It's not quite the first rap record, or the best, but Rapper's Delight--15 glorious minutes of the bass line from Chic's "Good Times," with a New Jersey crew spieling goofy routines about Superman and bad food on top--is one king hell of a party-starter. After that, they could have filled the rest of the disc with crowd noise and gotten away with it, but the Sugarhill Gang had a bunch of other party-jam hits, notably the almost-as-indelible "Apache" and "8th Wonder." Those songs show up here too, along with some entertaining non-hits and "Showdown," their rap-off with the Furious Five. What they're saying isn't really the point; the point is to move the crowd, and they're still hip-hop's greatest entertainers. --Douglas Wolk

4 out of 5 stars Huge Historical Significance; the Music is Good.......2007-07-26

This is definitely a good CD. It's hits from the Sugarhill Gang, whom many musical historians have designated as the first rappers. Or maybe it's that "Rapper's Delight" has been thought of as the first rap song? Rapper's Delight kicks off this album, and it's very catchy, chock full of creative lyrics [unlike today's swear-filled rap records] that make for a funny song. The full version, which is here, is very long. The rest of the disc shows itself very much a product of the times in which the songs were written, the early 80s. That's fine, but it's just that a number of the raps don't really have the flow I usually associate with rap. So the record ultimately didn't impress me enough for 5 stars. Good stuff tho, definitely worth 4.

4 out of 5 stars Hip Hop at it's best........2007-07-10

This is truly a get up and dance CD that everyone would love. You can't just sit down listening to this.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-03

Great Service, Quick Turnaround! I was very pleased. This was a very hard to get item.

4 out of 5 stars Not "Old School" But Rather "Before School Had a Name".......2006-10-29

The Sugarhill Gang brought Rap to the mainstream and in many ways cut a path for others to follow and build upon. Listening to this album, their nostalgic appeal is obvious. It is upbeat with catchy hooks and fun lyrics. The beat will get your head bopping and toes tapping. This is timeless music about partying, having some good fun from "Back in the Day" where the worst thing you could be is a "Sucka MC."

Recommended songs: "Rapper's Delight," "Apache," "Kickin' It Live From 9 to 5."

What this is not: Do not expect the technical sophistication of today's recording artists with 48 track recording and computer assist. Do not expect to find some social message - the only message here is having fun at the club or party.

Personal Note: The Sugarhill Gang was my first exposure to Rap music more than 20 years ago. It is good to hear rap without someone "Bustin a cap," or demeaning women. As to its staying power, I played this for the college student hire in my office and it was a big hit with her.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2005-09-09

I applaud the person who put Super Pimp in his place. For that prick to have the audacity to disrespect them shows great ignorance on his part in the culture of Hip Hop. The Sugarhill Gang, along with the hip hop Holy Trinity (DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa) are the embodiment of Hip Hop.

Admittedly, I'm a fan of "Gangsta" rap as well, but I still respect, appreciate and enjoy the originators of this incredible genre... and if you think NELLY is gangsta there is something seriously wrong with you. I just hope Super Pimp realises that "Gangsta" music originated from "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five (featuring Melle Mel).

Aaanywho, "Rapper's Delight" is a timeless classic and "Apache" is the hip hop ANTHEM, containing a lot of elemental old school Hip Hop, helping to unify the Hip Hop sound. This album is a must-have when one wishes to reminisce about the "Good Ol' Days", although be prepared for the depressing realisation that THAT kind of vibe will never be duplicated again.

With the exception of one new track--the cynically titled "One for the $," by the Sugarhill Gang and Melle Mel--and some commentary by Ice-T and Public Enemy's Chuck D, there's nothing on The Showdown that can't be found on other collections. The Showdown also skips some important classics--"The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" and Grandmaster Melle Mel and the Furious Five's "Beat Street" among them. Those quibbles aside, this collection does achieve its goals: by showcasing the Sugarhill Gang--who emphasized the party groove from which rap came--and the extended Grandmaster Flash family--who saw themselves as social messengers (pun intended)--side by side, the album brings to light the pair's differences and groundbreaking creativity. Looking back on them decades after the fact with ears accustomed to production gymnastics, we can occasionally--and criminally--miss this.(For a more complete look at the two pioneers of rap and how they fit in with their contemporaries, check out The Sugar Hill Records Story.) --Randy Silver

4 out of 5 stars Showdown--Old School Style........2007-07-17

GREAT CUTS ON THIS CD! PURCHASED TO HEAR "THE MESSAGE", AND "RAPPER'S DELIGHT"--SURPRISED BY SO MUCH MORE, FROM EACH GROUP, OF SIMILAR MUSICAL QUALITY! "APACHE","NY NY", "LIVIN' IN THE FAST LANE"--"WHITE LINES" (SERIOUS, SOLID, OLD-SCHOOL, TIMELESS BEATS), JUST TO NAME A FEW.
ONLY DOWN SIDE TO THIS CD ARE THE SPOKEN "RATINGS" OF EACH SONG BY ICE-T & CHUCK D--A FEW SECONDS LONG, AFTER EACH "DUEL" (AFTER ONE SONG BY EACH GROUP). IT'S ABSOLUTELY, TOTALLY, UNNECESSARY TO HEAR WHAT THESE TWO HAVE TO SAY--IF YOUR EARS WORK, THAT'S ALL YOU'LL NEED TO ENJOY THIS TREAT. JUST SKIP THE "REVIEW" TRACK AFTER EACH SECOND SONG. "SHOWDOWN" IS A SHOW-STOPPER!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CD!

3 out of 5 stars Well,.......2006-07-19

fact is that the shugarhill gang is simply a dressed up representation of what rap was and instead of trying to make something real, they tried to make something that everyone could relate to. The fact is that that isn't what rap is about. Rap is about being true to who you are and being willing to make light of it by singing about it. This isn't a rap album, it's a funk album, and the fact is that there are many better early rap albums that don't get their due because they came after this one.

5 out of 5 stars Trendsetter.......2005-05-18

As one of the first rap songs , Rapper's Delight(1979) has a very definite place in music history. to say it was a trendsetter is an understatement. If you think of it subsequent rap was a crib on this song. It is one of the very few rap songs that I like.
And unlike so much of today's rap it has nothing dirty or violent in it , just a lot of funky fun. It brings back so many memories to lovers of the early 80's disco period. Just hearing the cool beat makes you want to get down and jam :
"see i am wonder mike and i like to say hello
to the black, to the white, the red, and the brown, the purple and yellow".
Some parts of the long rap song are really humorous and make you laugh ,others are just mellow and make you groove. But you will love every minute of it. I love it for the nostalgia value. Bring back 1979 NOW!

Sugarhill Gang, the ultimate in the "roots of Rap and Hip-Hop" take us back to when it all begin with this exhilerating anthology of their songs. From the traditional "Rapper's Delight" to other classics such as "Apache", to collaborations featuring the groups of the day, such as the Sequence, this album combines it all. No other anthology can take us through the roots of such a relatively new genre in music. This album will entertain even the most hardcore rap enthusiast, for it is the core of their dogma.

4 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved from 1st time I heard it in 1980.......1999-05-01

I have never really been a big fan of Rap, but in this case, it's the best. Back in 1980, I was working at a roller skating rink as a floor guard, the first time I heard Rappers Delight. When the song started, everyone went out on the floor and just started jamming. My sincere opinion of the song is, "IT'S A MUST HAVE ALBUM" in everyones music library.**********************

Easily the two most overused words in music criticism are essential and classic. That said, this five-CD box set is all that and a bag of chips to boot. Back in the late 1970s, the small Sugar Hill Records label changed the nature of the rap genre with the music, made with a live band, that they released--and the beats still sound on point today. This box set features tracks from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Sequence, the Sugarhill Gang, the Funky 4 + 1, and the Treacherous 3 (to name just a few) and classic tracks like "The Message," "Freedom," and "Rapper's Delight." In other words, classic, essential party music that still rocks the house. Everybody say ho! --Amy Linden

    2 out of 5 stars It's a rappers delight!!!.......1999-09-22

This album goes way back to the beginning of rapmusic. Back to the days of broken glas everywhere and casanovo fly. You can't have better than this. The godfathers of rap are in the house.

5 out of 5 stars Classic "Old School" that started the rap movement.......1999-03-17

This box-set is an example of the classic "old school" that started the rap movement back in the early 80s. With 5 CDs of music, there's a lot to sift through. Each disc contains at least three or four essential tunes that clearly define why this music was so groundbreaking (and still is today). You've got all 14 minutes of "Rapper's Delight", two versions of "The Message", and a host of other notably catchy numbers. Even though Sugar Hill didn't invent the rap genre, they were the first to make it popular among the masses. The set also includes a booklet that contains several articles detailing the Sugar Hill story. For anyone who's into "old school" in the strictest sense of the word, then this box set is a must!

I bought this for the slow jam Here I am. I like the rest of the tracks, but this has alwyas been my favorit cut on this recording.

5 out of 5 stars full version of Rapper's Delight.......2006-10-24

It's possible that the previous reviewer got an earlier release version of this album but I ordered mine from Amazon last year and it has the 15 minute (actually 14 min, 23 seconds) version of Rapper's Delight on it. It would be nice if Amazon would check this item and put that in the details (whether it is the 4:55 (original 45 RPM version), 6:30 (original short version on 12") or 15:00 (original long version on 12")).

4 out of 5 stars This was the JAM back in 1980.......2003-04-20

Strictly speaking, this isn't the first rap album as it has only 3 actual rap tunes on it. But in the summer of 1980 (a VERY good summer for R&B albums in general) this was the JAM! "Sugarhill Groove" (with an amazing drum break by the legendary Tito Puente) was perhaps the funkiest track the gang ever recorded. Highly underrated. "Rapper's Reprise" with the Sequence (including the young Angie Stone) is not so hot, but the slower tunes "Passion Play," "Bad News Don't Bother Me," and "Here I Am" in particular, show that the gang were not half bad as singers. Oh yeah, the version of "Rapper's Delight" included here is not the complete version. But overall, a very enjoyable and worthwhile purchase that (for the most part) still remains enjoyable two decades later.

This is an obviously bootlegged CD of the early work of the Sugar Hill Gang and Gradmaster Flash from the earliest days of rap. Much of this is not available elsewhere on CD, so that's a plus. In fact, some of these tunes (Rapper's Reprise, Sugar Hill Groove, and Passion Play) are from the 1980 Sugar Hill Gang album, which has never been released on CD in its entirety. The very rare track "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" (c. 1981) which is acknowledged as the first public recording of a DJ mix. Many of the better tunes here, however, are not in complete form.
