disappointed. While the seeds of his genius are here, Desi Arnaz, like Xavier Cugat in the same time period, only got better after these earlier recordings.
He certainly deserves better than this collection gives.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe my favorite CD.......2003-01-16

A friend first gave me this CD 5 years ago. At first I thought it was a joke, and that it would remind me of various I Love Lucy episodes. But I began listening to it at work and really came to appreciate Desi Arnaz's talent and the humor in the songs.

Many of them are catchy tunes you'll find yourself singing and rhumba-ing to across your living room. I highly recommend it as an entertaining pleasant CD for a party or for your own ambient listening. Forget the Cuban Pete you saw on I Love Lucy. The songs you'll hear are simply great Cuban-inspired music.

5 out of 5 stars Desi Arnez : Singer and actor.......2000-06-09

Desi Arnez is not only he is a great singer but marryed one of Hollywoods best actors Lucille Ball (For a short time .)Desi died in 1987 but his music well live on for years to come .

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful! If you love Great Orchestra's, and Latin Rythym.........2000-03-09

...You will indeed love the sounds of a more innocent time in the late 1940's. Desi Arnaz, in my opinion has been over-looked and under-rated. He is Sensational on this CD! A very scarce and hard to find CD! Go for it! D. Thomas

3 out of 5 stars Highly under-rated entertainer supremo.......1999-10-01

As a kid in Miami, my night club loving Grandmother would haul me around to the best floor shows....my favorite then and now ( 40 years later ) is Desi. He may not be the best vocalist, but the band, the arrangements and the sheer entertainment value is very, very solid. Fans of the TV show will certainly be pleased, but those who are looking to fill a niche in their collection of Latin or nightclub/lounge won't be disapointed.

4 out of 5 stars good smoking music.......2007-01-04

this is a chill album with some good beats. it's not as good as the first one but there are some great songs on it. the whole thing is great as background music

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-10-28

I'm coming from hearing Export quality first, then Desi Vibes (remastered). I thought Export quality to be an EXCELLENT album, very infectious. It's got that dance music done right kind of feeling to it. And if that makes you shudder, keep in mind that by 'done right' I mean produced well, creatively arranged and done with a quality aesthetic which holds throughout the album. Desi vibes is a little more stripped down, and a little more raw than export quality. Export quality shows a direct evolution in the production of their music, but desi vibes just has that rhythmic looped grit that Export quality JUST evades. The CD is very rhythmic, with various eastern instruments, scratches, one mc, and a plethora of creative and enjoyable melodies - while kicking out that constant beautiful backbone hip hop breakbeat.

The music is upbeat, well crafted and layered. Excellent, excellent CD. Has been in rotation constantly

5 out of 5 stars the drone that refreshes.......2005-09-27

I loved Dum Dum Project's subsequent album, Export Quality, but apparently for the wrong reasons. I love this album too, let's hope for better reasons.

My favorite track is Mind Expansion, whose eternal loop blends what sounds like a clueless tourist's question with a more dedicated practitioner's command. Jackson Heist is a close second, somehow combining a relentless beat with a loose sashay. Also frequently resident in my player is In Flight, which lives up to its name (somehow I feel I should be lining up at Customs when it's over ... OK, OK, I realize they're based in NY).

But the whole album hangs together - the drone that refreshes.

(Note: I am listening to the earlier 1999 edition, but for this review I don't incluide the 3 tracks that this new 2004 edition lacks.)

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding East-West fusion CD.......2004-07-08

This is my favorite CD. It's a great, lively, tap-your-feet, east-west fusion CD. Here's what it's not:
- too dancey/hip-hop
- too indian
- too anything

It's an especially awesome train/car commute CD - keeps you awake and humming along. Buy this now!!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The music that made Taal such a great film.......2005-10-26

A. R. Rahman did the score for the film Taal, so you know the soundtrack has to be good. In fact, it was good enough to win Rahman a Filmfare Award for best musical score. At the same time, Anand Bakshi won best lyricist for Ishq Bina, Rakesh Ranjan took home the award for best sound recording, and Alka Yagnik was named best female singer. The Taal soundtrack combines a number of high-energy tracks with a couple of gorgeous ballads.

The centerpiece of the entire score really is Ishq Bina, which is just a beautiful song about how wonderful true love can be. It was during this song that Mansi, Ashwaryai Rai's character, truly fell for the smitten Manav early on in the movie - and the music itself has a giddy air to it that aptly reflects the first buds of love between a man and woman. The song is reprised toward the end of the film, with Mansi singing a decidedly sadder version after learning about Manav's selfless display of his love for her. Nahin Samne Tu is an even more touching number than Ishq Bina. It is a slow, romantic, almost mournful song that also manages to maintain a certain air of hopefulness and sense of destiny; this is the song Manav sang when it began to appear as if Mansi might not come back to him after all.

Kariye Na is the song that plays during the opening scene, reflecting a quiet, folksy sort of sound with emphasis on the lyrics, but songs such as this in the film soon gave way to electronically enhanced, heavily produced numbers reflecting the more modern, somewhat Westernized beats and sounds of the big city. Ramta Jogi leads the pack in this regard with its evocative lyrics and wildly energetic, upbeat sound. Taal Se Taal Mila is another in the get up and dance mode, maintaining a solid drum beat while also delivering some passionate vocals. Kahin Aag Lage is an interesting song, effecting several significant transitions from start to finish. Personally, I didn't find the energetic parts quite energetic enough or the romantic parts quite romantic enough - but it's still a perfectly good song. This is, in fact, a rock solid soundtrack from start to finish.

You don't have to understand the words to enjoy these songs, as good music is good music wherever you find it. I only wish I knew more about the music of India so that I could better describe these twelve tracks. All I can say it that I do believe much of the music of Taal will appeal to Western ears because of the upbeat, percussion-driven nature of so many of the songs. As far as I'm concerned, though, Ishq Bina and Nahin Samne Tu in and of themselves make this a must-have CD.

5 out of 5 stars Soaring vocals and beautiful compositions.......2004-12-31

"Taal" was my first introduction to Bollywood musicals and it was a phenominal experience. The music is an impressive conglomeration of complex Indian percussion and beautifully exquisite female vocals juxtaposed with Western beats and surprising melodic transitions. A.R. Rahman justly deserves his title as the king of Bollywood scores.

The movie itself features some excellent cinematography and vivid, artistic scenes. Ayshwaryh Rai is nothing less than beautiful and enchanting as the female lead. The plot, however, like most musicals, is vapid and predictable. This can be overlooked easily, though, due to the evocative majesty of Rahman's score, the amazing choreography and the beauty of the Indian countryside and people.

    4 out of 5 stars Lovely songs.......2005-03-24

I was in India when the movie was released a couple of months ago, and saw and heard for myself what a buzz this movie and the songs created. The buzz was based on 2 factors. The first is that the music is based on the works of the late music director Madan Mohan, and the second was that Lata Mangeshkar who just turned 75 has sung about 9 of those songs. (I am not a big fan of Lata, I prefer Asha Bhonsle instead). Not all the songs are good, but on the whole this is a good music album.

5 out of 5 stars For the Love of Veer Zaara.......2005-01-22

If you think you have heard best of hindi music, think again! Until you hear the music of Veer Zaara, you haven't heard anything!

I am not an Indian and I don't understand Hindi. I went to see the movie because the movie trailers carried music that was divine to my ears. I believe that a true lover of music appreciates the music for itself and not just for the lyrics; hence the lyrics can be in German, Chinese or Portugees. Of course, I have to mention that the lyrics are wonderful and very, very touching (I depended on the subtitles while watching the movie)

The music of this CD/film had been created by late Mr. Madan Mohan. It is said that his son has found some 120 songs (music) after his death and these tunes have been recreated in Veer Zaara thirty years after his death (doesn't that itself sounds bit like a movie?).

If you buy the original CD set which consists of two CDs, it will be a treasure for any collector or for any hindi music/movie fan. The CD carries 9 songs from the movie VZ, and two bonus songs. The critics describe the movie, Veer Zaara as having an overdose of emotions, which is quite true. If you watch the movie, these songs will have much more meaning when you hear them.

The song `Tere Liye' by Latha Mangeshkar and Roop Kumar Rathod would undoubtedly be the most popular and has also been nominated for two awards; while my favourite being `Do pal' which makes the movie trailer of the parting couple run in my head every time I hear it.

The music... is beautiful - simply beautiful....

    5 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-11-01

This soundtrack is one of the best Shahrukh Khan film soundtracks of all time. Every song has brilliant depth, great vocals, great music and great lyrics. A real representation of the quality that Indian music can have.

4 out of 5 stars Keep 'em Coming!!.......2005-12-15

DD&B were my first teen idol crushes! I am so glad that they are putting their albums on CD. I had "The Rebel Kind" CD, but listening to the original albums bring back so many fun memories! Desi was my favorite, so I enjoy listening to "Act Naturally" and "Desi's Drums." I hope they will release the "Memories Are Made of This" and "Souvenir" albums soon! (Would love to hear Desi singing "Baby, Scratch My Back")
I think Billy and Desi were better singers than Dino.
Buy this one for a groovy trip back to your teenage years!

The movie may have left a lot to be desired, but the music is
"contemporary" India. Upbeat and infectious. My favorite is
the title track, "Dil Chahta Hai."
