3 out of 5 stars electronic rock?!.......2007-07-07

Luis Mejia (son) - Jethro Tull had always different forms and techniques to play rock, even when they came mixing rock with blues and folk, but this is truly a big step Jethro took by making electronic rock. It's not a miss, don't get me wrong, they're a lot of tracks that didn't lose the rock genre, such as Raising Steam, Jump Start and Farm On the Freeway, excellent songs based mainly on Barre's guitar, and in these songs the electronical arrengements were few and nice, but in the other side they're songs that are almost completely new for Jethro Tull style, specially the first track, Steel Monkey, wich is a song with nice arrengemets and melodies, but not for putting it on the first track.

Jethro experimentations have always being copletely different and brutal, switching from blues to prog, from prog to hard rock, and so on, and I regard Crest Of A Knave as the most brutal of all their experimentations. It was also awkward that they didn't follow the new techno pattern, instead they decided to continue with rock, like in Rock Island, but it was to expect more electronic arrengements since past albums, specially those seen in A and Under Wraps.

Another aspect to consider is Ian Anderson's voice, in result of a recent operation his voice changed, in this album is still nice to hear, but I heard later On Every Street of Dire Straits and I thought it was the same singer! (really, as this was my first Jethro album).

It was funny to me when I heard the situation about the hard rock grammy, which of course it was totally ridiculous, imagine the poor Jethro being booed by the audience, and all the accusations including fraud and all the insults (like the famous "the flute is a heavy, metal instrument").

In conclussion Jethro didn't make a big effort here, or they did too much, but still nice and comfortable to hear discounting all the other aspects.

5 out of 5 stars Jethro Tull - Metal Grammy? No, But A Great Album.......2007-06-08

Unfortunately for Jethro Tull most people know this album for having the dubious honor of winning the first best "heavy metal / hard rock" category at the Grammy awards in 1988. It has become a running joke over the years since Tull beat out several true metal acts such as Metaillca for the award. The album has served as a continuous punch line of jokes at awards shows ever since. The sad thing about all of this is, that this really is a great Tull album and I think it was very cool that it was awarded a Grammy (even if it was not in the right category). "Crest" marked a bit of a comeback for Jethro Tull. The band had not fared so well in the 80's putting out several so so albums that were completely ignored by radio. Sales figures had slipped significantly during this period as well. With the release of "Crest" the band actually received praise from the critics and two songs, "Steel Monkey" and "Farm On The Freeway" were actually heard quite a bit on AOR radio. The "band" by this point had been reduced down to just Ian Anderson, Martin Barre and Dave Pegg. This album rocks in places and simmers in a cool mellow way in others. There is very little of the band's folk-ish sound to be found here, and the album was very modern sounding for it's time. The opener "Steel Monkey" almost sounds like 80's era ZZ Top. Martin Barre has some great stuff here and I think this is one of his best albums. There are some great songs on this disc especially "Farm On The Freeway", "Budapest", Mountain Men", and the sexual double meaning "Raising Steam". The only negative thing really is that by this time Anderson's voice was continuing to deteriorate, but for the most part things are notched down a peg and he sounds good here. Although different from their earlier works I have always really like this album and thought that it was a nice return to form for the band at the time of it's release.

4 out of 5 stars different.......2007-05-26

I've always enjoyed this 'album' as being Jethro Tull in a different sound. Tull is my all time favorite group, partially because of their versatility.

3 out of 5 stars Completely conventional but occasionally interesting.......2007-04-13

Perhaps better known as "The one that won the Grammy", and Crest actually isn't all that bad of a record. I'd go out on a limb and say it's better than Thick as a Brick (yeah, I know if you dig deep enough in my profile you'll find a five-star review on that one, but it's only rated that high as of today because I'm too lazy to edit it - as of now, I'd give it two stars. Clearly, my mind's changed). Anyway, this is actually quite a good record for a band that walked off an artistic cliff after their FOURTH FRIGGIN' RECORD, and only reclaimed their former glory on occasion - think Minstrel in the Gallery, Heavy Horses and this one.
This isn't as good as the group's two best: Stand Up and Benefit. (I'm serious. I think those two are their best). And the whole thing bottoms out on tracks like the ten-minute Budapest: I know Anderson regards it as their masterpiece, but it's snooze-inducingly dull and uncomfortably reminiscent of Thick as a Brick at times. Same with the war protest Mountain Man - I've always liked war protests, but the Far East gimmicks are grating (compare to Fat Man off Stand Up, which nails the Far East Sound and is pretty funny to boot). And the record's drenched in those stupid '80s drums. You know, the ones that play a straight "one two THREE four one two THREE four..." beat with absolutely no rolls, eighth or sixteenth notes, or anything else to break the monotony, to the point where they sound like metronomes? Yeah, those. You'd think they were drum machines, and for all I know, they were. But the credits list a live drummer, albeit one who sounds annoyingly like a metronome. To top off the complaint list, Anderson's voice ain't half of what it used to be, so he won't be doing the cool singing he did on Locomotive Breath and such.
But when Crest's good, it's really good. I'm talkin' tracks like Steel Monkey, bolstered by Martin Barre (who still is so underrated it's shocking)'s guitar solo and a great "Can you guess my name/can you guess my trade?" refrain that stays in your head for ages; Farm on the Freeway, a nice little mellow environmentalist thing, classic Tull rocker-with-flute Jump Start, and especially the witty country-folk-rock Said She Was a Dancer, a Cold War espionage parody that works better than you'd think.
So even though this sounds like Dire Straits (a band I despise with every fiber of my being - okay, I exaggerate, but I still hate them) at times, and even though it isn't creative, it doesn't wallow in egotistical misery like Thick as a Brick or WarChild, and there's some good music here. So if you're a fan, you might as well give it a try.

I enjoy this album. I have almost the whole tull collection and this was a missing album in my set. This album fits into the Post-Broadsword world of Tull nicely.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

2 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2006-05-17

The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Dave has been around forever, but his work just does'nt get old. I had this on vinyl, but finally got the cd. No matter what you think of him he is in a class of his own. This might be his best studio guitar album, Paralyzed is great but the best work is on Talk to Me. This song is filled with awesome solos and fills that will give you the chills. I'm Missing You is a cool number that will have you singing all day. Gotta Be on My Way is a Dave Mason classic. Overall Dave is one of my favorite musicians and tastiest guitarists ever.

5 out of 5 stars Original Wailers.......2007-01-09

Simply my favorite sounds of all time. I was a regular at all the teen dances in the Pacific Northwest and the Wailers were the best and always sold out. When you walked down Greek Row at the UW the original Wailers album was always blaring out the windows of the fraternity houses.

5 out of 5 stars Original Golden Crest Masters.......2000-07-26

Wailers - Wailers - Everywhere! Mid to Late 1960's, growing up in Tacoma and Fircrst WA - The Tacoma Armory - Spanaway Lake Dance Hall - Evergreen Ballroom (long-live the Ballroom!) - The Spanish Castle! The Wailers were (and are!) THE MOST INFLUENTIAL GROUP EVER ON NORTHWEST ROCK! I went to Junior High, High School and College (yes COLLEGE!) with several of the band members and those were GOOD TIMES! Pre-New Age rock? They pre-dated them all! And they are STILL packing them in!

5 out of 5 stars Golden Crest Masters.......2000-02-15

As a native Tacoman, a Stadium High '65 graduate, and bassplayer who stood watcing John "Buck" Ormsbey for more hours than was probably good for me, I found the CD both nostalgic and a reminder of how badly The Wailers were treated by the local rock power-brokers located in Seattle during their hayday. The CD also reminds listeners that the fifth Wailer was John Greek playing a rythum guitar, the group having no bass at that point. Every northwest musican owes a debt to The Wailers for putting us on the music map once and for all.

5 out of 5 stars THEY STARTED THE SURF FIRST!!!!.......1998-10-01

This is a classic group...The music of The Wailers bring back instant memories of "Drag-Races" and "Hot Rods" and "Surfing"...This ACE cd is a classic. The liner notes tell the whole story of the group that began the beat before the BEACH BOYS and JAN & DEAN...Listen and you can detect where some of the later classics got their inspiration. This is a must buy!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail of Northwest Rock and Roll.......1998-07-06

There are probably four or five albums from the first wave of great Northwest rock & roll (1958 - 63) that are both must haves and highly collectible and "The Fabulous Wailers" is at the top of the list. This new import release is like manna from heaven - alternate takes, unissued tracks, and the complete first album - all taken from "newly discovered" masters that sound INCREDIBLE!!! Clean, no hiss, no compression, some of these tracks are even in true stereo for the first time in print!!! Hallelujah!!! My life is now complete (until they put out The Viceroys' "At Granny's Pad" on CD).

5 out of 5 stars Great Album, Right on to John S. Ryan's Review!!!.......2007-01-14

I really can't add anything to the words of the review I read here by John S. Ryan. He summed up my feelings (and a lot of other Tull fans and quality music lovers everywhere I'd imagine) by writing of the Grammy fiasco when Metallica was supposedly "robbed" of the Grammy by a deserving Jethro Tull. Thanks John for summing up the truth of this subject so eloquently.

5 out of 5 stars Second only to Aqualung.......2005-10-13

Crest of a Knave is a CD that put Jethro Tull back on the map after several substandard albums.
This CD is second only to Aqualung and could be considered a "Career album"
Martin Barre is back to playing the best lead guitar of his career and Anderson is playing his flute and acoustic guitar as well as he ever has also.
Steel Monkey is a heavy metal rocker with a very hard driving sound, all about Iron workers.
Farm on the Freeway is another solid song with a very lively flute.
She said she was a dancer is a nice acoustic piece and has a very lively guitar.
Budapest is another song on the album that is as good as any song Ian Anderson has ever done, either with Tull or solo.
No Jethro Tull collection is complete without this CD.
After all it was voted Heavy Metal CD of the year, a Prize Ian Anderson would probably like to forget............Enjoy

4 out of 5 stars Crest of a Knave.......2004-08-03

For a band that never seemed to hit its stride, this particular album stands out. There is a bit of a Cold War theme to many of the tracks and the others all have relavance. Other Tull recordings never seemed to get it together for an entire album, but Crest of a Knave hits the mark. Like just about every other Tull recording, this one received minimal air play but that cannot be an indictment of the quality. Ian Anderson seems to back off of his dictatorial leadership and let guitarist Martin Barre share the spotlight.

If anyone has never given Jethro Tull a serious look (or listen), this album might be among the best opportunities to get a flaavor of what the band is capable of. Tull fans have already rang in with their endorsements of this effort. There is a good flow to the songs and they compliment each other in their placement on the disc.

5 out of 5 stars Jethro Tull 80's gem.......2004-07-17

This is one of my favorite albums from the 80's.
Included on this disc is the singles 'Steel Monkey' and 'Farm on the Freeway'.
As always great musicianship and vocals by Ian Anderson and great guitar work by Martin Barre.
It is definitely a Tull album that's worth giving a listen to.
Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars A hint of Dire Straits.......2004-06-08

The best of the 80's Tull albuns. Can't be compared to the old classics of the 70's, but has some good songs. Budapest and Farm on a Freeway are two of these. They have a Dire Straits mood in the storytelling lyrics and in the voice - guitar interplay.

4 out of 5 stars Gathering lilacs and rarer flowers........2002-08-22

Justice is done to Welsh-born composer, pianist, actor and man of the theatre Ivor Novello in this Naxos CD. The artists who first performed them are heard in 18 items, recorded between 1917 and 1950. Ivor Novello himself is heard in two of them, providing some spoken repartee as he accompanies Edna Best at the piano. Most were recorded in the 1930s. The sound quality is good enough for the lyrics to be clearly heard. They bespeak a long-vanished era, but the music still has charm.

Film buffs can nowadays most easily see Ivor Novello in an Alfred Hitchcock film of 1926, "The Lodger". Actor Jeremy Northam portrayed him in the recent film, "Gosford Park". Ivor Novello starred in his last production, "King's Rhapsody", and died nine days before I saw it in London in March 1951.

5 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2007-03-28

Their previous album Letters of Fire was a great album, but this one is good as well. One thing I noticed they changed the music quite a lot. This album has heavier guitars and good bass. Once again Nell beautiful delicate vocals are in it. A good album to listen

3 out of 5 stars "I go for you when everyone else is gone.".......2006-07-03

And I listen to this CD when I want something on the softer side of Gothic. Most of my listening tends more toward power but every once in awhile it can get a little tiring and that is when Vain City Chronicles gets a spin. Because it is relatively easy going, it makes good background music, sometimes reminding me of 70's easy rock, especially when the singer uses her soft voice, which seems to be most of the time. There are occasions when she cranks it up a notch but not often enough for me to give her more than three stars. And the lyrics (example: "A blood-stained rubber duck, I really shouldn't swim these waters.") aren't something I can sing along with, which is another reason it makes good background music for me. But since I do listen to it occasionally, it meets my criteria for three marks. (Please see my profile for a brief discussion of my rating philosophy.)

5 out of 5 stars Exellent gothic-rock dark romance..........2006-03-09

The hard rocking goth style of this band had evolved since LETTERS FROM FIRE, the first album. Featuring an amazing voice (Nell) and a dark norwegian romantic songs mix with powerfull guitar riffs are exellent. A record to buy now. NOW!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The joy of Gene Harris.......2005-08-28

As I've grown in my appreciation of music, I've found that my interest in performers' techniques has faded. At the same time, my love of the performer's ability to impart a truly human experience has multiplied. As it happens, Live at Otter Creek shows Gene Harris to be a technician with major league chops who has a ball on stage, infecting all around him. Right from the start, his side men know it's a special night; the joy spreads to the audience, a joy they can hardly contain; the entire evening is so full of ebullience that I can't imagine anyone who hears this music controlling the urge to bounce up and down and break out in laughter-or tears

Let's take "Sweet Loraine" as an example. It's the opening number. Harris begins it in an easy lope, slowly turns up the heat, and builds the tension to the point that one is ready to bolt--then releases it with a large hearted, delighted laugh. He has us, and he knows it.

It's in "A Little Blues Here," a Harris original, that things really heat up. He blazes through eleven incendiary choruses, igniting some pretty hot stuff from John Heard on bass, and some very hot stuff from Jimmie Smith on drums. Throughout these last two solos, the audience can't keep quiet, and at the end, there is general bedlam. Me? I'm about to jump out of my chair.

By the way, as if to satisfy those who haven't been knocked out by his technique all night long, Harris tosses off "Cute" as an encore. It's a jaw-dropping tour-de-force, but it's still the passion that matters the most.

There's more, of course, and I wish I'd been there. That's what an album like this one does for me. It offers me the sense of an experience, all because of the exceptional and joyous talent of Gene Harris. I heard him a few months before his death, at Spivey Hall, just outside of Atlanta. He played with less vigor than in this album but with no less joy. He smiled continuously. After the show, he was very weak and remained seated as he greeted guests. Many of his fires were banked, but there was no putting them out--not that night, anyway.

5 out of 5 stars The Clincher.......2004-10-25

Truth be told, I'd always been slightly reserved in my estimate of Gene Harris (though with my musical acquaintances, his was frequently the first name to come up whenever the conversation turned to jazz piano). I certainly admired the "groove" of The Three Sounds and picked up 4-5 of their Prestige sides. But though it was infectious, accessible jazz, I considered it just short of the bar attained by Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, and Ahmad Jamal. And when Harris made his "comeback" in the '80's on Concord, his music engaged me but not to the degree of a piano "communicator" like Monty Alexander.

This particular recording is the one that removed all doubts, reservations, and qualifiers. I'm giving the album five stars, even though prospective purchasers need to be forewarned that the audio quality is a bit "distant," the resonance of the piano at times suspect, and there's a certain amount of "wow" in the sustained pitches. But the crowd ambience, the empathetic support of Heard and Smith and, above all, Harris' inspired performance steal the show. Harris plays with lots of funk, soul and power (listen to those building tremulos on "Sweet Lorraine") but still manages to be ceaselessly inventive in his single-note melodic lines. His reading of Monty Alexander's "signature" tune, "Battle Hymn," is every bit as fiery and exciting as the great Jamaican pianist's recorded versions. In fact, many of the moments on this session remind me of nothing less than Oscar's best live trio recordings.

I see that "Live at Otter Crest" is way, way down in sales among Gene Harris recordings. It would be a pity if other listeners take the guy for granted before coming across this gem.

4 out of 5 stars Gone But Not Forgotten.......2002-09-27

The blessing of cd's is that every once in a while some really special stuff emerges, long buried in a vault somewhere, perhaps not deemed fit for vinyl or tape. The curse, of course, is that companies are now able to resurrect some genuine drek and push it on an unsuspecting public--hungry for more Miles, more Coltrane, more Getz, etc.

Gene Harris' Live at Otter Crest is buried treasure. Somehow this artist never quite got his due, laboring in the shadows cast by McCoy Tyner, Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, even the wonderful Red Garland. But Gene Harris was (and is) the real deal. His robust playing is drenched in blues, gospel, some swing, and, of course, soul. You can hardly go wrong by dipping anywhere into Concord's catalogue of Harris' recordings.

But Otter Crest is something special. Harris languished for years in semi-retirement, and this cd catches him just before he
came back with a vengeance. These cuts are not timid babysteps back into jazz. No, Harris, along with Jimmie Smnith on drums and John Heard on bass, explodes back onto the scene. He's tender--but not mushy--on "My Foolish Heart," swinging on "Shiny Stockings," and rolls out the blues on "A Little Blues There."

Oh, and with his 11-plus minute treatment of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" Harris seems to have more than jazz on his mind. Yes, this cut swings, but this song carries its own subtext, and Harris and his audience seem more than aware of it.

Almost every time you see a picture of Harris--with The Three Sounds, with his trio with Ray Brown, or with any group that he fronted--the man seems to be smiling. And why not? Gene Harris had a great first act, a decade-long intermission, and then an exhilarating second act.

Miss him? Of course. But I can always picture that smile. And of the dozen or so recordings of his in my collection--well, every one makes me smile. And makes me grateful for the great man.

5 out of 5 stars GENE HARRIS - - - live with john heard, jimmy smith.......2001-09-04

Gene Harris is simply a master and if you love to here blues and hard-swinging jazz, then LIVE AT OTTER CREST is what you want. The way the live recording gives Gene, Jimmy, and John all potent energy in their playing will make you play this CD again and again. This is also a rare chance to hear Gene Harris imbetween his time with the three sounds and his comeback with ray brown. The bottom line is that any album with Gene Harris will make you swing.

5 out of 5 stars "this is a major event ~ finally released from 1981".......2001-05-04

Always glad to see something from the early '80s in the world of jazz ~ especially when its a group of highly talented musicians ~ Jimmie Smith (drums), John Heard (bass) and led by the man himself, Gene Harris at the piano. And a lot of piano he can play ~ topping the list is blues, followed by jazz, soul and blends of rocking gospel.

Being a big fan was delighted to see this CD come my way ~ originality and his own style of playing, even though his early heros were Fats Waller and Art Tatum, not bad company to be in.

A lot of credit goes to ~ Glen Barros & John Burk (executive producers) and to Concord Jazz for having the insight to go back in the archives for this one ~ and once again getting a big thrill in hearing this for the first time ~ another chapter from this great musician and wonderful human being ~ GENE HARRIS!

Also available on Concord Jazz from Gene Harris ~ "The Best Of The Concord Years-Gene Harris" (CCD2-4930-2) ~ "Alley Cats" (CCD-4859-2) ~ "In His Hands" (CCD-4785-2) ~ "It's Real Soul" (CCD-4692) ~ "Black and Blue" (CCD-4482) ~ "At Last" (CCD-4434) ~ "Listen Here" (CCD-4385), featuring jazz ~ just the way you like it.
