No one has bettered the ferocity, pace, and brutal power of this 28-minute 10-song set. Guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King fire out of the gate with the infamous "Angel of Death" and don't take a respite until the fifth cut, "Jesus Saves." And that breather lasts all of 30 seconds. Winding like a mutant Paganini piece, "Postmortem"'s hook is so inescapable that even metal neophytes will find it irresistible. Superbly sequenced and wonderfully executed, this favorite of producer Rick Rubin stands as the most extreme album in thrash-metal history. --Steffan Chirazi

5 out of 5 stars BEST SLAYER CD !!.......2007-06-20

IF YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A METAL HEAD THEN YOU PRABABLY ALREADY HAVE THIS CD, IF NOT GO BUY IT NOW.This album is more or less 30 minutes but it is worth every seconds.Sure the production is not up to date (the album is
20 years old!!) but even today i think this album is the most angriest heaviest metal album of all time.

5 out of 5 stars You Either Like Slayer or You Don't, it's that simple.......2007-05-23

Personally, I would say this and "Seasons" are their best albums. "Seasons" I think one argue is more "musical", whatever that means. If you're a young person I can see how this album may sound dated, but you must realize this album was highly influential to many bands to come, in many different genres. However, there is only one thing I'd like to comment on, which disturbs me reading some of the negative reviews, the lyrics.

First, I don't think Slayer lyrics are meant to be taken too seriously. I never did when I was a kid, I sure as hell don't now as an adult; you want social commentary, listen to a Dylan record; somewhat abstract introspective, put on some Floyd. And this isn't a knock on those two artists, I like them both-different music for different moods.

Now, the whole Nazi, Mendel thing some people have a problem with, all I have to say is this: who the hell are you to say what is taboo and what someone can or can't write about? This stuff did happen, didn't it? There have been some groups throughout our history that burned books, censored what people could say, actually, you know one group that was really famous for this... NAZIS!

If you don't like it, don't buy it or listen to it. But NEVER demand what someone can or can't say!

5 out of 5 stars Reign Indeed!!!!!.......2007-05-21

Being sort of casual Slayer fan, this is the second of thiers,I have purchased.Seasons In The Abyss, being my first. They are fast becoming one of fave bands. The music is so raw and has great energy. Really from beginning to end, this one rocks!!!! Angel of Death and Raining In Blood, the ones I was most familiar with. But after hearing the whole thing,I can add a few more greats to fave list. That being,Piece By Piece,Jesus Saves,Criminally Insane,Reborn and Postmortem.Boy,what I have missed.A 1986 album and for twenty plus years, what I have missed. If you are a die hard, you,of course, know the album. If you are a growing diehard like me,check this one out now!!!! It will totally kick in your cd player.Go scare your neighbors with the Gods of Thrash!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BTW,I was lucky enough to buy at $13.99 for this import.

5 out of 5 stars Slayer awesome.......2007-05-20

I am new to slayer so i decided to start here it truely is a classic i thought it was all hype buy wow, the only dissapointment is that it is too short

5 out of 5 stars its true....this is the hardest fastest thrash metal album without cookie monster vocals.......2007-03-24

wow...it took long enough to get here but when it did...it completely blew me away. this is among the greatest thrash metal albums of all time with Metallica-Master of Puppets and Megadeth-Rust In Piece and im sure Anthrax has a good thrash cd but i only own their greatist hits. ANYWAY...like previous reviewers have said this album doesnt let up...at all. this was the most brutal album of its time. now heavy metal bands cite this as their "holy bible". and if they dont, then theyre missing out. BUY THIS ALBUM EVEN IF YOUVE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF SLAYER!!!although if u havent, then thats pretty sad. BUY THIS ALBUM EVEN IF YOUR JUST GETTING INTO METAL!!! its unrelenting and if u cant handle this album, then u should either
a)get metallica-master of puppets as thats not as hardcore as this album
or b) admit that your just not destined to listen to thrash metal and try a different genre.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful score.......2007-04-12

Though I would have liked to get some of the songs played in the movie on this CD, I was more than pleased with the score music. It's a moody combination of dark textures and haunting piano melodies, together with some more lighthearted grooves. Kent is excellent at setting strange combinations of acoustic instruments against ambient electronic washes, and I thought the score did a fantastic job of capturing the moods of the characters, especially the emotionally catatonic character Charlie, played by Adam Sandler.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite.......2007-04-12

The delicate textures and soulful melodies of this score are captivating. Kent has masterfully created a unique color palette that runs the full range of the film's emotions - from lighthearted and tender to exquisitely haunting. The music perfectly captures the characters of the film and renders them with depth and beauty. I particularly recommend listening to this score when writing, or driving, or well, pretty much anytime.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful, moving score.......2007-04-12

The instrumental score to REIGN is soft and touching and compassionate and moving. There were times during the film it made the hairs on my neck stand up. Quite simply an exceptionally beautiful score, at a time when most movie music is just wallpaper. Woven out of elegant washes of sound with piano melodies, delicate guitars and charangos adding texture. It's both relaxing and moving, and I particularly like driving to it.

It does not include any of the songs used in the film, but that's fine by me...I wanted the score.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2007-04-12

Just got this score CD by composer Rolfe Kent. I was turned on to his music by friends that have his Sideways and About Schmidt scores. A true musician. I have this playing throughout the day. Incredible sounds from this artist. Score albums are the best!! Soundtracks can't compete with score only.

1 out of 5 stars DISAPOINTED!!!!.......2007-04-11

I want my money back!!! Who cares about background music, if I want Muzak I'll just ride in the elevator for a couple hours. This album contains NONE of the awesome and compelling songs that were such an integral part of this film. What a complete letdown....

When New Jersey's Dana Owens adopted the stage moniker of Queen Latifah when she launched her rap career in 1989, she also assumed the regal bearing and flowing clothes of African royalty. Her raps not only demanded respect but also radiated an unassailable air of authority. Since then Latifah has branched out as an actress (starring in the TV sitcom Living Single), businesswoman (she co-owns Flavor Unit Management, which handles rappers like Naughty by Nature), and singer (she sings with a live jazz band on the concluding cut of a later album), but that imposing dignity remains her trump card on Black Reign, her first album for Motown after an unfriendly split with Tommy Boy. Her refusal to be pigeonholed or limited in any way is part and parcel of her demand for respect and makes her one of the most rapidly evolving artists in hip-hop. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars Da Queen hit'em hard wit dis one.......2007-06-02

Da Queen brought it all together on this one. She had already earned respect with her other albums, but this one put her on an even higher level than previous records did. She gave us everything on this one. She gave us Black Hand Side (catchy), Rough (the title speaks for itself), U.N.I.T.Y. (da anthem) and Just Another Day (smooth) and everything else in between. Most MC's can barely do more than one type of song, but she showed much versatility and that's why it is worth buying. This was the best Latifah album ever!

4 out of 5 stars Queen Latifah's in the house........2007-04-15

People do not really associate Queen Latifah with her music as much as her acting. Upon hearing her music... I was impressed, her songs are really funky and fun, including fast ryhmes and cool jazz with that 90's flair. This album is good, but I think her "All Hail The Queen" album is much better!

5 out of 5 stars The queen reigns supreme on this one.......2006-10-16

Standout tracks: BLACK HAND SIDE, LISTEN TO ME, I CANT UNDERSTAND, ROUGH(classic match up), BRING THE FLAVOR, COOCHIE BANG(nice safe sex promotion in this song), SUPERSTAR, JUST ANOTHER DAY(classic), U.N.I.T.Y.(best anti-misogynist record ever!) WINKI'S THEME(touching tribute to her dead brother) etc. Filler: I never liked Weekend Love but thats it. Bottom Line: Queen Latifah gives you and undeniable classic and unfortunately its the last good album you'll here from her. While she showcases her skills on songs like Black Hand Side, Rough, Bring the Flavor, she gives you some gems like Coochie Bang and U.N.I.T.Y(a song which she addresses misogyny). You will never hear records like these from these overrated drama queens that the rap game is infested with nowadays! LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!!!

5 out of 5 stars BlAcK ReIGn.......2006-08-30

Remember good hip hop music through the QUEEN!!! Check it out, all the tracks are cool. Especially recommended for those who haven't listened to this LP in awhile to re-discover it. A++

5 out of 5 stars Very funky album! The Tony Dofat songs still stand out! .......2006-03-06

This album from Queen Latifah still is a favorite to me! Makes me think that a live band is performing this entire album instead of different producers and samples. Especially U.N.I.T.Y. which is so funky--I'm thinking that there are live horns and a band instead of a sample. But there are countless standouts, especially Black Hand Side, I Can't Understand, Just Another Day, her tribute to her late brother and others. My favorites are the Tony Dofat produced songs, with his hard beats and the echoes on some of those beats. Dofat did about 6 to 7 songs, while S.I.D. and Kay Gee did the other half of the album. Dofat gives the S.I.D. songs some tight competition! I still like Listen 2 Me, perhaps Dofat's best produced song then or now. But Latifah's themes of standing up for yourself and making women take control of their lives are a common theme througout this album and that's what I love about Black Reign. I was pleased that she won a Grammy for U.N.I.T.Y.! I've played it more ever since it won. It makes this album more respectable. An album that I still love to this day!

5 out of 5 stars Lullabyes for staying up all night........2007-06-24

I just purchased "Sings Reign" along with "Telegraphs in Negative" today, and I have not stopped listening to them.

'Post-rock' as they call it... faux-classical as I sometimes like to cal it. It is definitely in the vein of bands such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, Lull, Noise Gate, Silver Mt. Zion, etc... Yes, there are members from GYBE in this band, and though the sounds are probably in the same genre, I would not necissarily classify them as similar. Perhaps to the untrained ear it would be considered the same, but Fire to Flames seems to veer much more towards the experimental drone/atmospheric/static/randomness in nature. If you're not sure what I mean, or think that this describes GYBE already, you will see what I mean if you purchase this record.

I highly recommend both of Fire to Flames' recordings. I feel it inspiring, haunting, calming, cerebral, and any other "makes me sound smart" adjective you can throw in there. Like I said, I have been listening to these records almost non-stop since getting them this morning, and it puts me in an interesting place. I actually reccomend this over most other post-rock I've been exposed to.

    4 out of 5 stars space.......2004-06-30

while there are millions of ambient artists out there, they dont have the sound that set fire to flames have. to go along with the other reviewer, there is an influence of the godspeed members but it is not at all like the albums made on constellation records. there is much more space, and mood set by eery strings and noise. it is kind of like infinity symbol of godspeeds, the more desolate, expansive sound and less grand compositions. its deff. something to check out if your into that kind of music but do not go in expecting another 'post rock' or whatever you want to call that genre. its in a field of its own pulling strings with noise artists with sampling and tape minipulation. enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars If your a Godspeed fan............2004-05-28

Then you must check the album out. "flames" is made up of 13 musicians from Montreal, 5 of which are Godspeed members. You can really hear the Godspeed members influence on this album. The songs are still highly stings driven and the dark atmosphere hasn't changed at all. One of the nicest things about this album is that they decided to shorten the length of their songs. It's nice to hear them take a different approach in their song constuction. All in all, this sounds and feels just like another Godspeed album. It's powerful, beautiful and completely unique. A must listen for fans of Godspeed, Mogwai and Sigur ros.

This CD is just a little too much churchy. Choir and organ music not what I remember from Shabbat services. Otherwise good.

    5 out of 5 stars powerfully spiritual.......2005-11-24

I usually play this when I am home alone. It is very moving and brings me to tears also. The solo voices are very beautiful. The music is also serene in some ways and I feel close to God when listening to it. I want to find more like it.

5 out of 5 stars Poignant musical celebration of the holiness of Shabbat.......2005-11-22

Thank God It's Friday has a completely different meaning for Jews. Sure, it's the end of the work week, but it's also a sacred time to devote ourselves to exploring our relationship with G-d. Depending on the branch of Judaism, anything from turning on the lights, turning the key in the ignition, or even writing falls under the 39 categories of forbidden work. Eighteen minutes before sunset, the Shabbat candles are lit and blessed, and the evening and next day is "a rest of love freely given, a rest of truth and sincerity, a rest in peace and tranquility, in quietude and safety." Shabbat has been likened to a bride (Shabbat ha-Kallah) and queen (Shabbat ha-Malkah), immortalized in Solomon ben Moses HaLvi Alkabets' poem L'kha Dodi.

Jews have always used music in worship (Psalm 150 is a good example); in the First and Second Temples, the Levites engaged in vocal and instrumental music, with the liturgy being sung chorally. Jewish liturgical music rapidly came into its own during the Middle Ages, with Sephardic music being strongly influenced by the Muslim occupation. The Reform movement sought to incorporate organ and trained choirs based on German Protestantism, and this is the sound present on "Thank God It's Friday."

There are 24 beautiful tracks, some instrumental (Shalom Aleichem, V'ahavta, Hatikvah), some with soloists (V'ahavta, L'cha Dodi, Aleinu, Va'Nachnu, Kiddush, Kedusha), and many with organ and full choir. This CD brought tears to my eyes with its beautiful, uplifting renditions of sacred songs, the combination of violin, organ, flute and full choir sounding very rich. Although other reviewers have mentioned the "echoey" sound, I didn't notice it at all. An absolute bargain for the current price, and a wonderful gift for those who love Jewish, classical, or liturgical choral music. Shabbat shalom!

1 out of 5 stars I want my money back.......2005-07-28

This is worse than Kumbya over and over and over again.

    2 out of 5 stars Although It's Not What I Was Looking For . . ........2003-06-27

It might address your needs . . . Think classical orchestra with classical choir . . . With the tempo running a tad on the slow side (actually more than just a tad) . . . It's not bad. You might enjoy the pompous nature of its classical renditions . . . I was hoping for a little more joy . . . This CD is just not what I wanted. Sigh.

Ultimately the issue is that I wanted a CD to help practice the blessings with . . . And I ordered it . . . and found out there was a reason this CD was so cheap.

    5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing..........2007-02-08

I'm going to make this review short and sweet because there is little to be said that hasn't already been said. I think this is Capleton's best album, he uses some awesome riddims, you might recognize them from some Sean Paul songs or Richie Spice's "Ghetto Girl."

Definitely check this out, you won't be disappointed. There isn't a single song on this album that doesn't make you want to start blasting his music and dancing.

If you're just getting into reggae/dancehall, this is a great place to start!!!

5 out of 5 stars STRAIGH FIYAH CAPLETON A BLAZE.......2006-01-19

look at the title, it describes the tracks, pure fire a run tingz on dis album Capleton has not let us down not like the Leaders Let The People Down:P

5 out of 5 stars The Fireman is bringing the fire .......2005-09-27

Capleton has been in the buisness for a while, and I have to say this is one of his best albums of all time. Its not up there with More Fire or Still Blazing but its close. He's a true bobo Rastaman that uplifts your spirit with his wicked riddims and tough lyrics. He's sending messages through his music just like Anthony B, Sizzla, and Luciano. I would highly reccomend this CD for any fan of Reggae Dancehall music

      5 out of 5 stars Don't Fear The Fire.......2005-03-12

I am a great appreciator of Capleton's fire and power. I don't agree with his occasional highlighting of homosexuals as the prevailing sign of human corruption. For the record, I see unfettered capitalism with it's corollary greed and exploitation of human/mineral/animal resources as infinitely more harmful than how people choose to express their gender/sexuality. I'm pleased to hear Capleton, on Reign of Fire, focus on global matters and cease his indictment of people who are, for the most part, unable to defend themselves from prejudice and abuse. It's important to note that his latest VP release, "Reign of Fire" avoids any mention of that subject that has some attempting to silence him. There's no coded language, no blatant reference. Nothing at all. Relax the repression of Capleton and enjoy the vibes as he chants down babylon.

Capleton is one of the most vibrant artists of any musical style performing today. I often wonder what a collaboration between Capleton and Angelique Kidjo, Carlinhos Brown, Femi Kuti or, better yet, Immortal Technique might sound like. I can imagine a musical incendiary device that the could reach rabble-rousing proportions. When King Shango says "That Day Will Come" you know he means it. And it's easy to feel inspired to join Capleton's Army. He's right when he says "They will never share" which is why he has to bun dem. Yes Iyah!

Reign of Fire is a brilliant album but I fear that most listeners don't really want Capleton to grow. If you want pure Fyah tracks I think that More Fire and Still Blazin' are more effective demonstrations of Capleton in that style. You can even look to "The People Dem" for the incessant fyah blazing. On Reign of Fire, you'll find 7 recent hits and 15 brand new tracks! This is not another singles compilation. This is a focused effort to speak directly to the audience that he understands so well.

Reign of Fire has no shortage of brilliant moments ranging from hardcore Ragga to Dancehall Roots ("Real Hot", "Jah Is My Everything", "Remember The Days"). Almighty also ventures occasionally into a delivery that you'd more likely expect from Luciano or Bushman, with the mellow roots tracks. Capleton lacks the vocal depth/range of Luciano or Bushman but appreciators can quickly get past that to feel that righteous Rasta spirit that the subject matter needs to push into the proper zone of righteous upliftment. Capleton means every word he says, he's the ideological heir to Peter Tosh's legacy. You'd be wise to buy it today.

5 out of 5 stars Reigning and Still Blazing Fire.......2004-12-05

Like he always chants, big riddim for big tunez..Then if that is what you are looking for then Reign of Fire is the album. Big conscious riddims in this CD, like Ton Load (One For The Road Riddim) and The Leader Let The People Down, Jah Is Everything, That Day Will Come (Hard Times Riddim), Never Share - Burn Dem (Forever Loving Jah Riddim). He also included some dancehall tunez, Who You calling Nigga; a very interesting and unique tune, Or Wah ( Renaissance Riddim) and one of the biggest summer dancehall tune, In her Heart (Chrome Riddim). Also got some for the ladies or let's say romantic, Sunshine Girl and Remember the Days, RtD is Wicked.

If you are looking for Dangerzone,Bun Dung Dreddie, or Couyah Couyah type of songs you won't find them in this CD.

Conscious vibes from the Fire Man himself, The prophet is reigning and still blazing more fire..Great CD. The Prophet still keeps the fire burning.

An essential album for Fenix TX fans. Fenix TX's high energy is brought to life on stage. Awesome versions of classic songs like "Pheobe Cates," "Tear Jerker" and "Threesome." Fenix TX's covers of CCR's "Fortunate Son" and Bowie's "Major Tom" are a rare treat. Highly suggested! Fenix TX fans and fans of the pop-punk genre will be stoked!
