"Fierce emcees that spit fire over sublimely mellow beats. Reminds you what hip-hop is all about."

About the Artist
In their pursuit of lyrical virtuosity and personal investigation, The Guild has developed a sound that has hailed them vanguards of the Kansas City underground Hip Hop scene. Their beats, crafted by the likes of Kid Called Computer, DJ Just, Eggnog, SG, Amen and Joker70, vary from the swelling strings of classical composition to the head-nodding of Hip Hop's boom-bap tradition. As emotional and epressive as it is rugged and hard-hitting The Guild's music appeals to a wide audience without alienating the true heads. After a great deal of local success with EPs, "Idiom" and "Codes and Cyphers", The Guild has released their long awaited full-length album "ReCollection", with cover art by Gear and Sike Style.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2007-06-20

This is an excellent collection of Nichole's best. It features the amazing "Holy", and "Brave" (which made the soundtrack of the movie Catch And Release). Of course, it also features some of her earlier material, such as the honest "To Know You", and "Who You Are." The album includes two new tracks, the soaring hit single "Sunrise", and "Finally Free", the new theme song for Women of Faith. In my opinion, a couple other songs from the Brave cd should have been included here, such as "Lay It Down", and "No More Chains." But if you like Nichole's music and don't own much of it, this a very good disc to pick up.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS LADY!!! LOVE HER MUSIC!!!.......2007-05-20

I cannot express how much I love this tape. When I want to settle into a cooking project, or any time that I can really enjoy Nichole's work is a beautiful time in my day! I love her amazing insightful words, and wonderful musical work.

4 out of 5 stars Nichole Nordeman is great.......2007-05-13

I love this album. I had been wanting to check out Nichole Nordeman's music, and this was the perfect opportunity. There isn't a single song that I can't stand (though there are a couple that I don't like as much as others).

"Holy" (from Woven & Spun) - 4 out of 5. The song is good, telling of how we try and try to DO things to get along and get closer to God, but all we need to do is acknowledge His holiness and let Him lead us. I used to LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this song, but I've just heard it so much that I've gotten a bit tired of it.

"To Know You" (from Wide Eyed) - 4 out of 5. This song is about getting over doubt and coming closer to God. I think this song is good.

"This Mystery" (from This Mystery) - 3.5 out of 5. This is a song about how we go through our life and we sometimes put our daily routine above Jesus instead of being His hands and feet. I don't know, I just don't really like the chorus of this song...it seems to kind of take away the deity of God: "Do you wish, do You want us to breathe again? / Say goodbye to the lines that we've colored in / Brown and gray from day to day / Do You cry, do You hope for all things made new? / Try and try to invoke us to live in You / That we might be the hands and feet of this mystery"

"Every Season" (from This Mystery) - 4.5 out of 5. This is a great song about how God gives us all the good things of every season and how He changes us and makes us grow. The music is a little slow though.

"Sunrise" (new) - 5 out of 5. This song is so encouraging and the music is great. It's about how hard times mold us into the person we are, and that, in those hard times, God is the Sunrise that makes everything right.

"Brave" (from Brave) - 5 out of 5. Great song about not being satisfied with being in the middle ground, but boldly stepping, unashamed, towards God.

"Legacy" (from Woven & Spun) - 5 out of 5. Yet another awesome song, this one about not striving for worldly things that, in the end, don't matter, but striving after heavenly rewards.

"Finally Free" (new) - 3.5 out of 5. It's not that I don't like this song. It's a good song with a good message about Jesus making people free, I just don't find myself listening to it much.

"Is It Any Wonder?" (from Wide Eyed) - 4.5 out of 5. I love this song's unusualness; it has a fun, strange beat. It is about how it isn't any wonder that unbelievers strive after fruitless things if no one tells them the truth.

"I Am" (from Woven & Spun) - 4 out of 5. Beautiful song about how, no matter what we are going through or what age we are, God is always there and never changes and He will help us. It kind of drags on though.

"What If" (from Brave) - 2 out of 5. I just don't really see the point of it. It is a song that asks unbelievers "what if you're wrong?" But how is that applicable to me? Still, I enjoy listening to it sometimes.

"Fool for You" (from This Mystery) - 3 out of 5. A song that states that the singer would do what God says even if though made people think she was a naive fool.

"Even Then" (from Woven & Spun) - 4 out of 5. Thanks Jesus for accepting us just as we are and admits that we need Him more each day. Good song.

"Why?" (from This Mystery - 4.5 out of 5. Beautiful song that, though not very realistic, somewhat captures the pain of Jesus on the cross through the eyes of a child. Some of the lines are kind of awkward.

"Real to Me" (from Brave) - 3 out of 5. A song about the singer wanting God to make Himself real to her. I don't have a problem with this song, I just can't really relate to it.

"Who You Are" (from Wide Eyed) - 4 out of 5. Song about the vastness of our indescribable God.

"River God" (from Wide Eyed) - 4.5 out of 5. A song that has a great picture of God as a river, running over us stones and making us smoother every day.

So, all in all, this is a great album. Nichole has an amazing voice and a talent for writing lyrics. This would be a great album for those who don't have any or maybe have one of her others.

5 out of 5 stars As good as (if not better than) any Mainstream artist.......2007-04-20

I've just recently started listening to Contemporary Christian music and Nichole Nordeman is as good as any of the Singer/Songwriters out there. I tend to lean more towards that type genre, and I've been really impressed with her voice as well as music and lyrics. I totally endorse this CD, whether you're into Contemp. Christian music or not.

4 out of 5 stars Recollection???.......2007-04-12

Was this really needed??? I mean,I like the songs she has put out in the past and have those in my collection but,Come On!!!
This just is another way of getting people's hard earned money to spend on another album to help Nichole pad her purse nicely! ( my thoughts and I'm standing firm on them ) What a world we live in today!

5 out of 5 stars Best AOD Studio Effort Thusfar...No Question........2007-06-19

Though Assembly of Dust is definitely most successful in live settings, Recollection proves that a once stereotyped New England jamband can indeed produce a truly accessible, yet mature record without the incessant and seemlessly directionless noodling thats commonplace amongst other jamband's efforts in the studio.

Therefore, let me establish the fact that Recollection is neither a jam record nor the product of a jamband. It is, on the contrary, an album showcasing Reid Genauer's honest songwriting ability, the band's undeniable musicanship, and perhaps most importantly, how dramatic a change can be in a band's sound from one album to the next. Check out "Whistleclock," "40 Reasons," "Truck Farm," and "Grand Design" and see how authentic their tunes can be. They have an uncanny ability to turn the switch on/off from hard-hitting rock and roll suitable for frat parties to somber ballads about love, hardship, and fate. Nevertheless, the quintet is at its most tight point since their inception in 2002 and with a heavy touring schedule ahead of themsleves this summer, hitting every festival from Wakarusa to Gathering of the Vibes, who knows how long it will take for this unit to fully reach the potential that everyone knows they have.

2 out of 5 stars Wrong suggestion.......2007-05-07

This wasn't a good suggestion from a friend of mine to buy this.
I couldn't appreciate the melody of these soft songs not made for my years 70's rock generetion. Other are my preferred guitar players: Clapton, Townshend, Lee, Gallagher, Springsteeen, Hendrix etc. and other are my beloved rythms.
I'll be happy in providing Amazon with comments about other better purchases.
Thank you for the excellent quality of your general service

4 out of 5 stars Take all the great bands of the 70s, mix, and you have..........2007-04-20

On my first listen through this CD, I was enjoing the plentiful hooks, tasteful musicianship, and wonderful harmonies. Then, digesting the CD again, I started to play "Name the Influence". What a list! For instance-
Track 1, Grand Design, is very reminisicent of the Band.
Track 2, Telling Sue - sounds as though 1971-era Grateful Dead is playing the Phish song "Back on the Train"
Track 3, Zero to the Skin - this is influenced by Billy Joel channeling John Lennon on Billy's song "Scandinavian Skies"
Track 4, Whistle Clock - Steely Dan with the Pure Prarie League singing harmony
Track 5, Samuel Aging - Mark Knopfler playing guitar for the Outlaws
Track 6, 40 Reasons - Neil Young through and through

etc. etc. With echoes of Little Feat, and maybe some Alan Parsons. Whipped up into a very pleasant souffle of good music. Tasty to the ears, and each song is distinctive. The only complaint is that, for a CD that's only 47 minutes long, the vocals start to get a little monotonous by the end. And there's no extensive jams like on their previous CD 'The Honest Hour'. But the songs are tight as a result, which is also pleasing. So a very nice album that I'm sure will get a lot of listens.

5 out of 5 stars i saw beauty.......2007-03-23

Reid Genauer, Nate Wilson and the gang have done it again... beautifully crafting songs that paint pictures in your mind so bright you can see them come to life as you listen.
From beginning to end, this record really holds you in and never lets go. And, like other timeless albums, the more you listen, the better it gets.
Bravo.

5 out of 5 stars FEMALE SEBASTIEN BACH !!!.......2004-04-10

CONCRETE BLONDE IS A BIT OF A MYSTERY BAND. THEY CAN BE GOTHIC, ROCK N ROLL, POP AND EVEN NEW WAVE. BUT MOST ASTONISHING POINT IS VOCALS OF LEAD SINGER JOHNETTE, IT'S LIKE CHER MEETS SEBASTIEN BACH OF SKID ROW. VOCALS AMAZED ME THEN AND AMAZES ME NOW. AND OF COURSE "JOEY" IS A TIMELESS PIECE. THERE ARE LOT OF GOOD TRACKS AS WELL. YOU GOTTA OWN THIS CD, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, YOU WON'T REGRET !

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and underrated........2004-02-09

I can't imagine why this is currently out of print, but it's the best place to start your "Concrete Blonde" collection for sure. It also takes pretty evenly from their first 5 albums. Included here is "True", "God Is A Bullet", "Joey", "Someday", and "Heal It Up". Everything on here is great, but I do miss "Song For Kim", "Long Time Ago", and "End Of The Line". Also the original "Bloodletting(The Vampire Song)" would be nice, and maybe a b-side like "I Want You". But we do get "Everybody Knows" from the "Pump Up The Volume" soundtrack, and a live "Mercedes Benz", among 16 other tracks. As far as collections go, you may have to settle for "Classic Masters", or "Still In Hollywood", but I would search for this myself.

5 out of 5 stars Traveling Companion.......2002-11-23

I was lucky enough to see CB on their first national tour ('87/'88?) in a small club in Rochester, NY with about 10 people(fortunately for me and friend.)
I had their debut album and loved every second of it. We loved our own personal concert and we got to come up on stage and dance with them as they jammed. I've been a fan ever since.
"Recollection" always travels with me in the car......it's my staple.....can't imagine life without it.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this album!!.......2002-01-02

I don't often get to say that, but this time I mean it.

It's over two years since I bought this CD, and only just recently have I gotten into it. It's suddenly become one of my favorites.

One thing I am a bit curious about: Why is the version of The Vampire Song on this album call an "edit?" It's a completely different rendition from the one on Bloodletting, and I for one like the Recollection version a LOT better!

I can't wait to get the videos, and check out a few other things, like No Talking Just Head.

And one more thing: Mercedes Benz is about my least favorite track just to listen to, but that doesn't mean it isn't impressive. Johnette manages to out-Janis Janis!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing.......2000-11-15

I first heard of this marvelous band about the same time that most of America did...1990--"Joey". I liked them well enough but it wasn't until about five years later when a friend of mine bought this CD to replace her worn out one. I listened to it and immediately went out and bought my own copy. I made as many people listen to it as I possibly could. Four years down the road I made my girlfriend listen to it (she had never even heard of CB) she instantly loved it and one upped me. She went out and bought "Recollection" which I have since stolen from her. I would have a new favorite track on it daily...which in turn made me go out and buy all of the CB albums so I could hear all the songs that weren't considered "great hits". Needless to say, there isn't much of their music that I don't absolutely love. How could anybody not fall in love with Johnette's phenominal, diverse voice? Even the few songs that I don't particularly care for are worth a few listens. Only Johnette could do such a wonderful cover of "Mercedes Benz", you could almost believe Janis was reincarnated as Johnette. For anyone that even remotely likes this now defunct band...buy this CD and you will be a fan. A couple of candles and this CD and you're looking at the most relaxing evening ever.

5 out of 5 stars Old Classics Given New Life.......2007-06-25

This album is excellent. I don't see anything wrong with a cover band. No, they don't have their original singer and no, they haven't recorded anything new since they've been together. My argument is this: do Elvis impersonators record new music? No. Does Paul McCartney do lead vocals in a Beatles tribute band? No. The music stays the same, all that changes is the people who sing it. And the singer in Creedence Clearwater Revisited does a fine job. There are some who say that this doesn't sound like the original, but there's a reason for that: IT ISN'T THE ORIGINAL! They are a wonderful cover band. Nothing more, nothing less. The original CCR will never come back, so enjoy these great musicians playing great versions of great songs.

5 out of 5 stars The best CD Rock Collection.......2007-05-21

This is a double CD recorded live, simply the best !

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-02-11

I did take the time to read some of the reviews on this page. It seems like some people are dismissing it because it isn't the original band. And I will be honest, it is not. But think about this:

Page and Plant sound great playing old Zeppelin tunes.
Paul McCartney solo can play awesome versions of old Beatles songs.
Pete and Roger still play the old Who songs very well.

My advice to those wondering about this disc: don't worry about who's in the band, whether or not it's the original, or even that the original songwriter isn't the one performing. These are still great versions of great songs.

Another way to look at it: think of a CCR tribute band, throw in the two original members, and you've got this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Open your ears!.......2006-05-25

Sure, I KNOW I'm gonna offend some of you out there, but Fogerty has lost the voice that made him so amazing! John Tristao sounds more like Fogerty to me than John Fogerty himself! Back in the Creedence heyday, John Fogerty's vocals were at the top of their game, strong and powerful. Now, when I listen to Premonition, I find myself shutting it off. What made his voice great is gone, if you don't believe me, listen to "Fortune Son" on Premonition, thin and lacking. John Tristao isn't 60's CCR, but he's a better choice than anyone else!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Interpretations of Classic Rock Songs.......2006-05-07

John Tristao is not John Fogerty but is outstanding in singing Creedence Clearwater Revival songs. Tristao entertains Creedence Clearwater Revival listeners with no objections from the crowd.

Elliot Easton is remarkable in his guitar interpretations and completes the crowds enjoyment of the bands' performance. This is a performance that merits a DVD release for listeners of Creedence Clearwater Revival songs which are genuine classics in music history.

Stu Cook and Doug "Cosmo" Clifford have managed to meet up with excellent musicians to interpret these song gems. The result is a very entertaining concert of classic rock songs from a classic rock group with two of it's original members.

4 out of 5 stars Most of the Best of the Early "Sam".......2007-06-17

This compilation samples material from Phillips' first four albums (Dancing with Danger, Black and White in a Grey World, Beyond Saturday Night, and The Turning), including previously unavailable versions and one "home demo". Most fans probably think of The Turning as her first "Sam Phillips" album, even though it was originally credited to "Leslie Phillips". Three tracks from that album ("Love is Not Lost", "Answers Don't Come Easy", and "Libera Me") are included here, and indeed these compare well with her later work; but the other tracks (all originals, except the cover of Mark Heard's "Heart of Hearts") show that The Turning and her later work are cut from the same cloth as her early songwriting.

The acoustic versions of "Your Kindness" and "No One But You" would have fit in perfectly on Cruel Inventions, and their inclusion here makes this collection worth buying even for those of us who own the early Leslie Phillips albums. The demo of "Walls of Silence" is interesting, though unexceptional. The version of "You're the Same" also appears to differ from the original album version.

The remainder of the tracks ("I'm Finding", "When the World Is New", "By My Spirit", and the Russ Taff duet "Strength of My Life") are mostly-forgettable CCM pop ballads. I would happily trade these for the Lauperesque cheese of "Dancing with Danger" or the trite-but-endearing message of "Powder Room Politics", which were sadly not included. Overall, though, this collection presents most of the material that might interest a "Sam Phillips" fan and very little of the material we'd probably rather forget.

5 out of 5 stars You Wrap Me Up With Your Expectations.......2006-08-09

Leslie Phillips put out four great Contemporary Christian albums, but she couldn't resolve herself with the expectations of the CCM industry - it was becoming much more about slick packaging, sex appeal, and an image than about ministry and thoughtful, truthful lyrics - unfortunately, this is usually what the public has responded to. Being only 21 (and probably quite optimistic, naive, and vulnerable) when her first album was released, Phillips quickly discovered this duality of the Contemporary "Christian" Music market. Leslie's last album, The Turning, was a scathing diatribe against the double standards of this industry (like "You wrap me up with your expectations...") - otherwise artists like Bob Bennett and Mark Heard would have been held in much higher esteem in the CCM market.

Leslie then changed her name to Sam Phillips (no relation to the Sun Records mogul) and started putting out secular albums. As of this writing, she's had a new album released every 2-3 years, and is currently at work on a new one.

Recollections, her greatest hits package, showcases Leslie's four albums, and is excellent quality music throughout - some upbeat, some gentle ballads, vocally in the vein of Leigh Nash (Sixpence None the Richer) or Cyndi Lauper. The "booklet" / liner notes are disappointing - a single double-fold piece of paper with track listing (with source by album) and brief production credits.

Since there is not a track listing here on Amazon, I will include one:

3 out of 5 stars Alter Ego.......2005-01-15

How's this for an odd juxtaposition: I saw her perform as "Leslie" at the Cornerstone Festival in the Summer of '84 or '85, back in my "intervarsity" days. This was around the time of her hit CCM single "Strength of my life." Aside from her kick-a** performance, all I can remember is it rained in our tent and some cultnik tried to recruit us. Cut to London's Hammersmith Odeon in 1991: here she is as "Sam," opening for Elvis Costello. I must admit, I much prefer her second incarnation. I can remember the most surreal sensation one night at Caberet Metro in Chicago when I looked up to see her video "Holding on to the Earth" emblazened across an entire wall. Nowadays I look forward to her charming little interludes on Gilmore Girls. BTW, she played the she-bi*** in Die Hard (3) with a Vengeance. More power to her, I say.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introduction to a Great Artist.......2004-02-05

Even though I grew up in the 1980's, I didn't seriously start listening to Christian music until the early 90's, so I completely missed this wonderful artist. It was in college that a friend introduced me to "Strength of My Life" as a praise chorus. I immediately fell in love with the heartfelt cry of dependence on God. Almost immediately, I discovered a cover of her song "By My Spirit." This song's promise from God of help and encouragement in life's trials also struck a chord with me. Even so, it was years later before I tracked down any more of Leslie's music.

When I finally decided to get this CD, I immediately fell in love with it. It covers a range from the upbeat fun of "No One But You" and "Love is Not Lost" to the more contemplative "Answers Don't Come Easy" and the encouraging "Your Kindness." It also includes the originals of the two songs I mentioned above, including the "real" verses to "Strength of My Life." (Turns out what I thought were verses are part of the chorus.)

What I love most about all the lyrics on this CD is their honesty. They range from knowing God and His promises to the doubt that comes when we face trials. But everything is explored in an unflinching manner that makes sense even if it doesn't fall back on the pat answers that Christians sometimes rely on too much.

Unfortunately, the albums this CD came from are long out of print. But the songs collected here are certainly worth tracking down to encourage and uplift you no matter what you're going through.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous!.......2003-03-09

Lost her love? Give me a break! Leslie was great and I owned all her vinyl and, now, some of her CD's. Sam, however, is unbelievable! Her sense of the ridiculousness of "religion" and the "christian music industry" is completely honest and thought provoking. Her voice has matured, her lyrics are that of an experienced musician and the influence of her incredibly talented husband (T-Bone Burnett...NOT the "rap artist" T-Bone) is invaluable. Martinis and Bikinis is another great find and the CD's that followed showcase her growing talent and passion for truth. Go Sam!!

5 out of 5 stars Feel the movie in music.......2005-10-09

This soundtrack is so far one of my favorite, listening it all the time. It still bring me as much emotion as the Movie. A great success in the selection of the musics illustrating the story...

5 out of 5 stars Magical!.......2005-10-05

Ever since the day I downloaded the piece "Morgan-Amor Tristis" I knew I would love whatever CD came with it. I was 100% correct. This album contains songs that are so breathtakingly gorgeous I had to stop whatever I was doing just to listen to them.
Of course, as I mentioned earlier, "Morgan-Amor Tristis" Is the jewel of this CD, but I found the choral pieces to be equaly beautiful. "Dea Cantat- The Goddess Sings" is the second piece song as a solo with no instrumentation. The vocalist carries the song beautifuly and creates a simplistic joy.
Towards the end, the song "Cora de Dea- Voices of Goddess" (an instrumental and full choral version of "Dea Cantat") gives us a fitting finale.
I also enjoyed the songs "Celestin- Seditianis Auctor" and "Crystallus Malus- Dark Shrine" for their sense of hidden darkness and despare.
ANd finally the song "Spring Unchanged" brought with it the perfect sense of the season and all the characters.
This was my first order with Amazon and so I didn't know when to expect the Cd. To my delight, it arrived in less than four days! Thank you sooooo much!
This is a great CD. For all manga and anime lovers, this is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars A worthy soundtrack to the movie.......2005-05-15

I bought this soundtrack CD right after I watched the movie on DVD. I enjoy the soundtrack as much as the movie. The orchestral pieces are particularly memorable. I had it literally playing for days as background music on my computer. It is still one of the few soundtrack CDs that I play regularly.

5 out of 5 stars For your information.......2005-01-21

For your information, Nobuo Uematsu, the pioneer in gaming music of Final Fantasy, was involved in AMG movie soundtrack. So you can expect the best of the best and this is really an album of masterpiece with emotions.

It is pianist András Schiff's near total identification with Janácek's idiom that makes these performances so special. This affinity is felt immediately in his reading of In the Mists, in which Schiff is able to evoke the tranquility of the second movement as easily as he captures the folklike simplicity of the third. The date 1.X.1905 in the title of the Piano Sonata refers to the date of the shooting of a Czech worker by Hapsburg troops. The first movement, marked "Presentiment," is spookily atmospheric, while the chilling second movement, "The Death," leaves a powerful impression. Schiff demonstrates exemplary control, so that the effect is peaceful rather than meandering. On an Overgrown Pathis Janácek at his most concentrated: in particular, the very Czech lachrymose quality of "In Tears" is all the more powerful for its simplicity. Janácek's chosen range of keyboard sonorities is remarkably wide, and Schiff manages to use these to convey the full emotional spectrum. Although these performances do not displace Firkusny's for DG, they certainly offer an entirely convincing alternative viewpoint. ECM's exemplary recording sets the seal on this recommendation. --Colin Clarke

5 out of 5 stars Heart over Head.......2005-04-11

Firkusny studied with Janacek...almost all reviewers agree that his interpretation is truest to Janacek's intent. Yet in head-to-head listenings, it's the Schiff performance that I prefer.

I find the Firkusny performance to be clinical and dry as compared to Schiff, who is more lyrical and poetic. Firkusny may be playing it how Janacek intended, but musicians are artists and are free to interpret a piece any way they like. For this piece, I choose Schiff's interpretation.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely, Dark, and Deep.......2002-07-21

It's late November and you're walking out in the woods. There's a crisp coolness underfoot and in the air. And you've just lost a dear friend to time and circumstance....

That is the type of Recollection which this music evokes for me. The excellent liner notes by Imre Kertesz and Robert Cowan refer to how each one of these evocative pieces is like a short story; each contains its own inner world: the "world in a grain of sand." There is the same mystical element present that one encounters in Arvo Part's music, but there is an impressionistic element as well, more lyrical than Debussy, and more emotional.

The magnificent two-movement Sonate (1.X.1905) is easily the highlight of the album. It was written to commemorate a protesting Czech student executed on that date by German troops. The second movement (entitled simply, "Death") still has, as the liner notes aptly say, "the power to shock." There is an existential element to this music, that "poses the eternally unanswered and unanswerable question of the human condition" (Kertesz).

In response to another reviewer who has stated that the recording's sound quality is lacking: I have listened to this recording on my car's cd player, and there it does sound rather like too much of an echo is present. But on my home stereo system, with quality speakers and subwoofer, the slight echo actually enhances the haunting quality of this music. It is, for me, that echo, that silencio between the notes, that makes this music and this performance, unforgettable.

3 out of 5 stars Janacek with no bite.......2002-01-27

Perhaps it's unfair to compare Schiff to Firkusny, who actually knew Janacek and kept his music always close to his heart. I'm not intimating that Schiff does not know these pieces, but to the contrary, he brings a carefully studied and balanced performance of the pieces. However, the centerpiece of this disc, Janacek's piano sonata, is a disappointment. The first movement, "Presentiment", does not have the anger that Janacek intends. Janacek was a very programatic composer, and Schiff somewhat stifles the edgy passion of this movement. The second movement, "Death", is quite good in contrast. Schiff's Schubertian touch adds fine eloquence to this intense and despondent movement. "In the Mists" pieces are played with fine sensibility and sensitiveness, and other miniatures come off with lyricism, but be it his approach or the acoustics or the Bosendorfer piano that Schiff used... there just is no sense of passion, an element of unmediated emotion. Still, the benchmark is my well-traveled double disc Firkusny on Deutsche Gramophone, with a fine, thrillingly jagged account of the first movement of the sonata.

5 out of 5 stars Out of this world!.......2001-10-23

Andras Schiff has received great acclaim for his Bach and Schubert performances. I really can't understand why. However, I do like Schiff's interpretations of Scarlatti, Mozart and 20th century music. I am very fond of his contribution to the Carter disc that he made a couple of years ago. Thus, it came as no surprise when I found out that it was Schiff, whom I heard in some superb Janacek on NPR lately.

I got familiar with these works thanks to the folks at Naxos, but here we get playing at a whole different level. The works are performed with a sense of "bitter-sweetness", that is reminiscent of the late piano works of Brahms. Schiff performs Janacek as the Czech equivalent of Debussy to great effect. For me this works better than Firkushny's more Dvorak-based interpretation.

Schiff's tribute to Janacek is hauntingly beautiful and should make its way to the collection of anyone with a serious interest in the piano repertoire.

One small comment. Uncharacteristically for ECM, the piano sound is a bit disappointing. The timbre tends towards the nasal/metallic and is very much at odds with the sound that I heard Schiff produce in concert

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and Timely.......2001-09-26

In this time of great tragedy in our nation, music helps ease the grief and anxiety we feel our souls. This phenomenal CD of piano music by the polish composer Leos Janacek, played by Andras Schiff, is hauntingly beautiful. The music plays to the heart.

This music is guaranteed to tune out the world, and take you to another place entirely. Good for meditation or trance work. A combination of electronic music, "nature" sounds, and a bit of science fiction-like space age audio.

5 out of 5 stars Or Am I Dreaming?.......2006-07-19

Wow! I can't get over this! Too good to be true! My favorite line-up of this great group in wonderful concert performance with great sound from 1970. This beats the offical "Live At Queen Elizabeth Hall' release by miles. Thanks to Dave Cousins and crew for putting this out and as always I want more. Grab this while you can, it's worth it at any price!

5 out of 5 stars Wow, nice!.......2006-05-06

I was expecting a "rare material, best available sound" release. I knew Cousins remixed this from the original tape, but I got the feeling it was inferior quality to start with, hence no release until it could be considered "historical", ala a number of the King Crimson Collector's Club discs are. Far from it - the sound is great, perhaps even better than "Antiques and Curios" or at least as good. And the performances are first class (a few missed notes here and there, just enough to prove it wasn't overdubbed into "correctness" in the studio). If you were a fan of the early folky Strawbs (with Rick Wakeman) you need not debate this one - it's a treasure.
