1_Armageddon Suite - 10/10 - Main theme. Melody cycled by acoustic guitars, distorted guitars, synth and strings. Beautifully magnificent.
2_Harry & Grace Make Peace - 9/10 quiet and serene, main theme is played by acoustic guitars with background strings. Beautiful.
3_AJ's Return - 8/10 Upbeat cues, Strong synth, percussion.
4_Oil Rig - 7/10 this track has some sort of old west cues done in a rock-eske mood. Lots of harmonica appearances. Very different from the rest of the score.
5_Leaving - 8/10 This track catches my attention not only because of the cool main theme making another appearance, but because of the quality of the strings. It may be that Trevor is mixing real strings with synth ones. Very nice.
6_Evacuation - 6/10 - This is a mix of dramatic cues, nothing linear.
7_Harry Arrives At Nasa 7/10 - nothing radically different here..
8_Back In Business - 8/10 - some nice blends of climax here.
9_Launch - 10/10 - A strong track, climax, melodic cues slowly presented, there a re a couple of new melodic bridges, magnificent end.
10_5 Words - 10/10 short track but very cool.
11_Underwater Simulation - 7/10 - smooth track, new cues, slowly reaching.
12_Finding Grace - 7/10 - old west theme reappearing, not a personal favorite but very well done.
13_Armadillo - 6/10 - old west theme again.
14_Short Straw - 7/10 - not bad but more of a drama filler, the melodic cues aren't given much freedom here.
15_Demands - 8/10 a nice change, cool bass and piano duo.
16_Death Of Mir - 7/10 - drama scene, a lot of synth drums, mixed cues.
17_Armageddon Piano - 9/10 - beautiful piano theme, I would give it 10/10 if it were longer!
18_Long Distance Goodbye / Landing - 9/10 - some beautiful images drawn here by strings and clean guitars on the first half of the track. Then follows the grand finale with a few newly done cues. Very nice climax for an end.
Overall this album is a must-have for anyone that likes movie scores. I've heard some of these tracks being used in hispanic series and live shows, which is just an indication of how appealing they are. Great work from Trevor Rabin.

There was a time when Aerosmith was a great rock band. I don't know,it's just not as balanced as it could have been
for starters,opening the album with a ballad is not a way to jump out of the gate (a better start off song would have been Jon Bon Jovi's 'Mister Big Time') now don't get me wrong,'I Don't Want To Miss A Thing' is a beautiful masterpiece by my favorite songwriter of all time Diane Warren,it just should have been towards the middle or end of the CD
then we have Journey's track 'Remember Me' which is a great song and well done,I just really miss Steve Perry being with them,no offense to the new singer Steve Auger who is very talented,it's just not fair to call them Journey in my opinion...from there is in my opinion one of the highlights of the album 'What Kind of Love Are You On' by Aerosmith,it rocks from start to finish,a great song all around...from there ZZ Top's classic 'La Grange' perhaps I've just heard the song way too many times,I always skip this one when I listen (nothing personal),'Roll Me Away' from Bob Seger is beautiful and so is 'When The Rainbow Comes' from Shawn Colvin...and then 'Sweet Emotion' from Aerosmith..okay,if you're an Aerosmith fan,exactly how many different versions of this song can you own without going insane? I always skip this one too just cause I've heard it too much...then the highlight of the CD in my opinion 'Mister Big Time' from Jon Bon Jovi,it should have been a single,great song,then we have 'Come Together' from Aerosmith ...great song,I've just heard it time and time again before...Patty Smyth 'Wish I Were You' is awesome,I love this song and usually hit the play button again when it's done,I love this tune! Our Lady Peace does a real nice job at rocking out on 'Starseed' and Chantal Kreviazuk sounds darn cute enough to pull off this cheesy remake of 'Leaving On A Jet Plane' (she does sound adorable on this one) the instrumental theme from Armageddon is very cool and then we're left with 'Animal Crackers' sorry,I just don't find Ben Afleck cute enough to pull this off although I'm sure the girls reading this will disagree
It's a good CD and most definitely has enough great songs to make it a worthy addition to your collection (especially at this price)
the upside - some really awesome tunes...most notably 'I Don't Want To Miss A Thing' 'Mister Big Time' 'Roll Me Away' and 'Wish I Were You' (and leaving on a jet plane is a guilty pleasure) and most of these great tunes you won't find anywhere else!
the downside - can't really think of any,it does seem to get a little long if you are listening from start to finish but maybe that's just cause I've heard many of these songs so often
the bottom line - if you don't already have this,you should go out and get it immediately...there are plenty of great songs and at this price you have no excuse not to! Donutman says so!!!

When even the most talented performer is asked by choice or force to work outside their element the normal results aren't pretty. This is only one of the infinite reasons why the self-titled effort from Armageddon is nothing short of spectacular.
Imagine the surprise when Keith Relf a vocalist in the higher echelon decided to branch out from his legendary British Invasion (Yardbirds) singing style for a trip into uncharted waters. Relf had left a permanent stamp of greatness with his contribution to the Yardbirds in the 1960's.
Armageddon (1975) was-Keith Relf on vocals (Yardbirds), Martin Pugh- guitar (From Steamhammer), drummer Bobby Caldwell (Johnny Winter) and bassist Lou Cennamo (Very early Renaissance, Illusion, and Steamhammer).
Unfortunately, for the musical world we lost Keith after the one and only treasure the band would leave us. Clocking in at about forty-one minutes the album is timeless. Every facet is brilliant from the cover that shows the destruction in the background, the musicians selected to record, and the life or death effort put into every note and lyric.
When the words heavy and metal are together to most it conjures up negative thoughts. The preconceived notion that it is all about being loud and how many of the same useless riffs will be repeated is forever branded in the brain. There is also "Intelligent Metal." Records such as this one, Deep Purple with Ritchie Blackmore, Blue Oyster Cult in the early days, and Black Sabbath with Ozzy should never be placed in the same cookie jar as the thousands of groups known for their hair and not talent.
Track 1 is appropriately titled "Buzzard." There is no preparation for what's to come. A vacuum with the power of a tank sucks you through the wall with no escape. You are in a trance as the sonic blast emanates for eight minutes. If the speakers and your body need recovery, there will be brief calm before the next storm.
Track 2 "Silver Tightrope" is beauty plain and simple. The perfect mix of Pugh's guitar (With such clarity he can be in the room with you) and Relf's extraordinary vocals create a song of beauty.
Track 3 "Paths And Planes And Future Gains" continues the theme of the opening cut. Once again a destructive force leaves no stone unturned. The energy and aggression don't dissipate. Pugh's guitar is a machete sparing nothing.
Track 4 "Last Stand Before" features well-written words that are delivered in majestic fashion by Relf. His range is tested throughout, as is inflection. There would be no doubting the outcome. Listen for tremendous production during Pugh's solo, as the sound changes from speaker to speaker. The octane a shade lower than the previous track but not any less stellar. You may even hear Relf pull out a harmonica from the Yardbird days!
Track 5- "Basking In The White Of The Midnight Sun (Warning Comin' On/Basking In The White Of The Midnight Sun (Reprise)" Somehow the band is still standing although the listener has long been rendered unconscious. The conclusion is more firepower and a terrific vocal delivery from Mr. Relf.
There aren't enough superlatives that would give proper justice to the artistry of the Armageddon debut. There is a reason above all others that this should be in the CD collection. Keeping Keith's memory alive with the brilliant Yardbirds reissues and his final gift to us is paramount.

ARMAGEDDON is a band that missed their moment of fame and got lost in Rock n' Roll history. If ARMAGEDDON would ever be remembered for anything in Rock history, it would be that this band truly knew how to kick a*s when it came to playing 60's and 70's hard Rock music. What's even more amazing is that ARMAGEDDON'S lead singer and frontman, the late great Keith Relf would not only form this band, but he would create and give this band its very foundation of hard Rock n' Roll music. When Keith Relf met up and joined forces with guitarist Martin Pugh (Formally from STEAMHAMMER), drummer Bobby Caldwell (Worked with JOHNNY WINTER) and bassist Lou Cennamo, ARMAGEDDON would be born and 60's and 70's hard Rock n' Roll was about to get a new lesson and a new chapter for the hard Rock n' Roll music that was yet to come and beyond. As we all well know, Keith Relf, like Eric "Slowhand" Clapton, wanted to strictly stick to the Blues like they both did in their band THE YARDBIRDS. When I listen to the "ARMAGEDDON" album, I am totally in disbelief that Keith Relf would record an album like this. The self-titled "ARMAGEDDON" album reminds me in many ways of the hard Rock n' Roll music days of the 60's with many critics comparing this legendary self-titled album to another one of Keith Relf's former band mates and his new band, THE MIGHTY LED ZEPPELIN. The tragedy of ARMAGEDDON and their legendary self-titled album is that it would be the only album and THE LAST ALBUM that Keith Relf would ever record alive. In my opinion, the self-titled 'ARMAGEDDON" album is not only a great legendary album, but it is also a true testament of the sheer genius and musical creativity of four extremely talented individuals. The self-titled "ARMAGEDDON" album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great band that was without a doubt, truly ahead of their time. This legendary self-titled album also serves as one of the many great contributions, accomplishments and achievements that Keith Relf would give to Rock n' Roll and its long and glorious history.
It is now time to let the Hard Rock n' Roll music of ARMAGEDDON to speak for itself and back it up by doing all of the talking musically. The legendary self-titled "ARMAGEDDON" Album from 1975 begins with the breathtaking eight minute Rocker "Buzzard," the beautifully slow electric acoustic Rocker "Silver Tightrope," the blistering and hard driving Rocker "Paths And Planes And Future Gains," the merciless a*s kicking hard Rocker "Last Stand Before" and the eleven minute groundbreaking hard Rocker "Basking In The White Of The Midnight Sun." May I also add that Keith Relf's blistering lead vocals were in top form while laying down the tracks for this legendary album. Despite only having one lung, Relf sings at a new level unimagined and pushes his one lung beyond its limits. Guitarist Martin Pugh plays some of the most blistering guitar riffs and licks ever. Pugh's merciless guitar arrangements take the music to another place and level giving the music a hard driving sound.
Overall, this is one hell of legendary self-titled debut album that is worth checking out and seeking further research and information into especially if you are a hardcore diehard ARMAGEDDON fan or a devout music collector. As for all of the curious newcomers and new beginners that are not quite familiar with the sound and music of ARMAGEDDON, the self-titled debut ARMAGEDDON" album is the perfect place to start that will also suit your musical needs and tastes. Buying this album, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own ARMAGEDDON music collection. A few months later, on 14 May 1976, former ARMAGEDDON lead singer and frontman Keith Relf would die from an electrocution from his electric guitar while writing new songs for the new band he had recently formed called ILLUSION. Keith Relf has already forever left his place and mark in Rock n' Roll history with his former band THE YARDBIRDS by receiving the highest ultimate honor possible, by being inducted as a member of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. In my opinion, because of ARMAGEDDON'S short life with only one self-titled debut album, ARMAGEDDON should also be remembered as a great legendary band and should never be forgotten. Relf left Renaissance after two albums (actually half way threw the second album) due to frustrations with the music business and being tired of touring. However, when he created Armageddon, he was involved with one of the best guitar rock albums of the 70's.
After the disolution of Steamhammer, Relf, and ex-Steamhammer members, Martin Pugh (guitar) and Louis Cennamo (bass) came to L.A. and hooked up with ex-Captain Beyond and Johny Winter drummer Bobby Caldwell to form Armageddon. Armageddon combined the complex drum patterns of Caldwell, with Pugh's heavy and stylistic riffing and Relf's insightful and searching lyrics to create a haunting and enduring piece of heavy rock.
Criticized as sounding "dated" when initially released, this is one of the strong points of this album. Many of the best hard rock acts of the time (Purple-Stormbringer, Zeppelin-Presence, Sabbath-Sabatoge, etc) were moving on to slicker production of less gritty songs. Armageddon sounded like it was from an earlier and more "real" musical time.
The opening song "Buzzard" is usually listed by fans as the highlight of the album. Borrowing a riff from Steamhammer's "Penumbra," Pugh's guitar soars with speed, control and precision, while Relf's intelligent lyrics rap around the crashing, thunderous drums of Caldwell. It is an exhilarating eight minute flight worth taking over and over again.
While "Buzzard" is one of the album's highlights, it is by no means the sole reason to own this disc. Other particularly strong moments include: the beautiful and stylish "Silver Tightrope," which features an echoing guitar and more contemplative lyrics from Relf, and "Last Stand Before" a Zeppelinesque (Physical Graffiti era) rocker with descriptive and prophetic lyrics. In this one Relf sings "Lost a friend, met his end, way before his time" and "my brother's falling catch him if I can. I see him falling you can join him in his last stand," it makes one wonder if Keith was aware of his own fate.
It's too bad that this proved to be the last stand for Relf and Armageddon. Relf returned to England due to poor health shortly after this was released. Relf's health and reported drug use among some of the band lead to Armageddon failing to release any more material. Relf died shortly after returning to England, when he was electrocuted while playing guitar.
He did record one more song "All the Falling Angels" that is included on an album by Illusion called Echanted Caress. (Illusion was the name the original members of Renaissance chose when they reunited. This was because Anne Haslem and her crew had become Renaissance).
Armageddon remains a powerful reminder of what artists where able to due when they were given the creative control to explore. Oddly enough, this album may never have gotten made if it wasn't for the succes of Peter Framptom's Comes Alive. According to the cd booklet, Framptom reccomended Armageddon to A&M Records, and because he was their top selling artist at the time, they listened to him. I'm very glad they did. Armageddon remains a classic heavy rock album that is still worth hearing.

their style is darker than other fem metal groups like Nightwish and Within Temptation (of whom i am a huge fan), not only in terms of their music but also their lyrics which at certain points make no secret of their association, at least nominally, to the occult. rip-roaring drums, death growling vocals and guitars vociferously assert their agreement in this, but yet the light side seems to be tugging at their other shoulder in the guise of violins, orchestral synths and Lady Angellyca's voice which certainly manages to sound angelic at times.
this 'beauty and the beast' arrangement has worked so well for other bands in the past, such as Tristania and Theatre of Tragedy to name some of the better ones, and Forever Slave give it a facelift and their own artistic touches. the result, as i have already stated, is magnificent, but perhaps not immediately apparent.
this should be an essential part in the collection of those who enjoy melodic, transcending metal with a cutting edge and a gorgeous female voice. 5 stars for all around excellence.

As for the music - Well the music is extremely symphonic and never lacks an ensemble instrument. The band is very underground and the album is quite hard to find in some countries. Even though the album is low budget, It has been engineered and programmed professionally.
I was quite surprised to listen to the album because it has death "Opeth-like" vocals too.Lunatic Asylum is a strong opener. The strings are very theatrical, and the symphony actually reflects the mood of the whole album, depending on the way they are played.
There are some machine gun blast beats followed by the best solo in the album. The death vocals are very low, but coherent. Reminisces follows, and the strings are more lighthearted and less embellished. The Gregorian chanting follows every line sung in the choruses, and fits very well. A solo is played with the guitar but carries on with the chorus singing on top.The album is a concept album tellnig the story of a teenager called "Alice" who went crazy and killed her parents. Alice Dies but finds peace.

Tristeza - Tristeza is the only song without death vocals but has a really strong emotional depth and contains very intelligent riffs. It must be heard to be appreciated 5/5
In The Forest - This song surprisably bursts and has a great epic preportion of a mixture between violins and heavy guitaring along with sexy vocals 5/5
"The Letter" - Another experimental song that has very sad elements towards the album's storyline. It contains a part where alice speaks and you always look forward to it because the voice is very cute and lonely. 5/5

This is a concept album, telling the story about Alice, who's parents have deceased. The lyrical content is all akin to the Gothic imagery and links to Alice's story: about death, despair, darkness, spirits, hell etc. Like a lot of Gothic metal, there is frequent use of male death vocals. The death vocals fit in very well, and all accentuate the `inner demons' of temptation Alice has to face when she is alone. ("Innocent! Alice tortured by Darkness. Innocent! The Shades will get you down!" in Lunatic Asylum for example) Lady Angellyca has a beautiful voice; in the middle of the classical Sharon Den Adel and the operatic Tarja Turunen. The only slight problem is that sometimes her vocals `melt' into the music, so it is difficult to understand what she's singing. There's also Gregorian chanting in Reminisces; a violin, a piano in nearly all songs, and bells provided by the keyboards. Indeed, this album is a heavily textured album with lots of instruments played at once.
This album is very symphonic and I mean VERY. If you thought Within Temptation and Nightwish was symphonic, think again: this album surpasses them all. The symphony plays a bigger role than the guitars in most cases, and it is like the symphony plays the major melodies and the guitars adorn them. That being said, the guitars dishes out amazing solos in Lunatic Asylum (from 2.32 to 3.08); Reminiscences (4.00 to 5.00) and Across The Mirror (3.53 to 4.35). Most of the other `solos' are actually the strings playing with the guitars backing up. Death vocals are featured in the songs Lunatic Asylum, In The Forest, Equilibrium, Circles Of Tenebra, Aquelarre, and The Letter. In Equilibrium there's even some black metal screams. The drums are pummelling, and the bass is extremely well sustained. The songs themselves are clearly very Gothic and atmospheric. Most of them are moody and some are slow (almost like Gothic Doom), with drawn out strings parts, and a lot of eerie diminished chords. The songs are quite long: there are 10 songs and the album is 54 minutes long. It is quite unfair to compare this band to any other bands because their sound is quite unique.
Lunatic Asylum is a strong opener. The strings are very theatrical, and the symphony actually reflects the mood of the whole album, depending on the way they are played. There are some machine gun blast beats followed by the best solo in the album. The death vocals are very low, but coherent. Reminisces follows, and the strings are more lighthearted and less embellished. The Gregorian chanting follows every line sung in the choruses, and fits very well. A solo is played with the guitar but carries on with the chorus singing on top of it.
In The Forest is my favourite song because it's got amazing drumming. There's a combination of sinister chords with a more positive atmosphere. I love the lines "Nymphs start to sing to me. They whisper to me my name. Don't stop, Alice, this symphony! Don't tell my name nevermore," with the death vocals repeating the words "sing to me" and "symphony!" Following this is a beautiful piece of music with the symphony, followed by a slow piano part. Equilibrium is pretty much a `horror type' song all the way through. With the strings being played dramatically, the black vocal screams and the pounding double bass drumming; this is the most desolate song on the album. From the 3.34 mark to the end, the song changes tone into a slow, Gothic doom song.
Circles Of Tenebra makes full use of the symphony and has a recurring melody played in between choruses. At the 4.15 mark a creepy voice comes in, followed by the upbeat chorus. The atmosphere of Dream and Dust is positive, with prominent bells and pianos being played. There is some Latin being sung and this is a more upbeat song. Aquelarre changes mood from Dreams and Dust, reverting back to the gloomy ambience (perhaps because the lyrics speak of rituals and sacrifice). The violin can be heard the most in this song.
At 7.56 Across The Mirror is the longest song and is divided up into many parts. It starts off with a slow doom introduction then proceeds into a grandiose explosion of fast-paced drumming with some classical vocals. In the choruses there are tiny amounts of death vocals, but not enough to be notable. At the 3.15 mark there is a 2-minute solo of guitars and strings, followed by a slow minimalised chorus. The drumming is top-notch in this chorus and very ostentatious and anthem-like.
Tristeza is the shortest song (3.51) and is a very straightforward song, void of death vocals. However the merger of guitars and strings is felt significantly, and there is an electronic beat here and there. The album ends at The Letter, a powerful fast song. I love the violins in this song. As it is the last song, it can be assumed that Alice has died but found peace - from the lines "Your soul is flying a long way from here...Your soul reduced to dust...Today you life is a whisper for the angels".
Overall this is a very good debut album and I can't wait until they release their next album. If you like Gothic metal, doom metal, or symphonic metal then I highly recommend this album. If you like Within Temptation, Nightwish, Sirenia, Leaves' Eyes, Theatre of Tragedy, Epica, After Forever or Tristania, then this album is a must.

Not Bad.......2007-07-11
When I listen to this CD, a lot of the time I am reminded of Cradle of Filth, and even some Borknagar in spots. The playing is excellent and the vocals are not bad. However, after several listens, I cannot dig out any specific melody or riff that sticks with me. Another reviewer said the lyrics sucked so I read some of them. The lyrics are almost incomprehensible, the English ones anyway, but that is not a bad thing as I could care less. I love Finntroll and their lyrics are all in Swedish.
What it boils down to is that this is excellent music but the songs are not that memorable. What stands out is the musicianship, especially my favorite black metal drummer, Nicky Barker. The other musicians are super too, but they can only do so much to rise above the material they have to work with.
Overall, this is still a good CD, just not the best. I like it enough to try another one of their CD's one day, just to see if they can write more memorable stuff. I recommend this for symphonic black metal fans.
Here's the problem........2007-04-16
So I relate "The Silent Force" to this album because Dimmu Borgir seemed to do almost the same thing. The vocals are far different from anything like "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" and they added choirs and more symphonic sounds to create a great, yet more mainstream album. Unfortunately, this LP too, despite its incredible sound, doesnt have much personality. The lyrics, the choirs, the layouts- they're all meant to sound good but in this case are only for credibility.
Personally I can listen to it over and over without having much of a problem (besides getting a little bored) but I know some people have more of a problem with that than I do.
An Album Which Defies Any Genre Label.......2007-04-01
It would be easy to label this as "black metal" or "death metal." But, that would be a great disservice to this masterpiece Dimmu Borgir have created. It is mind-blowing in its complexity, ingenuity and musicianship. This is an album created by a band with a vision and a determination which is hard to describe and even harder to fathom. An album as innovative as this is no happy accident. You can hear the effort Dimmu Borgir put into the recording of this record in every single second of sound.
There are no fillers here. There are no unplanned notes from any contributing instrument, voice, or effects. From the creepy intro to the three-part vocal harmonies to the eerily effective sound of a crow squawking, everything is exactly what it needs to be, where it needs to be. It all comes together and fits like pieces of an enormous, complex puzzle. I ask anyone to refer me to any piece of music anywhere that even remotely compares.
This is the album Pink Floyd would have produced if they were a black metal band...and they were composing a concept album focused on the doom and gloom of the impending apocalypse...and they were being held at gunpoint by Satan himself...and he's ordered them to create the most evil album any humans could ever possibly create.
I cannot imagine Dimmu Borgir ever being able to top themselves after this. I cannot imagine anyone ever creating anything like it ever again. All bands who could refer to their music as being "black metal" have been slammed upside their collective heads with a 12 ton brick of pure mayhem, creativity, fluidity, and cohesion. Dimmu Borgir didn't go back to the black metal drawing board. They burned the drawing board in the name of evil, leaving all others to stand around warming their hands, wondering "Where do we go from here?"

The penultimate collection ..........2006-12-07
I have always had a weak spot for (good, or maybe even intelligent) science fiction/fantasy and film music, especially its way of evoking mystery, grandure and wide open spaces. Call it a weakness if you want. But it was maybe really kick started off, for as far as I can remember, with Star Trek. But especially Star Trek II, III and IV - essentially a trilogy - because of their very romantic but very warm, human core, set on the broadest canvasses of unlimited and mysterious outer space. But then there was the music for adding that essential extra dimension of emotion and atmosphere. I am happy that much of the music on this album is from the Star Trek series and films, often equaling or sometimes even outclassing the original recordings.
This kind of music (for the movies) should be seen as an art on its own rights with its own merits and qualities. As such, the musical sequences on these CD's are a beautifully played cross section of some of the most evoking orchestral music for science fiction/fantasy film ever created. And I very much like the nicely blended, wide and deep orchestral soundpicture with enough reverberation to evoke a sense of wide open spaces.
I am quite thrilled by tracks like the evocative music from Dune, truly transporting one to the vastly sands of Arrakis (the music is wonderful, but to my great regret I think the movie itself is a flawed masterpiece at best, alas.). And then there is the very different, goofy music for Ghostbusters (memories of childhood), the spoofy but electrifying music from Mars Attacks (lovingly parodist music, this, with not a little touch of irony) and the happily adventurous, forward driving Theme from Galaxy Quest ('Never give up, never surrender!'), now also used for the internet-based fan-series Star Trek: The Hidden Frontier. On the other side of the spectrum we have the atmospheric music for Enemy Mine (an underestimated 'little' movie), the Theme from The Right Stuff (actually science FACT, not fiction, this film, just like Apollo 13, of course), the eerily attractive music for Species, the original End Title for Alien (not used in the theatrical version of the movie, where it was replaced by music from howard Hanson's Second Symphony), the exquisitely exotic music for Stargate, the sweet and warmly sympathetic, beautifully re-orchestrated, theme for Starman, the title cue for Star Trek: TOS (much more melodiously played than the original! If only a series nowadays could continue to be as thought provoking and as original as Star Trek was during its launch, fourty years ago ...) and a truly overpowering End Titles Suite from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. I especially like the thrillingly grandiloquent rendition here of the music for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. And how nice it is to hear the (thematic) similarities between James Horner's music for The Wrath of Khan, his great break-through as a film music composer, and his (two years) earlier music for Battle Beyond the Stars (which did indeed help him earn the job for writing the music for Star Trek II) ...
But on the 'down side', if one is looking for - for example - the gorgeously expansively played End Titles from Cocoon, it is not included here: one has to acquire the album that 'kicked it all off', so to say, namely 'Space and Beyond', also on Silva Screen. I was very pleased also with the inclusion on that album of some of the music from the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, namely where one of the characters, Tasha Yar, in one of the episodes (Skin of Evil) is saying goodbye to her crewmmates: sweetly sentimental and simple music which I have always wanted to own on CD. I guess that a few cues from the other two sequals ('Alien Invasion: Space and Beyond II' and 'Space3: Beyond the Final Frontier') didn't make it onto this 4 CD collection-album as well, but I guess that it would be the 'better part of the bargain' to opt to buy this 'The Science Fiction Album' instead of buying all three albums separately. Well, of course it is for yourself to ultimately decide what you really want ;-)
If I were to nitpick (which is not easy with such a marvellous project as this one), then I would say that while all music is performed with magnificent grandure and with style, some of it is not performed as crisply and as technically 'on the spot' as some of the original recordings: ensemble is a little slack and the playing somewhat stilted sometimes, losing some of the edge and the originality of the writing. ET and Star Wars spring to mind, but then the soundtracks for Star Wars are traditionally recorded with the magnificent London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro John Williams himself, and these superior recordings (especially the ones for Episode I, II and III) can't really be bettered, IMHO. Likewise for the music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, I believe that in the end one really has to resort to the ultimate reference, namely the original recording (which is true in many other instances of 'original recordings'), and then the 20th anniversay colector's edition of this soundtrack on Columbia/Legacy (truly unmissable, this veritable classic of sci-fi/film music soundtracks!).
But all in all this 4CD-collection amounts to probably being the penultimate high quality sci-fi music album collection (I certainly know of no other project that comes as close quality as well as quantity wise), with some of the most memorable musical moments from classic to modern sci-fi/fantasy film captured in lavish orchestrations.
Collection-wise: five *stars*. Playing: generally four *stars*, sometimes more. The recording quality: five *stars*. The music (qualified on its own merits as film music) and its (re)orchestrations: generally five *stars*. In the end this is all highly recommended, and certainly not to be missed by science fiction and fantasy film music fans. Klaatu barada nikto.

The Ulllllltimate Sci-Fi Music Collection.......2005-10-23
The moment I ripped off the shrink-wrap and popped it into my cd player was a moment of great trepidation. Believe me when I tell that I've seen my fair share of sub-par orchestral recording in my lifetime. Very often they are in those big super-packs of music, and suffer from poor direction, improper mastering, and sometime even pathetic orchestration (or worse yet have something sounding like a cheap synthesizer and a kazoo in place of a full orchestra). I needn't have worried though. This sucker is fantastic.
Many people who are not audiophiles will probably miss the point of this cd collection. It is not the original versions of the pieces. It is re-orchestrations, mostly by the phenomenal Prague Symphony Orchestra. Many of these themes didn't sound all that hot in there original versions because they were low budget films or were not recorded in high-fidelity. Here they are given the full treatment, mastered with the most loving care imaginable. Often the version found in these cds is SUPERIOR to the original.
Remember the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Of course you do. But how many times have you heard a cheap imitation of the original version from the movie, starting too low in volume and ending too high (and missing the essential pipe-organ that gives it that extra oomph)? Well, this first track in the entire collection is not only everything it should be instrumental and timing-wise, but it also has been oh-so-carefully adjusted during the mastering process so that at no time is the music either too low or too high in volume (surely a benchmark for every other recording ever to be made of the piece).
Or what about the theme from the (at-the-time) uber-creepy The Black Hole? The orchestration of this piece of music goes from tiumphant to terrifying and back again, with a splendor and cleanness that I CERTAINLY don't remember being in the original recording.
Then there's the new version of the theme from Independence Day, complete with a violin solo, a far more electrifying ending climax, and a chorus so thunderous that you feel like applauding at the end. Simply indescribable. Kind of like the MIND-BLOWING rendition of the theme from The Last Star Fighter. This has been one of my favorite themes for a long time now, but I've never heard it played like this. I think the original version of the theme is something like 1 minute long, but this new version doesn't just fade out (HAHAHAHA!!!!) THIS version is THREE minutes long, goes through the main theme THREE times, with the final strains being so triumphant and joyous I could not help but feel an electrifying charge the first dozen or so times (come to think of it, I still feel that way). This is superior to the original in EVERY way. AWESOME.
And let's not forget the incredible new rendition of Stargate with it's heavy use of clarinets (for Egyptian effect!) and a triumphant new ending (completely lacking the chanting from the original version. This version is so different that for the first minute it is very hard to tell that it is in fact Stargate. But then the main theme kicks in, and then you get this incredible flute solo for my favorite part of theme (the whole thing is played slower, but arguably more powerfully than the original). My goodness. At first I found the thing so different I didn't like it. But then I listened to it again. And again. And again.
I could go on and on, talking about the fantastic new rendition of Moon Raker, the ear-popping Battlestar Galactica, the classic Star Trek (First Contact has a minute or two of the theme from Star Trek:The Motion Picture before going into the main theme), or the sweet renditions of music from the Star Wars movies (or the music from E.T.).
I have to mention though that this collection was not picked based merely on what people want, or on what is popular. No, the people who made it obviously thought a GOOD music collection was better than a popular one. That's why you get a heartbreakingly beautiful theme from A.I. instead of the main theme. It's why you get music from movies that you probably never gave a second thought to the music (because the movie was lousy). It's why you get Armageddon, Judge Dredd, and Robocop (who would have guessed their music was so COOL when there was all that crazy action and bad-acting going on on-screen).
I said it before and I'll say it again. This cd-set was mastered with tender-loving-care, and it shows BIG-TIME. High-fidelity the likes of which I have not seen since the days when cds were brand-new in the world. Dolby Surround. Perfectly balanced. BEAUTIUFL orchestrations. About the only thing that makes me scratch my head is the weird sound-effect tracks (Oooookay.....). Other than that, it's PERFECT. Obviously they could not include every sci-fi theme ever (no one can), but this collection is REALLY GOOD. A lot of great themes that got away (forgotten gems :), new versions of old favorites, and under-appreciated classics aplenty, but ALWAYS the full and complete versions with nothing cut-out (the theme from Dune is quite extended).
If you love movie music (and sci-fi movie music in particular) you MUST buy this awesome collection). It is not the original recordings. Almost always the new ones are better (if they aren't better they're just equal). This is what you have been waiting for. I for one am going to be buying quite a few cds from this company in the future. Give your ears the treat they deserve. Buy it NOW.

"STORM" is Theatre of Tragedy's latest offering, the sixth album from Norway's biggest and most influencing Gothic Rock-act. Even though Nell has been with the band for over two years now, this is the first album with her as the front-lady, together with Raymond and the rest of the band. And somehow the whole album is kind of a comeback, although Theatre of Tragedy has never really been away. Theatre of Tragedy made music history in the mid nineties with albums like "Velvet darkness they fear" and "Aegis". Never before had a band combined a dark male voice with enchanting and bright female vocals to this extent. And no-one could have guessed that this mixture would cause such a bright variety of dark and atmospheric shades that has made Gothic Rock/Metal so popular. Theatre of Tragedy will be, and has always been, unique. But a band creating something so ground-breaking can never be a band that does not dare anything. So the Norwegians have always developed and experimented with their talents, being creative and exploring new ways to express themselves. Industrial electronic influences were to follow with their album Musique, there were changes in the line-up, and even shades of pop-music on their following album Assembly. Even though they've experimented with different musical styles, you could always find the 'Theatre of Tragedy touch' in their music. Theatre of Tragedy parted ways with female singer Liv Kristine in August 2003 and thereby marked an end of their first decade as a band that has dared, gained and achieved more than most of the others. A decade of great creativity and a permanent artistic development draws to a close. And what has been more than clear all the time, is that this was not an conclusive end, but a new beginning. With Nell, their new age has begun. The age of the "Storm", one might say. This is the beginning of which is marked by an album that unites all that the band has ever been loved and adored for: strong, dark melodies, powerful arrangements, haunting lyrics, the charming play between the deep mystical male voice and the pure beauty of female vocals. What a great band this is. The music has classical touches mixed in with Industrial/Hard Rock riffs, but the clash of vocalizations is what set this band apart from anything I have heard. The vocals are a mix of lively polished female vocals with a rougher and darker male drone.
I was surprised to find out that ToT was a Norwegian band. Thankfully there is none of the screaming, rasping, and growling you find in their music.
Over here in North America Evanessence comes the closest to ToT but I have to point out that I said... closest. ToT is by far and away more solid than Evanessence, especially when it comes to the vocals. Though Evanessence does have an edge in their more interesting songwriting.
If you are looking for a rock CD that does not follow any formulas, has some melodies, and you like to hear a talented singer in front of a distorted guitar, give this CD a chance. I think you will be as surprised and happy as I was.

The guy who can't sing is Raymond, and his distorted whispering style of singing is the one thing that keeps me from giving this album the 4 stars that the soaring choruses and lovely female vocals deserve. On some songs, when he's actually singing to a tune (Ashes and Dreams) it almost works. However, his apparent lack of vocal range seems to influence the songwriting, as evidenced in the stark similarity in melody in the verses of consecutive songs The Storm and Silence.
TOT can really do with a decent male vocalist - see how well a decent male vocalist like Marko Hietala blended with Tarja Turunen in Nightwish - a massive improvement on the death growling male vocals on their Oceanborn album. TOT can do with a singer like that - it would probably mean stronger verses to back up the fantastic choruses.
Failing that, I'd be happy enough to hear Nell sing everything.
Talking about the choruses, there are some rippers here. The Storm, Silence, Ashes and Dreams, Voices, Begin and End, Exile, Debris and Disintegration all feature magnificent choruses in varying degrees of excellence. It's hard to say a whole lot more about the songs because #1 they are disappointingly short, and #2 there's not a whole lot to say about the forgettable parts that Raymond performs.
In the end it's good to see TOT abandoning their overly industrial sound and getting back to something resembling Aegis, even though The Storm is quite different to that. Only two things were needed to make this a 5 star album:
1. A decent male vocalist
2. Longer songs
The length of the songs leaves me with almost a bigger complaint than Raymond's uninspiring vocals. Just as you start getting into a song (mostly verse-chorus-verse-chorus-done) it's over. Silence barely reaches the 3 minute mark, Voices falls well short at 2:47. I thought we left songs this short behind in the sixties. As a matter of fact it's only the mediocre Fade and the closing track Debris that breaches the 4 minute barrier.
In the end though, Nell's inspired singing and some wonderful choruses make this album worth your time. Once you get used to the poor male vocals you actually manage to weather them without too much discomfort, knowing that at the end of that short dark tunnel Nell is waiting to mesmerize and enchant you.

A breath of fresh air compared to the pop dribble permeating the American music scene right now. This is my favorite UDO album - to date. My second favorite is Thunderball. "Wrong Side of Midnight" is the "hit" off this album, but by no means is the only great song. American bands have moved away from the type of metal/rock played by UDO. Fans of heavy/hard/true metal have to look to Europe. Hard rock never really fell out of favor in Europe and the bands there have perfected their art. UDO is extremely heavy, but very tight and creative. The graphics on Mastercuter are really cool!! This edition includes the video of Wrong Side of Midnight - well worth the extra $. Go to UDO's website for a video clip of Wrong Side of Midnight. If you are new to UDO, but like old Accept, you won't be disappointed. If you like UDO, you'll love this album.

Re-sets the bar for rock-rap bands.......2006-10-20
This band works really well as a mix between the two that is more true to the two original poles rather than being a hybrid - the music is really good - they are really rocking out on it in tracks and it's worthy of a lot of good rock bands.
And the vocalists are great also - one of them takes a similar sound to Ice Cube at his best in some spots, the other is good also and they are really good at it rather than being only half way the real deal.
What it means is a really good record - it's lively and powerful but feels like it is meant to be - rather than somewhat contrived. Only Hed PE for me is a better effort and this is close to it - brilliant stuff. Might be more suitable for fans of that harder style rap of the early 90's than for rock fans as that is so strong but it's great music.
Songs I would suggest to have a listen are 'I shot Lucifer' and 'Break the Chains' - but the entire first half of the album is terrific.
