The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

"David Lee who?" is the question posed by this 2 Disc compendium of six years of Sammy Hagar-era performances. "Won't Get Fooled Again" is too obvious and tired a tune to be more than a novelty; better bets are firey renditions of "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "Jump" (highlighted by Hagar's Michael Jackson impersonation). --Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:
Van Halen Live, Gotta Love it.......2007-06-05
Good But still.......2006-04-29
Albums (not boots, videos) from 86 and 98 tours would be better.......2006-04-06
1 Mike bass solo is proof of his poor skills
2 Alex drum solo is way too long - who likes drum solos(not talking about drummers:))
3 Cover of the Who is maybe good idea, but why "Won't get fooled...", "can't explain" would be better choice.
Highlights: Poundcake, Judgement day(you can see Eddie soloing:)), Spanked, Man on Mission, Right Now, 316(of course) - it's in fact Eddie's long solo with cathedral, eruption and other licks. But I think guitar solofrom "Live without a net" was even better.
So, it's very good recording, but after watching some videos from diferent VH gigs I think that band was in better shape in 1986 when recording "Live without a net" video. Not to mention VH3 tour.
Recommended for Van Hagar fans.......2006-01-25
"Live: Right Here, Right Now" has a lot going for it. Many of these live renditions sound fuller than the studio versions, especially songs from "5150" and "OU812." Hagar's monologues, although at times long-winded, are generally interesting, especially his speech about living in the moment in the middle of "Panama." The instrumentals are more hit-or-miss. And there are A LOT of instrumentals; a drum solo, a guitar solo, and a bass solo. If you're into that sort of thing you will be well pleased with this release. But if you don't care for long instrumentals and solos, you may find them tedious. A cover of the WHO's "Won't get fooled again," sounds good, an obvious choice it may be.
The biggest drawback of this release is that it focuses exclusively on the Sammy Hagar-era of the band. It would have been far more desirable to have two CDs, the first covering '78-84 shows, (with Roth) and the second covering the Hagar era. But because the Van Halen brothers have always tried to downplay the Roth years and make Van Hagar out to be the definitive Van Halen (see "The Best of Both Worlds") we get a double-album of the Red Rocker without any Diamond Dave. When the band plays Roth-era material, it sounds good, until the vocals come in. As much as I like Sammy, he never could pull-off singing the Dave songs. While Hagar doesn't butcher the Roth songs, they just sound goofy, i.e. "got my ass against the record machine"(Hagar's replacement, Gary Cherone, did a terrific job singing all three eras on Van Halen's 1998 World Tour). Another problem with "Live: Right Here, Right Now" is that there are too many songs from "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge." Even if this had to be a Hagar-only live album, more songs from "5150" and "OU812" should have been included.
While "Live: Right Here, Right Now" isn't exactly KISS "ALIVE," (1975) it's still a pretty good album. While casual fans are advised to stay away, VH fans, especially fans of Van Hagar will enjoy this release. Hopefully someday an official Roth-era live VH album will see the light of day.
Well(3.25 stars)...............2005-11-20
As mentioned above, this is one of the best sounding live albums out there, and even though the tracklisting could have been better, this is still decent. It is a collection of Van Halen songs recorded live in about a four or five year time span from when Sammy Hagar was the lead singer of VH,and here, you hear Van Halen perfroming nine out of the eleven songs from Knowledge,as well as four songs from the Roth era of Van Halen("Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love","Panama",and half of both "You Really Got Me" and "Eruption"),two of Sammy Hagar's solo songs("There's Only One Way to Rock" and "Give to Live"),four songs from their "5150" album("Dreams","Love Walks In","Why Can't This Be Love?",and "Best of Both Worlds"),three songs from the Van Halen(Hagar era)album "OU812"("When It's Love","Finish What Ya Started",and half of "Cabo Wabo"),along with a pretty good cover version of The Who classic "Won't Get Fooled Again". Like another reviewer already mentioned, the sound and quality of this live album is so good that it is like a party on a CD,and Michael Anthony's bass solo,Alex Van Halen's drum solo, and Eddie Van Halen's guitar solo(which starts off as the instrumental "316" leading into "Eruption")are all really good and solid, but the problem is the tracklisting. It isn't incredibly bad,but it is missing songs like "I Can't Drive 55"(I know that that is one of Sammy Hagar's solo songs, but if Sammy and everyone else in VH were going to play some of Sammy's solo material live, what was wrong with the idea of including a live performance of Sammy's most popular and most famous solo song on here????!!!!),there should have been a couple of more songs from the Roth era here(probably both "Dance The Night Away" and "Unchained"),and I think including live performances of "Black and Blue" and "Mine All Mine" from "0U812" would have been really cool also and would have helped this live album be better than it turned out(I don't mind the large amount of songs from For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge being here, with the exception of "Man On A Mission"). But everything else here is really good, while this is a fun live album to listen to--Sammy,Eddie,Alex,and Mike all do a great job at contributing to that. The booklet accompanying this live album, which has pictures of Van Halen from their tour on which this live record was recorded,is really cool and is a good supplement to this CD.
Bottom Line:buy this live album ONLY if you are a die hard Van Halen fan, like both the Roth and Hagar eras of Van Halen, and don't mind the tracklisting here.

Album Description
Composer, pianist and three-time Grammy nominee David Benoit continues his legendary status as the pioneer of smooth jazz with his latest release, "Right Here, Right Now." Maintaining his signature style of tranquility, Benoit decides to loosen up a bit and add a little funk on this CD. The opening cut, "Watermelon Man" offers Herbie Hancock's classic funk but also embraces a retro-60's sound that Benoit classifies as "funky jazz" or "jazz rock". The title track, "Right Here, Right Now", produced by longtime friend and trumpet player Rick Braun captures the true essence of a David Benoit classic. James Taylor's "Don't Let Me be Lonely Tonight" is cushioned with an intoxicating live jazz treatment accompanied by a 22-piece string section. Benoit's musical selections reflect his attraction for a range of jazz-inflected styles, from contemporary pop to pure bebop, orchestral and hip-hop. On the cadenced "Jellybeans and Chocolate" titled with his daughter June in mind, he introduces up and coming smooth jazz musicians, Brian Culbertson (trombone) and Euge Groove (saxophone). Benoit also features the talents of his live band on the bossa nova inflected ode to Hawaii, "Swingin Waikiki" and "Quiet Room" a touching dedication to his late father.Customer Reviews:

For this movie about 1930s boxer Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe), director Ron Howard interrupted his longtime collaboration with composer James Horner and teamed up with Thomas Newman. It's a wise decision: Newman has a lighter touch and his somber palette emphasizes the fact that Cinderella Man is more thoughtful drama than mere brawling flick (even a track titled "Pugilism" eschews obvious punchiness in favor of ominous, rolling tribal-like percussion. Elsewhere, "Weehawken Ferry" illustrates Newman's ability to write swelling, majestic music that's not bombastic. Typical of the subdued approach is Paul Giamatti's version of "Londonderry Air," which he delicately whistles. The score is interspersed with a few lovely Depression-era tunes such as Chicago tenor saxist Bud Freeman's "Tillie¹s Downtown Now," Roane's Pennsylvanians' "We've Got to Put that Sun Back in the Sky," and especially Eddie Cantor's wonderfully biting "Cheer Up, Smile, Nertz" ("Our judges are queer/Our banks disappear/And all the while they tell us to smiiiiile"). --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
The Soundtrack to Cinderella Man is great.......2007-01-11
The other example is found in the scene where Joe Gould is seen driving off after just speaking with Jim about his hopes of getting him another fight after Jim had defeated Corn Griffin. Joe is trying to leave before Mae can see him because he knows she would not approve of his talking with Jim and the potential of another fight for her husband. Anyway, just as he gets in the car, and as he drives off, you can here Bud Freeman's "Tillie's Downtown Now" being played--another great song from that era.
Every sound of Cinderella Man is found on this soundtrack. The lone downside to this CD is that the songs are not found in the order they appear in the movie. The first four songs are in order and the last five or so are in order, and the rest is thrown in the middle. They are all there, but as is typical for most soundtracks, they don't all coincide with the order presented in the picture.
This soundtrack is a terrific purchase for any fan of this movie. You will not be disappointed.
Another good score from Thomas Newman........2006-11-07
Very nice.......2006-08-03
Why..........2006-07-11
A fairly conventional score for Thomas Newman, but enjoyable nonetheless.......2006-03-25
The piano is used a lot in the score, making appearances across most of the tracks, including the gentle "The Inside Out" or in "Mae", appear with the delicate strings that we have come to expect from Newman. "Pugilism" makes use of pizzicato movements, whereas the two Irish influenced tracks, "Hope of the Irish" and "Turtle", bring back some more unconventional instruments as one would expect. But largely, the score meanders in the background, establishing a delicate tone and texture, but never really taking a forefront. Of course, I must make mention of the wonderful "Weehawken Ferry", which presents a crisp walking movement of strings, similar to what was heard in Shawshank Redemption. However, it is not until the final few tracks that the music finally free's itself from it's subdued nature and reaches out. "Big Right" explodes with blaring french horns and sharp strings, until it finally fades off and allows the highlight track, "Cinderella Man", to come in. This track is Newman at his best, with his typical soaring string arrangement of the main theme introduced in "The Inside Out", before finally reverting back to quiet woodwinds and piano near the end.
Cinderella Man is by no means an innovative or groundbreaking score - it's a fairly conventional drama score. The same adjectives could be applied to the movie as well. Is it worth the pick-up? Definitely, if you are looking for more Newman goodness. However, if you're looking to get into the world of Newman with a more colorful score - try "Angels in America" or "Road to Perdition".

You can't go wrong w. this cd.......2005-09-14
Wow........2005-08-29
1) Those Days You Felt Alive - What a way to kick off an album. All the tracks on this disc can be favorites, but this one stands out. I love nothing more than to roll my windows down, open my sunroof, and blare this out of my car's speakers. I find myself sometimes embarrassed, because I sing along to this song every time. It's melodic opening is heart-pumping. The lyrics are sung beautifully. I myself play bass, and the bass tones here are perfect and sublime. Superb. 10/10
2) Kill The Drama - This song has an excellent chorus. This song is one of the more upbeat songs on the album. The beat to this song is very driving and pumping. Great. 9/10
3) Five Days and Counting - This is a slower, more pensive song than the earlier two. By no means, however, does this mean it lacks in any way. You can really focus on the lyrics of this song. Beautiful. 10/10
4) I Love the Way She Said "L.A." - Lyrically, this song stands up to the rest of the album, and even takes steps forward. This is somewhat majestic, and beautiful all the same. The drum beat on this song keeps it going perfectly. Check out the vocal tones here. Upbeat. Anyone who has ever been in a long-distance relationship can relate to this one. Excellent. 10/10
5) Stolen From Some Great Writer - Another driving song with a great melody. The lyrics and vocals here are worth listening. It's a better-than-average song, until towards the end, when I believe the band really shows off some talent. What you are left with, is one of the best moments on the cd. Top-notch, but I feel like I can't give every song a 10, and this one I think deserves a 9.
6) In The Same Lifetime - This song is lots of listener's favorite. It's the slowest song on the album, but probably the most majestic. It take some listening to a few times I think to really appreciate. The vocals here are really well-done. However, unless I am in a certain kind of mood, I sometimes skip this track for the next, which is more upbeat. For that reason, I think, I give this song an 8/10.
7) Am I Ready? - Probably 60% of this song is chorus. That may be generous, but I don't mind. It is a great, catchy chorus, but the verses here are often over-looked. What a driving song! This song is best played at high volume. This was my most listened to song on the album when I first purchased it. I think I've worn it out a bit, but it's still fanastic. I give it a 9/10.
8) Fairweather Friend - Some may not like this song. However, I do. Lyrically, it's a little different from the others. It's more interpersonal, I think. The beat is unquestionably catchy. Still, I think, this song pales in comparison to the next. Good, but not great. 7/10.
9) You Can't Stop - Wow. Just listen to the whole song and see if I'm wrong. The song builds up rather quickly and leaves you hooked the entire duration. What a great song to sing-a-long to. The end of this song is the most heart-pumping on the album. 10/10. This song could end the album perfectly, but alas, just when you're left to take in a deep breath, the next song comes and you're challenged to give just one more burst of energy and test your vocals some more...
10) Make My Heart Attack - Easily one of the more sing-able songs on the album. It has a very catchy, although repetitive beat and melody. The bridge is one of the best on the album, aside from the one in "Stolen From Some Great Writer" Again, the bass is exceptional. Lyrically, fantastic. And yes, another, 10/10.
Overall this cd is one of the best I've ever listened to. I grade a cd on the whole, not just the sum of its parts. As a whole, this cd rocks. There is one cool innovation on this album itself that I've never seen before. On the cd itself, one will find the saying, "You felt alive like a motion picture. It's just a matter of where you are when you're awake. When you fall asleep this music will end. Forget everything. Your dreams will remember right now." Reading through the lyrics in the book, you will find highlighted certain lyrics. These highlighted lyrics from each song, in the standard track listing order, form this phrase that you see on your cd. Kinda cool. That's all. Buy the cd.
