2 out of 5 stars He Barely Made A Name For Himself...Thats It (2.5 Stars).......2006-06-21

Although David Banner would think to provide an alternative to the southern crunk music that was playing consistantly in summer of 2003, his debut album Mississippi: The Album would also fail with dissapointing results.

David Banner proves that he has rhymes unlike many southern rappers and can produce a high quality. What holds this down is the horrible guests that inhabit this album. Everybody comes off weak and horrible on the tracks they appear in. Starting with the misleading lead single "Like A Pimp" featuring Lil Flip saying some horrible more slapped together rhymes "...cuz we run trains Choo Choo! all night/ how could your gal leave me and be with you all night..." It's okay, because hes one the best one on the entire album. The track "F 'Em" sounds like a reject song from a Lil Jon album. "Bring It On" and "Really Don't Wanna Go" is just wack, plain and simple. Halfass singing by Ax on "Fast Life" doesn't make the situation any better.

David Banner himself also drags down the album on whatever few solo songs he has. Somewhere in his mind, he thought he can sing the hook on "Cadallac On 22's" and "Fire Falling" with a scratchy soft voice, which comes off horrible.

There is some good to this album though. David Banner does a decent job on "So Trill" and "Mississippi". Guest wise works on "My Shawty" featuring vocals from Fiend over a slow beat. "Choose Me" was good by Sky, but it's shadowed by medicore rapping by David Banner.

Overall, a medicore start by David Banner. Production wise is great, but the horrible rhymes by most guests drag this down. Luckly the next two albums he found some better guests and stepped things up. Pick those albums up to occupy your time, and skip this one.

Credit David Banner for his production skills. I've heard the man speak several times and he really is a deep, intelligent, socially aware and farely articulate dude.

But like Kanye West, natural flow and smooth delivery just aren't his selling points.

"Cadillac on 22s" has interesting rhymes (on paper) but I'd say it's just an okay song.

I also liked the "Like a Pimp" single with Lil Flip as well as the crunk remix with Twista and Busta Rhymez.

I give this album 2-stars based on those singles alone.

I reviewed this LP at a music store just based off curiosity of having heard the brotha speak and thinking he might have something to say on this album.

Otherwise, like previous reviewers said, if you actually raced out to cop this album it's either because you have no sense of good/great hip hop music, you from Mississippi and were trying to hold it down or you just ain't up on good Southern hip hop music.

DB has a place in the hip hop world, it's just not on the mic if you ask me.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-04-08

This album is the rawest one of those best in your face conscious album like the etc. great album's P.E.(Fear of a Black Planet)and ICE CUBE(Amerikka Most Wanted). U know what's mess up is that it's southern so even some blacks can't relate to this album for example;people from New York which probably can relate more to an metropolitan white than their southern roots being ashame of the country life style. David Banner did alot of chin checking of this in his first debut mainstream album stated things of how the third generation of blacks move away and just forgotten about there roots. Banner didn't sugar coat nothing spoke the truth without sounding so preachy and gave the youngster the people who like to club songs where they can jam too. This album might not be the most lyrical by an artist but every song was a hit from hit not water down like an industry album made by Nelly or Jadakiss album's (Kiss the Game Goodbye) but a raw underground album. Man the industry these days sucks it's all about units so this could be the last time you will hear an album from David Banner that is so pure.

4 out of 5 stars Not what everyone else thinks.......2005-12-12

I first bought this album because of one specific song - Cadillac on 22's. After hearing that, actually tryin to understand it, its got a deep meaning to it. Makes me respect it much more than the rest of the garbage coming out by lil jon and the likes. In fact, that's what makes this album so bad, the attempt at making that type of 'crunk' music. "F*** em" has to be the absolute worst song I've ever heard. Ever. It's just plain horrible. That's what makes this thing 4 instead of 5 stars. Other stuff like "my shawty", "mississippi", "so trill" are more about real life than this other trash out there. Banner doesn't make any references to carryin his "AK" or all that (which we know, lil jon relies on his bodyguards for protection and most likely has never touched a gun), so most of his songs are more "real" to life. As for "like a pimp", it's the 'star' of the album, not really my favorite, but still a good song. "choose me" is a pretty good song, has a good beat to it, not too much of the "YEAH! OKAY!" stuff with it - which unfortunately appears on "might getcha". I'd recommend it if you can appreciate rap music that's not about "shooting n***as" and everything that doesn't even happen in the life of most of those rappers.

3 out of 5 stars A bit dissapointing.......2005-10-07

Well this album is alright and i like david banner as an artist n all that but not to sound like a hater but this album is kinda weak, lyk this album is probably worth it entirely for the song like a pimp which is jus awesome but with the exception of that "might get cha" and "fu*k em" this album has no other really good songs and i was hoping for better. I reccomend this album if you are a big fan of crunk rap and like the song like a pimp alot if u only think like a pimp is an ok song then my advice would be dont bother.

Product Description

Dont let the cover fool you. This aint no Redbone, this aint no Willie Nelson (good though those two artists may be). Link Wrays Polydor debut from 1971 sounds kinda like The Band meets The Rolling Stones, with a healthy side of Van Morrison playing gospel blues somewhere in the Mississippi Delta. Recorded in his converted chicken coop studio, Wray took a breather from his earlier electric guitar instrumentals to lay down a raw and intense album. If you are unfamiliar with Wrays work, he is probably best known for his 1958 hit Rumble. Though it only got to #16 on the charts, its influence is staggering. The late critic Cub Koda said that Wray invented the power chord. Pete Townshend of the Who said that he probably would never have picked up a guitar had it not been for the tune. Much of his early work from the Fifties may seem pretty tame now, but he was breaking ground for the likes of Dick Dale and a whole crop of guitarists that would come during the British Invasion, such as Clapton, Beck, and Page, all of whom have paid homage to Wrays talent. By most accounts, Link turned 75 this year (though it might be 73 or 68, depending on what you read), and hes about as far as one can be from the rock mainstream: Denmark. He moved there in 1978, and lives on an island where Hans Christian Andersen once made his home. And though his life has been far from a fairytale, Wray still manages to get out on the road from time to time, showing the kids how its done, comfortable in his status as one of the pioneers of rock. The album was remastered from the original master tapes in 2004 by the Grammy-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen, and it comes in a die-cut gatefold package that replicates the original vinyl release.

This is a great album but do yourself a favor and buy Link Wray's album Wray's Three Track Shack. This album along with two others (Beans and Backfat and Mordicai Jones)are all collected on Wray's Three Track Shack. All three albums are fairly hard to find and can get costly so do yourself a favor and buy Wray's Three Track Shack, it's well worth the money.

Excruciating. Ray Brown is one of my all-time heroes but even he can't redeem this appalling travesty. Kiri Te Kanawa should be prevented from ever attempting this repertiore again by any means necessary.

If you want a good example of how great jazz with a singer can be, buy "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman" or Charlie Haden "The Art of Song" instead.

5 out of 5 stars "A lesson in laid back CLASS".......2004-10-14

Here is the most beautiful rendition of "Never Was You" ever with the restrained vocal purity of Kiri and the awesome chords of Andre's piano...a real gem. Ray Brown and Mundell also contribute their world-class talents to this unique UNPRESSURED album. A treasure that will please music lovers for many years. GRAB IT WHILE YOU CAN!

5 out of 5 stars Kiri does it again!.......2004-04-26

Wonderful! As is everything the inimitable Kiri does. No, she does not sound like other jazz singers but adds the Kiri touch that has made her one of the most listened to of all performers, whether of opera or jazz. This CD made my ears very happy. I'd advised the disgruntled writer to hold on to her CD--there is only one available on the entire internet and the seller is asking for $75.00. An unmistakable message--it appears that Kiri lovers don't want to part with Kiri CDs. Also advise other viewers to get the VHS from which this CD was made. Inexpensive now but it'll not be for long. It's called Kiri & Andre: The making of Sidetracks. It has the best closeups of Kiri that I've ever seen and shows what a happy-go-lucky gal she is. Also recommend her Kiri! on VHS (her 50th Birthday Concert) It is one of the best musical recitals ever made--period. Sorry, the price is out of sight.

Even I heard the first David Banner screwed and chopped cd is,
Mississippi: The Screwed and Chopped Album is still out the chain, I am going get crunk on the screwed and chopped cd done by DJ Michael "5000" Watts for Swishahouse, being screwing and chopping up on the David Banner - Mississippi: The Screwed and Chopped Remix Cd.

5 out of 5 stars straight fie!.......2004-03-08

damn these commercial fools not knowing bout that chopped screwed style!! mississippi is a fire cd!!! chopped and screwed version takes it to that next level mane!!! fans of screw & banner you want this NOW!!!

1 out of 5 stars Buy the original.......2004-03-02

David Banner's Mississippi is a great album. Please buy the original. The Screwed and Chopped sounds like the original album on the wrong speed. I could have made this on my pc. It's just the original album slowed down with repeated lyrics. It's total crap.

4 out of 5 stars the screwed and chopped version?.......2004-02-02

David Banner is great. I had heard the whole album. But when i saw this was 5 dollars less than the regular one. I bought it thinking it would be remixes of the songs. When I put it in my CD player,I got a suprise. It was slowed down making David Banner have a low voice, and certain parts would repeat thereselves.I like the regular album better. But this is OK and you get used to it after a while. But if you want the real david banner, get the regular Mississippi: the album.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than The Original.......2004-01-06

As a new fan of the "screwed-up" style (my introduction was 8 Ball & MJG's "Space Age 4 Eva," also done by Michael Watts of Swisha House & also excellent), this album blew me away. Having heard the "regular" version, I found this version to be superior in almost every way. David Banner's an OK MC, but not amazing, and his production is the same -- but whoa, when you slow it down & chop it up, "Mississippi" becomes AMAZING. The screwed & chopped version of "Choose Me" is so good, it makes "Hey Ya" sound like MC Hammer scraping dog-doo off the sole of his Reebok. Definitely check this album out as a great introduction to the DJ Screw style (RIP) & as an example of how hip-hop's limitless creativity & inventive nature strike again.

Archie Brownlee was probably the greatest singer I have ever heard. His range is incredible and fans of soul as well as Gospel will appreciate this CD. It is only sad that we don't have more of his music available with this sound quality. It's the closest thing to hearing them in person - that must have been an emotional knockout. This collection shows his spontaneous genius at its best.
