As musical activists in the 1960s civil rights movement, the Staple Singers were powerful voices for equality and change. And more than 40 years after Pops's daughter Mavis spent a night in a West Memphis, Arkansas, jail at the behest of a racist cop, she still remembers the terror of the experience, as well as the counsel of Dr. Martin Luther King. That episode is at the centerpiece of "My Own Eyes," one of the most moving offerings on this collection of songs of racial struggle in the '50s and '60s, produced by guitarist Ry Cooder and featuring backing from the original Freedom Singers and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Throughout, the album proves both emotionally chilling and spiritually uplifting. On J.B. Lenoir's "Down in Mississippi" and Marshall Jones's "In the Mississippi River," for example, Cooder makes fine use of pounding percussion and snaky electric guitar to capture the danger and fear inherent in the Deep South at the time, while the title song and "Jesus Is on the Main Line" draw on gospel and the traditional framework of church hymns to promise positive solutions. Staples, who adlibs on several cuts, connecting the injustice of yesterday to the continuing marginalization of blacks in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, remains a remarkable performer, employing a throaty sensuality that rises from a deep well of tremulous emotion. It takes me back to the days when ordinary people inspired by a dream decided to quench our hunger and thirst for justice in the fountains of mercy and love.
Back then, some people thought legalized segregation in America would never come to an end. But those of us in the Civil Rights Movement were inspired by a higher calling. And even if it cost us our very lives, "we weren't gone to let nobody turn us `round". We believed that the action of peace, the way of non-violence, and the power of love could overcome our oppression and remind our oppressors of their own humanity. Through the power of this faith our nation witnessed a non-violent revolution of values, a revolution of ideas that changed America forever.
The music you are listening to right now was the soul of that revolution. It was this music that gave us hope when it seemed like all hope was gone. It was the heartbeat of this music and its steady, reassuring message that bound us together as one solid force. Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Recognizing that there's no such thing as bad publicity, manager-Svengali Malcolm McLaren molded the Pistols into the most confrontational, nihilistic band rock & roll had ever seen. Propelled by Johnny Rotten's maniacal vocals, Steve Jones's buzz-saw guitar, and (most importantly) bass player Glen Matlock's hook-filled compositional skills, the Pistols' early singles "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save the Queen" defined the raging style of British punk. By the time they recorded their lone 1977 album, Matlock had been bounced, replaced by the image-correct but utterly untalented (and ultimately group-dooming) Sid Vicious. This is the only 'true'Sex Pistols album and really the only one you need.
Considered by many to be one of the front-runners of punk, but I do believe Iggy Pop and The (Mighty) Stooges did Punk better. Having said that,this has been one of my first punk albums at the tender age of 11 and it instantly opened my ears to a whole new sound of Rock that I never realized existed.
Immediately I could feel the Raw intensity of Johnny Rotten's maniacal voice, snotty, in your face type of attitude bleeds through the speakers from the Wildman that is Rotten himself. One of the first songs - "Bodies" is a perfect example of the pure punk attitude I am referring to - Animalistic fury. Screaming bloody mess! Real Brit Punk, heck Real punk period, out of 1977.
There have been many imitators since The Pistols, but why not pick up the original, in all it's aggressive devestating glory (?)
I don't think I ever heard a debut punk record as good as this. They just don't exist, but yes, this album here did help me on my search for real punk and DIY type bands.
Highlights of mine are "Bodies" - "God Save the Queen" - "Pretty Vacant" & of course the song that the band is known for "Anarchy In the U.K."- Turn it Up, Loud! (the way it's meant to be heard)
...Forget The Clash, sure they were a great band, but if Anarchy had a voice it would be Johnny Rotten's.

Johnny's voice is snide and proud. Why shouldn't it be , he had the best set of rags a punk at the time could wear, but getting back to the music and his voice, it's just a very well put together collection.
I love his opening of "Anarchy" with his sarcastic, sinister chuckle!
I agree that The Sex Pistols are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT musically than The Clash who are New Wave music ,like Blondie.
"Classic Vintage Punk" is what I consider The Sex Pistols, and this CD is EXCELLENT !
"Anarchy", "God Save the Queen" are real pioneer songs now. The political venom of the period.
Also "Submission" and "Pretty Vacant are just as aggressive and exciting as they were back then.
Highly recommended and deservingly over rated !

I love all kinds of music, play guitar myself and was never into the punk scene and what went with it.
However, I'll never forget the first time I heard this album and the impact it had on me. It was devastating.
I may have Mozart or Sarah Brightman or The Stones or Coldplay in the CD changer tonight. Maybe Buddy Guy or some Verdi.
Then every so often I will stick in my well worn copy of NMTBITSP and from the moment I hear those marching boots and Steve Jones thunderous Les Paul crashing out the opening chords to Anarchy in the UK ...........I am suddenly 19 years old again with "no feelings..for any body else....except for myself...my beautiful self". Utterly unique and one of rock & roll's brilliant defining moments.
God save the Queen.

I also enjoy the style of music FP seems to gravitate towards. They're sort of mildly dark, a grey feel, and they tell stories without telling stories. I dunno, give em a listen and decide for yourself.
Some hope for rock?.......2005-05-26
I knew they were "Sting's son's band", but I am a jaded 54 year old who has seen it all starting with my first concert being Hendrix in the fall of 1968. I went in early to see.
There is so much junk being passed off as popular music these days, heck Philadelphia even lost its only decent Alt Rock station earlier this year. Sons of popular performers have really done very little but coat-tail on daddy's name.
In spite of or because of his Father's influence Joe has put together a band that really impressed me. Live they were an opening act that you didn't really want to get off the stage. I bought the album at intermission (sorry, Amazon) and have been listening to it since, wishing I had been familiar with them prior to seeing them. Interestingly enough, I recognized nearly every track from the live performance first time round.
An occasional sophomoric lyric belies Joe's youth, but generally for a debut from a famous son this is a very hopeful album that is damn good as a stand-alone. Somewhat remininsent of the energy and pathos that forged the Police and the occasional uncanny resemblance of Joe's voice to Gordon's (especially "Silence"), this band is its own and by any standard of rock a band to be eagerly followed.
I look forward to what is hopefully to come and the next opportunity to see them in a live show.

While my evaluation was initially instigated by seeing the band perform, opening for Sting at 2 shows, actually listening to the CDs brings FP's package together. The band's lyrics shower the listener with an array of emotions, while the musical dexterity displayed by each member launches them into a genre all their own. Yes, FP has its share of faux-ballads discussing relationships and life-lessons, however they are subversively concealed behind boisterous and genre-leaping songwriting. While the band itself cites NIRVANA as a distinct influence, I am more inclined to believe that FP's style is a monstrous hybrid of RADIOHEAD, MAROON 5, early POLICE, PORCUPINE TREE (check out the `ghost track' following "Wise", loaded with esoteric, progressive rock overtones) and a touch of early DURAN DURAN (especially in the lyric department). I would guess that FP wanted to get out of the gates and show the world a little bit of everything that comprises them, and this debut CD does just that. That in itself is probably the album's one downside - the fact that they move in so many different directions during the course of one disc that the listener is not offered a solid impression of what the band is truly about.
However, one cannot hold that against a young band on its debut release. New acts are usually pressured by labels to create one or two strong `radio-friendly' cuts, leaving the rest of the album for the band to noodle with as filler. However, rather than play that game, FP went out on a limb and broke down walls that would otherwise limit them to one sect of listenership. As there may be one or two songs on the disc that I would chalk up as `growing pains', there are still ten very strong tracks showing the range and intensity of a band that is primed for evolution and success. Excellent standout tracks, in addition to the aforementioned ghost track, include the funky "Listen To My Babe", the incredibly cynical "Hate", and the mixed metaphor "Cigarette". I implore you, check out FICTION PLANE; the best band you've never heard on the radio!

once i found out who was opening for sting, and to find out that it was his son... i'd figure i'd wait and see how he sounded before getting the albums... Joe's voice is fantastic.. a nice cross between early sting and bono... and with good looks to boot!!.. thank god for nearly front row seating right in line with the mic... as soon as his set was done, i had to rush right out and get both albums (this and the ep) before they sold out...
"cigarette" is definitely one of my fav's...

Nearly four decades after recording her influential classic Tracy Nelson Country, the former lead singer of Mother Earth--and a legend of white urban blues--returns to the country idiom with a collection of her favorite songs. In a stunning turn, she kicks off the album with an inventive rendition of the western-jazz classic "Cow Cow Boogie," inspired not by the Tennessee Ernie Ford version, but Ella Fitzgerald's 1944 hit with the Ink Spots. (Here, Terry Tucker, Nelson's hair cutter, provides the charismatic black male vocal.) If nothing else that follows this charming performance is quite as grabby, Nelson instead offers up a ton of integrity in her emotionally resonant takes on Johnny Cash's "I Still Miss Someone," Jim Reeves's "Four Walls," the Everly Brothers' "I Wonder If I Care as Much," Don Gibson's "Oh, Lonesome Me" (framed as a Cajun caper), and Randy Sharp's elegant breakup song "New Way Out," with its exquisitely pained chorus. Nelson restrains her powerhouse alto--an instrument as authoritative as it is expansive--to take the focus off herself and emphasize melody and lyric. Her natural R&B leanings come to the fore on a reworking of Ernest Tubb's "Thanks a Lot" (shades of Brenda Lee), as well as on the warm and comforting "Stranger at My Door," a staple of her live repertoire for years. But the Wisconsin native best proves her understanding of the country genre on "Salt of the Earth," a song she co-wrote with Alice Newman Vestal and Guy Clark, who also contributes an affecting, if creaky, recitation. In recounting the plights of her Dickson, Tennessee, neighbors, all of whom lived by their "strong mind/simple creed," she forges a rock-solid connection to country's core--front-porch story songs about family and friends, life and death. After 38 Years, Tracy Sings Country - Again.......2007-07-28
Stranger at My Door is her first pure country effort since her legendary 1969 album, Tracy Nelson Country, but this is a different Tracy Nelson album for other reasons. While previous albums have underscored her powerful, soulful voice, she has chosen this time out to let singing take a back-seat to her other talent, that of choosing material that represents songwriting at its finest. Although anyone who has caught one of Tracy's recent recitals can attest that her voice has lost none of its power and depth (including me, having seen Tracy only months ago at B. B. Kings in NYC), here she has chosen a quieter path, allowing the material to be the real star. I have long opined that Tracy's real talent lies in her supremely exquisite taste, given that her awesome voice is, as she herself has suggested, merely a fact of her physicality. This ability, particularly in the fluff of today's music world, is not to be taken lightly. I have always trusted Tracy to deliver the goods both vocally and in her choice of material, even as I have never been sure which of these talents I admire more.
I had always hoped, with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek, that Tracy might someday record a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. Considering that Stranger at My Door is being touted as a return to her country roots, it is interesting that the album kick-starts with Cow Cow Boogie, a cowboy-jazz novelty number from Ella's Decca days, featuring an exact recreation of Ella's 1943 swing arrangement with the Ink Spots. Tracy's voice emphasizes a greater western inflection than Ella's jazz reading; as always, Tracy's fresh approach neither invites comparison to the original nor makes you long to hear it. After this light-hearted romp, she gets down to business with a set of traditional country ballads sure to please even the most demanding of purists.
One hallmark of every new Tracy Nelson release is that my favorite track is apt to shift with each listen. Jim Reeves' Four Walls grabbed me immediately, her unusually restrained vocal showing off her ability to convey emotion impeccably, and after this second track, I pronounced the album a winner. But she floored me completely with the next song, Salt of the Earth, a composition of her own poetry, assisted by the able efforts of Guy Clark and Alice Newman. As soon as I heard it, Salt of the Earth became a favorite. A paean to country living and the "strong-minded, simple creed" of clean living, the imagery is nuanced and hauntingly beautiful. A songwriter of modesty, many fans often overlook Tracy's sizable writing abilities, which is partly her own fault; often in concert she will announce the songwriter for each song, then fall silent when she gets to her own material.
After Salt of the Earth, she presents a perfectly-paced rendition of Johnny Cash's I Still Miss Someone, a staple that has been covered by more folk singers than country crooners. Continuing the album's thesis of heartfelt inflection and simple interpretation, she then tackles several more fairly well-known but lesser covered country gems. With Randy Sharp's New Way Out, the Everly Brothers' I Wonder If I Care As Much, and Brenda Lee's R & B tinged Thanks a Lot, she showcases her uncanny ability to pick outstanding material, while forgoing her usual vocal bravado.
The remaining tracks are each interesting enough to merit detailed discussion. To be frank, I have never liked The Three Bells, a song made famous in the 1950's by The Browns, or the schmaltzy, overly sentimental treatments that Chanteuse Edith Piaf recorded in both French and English. Many years ago, the man who introduced me to Tracy's music used to make fun of its maudlin sentiment, once telling me that, "Tracy would never be caught dead recording a corny song like that; she has too much taste and class". Well, aside from the obvious comment of, "Never say never", he didn't consider one truism that I have long since learned to count on - Tracy Nelson is not just any singer. Very few vocalists could take a mushy song like The Three Bells and turn it into a work of art, but that's precisely what she's done. In her hands, its unbridled sentimentality is transformed into a piece so beautiful, that I am almost ashamed of my previous contempt for it. Few vocalists could take a song I had heretofore despised and make me hear new things in it, but Tracy has.
Before closing on an upbeat tempo with her first foray into Western Swing (Oh, Lonesome Me), we get yet two more pieces of country balladry, so stunning in their beauty and Tracy's gorgeous interpretation that (at least for this week) I think I may have found my two favorite tracks. First is the waltz, I Never Loved Anyone More, originally recorded by Eddy Arnold and later covered by Lynn Anderson. The first listen made me freeze my CD player on "Repeat" until I had memorized every word of its achingly beautiful lyrics. Deceptively simple in melody and phrasing, it conjured up memories of lost love I'd forgotten for decades, inspiring feelings both bittersweet and genuine.
But although I Never Loved Anyone More is sufficient for me to declare this release a satisfying success, and possibly her strongest album since her 1996 gem, Move On, there is still one more winner - the title track. Stranger at My Door proves that, at age 62, Tracy still has what her fans have been raving about for years. I hear things in this vocal that echo Tracy's best recordings of her celebrated golden era, even if many fans cannot agree exactly what period of her career that was. For every fan I've encountered who insists that Tracy's best records were made with Mother Earth in the late 1960's, I find as many who agree with me that her voice and musicianship peaked in the 1990's and continues to this day. Stranger At My Door is a gentle reproach to a long lost companion, a sort of lullaby to rekindled friendship, her voice as warm as syrup on a stack of steaming pancakes, and every bit as delicious.
Before the month is out, I expect to change my mind a dozen times about which of the eleven songs here is the outstanding champion, but anyone who loves country music, or anyone who appreciates dazzling vocals, is sure to be pleasantly surprised by this album. It's taken Tracy 38 years to come full circle and produce a follow-up to "Tracy Nelson Country"; I only hope she doesn't wait that long to record classic country again.

Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." If Josh Groban's unabashedly melodramatic musical fusion inspires grousing on both sides of the classical/pop pundit divide, the screams of the (mostly) young female fans that punctuate these 2004 performances at L.A.'s historic Greek theater better underscore the real point. This set's CD and more expansive DVD complement each other well; if anything, supplemented by a live string ensemble and crack backing band, they're a warmer, more focused showcase for the singer's talents than the studio albums that made his meteoric fame. The waving of the light sticks was started at the very beginning of his first tour, mainly to show him how much the fans appreciated the concerts. The first idea was to wave them during the last verse of "You Raise Me Up," when the choir came out. Later, fans added another show of support by waving blue light sticks during "Vincent (Starry Starry Night."
OK, if you still find that annoying, that's your right. However, the flag waving at the end of "To Where You Are" was special. This concert was filmed on September 11, and the flags were waved at the end of "To Where You Are" for those who were lost, and the families of those who were lost, on 9/11/2001.
It's your right if you still find these things annoying. I just thought I'd try to help you to understand.
Since this is a forum for giving our opinions of the DVD, I have to say that I love it. He has a beautiful voice and I love listening to him under any circumstance. The DVD is wonderful, IMHO.

My review won't be as good, but I want to give a shout out to a very good rock artist- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Whoops, I meant, Neil Young and Crazy Horse. hehe
Rust Never Sleeps was a very popular record for Neil Young back in the late 70's. My dad thinks it was Neil's most popular album, but I can't say whether there's any truth to that.
Anyway, everyone knows track one. It's great. A dark, creepy and interesting tune that one is. "Thrasher" is almost straight-up country, and it's very good. I enjoy it. "Pocahontas" almost brings me to tears with its amazing beauty, along with "Sail Away".
After that, the album starts rocking out. Funny how it's a gradual build. "Powderfinger" shows what's straight ahead- hard rock dominated by none other than guitars. "Welfare Mothers" is catchy and "Sedan Delivery" is an acquired taste, but numerous plays reveals a highly enjoyable song. It's strangely written, which might turn people off at first. "Hey Hey My My (Into the Black)" is like the first song but with heavy guitars thrown in, painting a darker image.
Neil at his best? Maybe.

The hackles on my neck immediately began to raise and my face got three shades redder, "Only Neil Young? I will have you know that this particular CD is a classic."
"Classic garbage..."
I grabbed the CD out of her hand and ripped out the Best of Abba (my wife's idea of classic music) out of the boom box and put this baby in. She sat there patiently listening to all the songs and after it was over all she could say was, "He's quite a whiner, isn't he?"
I took the CD out of the player and went inside and like a sulky teenager went in my room and put it in my CD player in the bedroom and put my headphones on and put on Hey Hey, My My on repeat and just let the King of the Fuzz guitar take me to deeper and deeper levels. Neil Young was crunching cords and distorting notes long before Nirvanna, Pearl Jam, or any other "grunge" group came on the scene. Neil Young needs his backup band Crazy Horse just like Crazy Horse needs him.
After the 12th listen my wife gently knocked on the bedroom door. "I want to apologize to you, John. I really didn't think you liked Neil Young that much. As a truce I made you a banana split."
I accepted the apology, the banana split and I got to keep my CD, but the next day I went looking for my Blue Oyster Cult CDs only to find out that they got tossed along with my favorite Hawaiin shirt...
