Back Stabbers (1972) is the album that put both producing/songwriting team Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International label and journeyman trio the O'Jays on the map as major forces in '70s soul. Gamble/Huff's lushly funky tracks here proved the ideal backdrop for the group's shared lead vocals; singles like the acid "Back Stabbers" and "992 Arguments" gave free rein to a quality that would lead Wolfman Jack to describe the act as "dangerous." At the same time, "Love Train" offered a more utopian social vision, while ballads such as "Who Am I" and "Listen to the Clock on the Wall" pointed the way to the O'Jays's status as some of R&B's longest-running romantic figures. A key disc for lovers of the Philly sound. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars The album that put the O'Jays on the map........2007-02-22

This album is indispensable for several resons--and it's also a timeless masterpiece. "Back Stabbers" effectively and single-handedly put Philadelphia International Records on the map as a force to be reckoned with in the R&B market while making The O'Jays true superstars. The music on this CD remains as relevant (and as impressive) today as it was back in 1972. Indispensable!!!

5 out of 5 stars O-Jays forever!!.......2007-02-11

Just as timely today as in the early 70,s when I bought the vinyl album. Beautiful harmonies and lyrics set the tone.

5 out of 5 stars Very Best Album ever Made? One could make a Case..........2005-07-13

I first bought this Album back in the Spring of 1973, shortly after buying My first ever Record, The "45" Single "Love Train" which is included here. I will say, even at 11 Years Old, I had excellent Taste, this Album may be the best Recording EVER (Dorati's version of the Nutcracker is its only rival). So many emotions, great orchestration, powerful vocals, it's all here, every track is outstanding. Indeed, over the years I have grown to love the song "Who am I", that original flip side of "Love Train" more than "Love Train" itself..You must Buy this CD, absolutely and unwaveringly ESSENTIAL!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Superb production.......2005-03-12

This album is one of the three best releases of the O'Jays ("Ship Ahoy" and "Survival" being the other two), and belongs in the collection of any serious collector of '70s soul.

The production team of Gamble and Huff may not get the acclaim they deserve today, but they were one of the very best of the era, and "Back Stabbers" shows why. Too many producers use the studio merely to "sweeten" an artist's sound, removing any rough edges in the hope of producing something palatable to the general listener. The O'Jays and Gamble and Huff were not afraid of laying plenty of sounds on top of the band's gritty vocals, but the goal was always to make the sound more rich and interesting.

A good case in point is "992 Arguments," which spices excellent lead singing with soaring backup vocals, strings, lightly jazzy vibes and tasty guitar licks. As the song slowly moves out, the band's vocals slowly dissolve into the swirl of instrumentation. It's a beautifully crafted pop tune.

The O'Jays were masters of soul balladry, as "Listen to the Clock on the Wall" demonstrates. Again, the care taken in production is evidenced by the song's opening notes, when the bass slowly tolls a repetitive pattern -- the clock ticking on the wall. The chant-like opening chorus gives way to the heartfelt vocal -- like the best soul singing, the sentiments are simple, but the absolute conviction of the vocal elevates the tune far beyond mere sentiment.

And, of course, a few hits are thrown in, including the marvelously cynical title cut, the rock-influenced "For the Love of Money," and the bright "Love Train."

If the album contains any missteps in the vocals or the productions that encase them, they are hard to find. Far from dated, "Back Stabbers" shows that the soul masters of the '70s created music that has easily endured the test of time.

5 out of 5 stars Neglected masterpiece.......2004-10-18

This album has been blowing me away for over a quarter of a century now. The O'Jays expand on the early 70s paranoia that found its way into much of the soul music of the era. The album is perfectly programed. From the opening When The Worlds at Peace. To one of saddest, powerful and emotion break up songs ever, Who Am I. I bought this album for the two singles Love Train and Back Stabbers. Not in my wildest dreams did I know they would bury such wonderful gems as Shady Shiftless Jealous Kind of People and 922 Arguments into this soul classic.
