Considering their place in hip-hop history, De La Soul have had a rough ride. The Long Island trio's 1989 debut album, 3 Feet High & Rising, single-handedly did more to popularize rap music outside the genre's core audience base than any other record to that point, but the band have been made to pay a heavy price for helping make hip-hop one of the biggest selling sectors in popular music. This collection gives the band's legacy a stereotypical overview. There are two discs, but the second half is given over to collaborations and remixes. Admittedly, every track is exceptional, giving a consistently high-quality listen, but the balance is askew. Six tracks from 3 Feet High & Rising is understandable, but almost ignoring the mainstream-shunned, underground-loved Buhloone Mind State and Stakes Is High albums is short-sighted. De La Soul are hip-hop's Prince, widely praised for things they did years ago, their new work subjected to unfairly slanted comparisons with their debut. SOME CLASSIC UPBEAT RAP.......2005-06-15

This album is a classic 'friendly rap'...it has tonnes of upbeat tunes, and contains classics such as ' me, meself & I'.
To me this rap is a playful rap and not on the same level of expression as rappers such as 2PAC and N.W.A, but it contains catchy beats and tunes. Many of these songs sound similar though.Ideal rap when you want to escape from all the modern rubbish and just 'absorb' the music.

BEST of DE LA SOUL?.......2004-04-18

This is an excellent album that you can listen to again and again, some tracks are totally soothing like 'me,myself and I', but some tracks from previous de la soul albums are not featured on this album, when I think they should be.
But it still is a wonderful album that should go in any fan of hip-hops collection.

The Works? Not quite..........2002-08-26

As a fan of De La, I am always on the look-out for something new from Pos, Dove and Mase - be it remixes, soundtrack/compilation appearances, B-sides, or guest spots. I was rather excited when I saw this new disc of "their best remixes and special versions," and bought it immediately. But despite the presence of a few gems, it's mostly disappointing and probably not worth the high import pricetag.

The "Buddy" remix is an undisputed classic, and the remixes of "Ring, Ring, Ring" and "Jenifa" stand out as signature songs as well. I also enjoyed the mixes of "Say No Go" and "Keepin' The Faith," which pleasantly don't stray far from the excellent original versions. Most of what's left are either Euro-Techno style dance mixes (which I don't care for) or album versions (which are all good-to-excellent tracks but are curiously included on a remix cd). And while most of their discography is represented, there are no songs from the underrated "Buhloone Mind State" album included.

Brain-body rap fuel is cool.......2005-07-21

This is where the dictation connection of rap can find its Higher Purpose: DJ Alex J's delivery of Intelligence combined with musical textures and tones. Consider this food for the Sophisticated Cool. Anyone who can throw "abacus" into a sentence has the tools that need your attention; that's U Dig Da Mental in the co-Pilot's seat. Pump it along with sound effects that are Cosmically Connected--and dig that machine-like whine keyboard on "The Power of Words." Want more mood? It's got a Carribean-like bass tone that supports the social philosophy of "What Is Black?"

The D.O.R. use a less-is-more muted fluttering electric piano and jazz guitar to lend some air so you "Don't Sweat It": another great sample of a Thinking Man's creative touch. Follow the map of this rap and "Let it Go." That bird singing on flute is your guide; the Deviants are your Leaders. The percussionists take over on "Maxine" and the free-spirited happiness of "The Art of Mind Travel" was made to toss at a party. C'mon, slice it and dice it.
