Who is Chutzpah?
The question is best answered - in the tradition of the Jewish people with another question: Who wants to know? For those in the know about the truth behind Jewish Hip Hop, the name has already become legend. For everyone else it is still shrouded in mystery. This bio is for everyone else. Chutzpah the first ever Jewish Hip Hop Supergroup have been together, on and off, for as long as anyone can remember. Brought together by the magisterial Dr. Dreck, a profoundly influential figure in the annals of Hip Hop, the trio consists of Master Tav - the lead rapper, MC Meshuggenah the slightly unhinged one, and their tag along fourth, Jew Da the Jewish/Rastafarian, toaster/philosopher. Chutzpahs worldwide debut release, "Chutzpah (eponymous)" hits the streets in early November. Their holiday video "Chanukahs da Bomb," along with a making of video called "Chutzpah this is?" will also be made available as a DVD. Which brings us back to the question of who they are Dr. Dreck: Reports that he invented scratching on a Victrola in 1948 have never been substantiated, but since that was the year after his Bar Mitzvah, its just possible enough to be true. His contributions to the growth of the movement have been significant. He claims that Dr. Dre came along, took his name and dropped the ck. His mysterious connection to actor George Segal has only fanned the flames of mystery surrounding the group. Master Tav: He was still a sincere cantorial student when Dr. Dreck saw his potential and encouraged him to try his hand at rhyming. Tav took to it like a duck to water and soon left his studies to pursue a recording career. He developed his signature style of fast and fluid rap, honing it to perfection with the encouragement of his mentor. Now, in a classic case of the student surpassing the teacher, Master Tav has become the driving force and creative center of Chutzpah. MC Meshuggenah: Hes literally the wildcard in the group. He has been cared for by Dr. Dreck since, at a very young age, it became apparent that his parents couldnt handle his erratic behavior. Having been raised by a DJ like Dr. Dreck, he has an almost inborn sense of rhythm and rhyme. His love for being the center of attention has occasionally derailed the recording process, but Tav and Dreck have both assured us that he is OK to tour, and his medication doses are being closely monitored.
As is often the case with influential artists, their own road has been a bumpy one. From crises of faith (Master Tav), and steady acting engagements (Dr. Dreck) to the occasional stay in a psychiatric hospital (MC Meshuggenah) the group has encountered numerous obstacles. Finally, the now legendary demos they recorded over the years reached the ears of David McLees, the President of a new Jewish record label, Jewish Music Group, and Chutzpah was signed!
The wait is over. The band will be touring in support of their release.

Much as the outtake and B-side collection Dead Letter Office anthologizes the many oddities of R.E.M., 1988's Eponymous is a document testifying to the astounding strength of their formative I.R.S. years. Eponymous reinforces the notion that the inchoate R.E.M. was a rare and brilliant gem of a group. While a somewhat brief CD, it provides quality listening from start to finish with hits such as "The One I Love," "(Don't Go Back to) Rockville," and "Driver 8" tucked amid the likes of an alternate take of "Finest Worksong" and the wonderfully mysterious "Gardening at Night." Especially noteworthy is the inclusion of the original seven-inch version of "Radio Free Europe," the band's 1981 release. --Lorry FlemingAmazon.com

More Than in Name Only.......2006-09-28
Specifically, the punkier version of "Radio Free Europe" does "squish the [other] recording like a grape," as bassist Mike Mills renders it, but it doesn't make the 'Murmur' album version extraneous, either. All of the rest of the songs show a versatality these perfectionists mastered, including folk-rock "Talk About the Passion", New Wave ("Gardening at Night"), country-accented rock ("Don't Go Back to Rockville"), and, even jazzy music with guitar that has the trajectory of the Ramones ("Can't Get There from Here"). All in all, despite the particular criticisms, 'Eponymous' can jump start or cap off a fine R.E.M. C.D. collection.
Eponymous in name only.......2006-08-12
At the time he wrote that review, Eponymous was the only place where you could find the Hib-tone version of Radio Free Europe. That will change when R.E.M. releases a new I.R.S. years compilation a month from when this review was written. Now, the different vocal mix of Gardening At Night and the mutual drum-horn mix of Finest Worksong can be found on a couple of rare b-sides collections (namely "R.E.M. In The Attic" and "R.E.M. Singles Collected"), but the only other place you can find the song Romance is on the Made In Heaven soundtrack, which--as far as I know--has never been released on CD; only on cassette and vinyl.
So, with all that out of the way, I can move on. Eponymous was my first R.E.M. album ever. I found it one day in my brother's drawer, and I never looked back. This is a very good album for people who want to get familiar with pre-Warner Brothers R.E.M. stuff, but with that being said, it barely scratches the surface of their early work.
On the more technical side of things, the album suffers from many of the typical problems found in early CDs: not much bass, brittle treble, and rather poor dynamics. Be that as it may, it's still a good starting point for the uninitiated and a great collector's item for the die-hard fan.
Great collection of R.E.M. classics.......2006-08-11
Essentially a 'Best of' collection of REM.......2005-02-21
Made me a convert.......2005-01-15
Of course, being a greatest hits compilation, all the songs here are great, but there are some alternative mixes here for fans who already have these songs on the studio releases. There is a different version of "Radio Free Europe" here although I like the one on Murmur better. The bass stands out more on the Murmur mix whereas the bass on this album's version is less prominent and seems to be covered up as well as some of the other sound details. I do prefer the different vocal mix to "Gardening at Night" than the one on Chronic Town. The Chronic Town version has very weak sounding vocals which had a negative effect on the song. The vocals here are a lot clearer so the song sounds much better. I disagree with the note on the record sleeve that the Eponymous version of "Finest Worksong" (the 12" and 7" version) is better than the original off Document. This mix has a horn section that I do not care for. A track that some R.E.M. fans may not have is "Romance." It is a very early track that surfaced on the "Made in Heaven" soundtrack (a film I have never heard of but it briefly plays this track). It turns out to be one of my favorite R.E.M. songs. The intense bass really drives the song and makes it unique. Eponymous is worth picking up for that track alone. Eponymous also includes interesting comments about each track.

The Hip Hop Heeb Invasion.......2006-03-27
If you don't know what I am talking about you have to get this CD because it has a 160 word Jewish glossary that explains it all! Mazel tov Chutzpah!
Phat Hip Hop and that's that!.......2006-03-26
Good, but check out Hip Hop Hoodios or Blood of Abraham for real Jewish hip-hop.......2006-01-06
But unfortunately, Chutzpah also follows the lengthy trail of Jewish hip-hop parody (see 2 Live Jews, M.O.T., 50 Shekel, etc). If you want to hear real Jewish hip-hop that isn't so much parody, but creative and offering a real cultural twist to the hip-hop genre, check out Latino-Jewish crew Hip Hop Hoodios new album "Agua Pa' La Gente" or Eazy-E protegees Blood of Abraham, whose album 'Eye Dollar Tree' was recently re-issued.

Get A Less Expensive CD of This Album.......2006-06-14
The problem is that the older copy I bought years ago sounds terrible - muddy low volume, poor dynamics. I bought THIS Japanese import hoping that the sound would be much better, since I've had good experiences with other Japanese issued CDs.
Unfortunately this CD is EXACTLY like the domestic version. The Amazon listing shows an issue date of July 3, 2003. But the actual CD has an issue date of 1988! Needless to say I am very disappointed, having spent over $25 for a disc I already have, that I could have purchased again for a mere $2.00 --- WHAT A RIPOFF!
Buyers, beware - you have been warned...
