When XTC stopped touring and became a studio-only entity, the finely jeweled arrangements that Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding had already favored took on incredible new breadth and depth. Since 2002, Partridge has been going through his own vast archives, releasing eight volumes in a U.K.-only series called Fuzzy Warbles. They are finally available in the U.S. in one gorgeously designed Collector's Album, along with a bonus disc, Hinges. With over 100 songs, the set includes early versions and demos of songs which appeared on XTC albums, previously unreleased gems, and songs for a wide range of outside projects, including the Disney movie James and the Giant Peach (which are so dazzling it boggles the mind that the deal ultimately fell apart). There are whims borne to fruition (an answering machine ditty), and flat-out brilliant slices of songcraft finally brought to light. What's truly remarkable is how complete are Partridge's sensibilities, as both a songwriter and arranger. Everything is considered and tended to--a background vocal here, a tambourine there--it all matters and it all sparkles. --David Greenberger

Album Description

The Fuzzy Warbles Collectors Album brings together over 100 songs from XTC frontman Andy Partridge's songwriting archive. Recorded over the years whilst Andy and XTC were signed to Virgin Records and later to the Idea and Ape labels, the material is spread across eight volumes featuring songs and alternate versions of many XTC favorites that never made it onto the respective final albums or never made the cut when the final tracklistings were decided. There are also songs Andy never got to complete that he's re-visited and finished off especially for this Fuzzy Warbles series.

Each disc has a unique Fuzzy Warbles stamp cover artwork and the collector's box to keep them all in is designed to imitate a stamp album. There is even a bonus CD, Hinges, which features nine extra tracks only available with this set. Inside each box is a landscape oversized booklet, in which Andy gives a fascinating insight to his recording process with "A Brief History of Home Taping." Describing his earliest experiences of recording music at home and the excitement of those first recording sessions, it all makes fascinating reading, tinged with just a hint of regret as to how the songwriting process has become so bland as recording technology makes things easier and easier.

The final piece of the Fuzzy Warbles Collectors Album jigsaw is your own sheet of Fuzzy Warbles stamps to play with, if anyone could ever dare to part with them!

5 out of 5 stars Has the Fat Lady sung for XTC?.......2007-03-13

If so, this is a great way to go out. 150+ songs that demonstrate what an extraordinary talent Andy Partridge is. Some are full songs, others little unfinished scribbles, but underneath it all there is some great melodies, a hallmark of the XTC ouevre. Don't miss this collection!

I'll still always be hoping for another XTC album.

5 out of 5 stars What a Deal!.......2007-03-01

Pretty amazing box set of demos and outtakes from Andy Partridge and XTC. You've got 8 (9 including the Hinges) CDs, a sticker set, and accompanying booklet, all housed in a great box that looks like a giant book. Pretty good deal for the money, particularly if you're a diehard XTC fan. Highlights include the songs Partridge developed for a proposed soundtrack for James and the Giant Peach. Too bad that fell through, due to legal wrangling with Disney. Who better to record the soundtrack for a quirky animated film based on a quirky British children's book than the quirky Mr. Partridge? Disney went with Randy Newman instead and nothing against him, but they really dropped the ball on this one, big-time.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Collection.......2007-01-09

I had already purchased the initial 6 CDs that make up this box set over the past 3 years. I thought, well I only need volumes 7 and 8 and I will have a complete set. When I saw the box set package, with the booklet, box and bonus CD and the price, which was only a bit more than the last 2 CDs would have cost, I got it.

The packaging is great and the music runs the gamut from wonderful stuff you will want to hear again and again to noodling that is interesting but not something you would want on continuous play. Anyone who is an XTC fan will love this collection.

5 out of 5 stars If you are an Andy Partridge Freak, you won't be disappointed.......2007-01-03

I understand Andy has been putting out the Fuzzy Warbles discs in pairs for about 5 years, now. Last year I downloaded FW #1, and was pleased with most of what I heard, but something was missing. I am a nut (fruit nut) when it comes to liner notes, I have been like that since I started buying records in my teens--classical, jazz, rock, whatever it may be. I guess that's what is the drawback to downloading music, one misses the info. When I saw the entire collection was available, I jumped on it and found what I was missing; Andy's wonderful, sometimes weird insights on all these songs. Example from FW #1- Who knew the song "Wonder Annual" was about female masterbation? Certainly not from the bare-naked, seemingly antiseptic disc I downloaded. But every song has a story behind it, and Andy has been so gracious to share them with us. I also like hearing the early demos to see how they developed over time. This collection is reasonably priced and very much worth it!

4 out of 5 stars Andy's XTC outlet mall of songs--buy now and save!.......2006-11-22

As the primary songwriter for XTC since the mid-70's, Andy Partridge has been honing his craft for well over half his life. Around the time XTC ceased touring (1982), Andy began to spend more time capturing his songwriting efforts on home equipment. As time went on, these home demos exhibited ever-increasing sophistication and sound quality. Andy was always prolific enough with his writing that he submitted more demos for songs than XTC could use for their albums and B-sides. He always had plenty of tunes available for one-off singles, other artists, fan club cassettes, and so forth--and still left a treasure trove that was hidden from public consumption. This trend continued throughout the band's Virgin records phase and beyond; Andy kept self-recording his various ideas, songs and experiments during their "strike" against Virgin records (a 7+ year lull in newly recorded XTC output ensued from about 1992 to 1999.)

Once a settlement/agreement with Virgin was reached in the late 90's, the results were:
a) XTC were free to record/release stuff on another label, so they released two new discs "Apple Venus Volume 1" and "Wasp Star (Apple Venus Volume 2)" within about six months of each other, plus they followed these with accompanying discs of the same songs in demo form entitled "Homegrown" and "Homespun" (and, in a bit of overkill, they even released instrumental versions of the studio songs entitled "Instruvenus" and "Waspstrumental".)
b) Virgin got XTC 's full cooperation and participation in a 2002 4 CD box set entitled "Coat of Many Cupboards" that included many previously unreleased or hard-to-find demo songs as well as hits, album cuts, live songs, alternate mixes or versions, and so forth.
c) Andy got the right to release any demos otherwise unreleased by Virgin that were recorded at any time in XTC's past, present and future. He couldn't talk the other half of XTC, Colin Moulding, into joining in on this demo-release idea (despite Colin having contributed demos on B-sides, in the box set and on "Homespun" and "Homegrown"), so the name on these discs is Andy's, not XTC's.

Andy determined early on that he had 8 discs worth of stuff he could share, so he decided to release a pair of CD's every one to two years, starting in 2002 with Fuzzy Warbles 1 and 2 ("Fuzzy Warbles" being a term that was "borrowed" from the creative language utilized in Anthony Burgess' novel "A Clockwork Orange" -it was a term used by the main character in a derogatory way to describe either bad music or poor reproduction of music). Andy avoided a chronological order to the material, deciding to spread out known/unknown songs, old/new demos, instrumental noodlings and ridiculous ramblings, songs supposedly from other bands (such fictional/alter ego acts as The Golden, The Dukes of Stratosphear and Choc Cigar Champion are represented), even Disney movie song submissions, and so forth seemingly at random over each disc with no one disc containing too many songs in any one category. By the time 2006 rolled around and the last two Warbles (7 & 8) were due, Andy came up with the idea of releasing all 8 Fuzzy Warbles disc in a handy case with some bonuses: a 9th disc containing some more demos not otherwise released (it's shorter than any full "Warbles" disc) called "Hinges", some stamps, and an essay Andy wrote tracing his history of home recording.

At present, the Amazon price for this collection is amazingly low--it comes out to less than $8 bucks a disc--way less expensive than the separate "per disc" price on Amazon or elsewhere. A bargain, but only if you actually listen to/enjoy this. So, who is this set for?

It helps greatly to be an XTC fan, but it may not be required...an ear for finely crafted songs is necessary, however. A good half or so of the songs presented are demo versions of songs on XTC albums or B-sides from the 80's or 90's. The demos from 1983-1986 or so are much more primitive and lo-fi than the more polished ones Andy began producing after some late 80's equipment upgrades. Anything from the 90's and beyond sounds essentially the same as studio quality. The demos are not always radically different than what ended up on the albums, especially the more recent ones where Andy seems to have used the demo to strictly dictate the structure ( known as "chasing the demo") once they got to the studio. Also sometimes mildly interesting are the various sound experiments or instrumental pieces scattered throughout--although a share of these are also tedious and seem to be filler. Any of the several songs using some variation of the initials MOOG is usually in this category. None of these things are the main selling point of this set for most fans.

The real treasures here are the many songs Andy wrote that never properly saw the light of day as XTC songs. It's amazing how many gems are located on every disc that count as killer material, and often would have spiced up or improved previous XTC releases. Sometimes certain rejected demos were not quite up to the standard of the accompanying XTC release, but there are way more gems than clunkers among the "new" songs. Titles like " Bumpercars", "Wonder Annual", "Sonic Boom", "End Of The Pier", even "All I Dream Of Is A Friend" (a "James and the Giant Peach" song that never was thanks to broken negotiations with Disney) and many, many more are awesome songs that deserved way better than their second-class status.

Some of the 8 Warbles discs flow together and/or have more high grade material than others, but it's remarkable that Andy could sequence over 8 hours (and twenty years' worth) of self-made, self-produced music that is, for the most part, entertaining, high-spirited, highly creative and often just plain fun. It's hard to hear all of this and not think of him as being a truly gifted musician and songwriter, as well as a goofy oddball with a delightfully sick sense of humor. (Who else but Andy would start Warbles 6 with around five minutes of the sound of him cracking up repeatedly, to the point of tears, in the studio while working on the vocals for "Omnibus" on the Nonsuch album?)

This set comes highly recommended to any fan of XTC that wants an multi-disc, alternate, behind-the-scenes view of the great gobs of music that have been conjured up over the years in the house and shed of Swindon's own Andy Partridge. Given the uncertain future of XTC, this is your best bet to get material that is XTC in all but the name for quite a while. Buy and savor this set for years to come.

1 out of 5 stars Get the Rhino double-CDs while you can.......2007-05-26

It's true that these latest re-re-[re-, etc.]issues are not being forced upon anyone who already owns other copies of the albums. But for those of us who don't, it's frustrating that the most widely available editions of Costello's albums are now inferior to the previously released ones, which will no doubt become pricey and more difficult to seek out once they're out-of-print and the last lingering copies have been bought up. I've liked EC's music for a long time, but since he's an artist whose work can be heard in popular media, and since I own much of his music in one form or another, I've never felt compelled to go out and buy his albums, title by title, as they've been reissued. Now I feel obligated to buy the Rhino reissues while they're still available.

So, yes, it does suck that there's no incentive to buy these Universal re-releases other than the fact that they're what's in-print. The sound quality is nothing new, and there are none of the incredible bonus tracks that made the Rhino reissues so great. Maybe someday Universal will reissue them *again* with a track or two added to what was released by Ryko and Rhino, so they can shake as many pennies from fans' pockets as possible.

Until then, I'm getting the Rhino CDs while I can, and I recommend them to new fans or others who are buying the albums for the first time.

1 out of 5 stars No-one in their right mind would buy this........2007-05-20

Up until now, the repeated re-reissuing of EC's brilliant catalogue has been a delight and a thrill, with pleanty of new material added to the Ryko reissue, and then staggering amounts of it in the Rhino releases. But who in their right mind would buy any of these new reissues? How moronic does Hip-O think Elvis's fans are? I don't even buy the line that they are suitable for new EC fans. All fans, new and old, should own the Rhino reissues. This set doesn't even cover the Warners albums. I'm a long time, tragic EC fan, but he should be ashamed to sanction this latest reissue program, at least so far. The plans for later release of new material, and a deluxe MIAT look much more worthwhile.

1 out of 5 stars Elvis should have followed his own advice.......2007-05-19

When Elvis burst on the scene in 1977, he told an interviewer that he was going to quit after three LPs and that artists go on too long in their careers.

Amen, Elvis! Now why didn't you follow your own advice? You'd have been a classic and never have inflicted on the world "Punch the Clock" and the Brodsky Quartet recording of the Juliet Letters. Has any artist EVER suffered such an artistic decline? Well, yes, probably, but you'd have to think hard to come up with one.

As others have pointed out, this is a pointless re-re-re-re-compilation. Apparently it's for really busy people. You know, the ones who can't take the time to click the ORDER button several times for individual purchases. If there really are people like that purchasing this, I predict they won't make it through listening to the whole set. Again, they're too busy.

5 out of 5 stars DON'T DO IT!.......2007-05-19

All of us audiophile/EC fans are fighting hard to resist these digipaks. It's comforting to know that so many owners of the Rhino 2-disc reissues feel the way I do about this new set - absolutely unnecessary. Put 'em out in SACD format and maybe I'll buy the catalog again.

2 out of 5 stars It's About Time These Have Been Re-Issued!.......2007-05-09

There seems to be a bit of a tug-o-war between fans who have bought the originals, re-issues and re-re-issues and those who mark the re-re-re-issue as something noteworthy. I fall into the former category and find that it makes sense (from Costello's accountants' point of view) and doesn't make sense (from the point of view of any consumer who already owns three copies of "Tokyo Storm Warning"). Personally, I'll wait until the Starbucks re-re-re-re-issue in 2010.

Incredible value for a box set. Although it isn't *everything* that Beethoven recorded, it does contain the majority of his works.

    Good points-
    1) It's by Beethoven, one of the greatest composers of all time. And there's 50 CDs. Obvious? Yeah, but it's worth mentioning again :D

    2) Some very pleasant surprises in some of the more obscure works. If you've only heard the intro to the 5th Symphony and Moonlight Sonata would you have guessed that Beethoven did works for Mandolin and harpsichord, or variations on Scottish folk tunes?

    Bad points-

1)Very spartan packaging. All you get is the box, CDs in papaer sleeves and a small booklet listing the tracks. No biography, commentary or pictures. Certainly not a "deluxe" edition.

    2) Piano Concertos 1 & 2 are in mono, and the viloin sonatas are in poor stereo that sounds like mono.

3)Some of the slower movements in the piano sonatas sound too hurried.

In summary this box set represents a huge gold mine of great music for music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Aire Collector's Box Set Vol 1 through 8.......2007-01-10

I had been trying to collect all 8 CD's one at a time, but never could find all of them.....so I gave up and just ordered the eight all together in a wonderful wooden box. I don't know why I didn't do it to begin with. If you like Manheim Steamroller you will love having all 8 CD's to play at one time. Or record them to one CD in the Mp3 format. Seems like it would not be Christmas without listening to Mannheim Steamroller Fresh Aire, or their Christmas CD's....either way you can't go wrong.....

4 out of 5 stars The best box ever.......2004-01-30

You have to love this set. You just put it in the driveway, pour some lighter fluid on it, drop the match and watch it burn baby burn!

Man, if only all music this agonizing came in these wooden boxes. They real make immolating the thing a pleasure. Much better than those fast burning cardboard boxes.

5 out of 5 stars Chip Davis and Mannheim Steamroller: A Dream Work.......2003-04-01

The beautiful sound of the recorder or piccolo in the morning, with birds chirping. That is the sound you hear throughout the boxed set of Fresh Aire 1-8. This constant mood of relaxation with a kick of rock is a true hit. I urge you to purchase this item. It is worth it.----KWZ

5 out of 5 stars Great Music for Exercise.......2002-10-13

Excellent collection of Mannheim Steamroller selections. Of particular note is Vol 8. This music has a beat that makes it outstanding for either casual listening or to accompany a serious aerobic exercise. I walk for 1.5 hours daily and this is my most recent choice for brisk walking.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Collection for ANYONE.......2001-01-24

I already had a copy of each of the Fresh Aire CDs, from 1 through 8. When I heard about this, I decided that it would be a great buy. American Gramaphone, the record label created for Mannheim Steamroller, stopped production of the original Fresh Aire CDs to re-master them, so I knew that these CDs would sound better. However, I did not know that they were re-mastered in HDCD, which is another bonus.

Once again, we have an intense sound that should appeal to anyone. If you're unsure about this, the Mannheim Steamroller "20 Year Celebration" would be a good way to start listening to Mannheim Steamroller. Also be sure to pick up one of the christmas CDs. And check out the concerts. Many of the songs on the Fresh Aire CDs have video scenes that are displayed during the concerts, so the musical experience is enhanced. Although Fresh Aire 8

This also makes a good gift for anyone, including yourself. The wooden box in which the CDs are contained gives the entire set a very nice feel. It takes some work to get into, as the box is shrink-wrapped, and each of the CDs are in their original packaging. The only problem that I found was the UPC label on the bottom of the box. Other than that, there were no noticeable problems.

Once again, this is a good purchase for anyone who has the entire Fresh Aire series, or has only listened to some songs by Mannheim Steamroller. It's well worth it.

4 out of 5 stars 14 years down the drain!.......2006-02-01

This was one of the earliest collections of rare Elvis material ever released. It features 50 (mostly) unreleased tracks from the 1960s. The set is broken up into three discs: Hollywood, Nashville and Live in Las Vegas. People often criticize the Hollywood (soundtrack) material from the '60s, and rightly so, but the songs here are well chosen and entertaining. They are alternate takes which are sometimes better than the takes that actually got used way back when. A lot of good material was recorded in Nashville in the '60s, so it's no surprise that this collection of alternate takes is very good. The Live in Las Vegas disc features songs recorded in August of 1969 at the International. Very good material, including the infamous "laughing" version of "Are You Lonesome Tonight". This collection really is "gold" for Elvis collectors.

    5 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Stars: Lots of Rarities.......2005-03-25

With 47 previously unreleased performances this really is essential Elvis Presley from beginning to end. The only live version of 'Rubberneckin' is here, along with other gems such as 'This Is The Story,' 'Inherit The Wind' & 'Reconsider Baby.' The hard-to-find 'Are You Lonesome Tonight (laughing version)' is also here and sounds great within the context of such a dynamite live show. Elvis even sings "Happy Birthday" to James Burton. - shopelvis australia
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________

'Collector's Gold' was the first time that Ernst & Co had scoured the Elvis vaults to compile a set of undiscovered gems for a mainstream release.

All the CDs were themed (which is why 'Elvis : Close Up' works so well) and, after the few & far between outtakes we had been getting over the years, 'Collector's Gold' really was a treasure chest of Elvis goodies.

The 'Hollywood' CD stuns, from the first very different version of 'G.I Blues' to the rare 'How Can You Lose What You Never Had.' The longer 'movie' version of 'One Broken Heart For Sale' was released here for the first time and the Elvis solo version of 'Lonely Man' is astounding. The brilliant 'So Close Yet So Far' take 4, is still unavailable anywhere else, even on the new 'Harum Scarum' extended FTD.

The 'Nashville' CD is one of the best selections ever released, featuring eight "first takes" and showing Elvis at his 60's creative best. The dynamite blues of the unreleased take of 'Give Me The Right' is worth the price of admission alone but tracks like 'Like A Baby,' 'Memphis Tennessee' (Jungle 1963 version) & 'Love Letters' are also revelations. All these help demonstrate how Elvis was producing some astounding material while The Colonel pushed the lackluster movie soundtracks.

However it is the 'Las Vegas' 1969 CD that is the real stunner featuring a collection of fabulous rarities. The only live version of 'Rubberneckin'' is here, along with other gems such as 'This Is The Story,' 'Inherit The Wind' & 'Reconsider Baby.' Elvis introduces Del Shannon (who is in the audience) during his performance of Del's 'Runaway.' While 'TTWII' captured Elvis at his 'professional' best, this Las Vegas CD shows the power of Elvis, unleashed and ready to re-conquer the world!

Disappointingly, this set has been deleted by BMG. Grab it if you get a chance. - Daveyboy

4 out of 5 stars The Title Says It All.......2004-03-20

This is an essential 3 CD set for any serious Elvis collector.
For some reason, it seems to be out of print, but can of course can be found online. It contains rare outtakes from his movies and a great concert that features his famous "laughing version" of "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" that cracks me up every time and is actually one of my favorite Elvis moments. He does "Runaway" in his concert and then introduces Del Shannon in the audience. He does a lot of songs he never usually did live like "Mystery Train", "Rubberneckin", "Aint it Funny How Time Slips Away" and "Inherit the Wind". His duet with Ann Margaret "You're The Boss" was a famous deleted track from their "Viva Las Vegas" movie and can usually only be found on big expensive box sets. Needless to say, there is nothing here for the casual listener, this one is strictly for the hardcore Elvis completionist fan.

4 out of 5 stars Worth It For The Vegas Disk Alone.......2002-07-12

This now hard to find Presley collection is absolutely true to it's title. "Collector's Gold," is a goldmine of rare material for the serious Elvis collector. I can't say enough about Disc Three, which includes highlights from his 1969 run at the International Hotel in Vegas. Not only does it include the infamous laughing version of, "Are You Lonesome Tonight?," but also, cuts you simply would never find on another Vegas release (Rubber Neckin', Inherit The Wind, and This is the Story...I rest my case). Mix this disc with the original '69 Vegas release, and you've got one helluva comp. As far as the other two discs, they include alternate takes of Elvis' 60s material (Hollywood on Disc One and Nashville on Disc Two). The one complaint I do have about the set is that there's only an average of about 45 minutes on each disc. However, they weren't loading discs with 76 minutes of stuff back when this was released in 1991. Other than that minor quibble, I believe, "Collector's Gold," to be an exemplary set.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable for many reasons.......2000-12-07

I'm a huge fan of Elvis' music. I've got quite a collection of his stuff from the 50s through the 70s, and I can vouch for the quality of music throughout the period in which he recorded his music. Most comp CD's are a waste of time and money, but this one is quite an exception. The mark of a good CD or collection is the amount of use it gets over a long period of time, and for its diversity, it should get plenty of wear. The Hollywood CD will contain songs that you won't find on most other albums. Big Boots, Pocketful of Rainbows, a slower version of Girl Happy, Black Star, I Slipped, Stumbled and Fell...great songs from a variety of his movies. The booklet has a nice write up of each CD. The Nashville CD has some great songs as well..and some outtakes you'll enjoy. It gives you a fresh perspective of Elvis that's unfamiliar on a lot of his "Best Of" collections. Witchcraft, Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello, How Can you lose What You Never Had, the beautiful balad Love Letters, and many others make this CD and excellent collection. The Vegas CD has some interesting cuts...most notably, "Are You Lonesome Tonight", which has Elvis absolutely Losing It after lampooning one of the lines of the song. "Do you gaze at your bald head and wish you had hair" (Instead of "Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there"). I mean, he goes into hysterics...and when he tries to stop, it gets even worse. The background singers are still singing away, and Elvis is just cracking up...and when you listen to it, you'll be cracking up as well. I'm usually not much of a fan of the concert stuff, but this CD's pretty good...and again, Are You Lonesome Tonight makes the CD worth it.

Combined, the three CD set makes a great collection. It doesn't cover the 50's or the 70's, but it doesn't claim to. If you dig the King or know someone who does that doesn't have this collection, get it. It's a winner.

        3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2000-06-14

This is reissue of the first Broadway revival of "A Connecticut Yankee" starring Vivienne Segal and Vera-ellen (is her only major Broadway role). The cd is pretty good. Segal's performance is, as always, charming . I love "To keep My Love Alive" and i think that her performance is the best!. The CD also include addition songs by famous artist such ad Milton Berle and Bing Crosby, and a very rare song "The Bombardier Song " written for the army during the WW2
