Not the P.M. Dawn "Best Of" I would put together but............2004-04-27
So many would be "hits" are left off this CD. I would spend my money on their other CD's and compose your own "best Of". The beauty and intelligence of thhis band is unique and is now missing from today's bands. On the track Downtown Venus they sample the drum beat to Hush by Deep Purple and turn it into an incredible funky song. No one wlse these day is doing that. Also on the CD, Jesus Wept the song 9:45 wake-up dream was left of this compilation. This song is just pure magic.
I miss P.M. Dawn and hope they get together again for more magical moments in music.

This immaculately conceived and packaged fundraiser for the AIDS awareness foundation is a sharp tribute to Brazilian pop. David Byrne, Milton Nascimento, PM Dawn, Stereolab, Gilberto Gil, and Crystal Waters (vamping through "The Boy from Ipanema") are among those weighing in with sophisticated tunes that will cross from cocktail hipsters to the leading edge of the mass audience. --Jeff BatemanCustomer Reviews:

red hot and best!.......2007-05-14
the music, those great catchy samba and bossa nova tunes that became wildly popular during the 1960s, are suited to each of the artists making a guest appearance on the cd.
among the highlights are the trip-hop infused 'corcovado' by everything but the girl, the dance-club happy 'boy from ipanema' by crystal waters--which also contains one of her best vocal performances--, sting's loving, pensive 'how insensitive', maxwell's calming 'security' and caetano veloso's highly erotic 'e preciso perdoar'.
the collection, generally speaking, is a great party cd and each song is treated with a great deal of ingenuity and integrity.
New Takes on Brazilian Pop.......2005-06-30
Most of the songs contained herein were written way back in the day by Antonio Carlos Jobim and at least a few should be vaguely familiar: "The Girl From Ipanema", of course, but also "One Note Samba", "Waters Of March", and "Water To Drink". But these aren't the original versions--they're updates in a variety of styles. Some work pretty well, some will make you want to hurl (mainly Sting's take on "How Insensitive", which is droning and pointless).
Notable are: a punched-up synth-heavy "Ipanema" by one-hit-wonder Crystal Waters, jazz group Incognito on "Water To Drink", world-music-loving David Byrne and sultry Marisa Monte on "Waters Of March", the well-known Caetano Veloso and Ryuichi Sakamoto with the lesser-known Cesaria Evora on "E Preciso Perdoar", Stereolab's quirky and strange "One Note Samba", and Bebel Gilberto on "Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo".
The Red Hot series, which started with the Cole Porter tribute "Red Hot + Blue", has always done excellent work and this compilation is no exception. If you'd like to sample Brazilian pop music of a certain era but you're terrified of breaking out your dad's dusty old Jobim LPs, this is a great way to see what's what.
Also the liner notes are extensive and informative, so you really get your money's worth. I'm still not clear on the divide between samba and bossa nova, but I reckon that's my fault.
Listening Pleasure-RED HOT+RIO.......2004-03-03
Great for Jobim Fans.......2002-07-16
An excellent addition. I have most of the songs on the album on at least two other CDs, but the artists have played with the songs enough to complement the originals.

Back in 1991, when the Cordes brothers released their beautiful debut, the notoriously prickly hip-hop community had a collective fit. How dare that fat kid, who spoke in parables, call himself a rapper? Sampling Spandau Ballet? Talking all that hippie crap? The hardcore fans filed PM Dawn in the alternative section, but the open-minded embraced the dreamy soundscape without questioning its origins. If De La Soul worked with Brain Wilson, you'd be halfway to figuring out the flowing melodies and stream-of-consciousness raps (OK, Prince Be never was much of a microphone fiend) that PM Dawn unleashed. Years later this CD stands up, if only because the rest of the world has caught up to the confusion that Be felt in his troubled soul and translated into music so well. Simply lovely stuff. --Amy LindenCustomer Reviews:

That's the way it goes...I guess........2005-08-20
I got the album and it started off with "Reality Used to Be a Friend of Mine" and I was floored. This was REAL HIP HOP, it reminded me of De La Soul, except more poetic. "Amazing" is the only word to describe it.
Following was "Paper Doll", such a beautiful song. Just the way everything comes together is perfect. I actually had no clue until I bought this album that Be did all the vocals singing/rapping. What a versitile man.
Basically, every track following this IS perfect. Except "Shake"...I don't know about that one, but other than that I couldn't ask for anything more in an album. I want to say ONCE AGAIN, THIS ALBUM IS DAMN AMAZING!
I really needed something as beautiful as this album in my world at this time of my, and I thank P.M. Dawn for it.

this album is just so smooth my fav tracks are paper doll, set a drift, and even after i die, this album is verry eclectic moody.when i was younger the album would just take me away.
the album isn't reallly ground breaking but it is verry well done enough to be considered a classic.i'm glad hip-hop didn't go in the direction of PM Dawn.because honestly that would make them obsolete in a world of simuler clones.besides theres enough room for all types of rap music.theres no neeed to follow one formula

If you're tired of the aformentioned regurgitated mess that is most of PROMOTED contemporary R&B, give CR's "2:35PM" a good listen.
I copped this CD in summer '04 after seeing CR's video for "Not Like This" latenight on BET ... (incidentally, I never saw that video again).
CR's got that old school soul and sings with a deeper, more sincere vocal approach that more than compensates for the fact he's not gonna blow you away like Joe, Brian McKnight or Maxwell.
Personal favorite tracks are "I'm Worthy," "Keep on Pushin'", "More Than A Woman" and "Not Like This."
Highly recommended album for spending quality time with'cha girl or just for chilling after a long, hard and tiresome day.
A major talent.......2006-01-03
Loved the intro to "Keep On Pushing" kind of reminiscent of Sam Cooke's "A Change is Going to Come." While I believe the first song is the highlight of the album, the second song, "Fallin' Out" is also top notch. The first seven are quite good, especially "More Than a Woman" which I first heard on a couple of soundtracks ... so glad it's on this album. The CD tails off a little near the end, but finishes on a high note.
I'm glad I discovered Mr. Richardson and hope he continues to shine.

Russill Paul, a forerunner in the field of sacred sound, has studied this Hindu form of yoga (sacred sound) for the better part of two decades. Teacher, musician, and practitioner, Paul introduced the bulk of his work with the phenomenal box set The Yoga of Sound. Now teaming with the Relaxation Company on the acclaimed A.M./P.M. Yoga series, Paul offers the remarkable A.M. & P.M. Yoga Chants, which packages together A.M. Yoga Chants and P.M. Yoga Chants. A.M. Chants makes an optimal beginning to any day, gently moving the listener-participant through sluggishness and propelling her or him toward mindful awareness, vitality, and receptive productivity. Darker in sound than its A.M. sister, the time-honored chants on P.M. Yoga Chants, set to beautifully produced music, soothe and sate the listener's hunger for homing in and relating. Each disc comes with excellent liner notes detailing the origins of each piece and suggestions for yoga poses and topics for meditation. A beautiful and healthy beginning and end to every day. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:
Yoga Chants by a Master Sound Yogi Musician.......2006-08-04
I have enjoyed listening to Russill Paul's music since 2001. I've listened to the chants for pleasure, to practice mantra chanting, in preparation for meditation, for doing asanas, driving in the car, and even at the gym!
In Russill Paul's music, you will experience a fusion of Eastern and Western sounds blended to please, exemplifying some of the best music of the genre.
Russill Paul is a dedicated sound yogi who not only records wonderful CD's, but also offers first-rate retreats, teaches university courses and writes (see The Yoga of Sound by New World Library), exemplifying his commitment to his artistic craft and his generosity to share the treasures of the golden smile that lives inside music.
You can't go wrong with Paul's authentic, masterfully recorded Yoga Chants!

Not Soothing At All!.......2003-02-04
while practicing yoga or meditating. I was really looking forward to it, since I love Indian chants and sacred songs. Unfortunately, I found Paul's voice to be strange and disconcerting, the melodies were odd, and there was an atonal quality to the music that made it grating and hard to listen to. Not at all what I had hoped for either, and for this listener at least, quite difficult to relax to or practice yoga with. I wish it hadn't been so, but I agree with the other reviewer who said it wasn't what they expected. Ravi Shankar's Chants of India is a much better CD of Indian Chants with better voices to bring out the sacred aspect of the words. Paul's voice just didn't seem to fit this type of music, which is a shame, since he has been immersed in it for years. Strange
and disappointing, and not what I would expect from GAIAM, either.

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl HanniCustomer Reviews:
excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.
To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24
A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.
My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.
A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11
It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.
Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.
OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15
Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17
Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.
It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

Don't be fooled, this is REAL HIP HOP.......2005-08-20
The album starts with, "When Mightnight Sighs". The first time I listened to this song I was in the car and I found myself singing along by the time the chorus came around.
The second song "So on & so on" was basically an all singing song, but I really enjoyed this one, because the vocals were delivered very quickly.
Next comes Plastic. This is straight up hip hop. Prince Be comes with the power of Chuck D ready to tell people how he feels about the negative attention the hip hop community has given them. (that's how I saw it)
The production/music on Ways of the Wind is very beautiful. Crazy ass bassline too. I must say the production/music on this album is on point. It's close, if not as good as the first album.
Next comes, "To Love Me More". I am not a a big fan of the slow singing songs, but when they are put around a bunch of upbeat songs with rapping, it has a good balance and you appreciate them a lot more. I think this song is fun and keeps things versitile.
One of my favorites "About Nothing for the Love of Destiny". This song is great. The music is top notch and the chorus is simply amazing. The sarcasm (i hope) in the chorus is great. "I like the way you change your looks, I like the way you change your style..I like the way you talk about nothing". I LOVE the little synth SOLO. I LOVE IT!! haha.
The cover of the Beatles "Norwegian Wood" was actually pulled off reallly well. The drums are straight up boom bap. Not a big fan of covers unless they cross music boundries, and this one definately does.
"Beyond Infinite Affections" is straight up hip hop once again. I don't know how P.M. Dawn could get any backlash from the hip hop community when they make songs like this. It's better than the majority of hip hop.
"Looking through Patient Eyes" sounds like Set Adrift Part 2. heh. Nice mellow song.
"Filthy Rich, I don't wanna be". I love the lyrics in the verses, not a big fan of the chorus though.
"More than Likely" is my least favorite song on the album. It's a duet with some guy and it really sounds like he needs to CLEAR his throat. It sounds very mucas filled, at one point you can hear it try to clear itself. Eek.
"The Nocturnal is in the house". Another banging hip hop track. nuff said. Coming battle style, whatever happened to that??
"When it's Raining Cats and Dogs" not a big fan of this one.
"I'd Die Without You". I used to hate this song when I was little when it used to come on the radio. I was still in elementry school at the time. I hated all the R & B songs cuz I had to sit through them to get to some hip hop songs, and this was one of them. I had no clue it was P.M. Dawn until I bought this album. I guess I like it now proably cuz I recognize it. heh.
All in all, it's nearly as good as the first album. I still like the first a smidget better, but not by much. This album KILLS 99 percent of all albums out there.

Maybe it says something about rap's limitations that hip-hop's most creative acts move away from the form in order to expand artistically. While the Beastie Boys, head increasingly back toward hard rock, P.M. Dawn continues its course into the outer space of sonic gloss. Perhaps Jesus Wept, the duo's third album, relies on a celestial combination of airy R&B and acoustic hippie pop to float the Cordes brothers (Prince Be and J.C. the Eternal) into a higher level of consciousness than booming beats and rhythmic rhymes could take them. Or more likely, P.M. Dawn's musical evolution simply indicates these Jersey City homeboys are individuals unwilling to be limited or formatted.
Jesus Wept is, in fact, not all that different from the heady potion of English psychedelic synth pop, east coast new jack sway, and new age metaphysics the group brewed on 1993's The Bliss Album...?, only it's much more that way. Prince Be's existential voyage through his religious/spiritual identity crisis is surprisingly endearing, and songs like "The 9:45 Wake-Up Dream" and "Apathy...Superstar!?" are every bit as inventive as their titles suggest. And though the duo's typically heavy-handed production can make the mix sound more like marshmallow at times, the lush string/piano/acoustic guitar orchestrations ("Sonchyenne"), smooth dance beats ("My Own Personal Gravity"), and well-placed samples ("Downtown Venus") make Jesus Wept another exquisite slice of P.M. Dawn's gourmet auditory pastries. --Roni Sarig
