Just one omission.......2001-02-02

There is another recording of "Goodbye" by N.Melba on Victor 95012,released in the US in 1905.I wonder why it is not included in this "complete" Romophone release?

Prima Donna Assoluta.......1999-11-29

Just how much Nellie Melba can one take at one sitting? Judging by this set an awful lot and that is no mean achievement given the unflattering recording, and Melba's maddening habit of recording an aria again and again. Melba's singing lacks charm - judging from contemporary reports the lady could boast little of this anyway. But it has an astonishing technique, a limpid and glorious tone, and at times some indefinable but terribly moving quality. A great, great singer - in fact for my money marginally the best on record.

In a class by herself.......1999-11-23

Melba achieves perfection more often than any other singer (with the exception of Pol Plancon). Her phrases, her high notes, her ritardandi are beyond conventional emotion and beauty. There is something almost otherworldly in her best moments. In the grand Puccini arias, she seems at first too cool, too controlled. But you soon notice her supreme artistry as well as the fire, the sheer physical force just beneath the utterly smooth surface. In fact, she is sometimes more explosive, more dramatic, than the great Callas herself. And she gives so much of herself! In the Boheme arias, her generosity is perhaps most apparent. In marveling at one perfect top note after another, one almost does not realize how cohesive she can make the pieces seem, how architectural and intelligent her approach is.

Only One Melba.......1999-02-12

That was certainly Dame Nellie's assessment of herself, and she must have been something. Yes, both Peach Melba and Melba toast are named after her, and yes, she was worshipped. Even such a curmudgeon as Bernard Shaw could appreciate her greatness. Puccini praised the fact that she sang HIS music, not "Melba-Puccini." So why, then, do her recordings not reveal to us the scope of her artistry? Granted, we can marvel at the technical accomplishments (listen, for example, to the "Hamlet" mad scene, or "Sweet Bird") and occasionally catch a phrase that makes us understand what she was about, but she lacks the grandeur and opulence of Ponselle, or the tender vulnerability of Galli-Curci. It may be that Melba was, after all, an artist of the theatre, and that the cramped, primitive conditions of early recording studios simply did not inspire her to her greatest work. However, for devotees of Golden Age voices, this Romophone set is indispensible. The transfers are masterfully done, so that even those allergic to the acoustic sound of early recordings will not be bothered.

SPRING SINGLE OFFERS GREAT PROMISE.......2000-05-02

(taken from britpopmusic-dot-com) Scott Morriss and crew may still be enjoying epic tequila benders, but the feel of New Millennium Bluetones is sheer English properness. The opening strains of the track are of a haunting brass band, the same one your grandfather played with in the town square, and continues to offer surprises with unpredictable arrangements and gorgeous textures. In addition to everything you would expect from the greatest Bluetones song ever, "Home Fires" also features a xylophone and a throw back to the James Bond theme song. Morriss's voice may sound even more tender than usual, but the incredibly beautiful melody of this song is the perfect stage to feature his talent. Former producer, Hugh Jones (The Trash Can Sinatras, Shack), passes the wand to John Cornfield (Supergrass) and the band doesn't miss a beat. Let's face it, The Bluetones make great records. If "Keep The Home Fires Burning" is an accurate sign of what's to come, something very special is on the horizon.

Ist track better than the "original".......2002-05-07

Is it just me, or is the 1st track on this CD single "Home & Dry" (Ambient Mix) better than the original album mix? I LOVE it! It sounds like a MOBY song in the background (his mellow stuff). In fact it reminded me of an old B-side of the PSB, the Moby remix of the track "Miserablism" (hard to find, but worth it). Same thing - I hated the original (you can find it on the PSB album, Alternative) - but the Moby remix is cool, beutiful chill-out, with snippets of Neil's vocals wafting in & out.

Buy this for the 1st track - the Break 4 Love remixes are horrible.

Sweet A-Side with an Excellent B-Side bonus.......2002-04-17

This British import CD-single features the latest single from this fantastic duo. "Home and Dry" is an excellent pop song with sweet lyrics. You'll be humming it in the shower after a few listens. However, I think the real standout in this collection is "Sexy Northerner." I love the pulsating dance groove, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and wicked riffs from Johnny Marr. "Always" is a down-tempo song - not terribly interesting in my humble opinion. On the whole, this is a nice CD single for the compulsive Pet Shop Boys collector type, like myself.

Second "Home and Dry" CD.......2002-03-31

This CD is the second of the two-part set for "Home and Dry," the first single off the PSB's new full-length CD, "Release." "Home and Dry" is a bit of an unusual single for the PSB, as it is a fairly straight-ahead love song. However, it is a teriffic song and quite beautiful. The ambient remix of "Home and Dry" is included here. It sounds great, but doesn't really stretch the original single much. It would have been great to have gotten some additional remixes of the song. Of course "Home and Dry" is more of a mid-tempo song, so doing disco-type remixes of it may not work well, but it still would have been great to hear some of them.

In addition, two versions of their recent #1 dance song, "Break 4 Love," are included. This song was recorded with Peter Rauhofer as "The Collaboration." The UK edit and a remix (Friburn & Urik Hi Pass Mix) are included. The song sounds great, but both versions were already available on the Break 4 Love CD set. Overall, a very good CD, but not up to the usually high standards of the PSB, who typically include a plethora of b-sides and remixes on their CD singles.
