One-man show Dwele's debut, Subject, comes correct with neo-soul staples in place. That is to say, there are enough acoustic guitars, stacked harmony vocals, mid-tempo grooves, and sound effects of scratchy vinyl to power an old-school symposium. What the Detroit-bred associate of backpack-rappers Slum Village lacks in depth, he makes up for in sheer summer-ready listenability. Dwele's genre could be called neo-neo-soul; he seems to owe as much to the foundations laid down by D'Angelo as to obvious idol Stevie Wonder. While lacking the idiosyncrasies of those artists, Dwele manages to slide out of the speakers with enough skills to convince a casual listener to let the languid mood take over. Subject's title track is its most fully imagined; the needle-on-record gambit that obscures its likable chorus could actually be heard as a conceptual gambit rather than a mere irritation. Elsewhere, Dwele piles on the quiet-storm stuff so masterfully that he sows confusion, while at least seemingly hoping to settle down with one conquest. Vision is hardly up to talent here, but for now, Dwele gets a pass on winning sonics alone. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Back In Form.......2000-07-17
Yes, another group has risen out of the ashes to reclaim their territory. This is a wonderful time to be making music. The world has never been more open to new and different sounds. Although this sound is not new and familiar to some, it never really got the recognition and opportunity that its now experiencing. There is no one that deserves the accolades and fame more than the guys that were there in the beginning.
Listen up all you youngsters out there, want to play surf-instro the way it was meant to be played? The Vara-Tones hold a clinic for eager ears that are willing to learn. They have successfully re-ignited their original sound with the help of today's technologies and equipment. The base sound is still there, it just has a little more oomph now (as Phil Dirt says). The original hit "Repeto" (1964), has been given a shot of new life with an upbeat rockin' flavor and a new title, "Repeto 2000." You get the best of both worlds, as the group plays the original as well the updated version. Speaking of the best of both worlds...When many original surf groups reform and make their music combined with today's sound, it comes out sounding so much stronger, with a new fullness and freshness to it. What was once a mere ripple from a recording standpoint, is now a Tsunami headed your way to give you the ride of your life. It all sounds that much better now because of the enhanced and improved sound quality and sonics.
The latin, island flavored tunes are immensely effective. "El Sereno" and "Midnight In Mazatlan", are as picturesque and inviting as the beaches that are envisioned inside your head while listening. Welcome back Vera-Tones. The surf-instro community needs more groups like you to reform and to remind people from whence they came.
Fair warning- if you have a surfboard in hand, and if this music is played loud, the jetty is subject to high surf.

While Switched fit neatly in with the nu-metal milieu, they are a bit left of center, and put a unique stamp on the 11 discrete and heady songs on their major-label debut. Much of the credit goes to Ben Schigel's dramatic vocals, which range easily and well from melodious to irate. While some songs are intense yet melodic rock like a more soaring Nickelback ("Inside"), other aural offerings are more metallic, like the furious "Exterminate," which nearly does Slayer proud. Then there are moments that recall Linkin Park and conjure up dark rock roots, while the intense layers of sound and powerful musicianship on songs like "Darkening Days" and "10 Dead Fingers" add almost a modern-cool progressive musical tinge, also evidenced on the System of a Down-meets-King's X "Anymore." With Subject to Change, this Ohio-bred five-piece proves that Cleveland does indeed rock, and hard, too. --Katherine TurmanCustomer Reviews:

"Alter" is no different. I really had been looking forward to this release and really wanted to love it, but I was sadly dissapointed. Although some of the tracks are fun, the majority of the album seems like filler to bridge the gaps between solid tracks with mediocrity. There are two or three tsongs on this CD that seem like they were written in about 20 minutes.
Floater will always remain one of the most unique and enjoyable bands I have ever experienced, but I don't recommend "Alter" to even the most rabid fan.

WHERE STORM LEFT OFF.........2003-09-29
Once again, she weds a dizzying array of synthesized and generated sounds with violin playing of great warmth and dazzling virtousity. Expect beat-driven songs that combine her spiffy ability at the strings with various subgenres, as well as softer, more introspective pieces. The arrangements are classy as usual, and together with the well produced combinational elements, make for an entertaining album.
Caveat: it may get a little monotonous, but if you enjoyed Storm you will likely find something on Subject To Change to keep you interested.
Violin music on steroids.......2002-01-17
Pros:
* The album is full of energy and catchy and simple tunes.
* It is rare to see such a packed album (65 minutes) these days.
* The tracks "Destiny" and "Laughing Buddha" are like "Red Hot", Mae's signature tune, on steroids. The album is worth its price for these two tracks; the rest is just a bonus.
Cons:
* Vanessa Mae still thinks that when she sings in French, it will sound nicer. Among all those high-energy tracks, her singing feels a little out of place.
* The import version is a little pricey; you may want to wait for the US release.
Overall, Vanessa Mae has proven with her third pop album that she is here to stay, so get used to it.
some good stuff in it........2001-12-07
The songs with vocals were more outstanding, particularly White Bird. Though the lyrics themself seemed a bit cliched at times (ok i'm not much of a literary critic so maybe you others might not feel the same) i like the song and her style. The other tracks with vocals were quite nice too even though i don't understand the language. I found track 10 and 12 really sexy and fun. V-Mae's voice isnt that great, but like I said, she has her own distinct style and it's worth listening. That's why i gave this cd 3 stars.
Oh yeah, the excessive photos of her in the booklet inside really put me off. Call me a prude or whatever: What is she selling? Her music or her looks? It reminds me way too much of boybands plastering their faces all over posters and magazines in order to attract fans. C'mon V-Mae, you don't need that. What we want from you is your _music_ not your pretty pictures.

I have become less than a man.......2005-11-24
The Reverend has always had great lyrics, even if they have frequently been nearly indecipherable; thankfully, this time they're included in the booklet. Thematically, this is actually a much more unified record than its predecessor: nearly all the songs are first-person narratives delivered by people who are horribly, cripplingly damaged-physically, mentally, spiritually, or, more often, some combination. Hence, the album's title: Our Lady being presumably their patron saint. They desperately struggle to escape their burdens, but-naturally-their efforts are inevitably doomed.
Take "Mother Is a Carpegian." The narrator rails against, and exacts horrible revenge on, a man who has seduced (or that he imagines might seduce) his daughter, as he exhibits a strange fascination with genetics: "I've got a daughter and she looks like me/well she oughta, she's got half of my genes." This is one seriously deranged individual; the song would be good enough as it is, but then at the end we queasily come to realize that the narrator's concern for his daughter is not entirely paternal in nature. It's deadly effective, and illustrates the band's increasing lyrical sophistication.
Or look at "The Cold House Hymns," which is pure coal-black Southern Gothic. It begins with the narrator at his birth praying to be able to exact violent Old Testament retribution on his parents: "Let my small hands grow stronger so I may hammer away your wrongs;" and ends with him setting fire to the house in question in an effort at achieving transcendence via immolation: "There's a fire! There's a fire in the cold house!/Planks rustle, the windows they crack/The Lord, the Lord bequeathed me a gift/I beg my master to take it back." Quite potent. Or my favorite, the wonderfully-titled "God Help You Dumb Boy," in which he rages futilely against his own impotence: "But I can't load the bullets and I can't use a gun/I can't have no children so I can't have a son/I can't get up early, so nothing will grow/I'll lay on my land `til the Sun hangs low/'til the sun hangs low." It evokes to me the same sense of apocalyptic, eschatological allegory as did "3 Ton Chain" from BRF.
This is just skimming the surface, of course. Some songs are a bit weaker than others, but overall, this is a dense and fascinating album. Let's hope we don't have to wait another four years for the next one.

Aldo Nova - Subject.......2006-05-10
Canada's answer to Tony MacAlpine.......2006-03-09
Aldo Nova released 5 excellent albums (Aldo Nova in 1982; Subject: Aldo Nova in 1983; Twitch in 1985; Blood On The Bricks in 1991; and Nova's Dream in 1997). I love all of them, but Subject is my personal favorite. He is one of the great guitarists and a darn good singer. He has also played bass, keyboards, and drum / percussion machines on many of his songs (alongside some studio guests). This guy is a VERSATILE musician (reminds me of Tony MacAlpine, who has exhibited great mastery for both keyboards and guitars as has Aldo Nova).
Subject begins with the instrumental trio of Subject's Theme, Armageddon (Race Cars), and Armageddon. Some cool keyboards in the beginning, followed by motor-sound reminescent of a day at the auto races, and then BOOM!! - the fast-paced Armageddon kicks in with some of Aldo Nova's most memorable fretwork.
"Monkey On Your Back" was the first song here to recieve much airplay on the heavy rock radio stations. Lyrically it takes on an anti-heroin abuse theme. It's a memorable, heavy guitar riff with some interesting voice synthesizer accompaniment and more memorable guitar soloing. Probably my personal favorite from Subject. "Always Be Mine" was the other single released from Subject - a more commercially friendly tune than the former.
"Hey Operator" and "Cry Baby Cry" are two fast-paced rockers heavy laden with keyboard work, and the latter has yet another very memorable guitar solo. "All Night Long" is another fast-pace roker with some heavy keyboard emphasis. All of these are as good as anything that came from Aldo's debut release.
"Victim Of A Broken Heart is a ballad, as is "Paradise" that finishes off the record. I do like both of those songs, although I think Aldo Nova's best ballad was to follow on his next release, "Surrender Your Heart" from TWITCH.
"Africa (Primal Love)" has Aldo Nova making some interesting animal sounds with his guitar (Van Halen fans have listened to Eddie to the same thing also) accompanied with some tribal-sounding beats on the drums and atmospheric keyboards. "Always Be Mine" and "Hold Back The Night" are very melodic tracks. Reminds me of the likes Dokken and maybe the Scorpions.
It's too bad that only Aldo Nova's debut CD is still in print, as he had a LOT to offer the hard rock community with his other release that are even better. Most of his out-of-print stuff is now rare and very difficult to find, and some of those CD's can be quite pricey (at this writing, I've seen Subject sell for over $50 and Nova's Dream sell for almost $90!). So if you can grad those CD's cheap, do it FAST!! Aldo Nova is nowadays writing songs for other artists like Celine Dion, and I've not heard anything in YEARS to indicate he will be releasing more solo recordings.
(Incidentally, his real name is Aldo Caporuscio.)
Nova's masterpiece.......2005-06-15
Aldo Nova was a guitar god - no questions asked. Although pretty much forgotten in this modern age due to his retirement and changing musical trends, those who do discover his music will not deny that it is an excellent sound no one else ever had or ever will. His 1982 debut spawned Fantasy, an AOR staple that gets heavy radio play, even to this day - it's just a shame it would be his only really big hit. Later releases of his wouldn't get the same hype, sadly. His second album, Subject... Aldo Nova, arrived in 1983. Read on for my review.
I wasn't expecting Aldo Nova's sophomore album to top his debut - I'd heard it was awkwardly progressive and Nova's sophomore jinx. I'd also heard it didn't top the debut. None of that crap was true. THIS IS ALDO NOVA'S ULTIMATE ALBUM. The album is progressive, melodic, and hard rocking - three things I LOVE from rock albums. The sound here is, in my opinion, a better one than the one Nova used on his debut (and that's saying a lot since I LOVED his debut!) Rather than Loverboy-esque hard pop rock, Nova's sophomore album opts for a melodic heavy sound - one that he would never top in my personal opinion. There are a lot of brief instrumentals on this album, and every one of them showcases Nova's guitar virtuoso skills. This is one of those albums that's tough to put into words - experiencing it for yourself is the best way to get an opinion for it. Admittingly, it's possible you'll like Nova's first album more than this one (it's the one most people remember him for), so I recommend buying that one first, and if you want to beyond the debut, buy Subject. More likely than not, you won't regret it.
Sadly, all of Aldo Nova's albums are long out of print, with the lone exception of his recently-reissued self-titled debut. Hopefully his entire catalogue will get the same treatment the debut album did, since that isn't his ONLY good album. If you want to get Subject... in the meantime, you're likely gonna have to order it or find a used copy.
Subject... Aldo Nova RULES. Aldo Nova's debut was a masterpiece, but this is (in my opinion) a superior album! I really think Nova found a sound all his own with this release (while I loved the debut album, I did find it to be a bit cheesy at times (not that that's a bad thing) and too similar to Loverboy at places.) I give this album my strongest recommendation, but only after you've heard Nova's debut. THIS is the best Aldo Nova album, but you'll appreciate it more if you here his first album first.
DIE HARD ALDO NOVA FAN.......2004-10-15
I FOUND "SUBJECT" TO BE RATHER INTERESTING. DELIGHTFULLY DIFFERENT. ALL THE TRACKS WERE PUT TOGETHER VERY INTELLEGENTLY. ALL THE SONGS BLEND TOGETHER BEAUTIFULLY.
ALDO NOVA IS BY FAR A MUSICAL GENUIS!
Maybe you had to be there..........2004-08-01
And even though the follow-up single/video, "Ball And Chain" was pretty good, you wondered just what this guy was capable of; he had already proved that he COULD BE Canada's Paul McCartney (at least in the sense that he could play all required instruments and perform all necessary vocals on a successful debut album).
"Subject...", sadly out-of-print as of this writing, proves that indeed the potential was there. This early Bon Jovi protege' (see the liner notes for the "Bon Jovi" debut CD) proves that he was indeed a force to be reckoned with regarding the atmosphere in which the early 1980's recording industry was leading...hey, if Loverboy and April Wine could score gold and platinum records Stateside, why not a guy who could write, arrange, and perform most (if not all) the musical/vocal parts on a single album?
Possibly because Aldo tried to follow mid-'70's Canadian rock gods Rush into the realm of AOR success via the pretentious route of the "concept album"...always a dangerous trek for those better suited for the pop/rock genre...and unfortunately, Aldo found that the people who REALLY dug his debut album and those who loved Pink Floyd or Rush weren't exactly the same peer group.
Nonetheless, this album was received warmly enough so that Aldo was given the sandwich position in a North American tour with Blue Oyster Cult (headliners, obviously) and German heavy metal up-&-comers Accept (of "Balls To The Wall" fame).
Things looked good...it was a great tour (I saw it with primo seats), but for some reason the USA music press never caught on. Maybe Aldo Nova was lost under the radar. If so, that's a d@mn shame...because this guy is a musician's musician.
Anyway, this is a rather ambitious project for a guy releasing only (at the time) his 2nd album on a major label...and it is possible the label got cold feet at the prospect of releasing it...but the truth is there are a number of radio friendly songs on this album...see "Monkey On Your Back", "Hey Operator", "Victim Of A Broken Heart", "Always Be Mine", and "All Night Long".
Sequenced between those tracks are a number of "experimental" songs that give this album the degree of "what the f#$& was he thinking?" license that doom most prog-rock offerings to lore and legend...but the truth is that compared to both earlier and later releases, Aldo Nova was trying to get the most out of art for the sake of art itself. Whether this means anything coming from a guy with a mullet at the time is for history to decide...but the truth is that this an ambitious album that may well have been let down by its label...and the success of other video-oriented bands at the time.
For fans of early-'80's pop/rock, this is required listening. For people who wonder if Aldo Nova ever recorded anything after "Fantasy", prepare to be completely blown away. Find this one at all cost.
