Album Description

Girl Talk's second album."Unstoppable, for all its sweaty beats and sexy grooves, paints a picture of Gillis that's just as much mad scientist as oversexed party animal. Gillis' manic experiments bring life to inanimate rhythms and swap the personalities of unwitting samples in harebrained schemes to make bottoms shake and fists pump." -DUSTED

I'm a huge Girl Talk fan and own everything he has put out. This record is my favorite. It is glitchier than Night Ripper and far poppier than Secret Diary. If you like Night Ripper, it is a pretty safe bet you will like this.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best CD's out there!.......2007-05-10

All ages and musical backgrounds love this CD. The Baltimore Consort are amazing. One really feels one is in a smoky pub in the 14oo's getting plastered with England's best musicians! Don't miss "Pox on You;" my kids absolutely howl with glee at the "bass fartophone." I haven't heard laughter like that come out of my little boy since he was a toddler. "Sweet Sir Walter" features one of the guys singing in a falsetto that sweeps lustily down into a Tim Curry-esque (think Dr. Frank-n-furter)gutteral guffaw of delight. So outrageously fun one forgets one is listening to Renaissance madrigals.

4 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-03-25

These bawdy catches and ballads take us on a journey to the taverns and other social gathering places of the the real 'Merry Old England'. Some of us may be mildly shocked by the directness and earthiness of the text, but everyday life in the 17th century was much more 'down-to'earth- and forward. These texts-some blatant and other euphemistic-fully explore the spectrum of humor from the sly smirk to the back-slapping guffaw.
The singing of both ballads and catches belongs to a long and venerable tradition in England. The natural habitat of the of the catch was the tavern, while the ballad was known in a wider variety of social settings as well as the stage. By the end of the 17th century, ballads were collected by connoisseurs of popular culture and published in anthologies. The main source for this recording, 'The Catch Club, or 'Merry Companions', was printed in 1762.
A quote from the catch-philosopher (of 'Come, come let us drink') is offered by the Baltimore Consort: "...wine and good cheer will in spite of our fear inspire our hearts with mirth..the time we live, to wine let us give, since we all must turn to earth...."
This is an excellent collection of songs; quite interesting and varied. The instruments are played skillfully, and the voices, for the most part, are good quality. However, as with all 'folk-like' songs, the diction is not always clear, and that is very true of several of these on this disc. The female voices were more difficult to comprehend much of the time. The text is printed out, so ultimately familiararity will make them easier to understand. I do like the disc, and think that it needed to be done.As to a previous criticism concerning the fact that it wasn't 'true' barroom singing. Of course, it's not!!!If it were, you would not understand any of it!!!!!Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Prelewd to Postlewd.......2005-09-28

The Baltimore Consort, an ensemble of six players, was founded in 1980 with the purpose of performing 'broken consort' pieces of Elizabethan origin. 'Broken' here refers to the instrumentation - treble viol/violin, flue/recorder, lute, cittern, bandore and bass viol. Their repertoire expanded beyond these beginnings to include broader British fare, as well as French and Italian music of the time. This is a happy expansion, as it made this disc of older, bawdy (for its time) music possible.

The Baltimore Consort play with life and vigour, with a good deal of improvisational flair, not being bound to texts and going through the production of notes as if mechanically. This is true to the spirit and nature of the early music, in which performers often had to 'play by ear', neither being able to read music nor having printed music even if they could. This is particularly true of the songs on this disc, where many are derivative of anonymous jokes and stories, and much of the music is likewise folk-tune and anonymously composed.

Some of the songs can be rather shocking. As Mary Anne Ballard writes in the accompanying notes, 'We must remember that in the days before indoor plumbing and pooper-scooper laws, everyday life was of an earthier flavour than it is today.... The men of the singing clubs and the ladies of stage poked fun at themselves and their companions with wit, pleasantry and contrivance.'

The names of many of the composers of these pieces have been lost to history, particularly the more folk-song oriented ones. However, some well-known composers are represented among the pieces here - Purcell, D'Urfey, Aldridge, and others.

The regular players include Mary Anne Ballard (viols), Mark Cudek (cittern, guitar, recorder and bass viol), Custer LaRue (vocalist/soprano), Larry Lipkis (recorder, viols), Ronn McFarlane (lute), Chris Norman (flutes), Webb Wiggins (tambourine and 'virginals'). Some artists are known from other Dorian productions, such as Ronn McFarlane on the lute in the collection 'Greensleeves'.

Added to the regular consort players are the Merry Companions, including Peter Becker (baritone), Alexander Blachly (baritone), Paul Shipper (bass, belch-canto), and James Weaver (baritone).

One more addition includes a guest artist, Lorenzo Labbrobacio, playing of all things, the 'fartophone', a rather mysterious instrument indeed. Labbrobacio defies identification on the internet other than references to this disc, and so the mystery deepens.

This is music that is interesting, truly fun to listen to, entertaining and has a quality about it that makes it a joy both in musical and humourous tones.

2 out of 5 stars Sounds like they're singing Christmas carols.......2004-11-09

This recording is professionally produced - perhaps too much so. I've been in a few taverns and heard my share of bawdy songs. I am used to hearing them sung with gusto, with a wink and a naughty smile, to the raucous and enthusiastic appreciation of the audience. The songs on this CD are performed entirely straight. The results are technically competent but fail utterly in conveying the spirit and fun that make this genre worth listening to.

4 out of 5 stars A sly and rollicksome good time!.......2002-11-29

On this recording, the Baltimore Consort and the Merry Companions are full of fun, both blatant and tongue-in-cheek. Soprano Custer La Rue and the instrumentalists of the Consort are joined by a quartet of classical male singers (Peter Becker, Alexander Blachly, Paul Shipper and James Weaver) with quite a theatrical sense of humor. The two groups take turns presenting ribald tavern songs of merry old England, interspersed by light, catchy instrumentals listed in the credits as the "Prelewd", the "Interlewd" and a "Fresh Ayre". Drinking, sex and other bodily functions are both celebrated and ridiculed in songs that are cleverly worded and enthusiastically sung, and in at least one case, accompanied by a mysterious instrument (reminiscent of P.D.Q. Bach) called a "fartophone". Especially amusing are the "catches" or rounds, and the new meanings that result from the staggering of words when several different verses are all sung together. It sounds silly, and is silly, but that's the point of it all--celebrating the "earthier flavor" of life 17th and 18th century England. My copy came with a parental advisory sticker stuck fast to the case, but my mother didn't seem overly concerned, and in fact enjoyed it too when I played it for her! For more fun Renaissance vocals, both salacious and serious, try "All At Once Well Met: English Madrigals" by the King's Singers, and "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour: Italy, England, France, Spain, Germany" by the King's Singers and the Consort of Musicke.

5 out of 5 stars Will peak your curiosity and draw you into it's tragic tale with just one listen.......2006-03-07

The Good
Man Without Eyes is a concept album that, you as the listener, has to interpret the meaning of yourself. I will tell you that the album's title refers to one that is blind to the effects of the causes they put into motion through their choices. The album is split into tow parts; Rising and Falling. Driving riffs and piercing arpeggio tones dominate "Take Your Face." Sammus' low-registering vocals enhance the dark tone that is being laid by the instrumentation. A meaty bass line prevails on "Lead Foot." Sammus expresses his main characters frustration with the people that hold back his creativity on this one.

"Hole in the Wall" continues on the dark road that its predecessors set forth, but relies on an acoustic background. However, as the song reaches its peak, the distortion kicks in. A long, progressive style introduction takes you into "Man Without Eyes, Part I." "Split" delves into the darker or more evil side of the album protagonist. "Fair Weather Friend" has a great hard rock riff that's pushed aside by Sammus' intense vocals. Multi-layered vocals help convey the evil turn that this story is about to take. I won't give away the ending to "Man Without Eyes, Part II," but this track is encompassed by emotional piano and vocals. You know what that usually means.

The Bad
I hate having to figure out what concept albums mean.

The Verdict
I'm amazed that Man Without Eyes is The Sammus Theory's first album. Most bands need 3 to 4 albums to accomplish the musical achievements that are displayed here. Though I found the story a little above my comprehension, the music is dark, emotional, and unique. Man Without Eyes will peak your curiosity and draw you into it's tragic tale with just one listen.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the Best CD Ever!.......2005-11-21

Upon purhacsing the CD it looked awesome. But after listining, it was outstanding. All the best rock elements come together with awesome musicians. The bass and guitar have great depth and you can feel the emotion in it. Joe Morris drums are incredible. Its like putting all the best musicians into one band making the best music possible. How could you say no to that? You don't, so you go out and get this awesome album! I would rate this CD in my top 5 MUST HAVE!!! If you love rock, would be the one to get!

5 out of 5 stars you NEED this album.......2005-11-16

The Sammus Theory's debut album "Man Without Eyes", is nothing short of amazing. I've been around music and musicians for many years... but I have never heard anything like this! You can actually "feel" this album! What other album can offer music that ranges from making you want to jump up and break things, (thanks Jim), to songs that you can't help but break out in goosebumps from the melodic piano and orchestra?
You'd be silly not to buy this album for yourself and all of your friends. They will thank you for it.

5 out of 5 stars Great New Band.......2005-11-09

I bought this album at the pre-release party in Idaho Falls and I have to say I love it. Their mixture of metal and soft rock compliment each other well as does Sammus' singing and yelling. The drum tracks by Joe Morris are superb, as are the pianos by Mark Conroy. I've heard some of Sammus' older stuff and I have to say the improvment is amazing. His vocals are so much better than what they used to be and for being the new kid on the block The Sammus Theory has a ton of potential. If you're into Tool/APC, Godsmack, Disturbed, or any other similar bands be sure to check The Sammus Theory.

I wasted a dollar on this horrible excuse for an album, not knowing anything about Crack the Sky other than having heard from others that it was a decent band.

There is nothing redeeming here: the music is uninsprired; the lyrics are nonsense; the production is glossy and bombastic; the whole affair is a mess.

I wish I could get my dollar back but at least I have a usable jewel case.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible, even by 80's CTS standards.......2006-02-21

_Raw_, much like the rest of the 80's CTS albums - _Photoflamingo_, _World In Motion I_, _Dog City_ and _From The Greenhouse_, is marred by substandard songwriting, dated, overly glossy production (gobs of electronic toms, howitzer-in-a-quarry-sounding snare and standard-issue Night Ranger MOR hard rock guitar distortion) in addition to often indifferent John Palumbo vocal performances. Where _Raw_ differs notably is that there is not a single redeeming song here. _World In Motion I_ had "Breakdown", _Dog City_ had "Love Me Like a Terrorist" and the (slightly) underrated _Photoflamingo_ had a few gems as well ( "Only Lonely" and the eerie "The Other Guy"). _Raw_ has....it has unitentional hilarity, like "Elvis is My Daddy" - the saddest, most ham-fisted, amateurish attempt at social satire to be excreted from Palumbo's lackadaisical pen. Or the simpering, whiny "Song For Another Year", which is conceptually from the same place as Billy Joel's "Piano Man" or CTS's own, far superior "We Want Mine" - but will definitely not make you forget either. This is very generic-sounding mid-80s hard rock trying to be lyrically clever and succeeding only at being utterly generic. Both time and Palumbo himself have publicly forsaken this album, and so should you.

    2 out of 5 stars Sad.......2004-06-13

First of all I agree 100% with the review written by John Spokus, read it.The original Crack the Sky from West Virginia/Ohio now of Baltimore was just outstanding! The last great album with the exception "Live at Recher Theatre" was World in Motion after that it seems Crack the Sky lost direction and creativity. While Raw is fair at best their older material is the direction I point you to.This is SAD because of there excellent start as Rolling Stone rated there first album "Best New Album and Artist". Crack the Sky , what the heck happened to you?

1 out of 5 stars CTS Hits Rock Bottom.......2003-05-11

This album is an insult to the memory of a once great band. Well to start with, it's not even a band at all at this point, just singer/songwriter John Palumbo with another guitarist. I don't even think there is a real drummer on it, sounds like a crummy machine you'd use for demo work.In fact the whole thing sounds
like a bedroom songwriter demo. Well you can say that's a pretty cool effect, but that's not the case here, mostly because the songs are just plain dumb. CTS made great albums in the mid 70's, that featured great poduction, playing and orchestration. Seek out the self titled debut,Animal Notes,Safety In Numbers,Live Sky, and White Music if you want to check out what this band really was about. They still make lame, low budget albums (Raw was the beginning of "the comeback" after a long silence)but delight middle aged fans by playing their old favorites in clubs in the Baltimore area, where they are a legend.

Oktober, probably one of the most slept on artists ever to emerge from the midst of the underground. From previous classics such as projekt:building, and the oktober EP it was obvious that Oktober ain't no joke. Now in the '05 "The Art of Raw" is his second offical album, and it doesnt disappoint. Similar to Phonte's "foreign exchange"...otkober teamed up with Q-Tones (producer) from the UK but over an internet connection rather than in person. An the outcome is phenomenal, the beats and lyrics complement each other perfectly, and since the songs on this album have much more significant concepts than previous work, its amazing how they were able to make it match so perfectly. Sick FLOW ,Cuts, Hooks, Lyrics, Beats, Energy .. Oktober's "the Art of Raw" needs to be checked out, and discover an artist that you probably so ashamed you had never heard of! PEACE (P.S. Check out Projekt Building, and the Ep, and madvandal and anything else you can get your hands on, Oktober is the realness!) Props to Q Tones for reppin the UK. It's time to rise! (Peep: Lewis Parker, Jehst, Klashnekoff, Kyza for some phenomenal hiphop) Youll thank me later...somehow.

The way I heard about this release coming to be is that John Du Cann found an aging cassette tape all dusty&filthy that still actually played and the tunes here on 'Live&Raw' were the songs on that cassette.Considering THAT factor,'Live&Raw' is quite a find, specially for all big-time Rooster fans.First four cuts are from a show they played at London's Paris Theatre in 1970 with Carl Palmer on drums. The second four cuts are also from the Paris Theatre in 1971 with Paul Hammond on drums. The tracks that I enjoyed the most are "Friday The 13th","Shabaloo","Tomorrow Night"(one of my personal Rooster favorites) and the twelve-minute version of "I Can't Take No More".The only thing I don't care for on 'Live&Raw' is the repeated introducing of the band prior to nearly every song.Other than that,it's a great title, for a low-fi archive release.Comes with a 16-page full color informative booklet,as most Angel Air discs do.

5 out of 5 stars Raw but rare!.......2000-04-22

I knew this album was not hi-fi quality, the record company have not tried to pretend otherwise, and their honesty is very much appreciated. What really made me buy this album is that this is the only known live recording of Rooster from that era with Carl Palmer (later of ELP) on drums! With these two things in mind I playe the album for the first time, and what happens is that you are transported back to 1970 and you're listening to Atomic Rooster live in concert on the radio! To feel that you are actually back in the time when it was being played is a very odd, but pleasant, experience. Half way through Friday 13th you forget about the radio-quality sound and get into the music, then you realise what an amazing band Rooster were. Just under an hour later, when the album finishes, you feel like you have discovered a side of Rooster you never knew (unless you were ever lucky enough to see them live). The extended versions of I Can't Take No More and Shabaloo are a revelation, and the quality of musicianship is exceptional. Forget the quality of the recording and just listen to the music - let yourself be taken back to 1970 and be a part of it!

Not Rik's best lyrics, but some smokin' blues guitar.
Listen to Head Case. Reminds me of Jeff Beck (no kids... not the talentless Beck you're thinking of)

        Album Description

E-Nastys Debut CD sits at the apex of new Releases in the hip hop Industry this year, the appropriately titled “hard-n-raw” showcases Es crafty lyrical styling, and the syrupy melodies, which has become synonymous of One Dread Production.

Tracks like “love you”, “thug chic”, “she like that”, are all prospective number one hits, females can't help beign hypnotized by Es smooth style and self confidence, and the gangsters among us is captivated by the veil of diamond hard ghetto bravado E displayed on tacks like “nigga what”, and “shit ain't sweet”, “when she walked she wobbled, and she belched from the nut she swallowed”, E rhymed on “nasty pigeons” along with “rough sex”, are sure underground “bombs” on which E-Nasty displays the unmistakable concise delivery and explicit but cleaver lyrical salvo's that characterizes his style which is enamored by hip hop lover “not a damn thing”, is a track that dissects the underworld ghetto enterprises of Camden street gangs with unprecedented precision and clarity.

This album strikes a delicate balance, and has proved that E-Nasty can bring together the hardest of the hardcore, and at the same time be conscious of the listeners in radio land.
