Released as a companion piece to the award-winning book Lullabies: An Illustrated Songbook, this hour-plus of music is a wonderful mix of stately classical themes and child-friendly vocals. The selections range from "All the Pretty Little Horses" to a global spread of lullabies drawn from classical and folk traditions. The music is spare, with Kapp on piano, Julianne Baird and Kapp's daughter Madeline on vocals, and Mela Tenenbaum on violin, viola, and occasional vocals. Most of the classical selections (from Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Edmund Elgar, W.A. Mozart, et al.) get a straight-ahead, accomplished treatment. Lest you think the project stuffy, each of the melodies is in the one- to two-minute range, which effectively mandates a stronger sense of flow than most children's collections. Kapp, who managed to create a visual and poetic flow in the Lullabies book, keeps things nicely in a groove here, knowing enough to segue into silly tracks about halfway through the CD to provide a wider emotional range. I love this CD. It's very well-done, and the approach is different than most children's CDs - very refined, yet soothing. I don't get tired of listening to it the way I do others -- which is important when trying to get a little one to sleep! I highly recommend it and the companion book.

Simple and sweet songs.......2006-04-02

With just piano, violin and vocals, this is a simple and heartfelt album. Ms. Baird's voice conveys the full emotions that a mother feels for her new baby with clean and open singing. The first track in particular, "All Through The Night," still makes me teary. I played this in the hospital when my son was born, and we use it as part of our wind-down ritual. I do agree that some of the songs are a little upbeat for bedtime. We just skip those in the evening (using iTunes).

Marvellous cd, enchanting music.......2005-10-18

Our whole family loves this cd. I am continually charmed and refreshed by the subtlety, taste and musicianship that has gone into these arrangements of well- and lesser-known gems. Apart from the joy of the simple yet perfect chordal progressions, listen to the warm, caressing tone imparted by the low bass notes in the piano in many of the tracks. The pace is so wonderfully leisurely, there is time to savour each song or piece, and yet each lasts only two or three minutes. The three diverse yet complementary singers, each with a tender and gentle presence suiting the subject matter, give a sense of a 19th century family musical evening. Magical.

Good if you want to sing from the book but can't read music.......2004-02-10

I bought this solely because I have the book and wanted to sing the lullabies to my kids, but I can't read music. For this purpose it is fine. The songs are not in the same order as in the book but I can deal. As a stand-alone lullaby CD I wouldn't really recommend it--the songs are not sung in a soothing manner, there's lots of variety in tempo and volume, some are even sung up-beat. The voices are not pitched high enough for babies either. That being said, I am back on Amazon today to buy it for my sister who is due any day now with her 3rd kid--we both like to sing and have the book, and songs (in book or music form) are a great present that the baby won't grow out of for a long time, and helps you bond with your little one too.

Didn't like the voice........2002-12-11

I bought this cd to go with the book and it is very frustrating because the songs on this cd are not even in the same order as the book. The singing voice fluctuates too much, it will be really soft and then it gets really high pitch. And if you have the volume set at a lower level for some songs then you can't hear other songs. I think there are better cds to buy than this one.

Easily one of the most creative hip-hop albums of 2003, Lyrics Born's Later That Day fulfills the potential that this Bay Area artist has been promising for years. Like Andre 3000's The Love Below, Later That Day transcends genres and sensibilities--LB embraces an aesthetic that owes at least as much to disco and new wave as it does to hip-hop and the result is an album that packs surprises through every turn. His impressive song-craft helps organize the album as a morning-to-night narrative, with LB waking to nightmares on "Bad Dreams," then sparring with telemarketers on the humorous "Cold Call," and ending his day with girl drama on "Love Me So Bad." Along the way, he picks up a few friends--especially singer Joyo Valerde, whose soaring voice helps the album indelibly gel together and skater-turned-musician Tommy Guerrero whose funk chops help spice up the beats. It's still all Lyrics Born though--this album radiates his presence like the sun and basking in his creative glow is half the fun. --Oliver Wang

This is a great album with an insane amount of energy that if you listen to it. . .right before you go out for the night, run errands, take a long drive, then this is the album that is a necessity in a music collection.
Though too much of a good thing, is never a good thing, so moderate intake with the previous album.
Switch it up, go crazy, do whatever just do something. I gotta run some errands now.

not bad but too much filler.......2007-02-16

No one questions Lyrics Born's talent, which can be matched by few. His breakneck delivery will make you swear they sped him up in the studio, except then if you go see him do it live (recommended: he is a charismatic performer) you realize they didn't.

The problem with this release is not, therefore, Lyrics Born himself. It's just that there's not enough interesting things happening around him. There are handful of standout songs on this record, but there is no excuse for it running as many tracks as it does. The skits remind me why I sometimes think the whole idea of skits on CDs tired itself out in about 1997, if not earlier. Worse, the fillers sound similar to the hits but less memorable, making the whole album kind of drag, and the grooves, guitar licks and keys, all of which are good in small doses, become sort of flat after a time, especially when Joyo Velarde isn't singing backup vox. Surely a few of the songs could have become B-sides on the single, or something, instead of bloating the album itself.

Do That There, Rise and Shine, and One Session are my favorite tracks, the ones I would say go buy from the iTunes store or something right now. There's nothing wrong with the rest, I just don't find myself listening to them much. I like the concept of Later That Day but it should probably take less time out of the day to listen to.

Must Have.......2006-06-30

Sick, sick, sick .. no matter what your feelings are on hip hop this album is a must have. Tight beats, solid lyrics, great mix. Lyrics Born shows why he is a force to be reckoned with.

It's Worth It.......2006-01-07

This was my introduction to Lyrics Born so I had no preconceived notions nor hopes of what this cd should be; thus, I am not disappointed. My introduction to LB came from the international channel, or AZN as it's called now, believe it or not.

I saw the video for The Last Trumpet and was blown away. I loved the way he flowed and I liked the overall vibe of the track. This caused me to hunt down LB, listen to samples, and buy the cd. I just finished listening to it for the first time and I found it entertaining, creative, and yes something I'd listen to repeatedly. Granted, I didn't love the whole thing, but what cd grabs you from note 1 to note last nowadays? NONE!

For me Later That Day starts with track 4, Callin' Out, which is my favorite, and goes from there. I will admit I am not particularly fond of the female who sings the hooks and chorus on too many of his songs. Her voice is too high, or shrilly, or something...it's just no. However, when Lyrics Born starts, she's easy to tune out.

When I think of the music I bought when this cd came out in 2003 and how dissatisfied I was with almost everything, I wish I would have had this. When I think of all the cringe worthy music that will be out this year, I'm damn glad I have it now.

A noble effort.......2005-11-02

Actually, I rate it 3.5 stars.

The creative ingenuity of this album is a bit small when it comes to this large Asian man. Lyrics Born's solo album doesn't quite live up to the Quannum crew's standards. But it still is a noble effort that turned out some excellent tracks- the album isn't a complete flop in its entirety, it's just dull.

The album doesn't pack enough punch to interest the average LB fan. It had way too many skits and filler songs that just weren't exciting. If anything, the album seemed not under or over-produced.... more like, incorrectly-produced- which is a shocking miss for LB. The chorus for many songs were monotonous, especially the songs in which he tries to sing. I say leave the singing to Joyo Velarde, who is a divine songstress and the highlight of this album.

On the good side, some tracks were excellent, like the soulful "Rise and Shine," the ever-pounding Bay-pride anthem "Callin' Out," and the emotional and intense ride of "The Last Trumpet," featuring Lateef. Finally, this album is worth picking up just for one track alone, "Love Me So Bad," which is by far the sexiest, most rhythmic, and funkiest song released by the Quannum crew. It's a hypnotic track. Sadly, the rest are mediocre.

It seems that Lyrics Born alone in the studio doesn't cut it to be the powerhouse he was when he collaborates with others. Which is why the follow up album "Same (blank) Different Day" is an excellent improvement. "Later That Day" just seems too raw and misguided- the remix album is a considerate touch-up. It still is a noble effort, though. And it sure is a lot better than Gift of Gab's solo album- that review's coming soon.

Album Description

The Wizard of Oz a musical with book and lyrics by L. Frank Baum and music by Paul Tietjens premiered on June 16, 1902, at the Grand Opera House in Chicago. It was an instant hit and made stars of David Montgomery (the Tin Woodman) and Fred Stone (the Scarecrow). On January 21, 1903 the show opened at the Majestic Theatre in New York. It ran for nine months and set out on the road with a second company right on its heels. The show toured, came back to New York, toured, and returned to New York again many times until finally disbanding around 1911. Stock and amateur companies continued to present it into the 1930s when it was overshadowed by the classic MGM film starring Judy Garland.

The show was legendary for its success and its impact on American culture. It was the Cats or Les Mis of the early 1900s--but the show has been swallowed by history. What made audiences of the early 1900s devour the show and return for more again and again? A Collection of the Original Oz Stage Productions.......2006-12-07

This Double-Disk Collection contains music from the original and varied Oz Stage Productions: "the Wizard of Oz", "the Woggle-Bug" (based on 'Marvelous Land of Oz) and "the Tik-Tok Man of Oz" (based on 'Ozma of Oz'). There are plenty of "Wizard" songs and music, but there isn't a lot of "Woggle-Bug" and/or "Tik-Tok Man".
I often wondered how different the 1st & Original Production of 'Oz Wizard' was different to the book, and thanks to Mark Evan Schwartz's book "Oz: Before the Rainbow" I found out for myself (WORTH A READ!!). Later I got this CD to go along with the book's stage telling (more or less) and I listened in interest to the songs which, I read, were entirely different to the future Musicals of Oz. The songs are good, but not all of them are actually completely restored to perfection, so the singing may/will sound somewhat muffled. Also, due to the time it was made (for some reason), the songs don't actually fit into the story (even the stage's rewritten story) and sound distant/unrelated. But there are songs that sound similar to the original story ("Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King"). CD 2's Track 3 has music played during Silent Oz Film "His Majesty, Scarecrow" on the MGM 3-Disk DVD.
The best thing about this CD Collection is the two booklets packaged along with the disks: the first (entitled "The Records") has writing on "What the Wizard Was" with a synopsis of the stage production story and "About the Recordings", a listing of all the songs on CD 1 (which are helpful for "Selection" Tracks not specifically named on the back) and notes on the songs like their origins and background. Booklet 2 (entitled "The Lyrics") has the words to the songs (in case you can't make out the words/want to sing-along). BOTH CDs include b&w photos of the actors, performance (few of which can be seen in "Oz: Before the Rainbow" book) and even reprints of a few illustrations made for the stage. The pictures are the best part of this purchase.
The Entirely Different Songs may not fit with the story, original or rewritten, but there's nothing really wrong with the music when one enjoys to what they're listening to.
I know that there is also another 'Oz on Stage' CD Collection called "Before the Rainbow" . . . hmmm, I wonder if I should get that too?

Ain't it a Shame!.......2006-05-20

I think that this is a wonderful album of HISTORICAL value. Not too many people know this, but "the wizard of oz" was made into a smash hit in 1903, but because all the history was BARELY in obscurity, hungry tiger press wanted to educate the blockheads in the world about this remarkable piece of history. that being said, david maxine collected all of the old material, such as Piano rolls (my especial favorite of all of them is "the poppy song", i LOVE the bass notes: "nnn-ded-deh mmmm-ded-deh"), and music boxes, and cylinders, and records!
however, it is quite a shame that that CRAPPY movie with judy garland pushed this lovely musical into obscurity. i would have liked to see it in my day, but it was already lost in darkness, but thanks to the highly DIGNIFIED people in the world, this cd is available!! BUY IT!!!! I *ORDER* YOU!!! YOU CANNOT BE DIGNIFIED WITHOUT THIS REPLACING YOUR "RAP" GARBAGE WITH THIS JEWEL!!!!

Why the 1903 "Wizard" was forgotten.......2004-03-20

This truly remarkable 2-disc collection of old cylinders, discs, music boxes and piano rolls explains why the 1903 musical version of "The Wizard of Oz" did not survive the early thirties. It wasn't because it was before its time or even of its time, but simply because it was way behind the times. Its producers resisted composer's Paul Tietjens' attempts to write plot-driven numbers. His contribution survives only in the incidental music preserved on piano rolls (and the most interesting element on this collection) linking very disparate and even incongruous vaudeville acts by various authors and performers that graced the stage during the musical's multi-decade run. In other words, Baum was telling a story and the songs were telling another... As fascinating as they are for historical reasons, those numbers are commonplace, mostly uninspired flash-in-the-tin-pan ditties, with timid syncopation and a stong reliance on musical clichés. There is not a single standard among them and not even a decent lyric where "fine" doesn't rhyme with "mine" and "love you" doesn't rhyme with "I do"- or even "I know you know I know you do", as happens more than once. As an assemblage of shtick pieces and ephemeral sentimental or nonsensical ditties, this collection cannot be topped and it represents a monumental effort. Without it and its very generous and informative liner notes, I would not have the same appreciation for the absolute genius of Victor Herbert's operettas ("Babes in Toyland" came out the same year) where the more memorable songs are plot-driven and introduced and linked by the most luscious, inventive and varied incidental music ever heard outside an opera house. This sort of unified concept would culminate in Jerome Kern's "Show Boat" and it remains a truth today that the integration of plot and music - reminiscent of opera - is the true secret of successful and perennial musicals, whatever the current idiom. This collection also makes one appreciate the complete originality of the Hollywood film for actually going back to Baum's books, entrusting the songs, lyrics and music to Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg and Herbert Stothart and scrapping the musical's colourful but checkered history (except for casting ex-vaudevillians as the main characters, of course!). Highly recommended for its nostalgia value, its irreplaceable rarities and a better understanding of the history of American popular music.

A long overdue revisit to a classic American musical.......2003-09-30

Although it was one of the most financially successful stage musicals of the early 1900's, very little information is presently available on the 1903 production of THE WIZARD OF OZ. In what was obviously a labor of love, David Maxine has done much to correct this oversight by releasing a 2-CD set with over 145 minutes worth of extremely rare recordings of music from this and other OZ-themed musicals dating back to before World War I. Recorded materials include vintage acoustical disc and cylinder phonograph records, piano rolls, and music box discs, many of which go back almost a century. In addition, he has included two booklets worth of historical background information on the 1903 WIZARD OF OZ production, its stars, the individual musical numbers, and lyrics for the songs included on the CDs. (Lavishly illustrated with rare old black and white photos and artwork, these booklets, and the information they contain, are themselves worth the price of the set!) Several bonus CD tracks are included that offer rare recordings by Montgomery & Stone (the original Tin Woodsman and Scarecrow) and Bessie Wynn, who was also in the 1903 cast. Not just for dedicated Oz fans, this set is a "must have" for anyone interested in the history of American musical theater and American popular culture of the early 1900's.

Long-Forgotten Broadway Hit Gets First Rate Revival.......2003-09-17

One hundred and three years ago, author L. Frank Baum published the best-selling children's book of the 20th century, THE WIZARD OF OZ. Although the book was adapted several times as plays, silent motion pictures, animated cartoons, and radio shows in the next few decades, it is the 1939 MGM film that most people think of as THE WIZARD OF OZ. The success and popularity of that film completely eclipsed the memories of previous incarnations and even the book itself in popular culture. However, prior to the film's release, there was a successful stage version which premiered on Broadway in 1903 and delighted audiences for many years, making stars of Fred Stone and David Montgomery, the original Scarecrow and Tinman. As with the MGM film, chilren who saw THE WIZARD OF OZ on stage carried fond memories of the production into adulthood. Ray Bolger was so impressed with the Fred Stone's Scarecrow, that he remembered it vividly as an adult and based his own protrayal of the character in the movie on Mr. Stone's stage version.

Unfortunately, time and Judy Garland have pushed the once popular Broadway Smash into history. It has been all but forgotten...until now.

As the show moved from theater to theater and casts changed, so did the songs. Many of these were recorded on the primative equipment of the day: Wax cylinders, 78-RPM records, piano rolls, and music Boxes, and surprisingly many of these still exist. Now, thanks to those hard-working gents at HUNGRY TIGER PRESS, you can own these historic recordings on this awesome 2-CD set. THE WIZARD OF OZ: Vintage Recordings From The 1903 Broadway Musical contains over 145 minutes of terrific early 20th century music. You won't find "Over the Rainbow" or "Ding! Dong! The Witch Is Dead!" here. Instead, this WIZARD OF OZ contains tracks like "Budweiser's a Friend of Mine", "Sammy", "Hurrah for Baffin's Bay", and "Rejoice! The Wizard is No Longer King", each one a portal over the rainbow to the Broadway stage of a century ago.

Obviously the play was quite different in plot from the movie--Dorothy travelled to Oz with her cow Imogene instead of Toto, for starters--, but the songs represent the style of popular music of 100 years ago and are collected here in a beautiful compilation. The set contains two booklets of liner notes which contain credits, lyrics, a written history of the production, and are extensively illustrated with photos and illustrations. Although the sound quality of the source material is not always up to today's standards, the songs are presented in the best versions possible, and the music is highly enjoyable. With 60 tracks and the wealth of information contained here, both written and photographic, this 2-CD set is good value for the money. A must-have for all collectors of WIZARD OF OZ memorabilia, an insightful look at popular music and Broadway history from a century ago, a glimpse into ethnic and racial stereotypes that were accepted at the time, and a curiosity for fans of the 1939 film, this set is big on appeal. Kudos to the Hungry Tiger Press for rescuing this treasure trove of musical history from obscurity!

This band is a breath of fresh air admist all the "britney's" and "christina's" of the world (no offense)! The CD is absobloodlylutely marveulous. The music is completely original, the lyrics are quirky, and I hope the Sluts of Trust are here to stay. I COMPLETELY recommend this!

Much, Much More..........2004-08-31

I have a problem, not something of any real consequence, mind, but an annoyance none the less. I find myself telling eveyone I meet about the Sluts of Trust, yet when one of my dearest friends asks to borrow my copy, I start growling and revert to my primitive defences, as if I were protecting my last living child, instead of a used CD. Oh and if they want to burn it, it's not pretty. Primatively, think of the meaning of 'burning' (pause). Yeah. Not to mention the fact that you would not be rendering the the proper dues to the artist. (you think I'm obbsessive of the CD? Look a little deeper.) So formally unbenouced,(as of two minutes ago) I proffess my love of the glorious Sluts of Trust, publicly. (a group of high school Sophomores aren't as public as it may seem) Needless to say I probably need another copy so I wont feel deprived while enlightening new sluts, as we all are, most are only in the deepest ignorance imaginable, while I'm drumming my two fore fingers to the various beats of 'Greatest Gift'. It's a vicious cycle.

Sluts of Trust are the best new band right now. They are totally original. Their songs like "Piece o You" and "Leave You Wanting More" are the best. They are full of hard rock riffs and memorable lyrics. They are confrontation and in your face. They are amazing live. It's a record to get. We are all sluts of trust.

I'm afraid I could hardly write a review to do the band justice. No matter what rock you like, you're more than likely to be hooked on to the Sluts, or at least intrigued by them. John's riffs are amazing; Anthony's beats are jaw dropping. Their raw tunes bring you back to your primitive roots and the combination of guitar, drums, and vocals are mind blowing. It's hard to believe that only two guys are making all of that noise. Sometimes the vocals are flawed, but it only adds to their unique quatlity that makes the Sluts such a gem.

Seeing them perform is like being in the presence of a guitar god accompanied by Jesus on the drums. If you ever get a chance to see them live, do. There is just no comparison for them. The Sluts of Trust is an uncommon duo, but that is what makes them wonderful. Get their first album while you can; these guys are going places.

Many Voices is the CD debut from Vermont resident John Sullivan. Sullivan, in late 2003, performed with Badfinger and Jon Butcher during some East Coast concert dates. Many Voices is an appropriate title for a CD which sometimes reminds one of later day John Prine, the alternative rock of the Foo Fighters and there is even a techno sounding tribute to George Harrison (India Crys). Sullivan has over 30 years of experience making music, even though this is his first "official" release. According to Sullivan, "Now just felt like the right time for my original songs to be heard. And the flood gates have opened because I am already working on my next CD." For those willing to take a chance on this "new" artist, you will be rewarded with a great CD and you'll wonder why John Sullivan took so long to let his "Many Voices" be heard.
