The Mixologists are right up there with the Scratch Perverts for success as a turntablist crew. In 1997, DJ Go wanted to bring together a group of like-minded DJs and thus formed The Mixologists with Beni G. Together, this stellar team came in second at the DMC World Finals. The pair has also attracted sponsorship from Nike, Shure and Vestax. These two turntable wizards have compiled Champion Sounds with love and care. The Mixologists seamlessly merge hip-hop from both sides of the Atlantic with drum n bass. The album features names like Sean Paul, Method Man and Redman, J Majik, Ms. Dynamite, Hype, The Streets and Un-cut.

Beni G was the tour DJ for Mark B & Blade, performing alongside the likes of Eminem, Stereo MCs and Feeder.

Excelsior takes the time to minister into the future of their audience with songs like "It's My Time", and the encouraging "Crossing Over Jordan". F. Darnel Davis is back and pens ten of the eleven songs on this album, continuing to write songs that bless the masses and span the spectrum of Gospel music. Check out the churchy "Don't You Give Up", led by Brenda Hunter. Speaking of leads, the ever-energetic David Hurst also returns to add his trademark vocals to "It Shall Come To Pass" and also the barn-burning "We Made It". The worship vibe is genuine and heartfelt ("You Are" and "Song of Worship"), and Demarcus Greene takes it to another place with "Awesome". Don't miss the guest lead from Bishop Neal Roberson on "If It Wasn't For You". Add in the bonus rendition of "The First Noel" and The Promise is another success story for Excelsior. Grabbing you from start to finish, and growing on you with repeat listens, this is a project that won't let you go. Call it a promise that doesn't disappoint.

I remember seeing an ad in Gospel Today years ago for God @ Work. I am a choir fan, so I thought oooohh a new choir. Spending most of my K-12 and college years in choral ensembles and as a Music minor, I have knowledge about what diction and good vowels are, tone, etc.

The Promise is a pretty good CD. I had trouble understanding what the choir was singing sometimes. If the lyrics were not included, I would have been lost. It seems to be that way on all of Excelsior's CD's. For example, when I first heard It's My Time, it took me a couple of listens to understand some of the vamp...I'm ready for a blessing. To me, it's as if the choir sacrifices tone and diction, for a "big sound". It is possible to achieve a "big sound" while yet singing clearly. I am in no way comparing; however, Ricky Dillard & New G and the last Youthful Praise CD are good examples. The choirs achieve a big sound, but have clear diction.

My favorites include You Are, Don't You Give Up, Song of Worship, and Awesome. The First Noel does not sound good. :( If I'm not mistaken, the arrangement is actually for choral ensembles (i.e. - high school/ university choirs, SATB, etc. you get the picture). If the whole song is not a choral arrangement, the vamp sounds like it's from a choral piece. Excelsior calls themselves a choral ensemble, but they did not do justice to this song. It's rough around the edges. I guess maybe too gospelly, even though that's not a word. A Classical sound or better diction would have helped.

I like Excelsior but they should work on a few things. They have a new CD coming out called "In His Hands." Hopefully this will be a better CD.

I found this album to be truly uplifting. George Foreman has touched a chord and the use of the different performers, along with George's excellent voice, is outstanding. This album will make a difference for many who buy it. I consider it to be excellent!

This is a great cd in words, horrible in singing. This guy's like Paul McCartney. His painting a bunch of buckets of paint on a wall. This guy's music is a bunch of noise mixed into this thing that makes rap sound like gospel music. He stinks at boxing, cooking (just look at the guy), and everything else! This is a failiure of a sellout. If you think this is the chef of all time, get this cd.

Strong first release.......2005-09-27

This is the first Mixologists album released to the general public. However, the Mixologists have a somewhat old and extremely successful history by winning (or being on the top 3) of multiple DJ battles and championships in Europe since they originally formed in 1997.

Before they released Champion Sounds in late 2003. DJ Go and Benny G (Mixologists) released a CD "Flip the Script" on Knowledge magazine's March 2003 issue. That CD is a must-get five-star CD. Similar to this one but with more melodic tracks combining excellent hip-hop with classic drum and bass. In addition, Flip the Script, introduces the jungle drummer and MC trip.

Don't get me wrong. This CD is worth buying to understand what the Mixologists are all about but if you like this, you need to get a copy of Flip the Script and you will be extremely satisfied. You maybe able to find it in the web or by subscribing to Knowledge magazine and ordering past issues.
