5 out of 5 stars Amazing vibes.......2007-07-30

Well if you don't like this album you have cement shoes on and tons of ice water in your veins. The music is so sweet and well shaun is so shaun it's scary. Get off your lazy buttocks and get up and live. One of the best albums if not the best album of 2007 hands down. First night i had this album i was drunk walking slash skating and was given a ride home by the cops free of charge saving me a half hour stumble home. This album is magic.

5 out of 5 stars Ryder at his best!.......2007-07-29

Let me begin by saying that I am a life-long fan of the Mondays... I purchased Squirrel + G man the week it was available back in 1980 something. I have owned all of their commercial releases... These days, I mostly listen to pills + Thrills, Squirrel and G man and ocassionally the Black Grape stuff...

I love Uncle Dysfunkional. They've taken it to a new level. An even better level... which rarely happens with a "come back" group like the Mondays who had been progressively more boring and mediocre since Pills + Thrills... I thought that they were pretty much done... and then suddenly they come out with Uncle...

This is Ryder at his best. He is cocky, brilliant, crass and garbles his lyrics as good as always... The energy on this album is infectious... the grooves and beats are some of their most memorable...

The style of the music on Uncle is well within the canon of their catalogue... they are not attempting anything new or cheesey... they are playing their music the way that they always have... as far as I am concerned, the style of the music on this album could have easily fit into 1992 -

I think this is a monumental release... I believe that you need to look over to our friends in England and see what they are saying...

This is Ryder at his best...
If you don't like this album - then I would say that your probably would have never liked any of their albums... and face it - many people - never got into this genre in the first place... they never liked Ryder's rough and wasted lyrical style... they never reconciled the competition between the groove and the rock in their music...
Well, I love this album... and I already know that it will not be stripped of it's jewel case and filed in a cold dark cd binder... it will not be auctioned on a website...
No, Uncle will stay on top of my pile for a very long time... amongst the rubies and cherries... considered and remembered for a long time.

1 out of 5 stars It Blows!!!!!.......2007-07-29

Dont pay 22$, wait till its in the bargain bin, at your local repo cd shop. 22 cents is worth the price though, for a nice place to rest your mug of coffee.

I was a HUGE fan of the Cranberries' first three albums and Dolores is definately on my Top 10 favorite singers list but the group's last two attempts seemed... weird. But this album... classic Dolores. Back to the days of Linger and Zombie. Love it. I am SO glad she decided to grace us with more of her melodic voice.

3 out of 5 stars Well,.......2006-07-19

fact is that the shugarhill gang is simply a dressed up representation of what rap was and instead of trying to make something real, they tried to make something that everyone could relate to. The fact is that that isn't what rap is about. Rap is about being true to who you are and being willing to make light of it by singing about it. This isn't a rap album, it's a funk album, and the fact is that there are many better early rap albums that don't get their due because they came after this one.

5 out of 5 stars Trendsetter.......2005-05-18

As one of the first rap songs , Rapper's Delight(1979) has a very definite place in music history. to say it was a trendsetter is an understatement. If you think of it subsequent rap was a crib on this song. It is one of the very few rap songs that I like.
And unlike so much of today's rap it has nothing dirty or violent in it , just a lot of funky fun. It brings back so many memories to lovers of the early 80's disco period. Just hearing the cool beat makes you want to get down and jam :
"see i am wonder mike and i like to say hello
to the black, to the white, the red, and the brown, the purple and yellow".
Some parts of the long rap song are really humorous and make you laugh ,others are just mellow and make you groove. But you will love every minute of it. I love it for the nostalgia value. Bring back 1979 NOW!

5 out of 5 stars After 20 years, they never stop entertaining us. . ........2001-12-25

Sugarhill Gang, the ultimate in the "roots of Rap and Hip-Hop" take us back to when it all begin with this exhilerating anthology of their songs. From the traditional "Rapper's Delight" to other classics such as "Apache", to collaborations featuring the groups of the day, such as the Sequence, this album combines it all. No other anthology can take us through the roots of such a relatively new genre in music. This album will entertain even the most hardcore rap enthusiast, for it is the core of their dogma.

5 out of 5 stars timeless jam.......2000-12-10

can't say enough about this song&it's impact.til this day it can rock any place.it's so free&fun.hearing this song is like magic to your ears&mind.a must have jam.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved from 1st time I heard it in 1980.......1999-05-01

I have never really been a big fan of Rap, but in this case, it's the best. Back in 1980, I was working at a roller skating rink as a floor guard, the first time I heard Rappers Delight. When the song started, everyone went out on the floor and just started jamming. My sincere opinion of the song is, "IT'S A MUST HAVE ALBUM" in everyones music library.**********************

5 out of 5 stars More Brady Movie Music.......2006-09-16

This is a pretty "groovy" soundtrack. Now that we've seen the Brady's enter modern times in the first movie, there's no need to have them run into hard rock music in the sequels soundtrack. Instead there is more music from their day; Monkees, The Archies and Davy Jones. The new movie versions of "Time To Change" and "Good Time Music" are pretty good and were made with effort. This soundtrack also has the original "Girl". The soundtrack also has a bunch of funny dialogue clips from the movie, like when the Brady kids offer to give the kidnapper Jan instead of Carol. Enjoy if you're a fan of the show and movies. No more new ones available. Thank goodness for Amazon Market.

all of the songs are great.there are clips from the movie before almost every song.if you like the brady bunch you will love the soundtrack for a very brady sequel.

If you love both of the Brady Bunch movies then you'll absolutely love this one. Even though there aren't many songs, they are all good. You don't have to worry about what song it on because no matter what you'll like it. A must-have for all Brady fanatics!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.......2005-08-16

I only have hazy memories of Gene Pitney during his glory days. (I was only a little kid back then). I do remember Liberty Valance, It Hurts To Be In Love and especially Town Without Pity which I sent my grandfather out to buy, without success! LOL. This is a great set. If you want to know what great 60's music was like sung by one of the best 60's crooners, you cant top Gene Pitney. This has many more songs than the other compilations and is worth the extra price. Great music doesnt date and this is 60's music at its best!

4 out of 5 stars No...not quite "ultimate"...darnit.......2005-04-24

Yes...it's a marvelous package with a first-rate interview with Gene Pitney himself, but, amazingly, of the 17 mono or rechanneled tracks, 10 of those in mono....have been previously issued in stereo on other collections! Pitney's producer was known for producing Pitney (from "Liberty Valance" on) using multi-track stereo equipment. In some cases, additional harmony vocals were added to the mono mixdown. That explains why "It Hurts To Be In Love" has never been issued in stereo. (On the plus side, one of the mono tracks here, "That Girl Belongs To Yesterday" is usually issued in stereo missing the harmony vocal!).

So...on this "Ultimate" collection, "Mecca" is in mono (why??). Same goes for "True Love Never Runs Smooth", "Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa", "Who Needs It", "Yesterday's Hero", and "Looking Thru The Eyes Of Love", among others.

I own it...but I'm disappointed. This previously-available-in-stereo mono issue also hampers finding a definitive CD by The Searchers.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the ultimate Gene Pitney collection.......2003-03-31

This is a very comprehensive collection of Gene's finest music. All his British and American hits are here, including his American country hits with George Jones and his late eighties duet with Marc Almond.

In the sixties, Gene had many high-charting pop hits in Britain and America. Curiously, none of them reached number one, although he reached number two in both countries with different songs. He finally got to number one in Britain when Marc Almond and Gene recorded Something's gotten hold of my heart as a duet.

I'm gonna be strong was Gene's only hit to reach the top ten in both Britain and America. Gene's other top ten American hits to be found here are The man who shot Liberty Valance, Only love can break a heart and It hurts to be in love. Gene's other top ten British hits to be found here are Twenty four hours from Tulsa, That girl belongs to yesterday, I must be seeing things, Looking through the eyes of love, Princess in rags, Backstage, Nobody needs your love, Just one smile and the original solo version of Something's gotten hold of my heart.

With a total of fifty tracks this collection includes not just the essentials, but all the minor hits and even a couple of songs recorded in Italian. It also includes his original version of Hello Mary Lou, a song he wrote before he had a recording contract and which was a huge hit for Ricky Nelson.

You won't find a better compilation of Gene's music anywhere, although if you just want a basic sixties hits collection there are plenty of single CD's to choose from.

5 out of 5 stars SIX STARS RATING ON PITNEY.......2001-08-27

THIS 2 CD COMPILATION RANKS AS ONE OF THE GREATEST DEALS AVAILABLE AT AMAZON.COM.I HAVE COLLECTED MOST OF GENE'S MUSIC OVER THE PAST 40 YEARS AS HE CONTINUES TO BE ONE OF THE GREATEST MUSICAL ENTERTAINERS OF ALL TIME.TO DENY YOURSELF THIS WONDERFUL PIECE OF MUSIC HISTORY WOULD BE SINFUL-HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible - Fifty songs by a great artist!.......2001-07-21

There are hit pop songs (I counted 24 that I recognized), hit country songs, hit songs in Italian, and a well-chosen selection of songs which document Gene Pitney's very successful Anglo-Euro career and which many Americans will, like me, be hearing for the first time. This is the most comprehensive anthology of any artist I've seen outside of the coffee-table box-set types that sell for many times more than this. What a terrific find! The interview on the liner notes is informative and fun. Gene Pitney participated in a song-by-song commentary going right down the list of all 50 songs, with plenty of storytelling to illuminate the people and situations surrounding each. It's a treasury of insight into the personality and history of the artist and his times that simply can't be found elsewhere. Candid, funny and fascinating, I'm sure there's a great book in this man waiting to be written! Back to the music: What must be said is that Gene Pitney was the most accomplished male vocalist of the 60s "teen idol" set, with great pipes, a unique sound, incredibly nuanced phrasing and a flair for drama that made his vocals both real and moving. From "Liberty Valance" to "Half Heaven - Half Heartache," he gave conviction to every lyric and easily pulled the listener into his world. Considering he was only twenty when his singing career began (apparently without any formal vocal training beyond what he picked up as a songwriting, demo-singing worker-bee at the Brill Building), you have to conclude that this guy is seriously gifted, and was born to the task. Add to that a truly top-notch selection of material which yielded (for starters) about a dozen 60s classics, and I wouldn't hesitate to put him right beside Sinatra as the best vocal interpreter of his generation. In short, if you're even a casual fan, you'd be foolish to pass this up. Buy "Looking Through Gene Pitney" and prepare to be amazed and delighted by this man and his music.

Wow! This song is not on any other compilation i have seen. Killer teen song. Rest of the cd is good also, no other voice like Gene Pitney

5 out of 5 stars Typical Gene albums full of quality.......2003-03-05

The first of the albums making up this twofer was built around his American top 20 hit, Mecca, and appears to be made up of entirely original material, including Aladdin's lamp and Mr Moon Mr Cupid and I, both of which he wrote himself. If any of the others are covers, they are so obscure that I don't recognise them, although Not responsible was subsequently covered by Britain's Helen Shapiro, the teenage hit-maker who eventually became a fine jazz singer. Most of the songs here are generally upbeat in outlook, including the ballads. I particularly like Cornflower blue and Time and the river.

The second half of this twofer is actually a compilation of his best songs up to that time, including Only love can break a heart, Town without pity and The man who shot Liberty Valance. It also includes Gene's own version of Hello Mary Lou, which he wrote but which Ricky Nelson had a worldwide hit with. It was not the only song Gene wrote that became a hit for others - among other examples are He's a rebel (Crystals) and Rubber ball (Bobby Vee). The German version of Town without pity is included as a bonus track.

This is a fine collection of Gene's early sixties music. It is part of a long series of twofers released by British label Sequel. They also released a double-CD of his best music and that is a great starter for anybody unfamiliar with his music. For Gene Pitney fans, the first half of this twofer is particularly interesting.

Although Carol Jackson is an individual, her album has the sound of the girl groups of the sixties. If you own and like any of the many girl group anthologies, you're going to like this CD.

3 out of 5 stars this does not have these two albums.......2004-12-23

I love Gene Pitney, as a long term fan I have both the albums they are implying. Sorry, there are missing a bunch of songs. This is Gene Pitney has nearly 30 songs on it alone, and the other had 13. That is 43 songs, and this only has 25? What happened to the other 18, especially the poignant Civil War Ballad, "I'm afraid to go home."

There are plenty other good collections of Pitney. This is not one of them.

1 out of 5 stars Golden Greats/This is Gene Pitney.......2004-11-09

I own the original LP version of "This is Gene Pitney" from the sixties. It is a two album set that has a playlist of 24 songs.
The cover art shown is from the original LP, but the playlist shown for this product is not the complete one from the original. Buyer beware!!

5 out of 5 stars Two albums of well-chosen covers.......2003-03-14

Gene Pitney originally established his reputation as a songwriter - he wrote Hello Mary Lou for Ricky Nelson - then as a hit-maker, but he later recorded several albums of covers. Two of them can be found here.

The first, from 1967, is a collection of songs that had been American hits for others in the sixties, although Jay and the Americans' version of Cara Mia was itself a cover. Unlike Cara Mia, several of the songs were also hits in Britain and elsewhere around the world. These include Bus stop (Hollies), Stop in the name of love (Supremes), Baby I need your loving (Four tops, but it was the Fourmost who had the British hit), A groovy kind of love (Mindbenders), The green green grass of home (originally a country hit for Porter Wagoner, it became an international pop hit when Tom Jones covered it), You've lost that loving feeling (Righteous brothers) and Crying (Roy Orbison). The other three songs - Count me in, Time won't let me and Mission bell - are less well known, but still enjoyable.

The second album, from 1969, is a Platters tribute album. The Platters sometimes had hits with covers, so some of the songs are much older than the fifties, but all these songs are now regarded as Platters songs. So you get Gene's versions of Harbor lights and Smoke gets in your eyes, both originally from the thirties, as well as their own classics, including The great pretender, Twilight time, I'm sorry and Only you.

As if these two outstanding albums were not enough, there are four bonus tracks, including a wonderful version of Petula's Beautiful sounds, as well as I just can't help myself, a UK A-side single from 1971.

5 out of 5 stars excellent cover versions.......2002-07-15

This CD joins two albums originally from 1967 and 1969 plus 4 bonus tracks. The gifted vocalist Gene Pitney recorded cover versions of several artists with quite different musical styles, he gives pop renditions of the classic Motown songs "Baby I Need Your Lovin'" (The 4 Tops), The Supremes' "Stop! In The Name Of Love", Jay & The Americans' Italian ballad "Cara Mía", Phil Spector's timeless classic "You've Lost That Lovin'Feeling", Tom Jones' country song "The Green Green Grass of Home", the second album is completely dedicated to cover 50's songs of the band The Platters. Once again Gene shows his vocal talent and an exemplary choice of the songs.
Since 1999 I've been reading that a full length complete CD of Gene Pitney's new recordings is ready to be released, having he recently been inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame could be a good opportunity to release it.

5 out of 5 stars Golden Greats Review.......2001-06-01

Again, This guy never ceases to amaze me. He sings thses songs as well as the original artists do! This album has become one of my favorites. My favorite song on this album is "My Prayer". As with his other songs, he sings it with feeling and passion. His professionalism shows in everything he sings. If I had my way, Gene Pitney would be in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame (long over due in my opinion). I can't wait till he comes out with a new album.

5 out of 5 stars Mulgrew Delivers.......2005-05-10

This is a fine album from one jazz's most consistently rewarding players. I saw Mulgrew MIller playing with Woody Shaw and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the early 80's. I said, this is one tall dude and he can really play (get it 'Wingspan'). I never bought any the albums where is he is leader until later. He is widely recorded as a sideman on so many good albums.

But on this album he delivers tunes that stay in your mind. The band is cooking; Steve Wilson(sax) and Steve Nelson(vibes) have recorded with Mulgrew quite a bit. Mulgrew is clearly the leader, but the band members get to shine. I compare this album to 'Hand in Hand' which has similar instrumentation, but has more of a 'Hard Bop' feel. This album has plenty of authority, but the compositions and playing have a lighter more graceful touch. Overall, another outstanding album.

5 out of 5 stars The best yet in a fine catalogue.......2002-10-13

I first encounterd Mulgrew Miller on his brilliant early recording, Countdown. It was when I was first getting into jazz, and it featured some of the late Joe Henderson's finest sax work. It also had, I believe, a young Renee Rosnes on piano. I don't remember the drummer, but I think it might have been Billy Drummond, Renee's husband. Countdown was one of the records that facilitated my complete conversion to acoustic jazz from jazz lite.

This new record, probably some 20 years hence from Countdown, only confirms Mulgrew Miller's early flowering of genius. Over the years, as jazz players often do, on account of the strange economics and aesthetics that control the jazz industry, Miller has struggled to find the proper musical context to optimally display his pianistic genius. Well, he's found it on The Sequel.

Ostensibly a reprise of or follow up to another early Miller recording, Wingspan, The Sequel retains only Steve Nelson, probably the foremost practioner of his instrument, on vibes from the earlier group. All the other players (Steve Wilson on alto and soprano sax, Duane Eubanks on trumpet, Richie Goods on bass, and Karriem Riggins on drums) are new. Of these Karriem Riggins makes the strongest impression, with a deep groove and swing, brilliant colorations, and sheer rhythmic dynamism casually eminating from every stroke he takes. Duane Eubanks, Kevin and Robin's younger brother, also impresses mightly, as does Richie Goods, rock-solid on acoustic bass. I've never been that impressed with Steve Wilson, but he plays his butt off here and comes through like a champ.

As for the headliner, with this record he seems to have vaulted himself to the very head of jazz pianists. He's more relaxed, more confident, more creative than I've ever heard him.

Of particular note are the strength and variety of the compositions, from the elegiac, Middle-Eastern flavored "Know Wonder," to the Brazilian-drenched, sadly uplifting "Samba D'Blue," to the post-bop swing of "Go East Young Man." In the interior of the smartly packaged disc, Miller says, "I strive to compose beautiful melodies and interpret them with a beat that dances." I'd say he's admirably accomplished that goal here.

It's been seven years since his last recording as a leader (although he's been on more than 200 recording dates in that time!), and it's been more than worth the wait. Highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Mulgrew....You Did It Again.......2002-09-19

Since that fateful Carbondale, Illinois Autumn day in 1993, when I first heard Mulgrew Miller's "Hand in Hand" album, I have been in love with his music.

Mulgrew Miller is an accomplished composer, arranger, performer and bandleader. The "Sequel" album is only the latest offering that displays Miller's complex style. I saw Miller play along side of Benny Golson at the 2001 Chicago Jazz Festival and I can tell you he is a treat to listen to.

There is absolutely no filler on this album. Miller is yet to come out with an album that has filler.

Its all substance dude!!!
