Killer B's tuned to A.......2007-04-04
Firstly the music. Based just on this there isn't a lot here to make this a mandatory purchase for your averagle metalhead. A few live numbers and a few covers of varying levels of interest. It would really be up to the individual to decide what ones they prefer. Apart from that this disc has a few Anthrax curiosities for the completist though they are mostly joke tunes.
Secondly the wider context. That is that this disc was billed as an EP despite clocking in at over 40 minutes. Many bands would call this an album. Anthrax have here put together a nifty little package aimed squarely at their fans. This was never intended to be treated as the next Anthrax album -as the liner notes state - and any fan of this band who approaches this release in the right frame of mind will be rewarded with an amusing and worthwhile package of curios. Pluse the liner notes are genuinely useful and interesting.
Three stars - an average of two stars for the music alone is worth and the four stars the idea and band behind this release deserve for this useful 'round up' of odds and sods from the vault.
For the newcomer, no way. For the fan, for sure, snap it.
Good Slapdash Set of Odds and Ends.......2006-11-22
Now, what about the material on the disc? Overall, its pretty good. "Milk (Ode To Billy)" is about a boy who wants milk for his cereal. It sounds like standard Anthrax song. Meshing the goofyness with the sonic aggression brings a smile to my face. The rest of the album proceeds in a similar tasteful fashion. For the most part...
The live tracks are okay, but they throw off the momentum of the studio tracks. And the re-make of "I'm the Man" blows.
But man, the rest of the material is quite good. Any fan of the band, or even just any sort of faster-than-average metal, should consider adding this to their collection at some point.

What happened here?.......2005-08-25
This album from anthrax just sucks. The songs Bring the noise and I'm the man 91 is lame. I'm the man 91 is a rap metal song that I guess is a sequel the I'm the man. It sounds like those limp biskit fags. And the songs with the highest quality are not even that decent. Oh yeah, bring the noise is another rap metal song that anthrax failed to do well. If you want rap metal from anthrax that's acually good, get I'm the man. It's awsome, funny, and the album includes a cover song from black sabbath. This time anthrax let me down.

After a four-year hiatus, on The Sneak Attack the T'cha comes out fighting, as usual. "Attendance" ticks off a list of KRS'S additions to his ongoing revisionist history lessons, before dropping this gem: "All these rappers swear they the best, I know what you're thinking about: 'Where's KRS?'" The blastmaster's ego is still breathtaking. It's this swagger that has always made KRS-One thoroughly hip-hop: his desire not merely to represent, but to embody the music. And if he's gonna get moralistic about what hip-hop kulture (don't forget the "K") really is on tracks like "Hot" and "Hip Hop Knowledge," at least he's spitting it in dope rhymes over dope beats. While younger cats speed along on crispy, digitally flipped beats, none of KRS-One's spare, stabbing beats would sound out of place in an early '90s mix. But, like the man says, what goes around comes around. On "The Mind," he rhymes, "You ain't gotta be a scholar to know the next four years gonna be ill." Fresh for 2001, you suckas. --Jeff ChangCustomer Reviews:

Like A Piss On The Streets I Exist.......2006-04-16
I loved this comeback album, the album really takes off for me starting with Why?
There are intricate flows on here (The Lessin, Why, What Kind of World Are We Livin In- "Churches are ran like corporations praising the dollar, corporations are ran like churches making me holler") and they have something to say.
I got Next was a bit too heavy on the "Emcee v.s. MC, real hiphop vs fake hiphop" tip for me, there are more important and interesting things to talk about than the world of hiphop, and on this album KRS ONE puts things in perspective.
Incredible album. Only a few skips.
Dope.......2005-04-22
"whose the first to flash the heat on the cover?" begins one of Kris's many manifesto or autobiographical tracks ("attendance") while "Hot" and "Hush" call out wack MCs and fake thugs. The crowing achievement is "Raptizm" a tight spiritual track.
I personally don't understand people who hate on KRS's newer albums. He's still doing the same thing he was back in 1988(which is not a bad thing), he drops knowledge, disses, and insight.
Half and Half.......2005-03-26
Beats are usually cool, I don't care for the popish tracks with the singing. I didn't mind it so much when he sang REALLY BAD back on his first album, but now it's no longer funny, it sounds like pop.
Anyhow, organized religion is crap. I thought KRS understood this back in the day. What happened? Now he's got his own little organization and his own little phylosophy, and his only little diciples and crap, I dunno, it's posative, but then again it's gay like some of his modern tracks.
Anyhow it is cheap, if you have to finish off your collection as I do, then buy it, otherwise go buy his anything BoomBap on back. Or check out:

Part dance album and part free-form experiment, When Analog Worms Attack is one of the more curious pieces of woofer-taxing techno to be heard. French artist-musician Quentin Dupieux, a.k.a. Mr. Oizo, proves emphatically that there's plenty of life left in deliciously free, bedroom-crafted expressions. Dupieux calls his sound "dirty house": subsonics are a rumbling ever-present, while the tunes themselves are like Paris on a rainy spring afternoon, lurking with crafty shadows and moments of wonderful high art. There are striplets of upbeat funk guitar laced throughout, but as the album strolls along, matters get significantly darker, the title track taking you into the shadier areas of the metro system before leaving you firmly entrenched in darkness with the fully developed "Analog Worms Sequel." Of course, Dupieux saves the most popular until last, with the European megahit "Flat Beat" (which sold more than 2 million copies in '99 after mass exposure through a Levi's commercial) tacked on as a bonus track some two minutes after the disc has ended. This CD is the aural version of a subversive, French art-house film. Add a good double espresso, some Gitanes plus a copy of L'Equipe, and it's a gloriously cheap vacation. --Steffan ChiraziAlbum Description

Analog synths and funky beats at their best!.......2003-11-08
After listening to the album all the way through, I immediately started it over and switched on 'repeat'. This is an album that I can hardly stop listening to. Its funky sounds and curious off-beat tempo adds an almost unsurpassable flavor to the songs.
Although this CD is incredibly amazing (to me) I had to give it a 4 out of 5 because of the repitition of sounds and beats. As much as I love it, anyone out there that isn't into this particular genre may find the repeating beats and sounds annoying about halfway through the album.
If you liked "Flat Beat" and particularly enjoy the electronica genre this album is a definite "must have".

Former A Tribe Called Quest MC Phife Dawg admirably takes a back-to-basics approach on his first solo foray, clearly reveling in his lone wolf status. "Should never have let me off the damn leash," he gleefully exclaims on "Flawless," a track which directs thinly veiled barbs at a certain vivrant former bandmate. However, a full-length tirade against former associates isn't on the agenda as Phife primarily voices his dissatisfaction with style-over-substance in hip-hop, and he isn't in the mood to bite his tongue. With Tribe's plush melodic compositions no longer cushioning his flow, the five-footer goes all out, dropping authoritative critiques on "Alphabet Soup" and "D.R.U.G.S.," both helmed by ascendant producer Hi-Tek. Aside from his usual marauding, canine inclinations ("Ben Dova"), Phife tries to infuse conceptual breadth through storytelling ventures with mixed results. Even though his ambitious lyrical attempts don't always work, his skills are matched and enlivened by supreme beat-layers such as Pete Rock ("Melody Adonis"), but when attached to underwhelming microphone assistance on posse cuts and bland production, things begin to falter. Fortunately, this is hardly the overwhelming scenario, and Phife's intact skills prove he's definitely not ready to be muzzled yet. --Del F. CowieAlbum Details

Legendary Solo Effort.......2006-01-30
Solid effort from a real MC.......2005-11-11
On the other hand, Phife made a mistake with some songs like "Ben Dova" or "The Club Hoppa" lyrically wise because he totally contradicts himself on these songs. I'm all with denouncing commercial/materialistic/dumb Hip Hop, but he comes himself with some of that sh*t right after saying that he's fed up with it. This type of contradiction had me scratching my head. But actually this may not come so much as a downfall after all since, like I said before, partying and having sex is a part of Phife's character which he couldn't express in a group like Tribe because he had to limit his lyrics' subjects and the clean and spiritual style of the group. So as long as we're talking about just one or two songs (every album has a weakness), there's really no problem with that.
The No Name feature on "4 Horsemen" was truly laughable but I can understand why Phife did it, they come from the same place, grew up together and Phife decided to let them shine a little on his solo album, I would've done the same with my homies so I can't be mad at him (by the way, Phife's verse is deadly on this song, real sharp).
Anyway, besides very few disappointments, MOST of the lyrics are ill, Phife has always been one of the best MCs in the game, easily one of the best ever, and this album is just another proof of the superiority of his talent, he handles words with a lot of ease, and even if some of the subjects are not as deep as we could have expected, the skills are definitely still there and show up on most tracks. Try to listen to today's rappers like 50 Cent & Co after listening to Ventilation, you'll see the difference, Phifey clearly rules.
And now, the beats. Great. Anybody who says that the beats were wack on this album must be crazy. They PERFECTLY fit Phife's style, they're raw, soulful, boom-bap style, and stick perfectly to the overall message and spirit of the album: Real Hip Hop still exists. Again, the beats evolved a little bit since his Tribe days but you can always trust a production team composed of Pete Rock, Hi-Tek and Jay Dee amongst others. Even "Ben Dova" or "Club Hoppa", if their lyrics can disappoint, the beats are dope, and never commercial or radio-friendly. REAL HIP HOP FROM START TO FINISH.
And I don't even mention songs like "Beats, Rhymes & Phife", a biography in which Diggy tells us how he fell in love with Hip Hop and how he made it to the top, the Pete Rock laced "Melody Adonis", an ode to the love of his life (beautiful, arguably the best song on the album) or even "Alphabet Soup", with Mutty Ranks dropping knowledge.
At the end of the day, Phife comes with more than a solo album, it's an individual album, where he revealed some aspects of his character we didn't necessarily know, while keeping it real with sharp and clever lyrics, dope beats and most importantly: LOVE. Go cop it!
Predictable, Disappointing, and Boring (2.5 Stars).......2004-09-15
1) Butter - (from "The Low End Theory" LP '91)
2) 8 Million Stories - (from the "Midnight Marauders" LP '93)
3) Baby Phife's Return - (from the "Beats Rhymes & Life" LP '96)
4) His Name Is Muddy Ranks - (from "The Love Movement" LP '98)
These songs are all tight, and it could be argued that "8 Million Stories" and "Butter" are classic joints. With that being said, "Ventalation: Da LP" is a subpar release from a dope MC. There are so many reasons for the LP being a faliure.
Like other reviewers have pointed out, the first thing to stand out is the overuse of curse words. In my mind, cursing takes away from skills because anyone can make a curse word rhyme. It takes more skill to rhyme without cursing and I think that's one of the things that made ATCQ so appealing. Don't get me wrong, Tribe did curse from time to time, but Phife curses so much that I had to check the credits to make sure Richard Pryor didn't write the lyrics.
Another reason the CD is boring is because Phife hasn't improved lyrically. These are the same rhymes that you'll hear on any ATCQ LP...but with more swearing. That lack of improvement (or decline in skills depending on your view) makes at least 70% of this CD skippable.
Another reason to come to mind is the suspect production and the number of wack joints on the album. Supa Dav West needs to stick to singing because his production is suspect. I was even more shocked to hear such subpar production from Pete Rock on "Lemme Find Out". I'd have to say that "Ben Dova", "Miscellaneous" and "Lemme Find Out" are straight wack. "4 Horseman (192 N' It)" has a tight beat (courtesy of Jay Dee), but Phife and the aptly named trio No Name totally wasted it with some of the wackest lyrics I've heard since Vanilla Ice. Even the hook sucks: "This I'm holdin' down for Linden Bully like what / runnin' through life and not givin' a f*ck / gotta get your paper / nevermind these sluts / they ain't goin' nowhere / we can always get butt". It gets no sadder than that.
There are some good tracks on this album though. "Alphabet Soup" and "Flawless" are good, but they come off as skippable. "Tha Club Hoppa" reminds me of the ATCQ Phife that handled business on the previously mentioned solo joints. And then there are certified bangers like "D.R.U.G.S." (produced by Hi Tek) and "Melody Adonis" where Pete Rock redeems himself with a tight beat and Phife actually uses it well.
Overall, I'd have to say that this CD is somewhat dissappointing. The beats were suspect and Phife might've lost a step or two on the mic. If you're an ATCQ fan that was expecting more of the same on his solo joint, then you'll get most of the lyrics you're looking for, but most of the beats won't do anything for you. I'd only reccomend this to collectors that have everything else associated with Native Tongue / ATCQ.
Standout Tracks: Alphabet Soup, Flawless, Ventilation, Tha Club Hoppa, and D.R.U.G.S. (My Favorite)

Talk About Sinking As Low As All Those Immature Boys, Hah?.......2007-03-15
As far as for the album itself, I choose not to give it a single star because the music is really very fun and perhaps even a bit of tongue 'n' cheek as well(of course it would never be considerd as such if it were coming from a male performer but I digress). This is basically just an album of enjoyable and very immature pop candy. Perhaps fun for a listen or two, but defiantely not something you would want to hear in your ear constantly unless you have the same kind of mentality as this album presents itself as having. All in all, a fun and dumb little pop album to 'enjoy'.

Any woman as fugly-faced as Gillette with those "ity bity tiny t*tties" (love that line man!) *SHOULD SHUT UP* and not bring more attention to her girly little pathetic frailties and the fact that she was apparently presenting herself as a female dog in heat to guys who then treated her as nothing more and for whom she them gets upset for them being the dogs they were.
There are no really cool beats; at best all you can say is they are "catchy," like a a stupid commerical tune you can't quite readily get out of your head after hearing it, like that damn P.C. Richards tunes. But don't confuse "catchy" with talent. She's a dumb hack man and where is she now? Yeah, thought so.
And take a look today at the stuff rap is making now; its like ten times more vulgar and now playing on the radio. Emenem is singing about backing it up and getting down on all fours and guess what, on the dance floor the stupid hos are doing it!
I think Gillete singing about tiny little ding-dings and warning guys not to touch her is just an attempt to flatter herself and a classic defensive strategy to assuage the painful reality that those with a real manhood would not touch her with a proverbial ten-foot long pole. Seriously, she looks so nasty, like she could be the poster girl for Valtrex with the caption: "I was an STD victim of the 90's club scene but it's not holding me and my aging vagina and ity bity tiny t*tties back today" or "Being fugly with an STD doesn't stop me from thinking I'm still gonna me some.. Valtrex: Just in Case You Do Get Lucky, You Don't Want Them To Really Know"
Great 90s Album!.......2005-12-04
a retaliation of sorts against the misogynic attitude of contemporary music -- most notably rap songs, which often degrade women. Though she knows her music will offend some, Gillette says the time is right for her type of message. "Men have been dogging out women like this for a long time, and they expect us just to take it," she says. The songs are really catchy and the lyrics are funny!! Don't listen to the reviewers below, they are just little little scared men, who got a bit defensive

JEAN GRAE IS A REAL MC, AND I ENPHASISE REAL.......2005-11-03
Straight from brooklyn this girl carries an essence about her which is both refreshing and old school at the same time. I first heard of jean when I read the review of this album in the source magazine a few years ago and at the time I tried looking for this album but had no luck I could not find it anywhere and eventually gave up on it, still I never forgot about it, I started hearing her on other albums and I could not believe that I was hearing a female mc with so much talent yet she recieves barely any recognition. So I started the search recently again and I was able to find a copy on amazon for a very cheap price and after hearing this lp I was not dissapointed.
The production on this lp is solid containing a nice new york feel, it has a similar vibe to Masta Ace's A Long Hot Summer album using a soft yet hard tone at the same time, basicly the type of beats I expect to hear from a place like brooklyn.
On the rhyming tip expect less lil kim think more along the lines of Lauren Hill, yet Jean in my opinion is better, she brings a realness to her rhymes which just screams authentic, there is nothing corny about her.
Overall this is an excellent lp yet I feel the best is yet to come so I will deffinatly be checking her future releases and I suggest you do too.
Yes, it's long, but please read this review!.......2005-09-04
If you know thing one about Jean Grae, you know she can rap. She can write, rap, produce, she can do practically anything. Seeing as she learned to read at age three, Jean's relationship with language goes back a long way, but even more than that, it's her intelligence that truly makes her music what it is. Listening to her music isn't like listening to rap. Not a single line in this album is compromised for the sake of hitting the right rhyme, or emphasizing the right beat. She doesn't seem to have to even think about it. She weaves comprehensive stories that might as well have jumped out of five-star novels, and puts them to catchy, blissfully melodic loops. The result is absolutely amazing. So if I say one important thing in this review, here it is: W-O-W.
Buy this album. Yes, in the tiny little pixilated picture you can barely make out online, the cover of this album looks extremely bootlegged, (oh what irony,) but in person, it's actually a pretty cool album cover, and the cartoon layout on the back is artistic and creative. Props to Jean for working so well with a low budget. But enough about the cover-art. If you make one mistake, ONE MISTAKE with this album, it would be not buying it because you think it looks unprofessional, or some other rubbish. Don't do that. The music on this album is absolutely incredible, and while Jean's release "This Week" champions the top of her discography list as the best, I have to say, "Attack of the Attacking Things" is a near miss, and even though "This Week" may, overall, be a better album, this record has a few very strong features that her other releases simply lack. Such as...
Jean's softer side. Yes, I said it, Jean has a soft side. Everyone knows it, all you have to hear is "P.S." on "This Week" to know it, but "Attack of the Attacking Things," I believe, is EASILY Jean's most introspective, emotional, and downright moving work yet. Track 8 - "Love Song" is one of the most incredibly moving songs I've ever heard. Over a beautifully haunting, melodic track, Jean weaves a story in third person about a young, naïve girl who is constantly taken advantage of by predator men. Then, slowly, towards the end, after mixing "I's" and "Her's" throughout the song, Jean drops the pretense and admits the story is all true, and all about her. "Maybe it's easier to talk about this stuff in third person," she says as she closes out the track with her last verse, and the listener can't help but feel close to Jean.
Aside from poignant, emotional tracks, Jean also proves she isn't afraid to say what she means, point blank, and does her best to try and inspire change in the black community, or society period. This is something not seen on her other albums. It's not that Jean isn't conscience on her other albums, she is, but she's never said it so straightforward, and I love it. I hope to hear more tracks like this from her in the future. The track is called "Block Party," a deceptive title, and as the opening line, she says "I don't want to preach or come off bitter, this is a commentary, auditory, editorial, about the state of things, state of mind and state of being." From there, she goes on to make some of the most absolutely intelligent, unsaid and covered up truths and observations I've ever heard, begging for change. "You need to get out your house, get off your block, go see something, go change something." To her fellow women, Jean says "Ladies, know your worth, the way we're giving it up, we might as well auction ourselves on ebay, to the lowest bidder, so what if his dough is better? Money doesn't make the man, maybe self sufficiency would better make you understand."
One last thing that must be said, briefly, for this album, is the outstanding production. I have to say, "Attack" has some of the most beautifully melodic loops - EVER. From jazz, to rock, to R&B, to your hard-hitting rap baselines. Not only that, but every loop fits the mood, such as track 7, "Thank Ya." This has an addictive, jazz/rock loop behind it, over which Jean uses her biting sense of humor. "It's scary, like women that ain't really women, to dudes that try to holla at them, wait, that was confusing."
SUMMARY
For those of you who know Jean, and for those of you who don't, BUY THIS ALBUM. For ages now, going on five years, I have confidently proclaimed Talib Kweli as my all time favorite rapper, but finally, Jean may have usurped him from that position and taken his place. Well, they're neck-in-neck, at the very least. One thing must be said for Jean - she is the ONLY rap artist, the ONLY musical artist period who consistently puts out albums which I can listen to straight-through without having to skip a track. Yup. Jean Grae has yet to put out A SINGLE SONG I don't like. That's dumb-founding to me. Ultimately, what makes Jean so great, is her talent for words, and her sense of humor. Please hear me on this; Jean is beautifully human. It's easy to idolize a rapper like Talib Kweli who focuses so relentlessly on conscience rap, and I absolutely love him for that, but there's something about Jean Grae's candid emotion and honesty, her talent for using sardonic wit to point out painful truths, and her movingly personal narratives that make it easy to love Jean Grae as a person trying to make a difference, and view her as a human, and not just idolize her as a symbol.
To Jean: Don't ever stop. All the turmoil you've gone through, everything you've fought for has been worth it, because whether you realize it or not, you DO effect people, and without a doubt, inspire (at least me) to do everything I can to make a difference, not as a symbol, not with money, not with influence, but as a human, who can connect with others on a deeper level.
