Chops- Food For Naught.......2004-01-07

Philly Producer/MC Chops delivers refreshing and creative instrumentals on "Food For Naught" (2003). This is the first instrumental album I have reviewed, and doing track description is not easy as I am used to listening to tracks which MCs rhyme over. Overall this release has alot of good tracks on this, with many different ranges, some of my favourites include:

Yallaintready- This is only track Chops rhymes over, its a good start to album and Powelton Saunders hook is nice.

Drama Lover Feat Mastery- This is sick cut, just one of those relaxed tracks for the late night.

Herbal Verbalette- Another standout, this beat has a sad feel to it, love the melody in this track.

Nowhere to Run- Similar to the last track I mentioned, this one also uses a sad piano beat, cept this cut goes deeper.

Song For Latonya [Smiling Out Loud] feat. The Jam Cross Combo - upbeat, feel good track.

Smooth Assasin feat. CMNR & DJ Kwestion of the Skratch Makaniks-Memorable closing cut, CMNR fastpaced rhymes work well over this.

This is a solid release, and Chops is a talented up and coming beatmaker. He is also 1/3 of the Mountain Brothers a Asian American Hip Hop group. I am looking forward to Chop's next album "Virtuosity" which is coming out at the end of January and will feature established rappers like Raekwon, Ras Kass, Talib Kweli and Producer/MC Kayne West.
