The pre-Hotel California years were arguably the best for The Eagles (though there were, thanks to Joe Walsh, some stellar future moments). Their mix of country, folk, and rock had a harder, grittier edge, and helped define what would become known as the Southern California sound. There was just enough of a country feel in the beautiful harmonies of "Best of My Love," to blur the edges between the genres. "Take It Easy" and "Lyin' Eyes" could easily have come out of the new Nashville school, as well. The twang that characterizes the guitar intro to "Already Gone" and the leads in "Witchy Woman" and "One of These Nights," also pays tribute to country's guitar greats. Greatest Hits 1971-1975 houses a scant ten singles, but not only does it illustrate the magic of the collaboration between Glen Frey and Don Henley, it shows the breadth of The Eagles impact on the many who would follow their lead. --Steve Gdula

Fly with the Eagles.......2007-06-10
Great collection that you will enjoy. Its got some essential Eagle hits that really are gems. A fine collection of music from a fine collection of musicians.
Flyin' High - 4 Ever.......2007-03-09
This record ranks as the #1 best selling album in the American Music Industry, so I guess that speaks for iteslf. 41 million copies worldwide and still selling, probably indicates just how their music appeals to all young and old...
If you want an introduction to the Eagles buy this and also "Hotel California" and you'll be set.
Take It Easy is as fresh now as it was in 1973 (and still stands as the best ever Eagles song recorded - that opening "G" chord still sends shivers down one's spine!) Contains all the great stuff pre-Hotel California.
However, if you want a far more comprehensive collection of Eagles songs - buy the double CD "Complete Greatest Hits".
The title says it all!.......2006-12-18
This album can afford to be out of print now that there's the surpassing THE VERY BEST OF THE EAGLES. Here are ten chart-risers that were previously released respectively on the band's first four non-compilation releases,THE EAGLES,DESPERADO,ON THE BORDER and ONE OF THESE NIGHTS.
A smooth shot of tequila.......2006-12-06
This album stops a bit early in the Eagles' career, just before the release of "Hotel California," and that's to its advantage because there isn't a dud on the album. After this, it was hit or miss for them. The standouts here are "One of These Nights," "Best of My Love," and the underrated, overlooked, and totally awesome "Tequila Sunrise." Great music for singing along in the car (especially the doo-doo-doos at the end of "Peaceful Easy Feeling").
A 70's classic, but now obsolete.......2006-11-03
This was a must have album in the 1970's, but it has since been superceded by their "The Very Best of" 2 CD set. This CD is simply a song for song re-issue of the vinyl album, so it only contains 10 songs from their early days. Which would be fine if this were a budget release, but it is not. The songs on here are great, but I think you would get a better value from buying "The Very Best of The Eagles" collection. It spans their entire career and includes 33 songs on 2 CDs.
I know they want to keep selling this CD since it is the biggest selling album of all time, but they need to cut the price or at least throw in a few bonus tracks.

Dylan was virtually gushing great songs when this masterpiece arrived in the summer of 1965. From the epochal opening of "Like a Rolling Stone" through the absurdly apocalyptic closer, "Desolation Row," his command of surrealistic language was daring and amazing. As a vocalist, he was rewriting the rules of the game. Jimi Hendrix made note of Mr. Z's technically suspect pitch and decided that he too was a singer. And the backing, though ragged, is precisely right. Is this the essential Dylan album? It's certainly one of them. --Steven Stolder

Blistering Images in Rhyme.......2006-08-27
This is Bob Dylan at his very finest and this is probably his best record, from "Like a Rolling Stone" to the album's closer, "Desolation Row," the listener is assaulted with blistering images in rhyme that she will never forget. Dylan changed the shape of the musical landscape with this record, changed rock and roll forever. His songs broke the three minute mold, they weren't about love and love lost anymore. In fact some of them are darned hard to understand, but they stay with you none the less. Bob Dylan was, and is, the poet laureate of Rock and Roll, the poet laureate of America. Love after we're all gone, his lyrics will be sung, recited, read.
The Sun's not yellow, it's chicken!.......2006-05-21
This album has everything!
Best story song: "Like a Rolling Stone"
Most rockin' song: "Tombstone Blues"
Most bluesy song: "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry"
Most poppy song: "From a Buick 6"
Most haunting song: "Ballad of a Thin Man"
Most druggy song: "Queen Jane Approximately"
Funniest song: "Highway 61 Revisited"
Most witty song: "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues"
Best lyrics: "Desolation Row"
See, there. It's the best album ever!
I Love this Record.......2006-04-02
"Like a Rolling Stone" the first song on HIGHWAY 61 grabs you right from the getgo and this album does not let go till the last guitar lick in "Desolation Row" and in between there are some of the best rock and roll you are ever going to listen too. It seems like the band has been playing together forever, though from what I've read of how Bob Dylan makes records, they probably just got together, did a few run throughs, then bang, they probably cut the record. Well, they did great, this record not only stands the test of time, it will never get old.
Gone are the Protest Songs on this Rockin' Rocker.......2006-04-02
It must have been hard for the Dylan faithful to make the switch from folk to rock. He didn't make it as easy as Steve Jobs apparently has done with the switch to the new Intel processor in his new Macs. However he set the world on fire with "Like a Rolling Stone." Al Kooper's keyboards are nothing short of haunting. I've heard Dylan do this song on countless live tapes and in person a few times, but never have I heard him approach the power he does on this record with this song. "Like a Rolling Stone" is followed by "Tombstone Blues" more shear rock and roll music and this time it's piled on top of beautiful poetry. Next up comes my favorite song on the record, "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry" more raw power. And the record goes on in that vein, ending with the long and very wonderful "Desolation Row." Just wonderful. Wait, I already said that. Well now I'm saying it again.
The Whole Album is a Rocker Extrodinaire.......2006-04-02
I just love the lead guitar work on "Desolation Row." That lead guitar punches up Dylan's voice and those surreal lyrics to make this song like no other. I shudder for the whole eleven minutes every time my husband plays this song and he plays it a lot. You can never get tired of this. Mr. Dylan really raised the bar with this one. "Like a Rolling Stone" is a rocker extrodinaire and it goes on for six minutes, which was a big deal when it came out, because most hit records never when over something like three minutes, ten seconds. Dylan really broke the mold with "Stone", opened up the scene for others to record long songs. This is a super CD. One you just have to own.

This CD is really some smokin' playing by Jimmy. It's highly recommended. The big band backup of Oliver Nelson, with whom Jimmy collaborated on for a good number of recordings really adds to the BASHIN'. It's real powerful stuff all the way through.

At least half of the songs on Van Halen's eponymous 1978 debut are still considered classics, and the Eddie Van Halen instrumental "Eruption" revolutionized the guitar community by introducing a technique called finger-tapping into the heavy metal lexicon. A magnificent debut for sure, but maybe the band should have held onto a few of their blockbuster tunes to bolster the lean years that started after 1984, and continue to the present day. Regardless, Van Halen amply demonstrate their drive, showmanship, and musicianship throughout, blowing the needle off the scale on such tracks as "You Really Got Me," "Jamie's Cryin'," "Runnin' with the Devil," and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love." --Jon Wiederhorn
Customer Reviews:
(4.5 stars) ROCK ON!!!.......2007-07-27
Interesting story behind how I came about this album, and this band. A friend of my brother's was trying to argue that Eddie Van Halen was a better guitarist than Jimi Hendrix. I heard about it, and I'm thinking, What? Is this kid serious? No guitarist is better than Hendrix, and you know it! Well, I still don't think Eddie Van Halen is a better guitarist than Jimi Hendrix, but this album rocks like hell. I mean, a couple of these songs are awful, like "Janie's Cryin'" and "I'm the One", but that does not keep the best material from rocking tremendously. "Atomic Punk"? Oh, hell yeah. Hilarious little satire-thingy. "Runnin' with the Devil"? You've heard that song, right? It owns. It's got a great refrain, and a great riff, and that motorcycle guitar intro-thing... cool! "You Really Got Me Now" actually manages to almost out-Kinks the Kinks' original, except for the annoying sex noises in the end that were stolen right from "Whole Lotta Love". Other than that, it rocks. Let's see... "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" has the best riff on the record, "Feel Your Love Tonight" has the best solo (never said Eddie wasn't a good guitarist, just not as good as Jimi Hendrix. There's a difference, see?).I even enjoy a couple of the lesser-known songs, like "Little Dreamer", where Diamond Dave (I want a nickname like that) has all kinds of fun on vocals, and the hard-rockin' blues shuffle "Ice Cream Man". Even the infamous guitar solo "Eruption" is decent imitation Hendrix. A lot of detractors like to say that Van Halen is a hair-metal band, but I don't buy it: it never seems like they put style ahead of substance (much like AC/DC), and even Roth's macho-man I'm-so-sexy, do-me-right-now thing seems to be ironic (another AC/DC comparison). So if you want to rock out without thinking hard at all, buy this right away.
What can you say?.......it was VH's first.......2007-07-19
Van Halen.....with David Lee Roth, what can you say? This is there first album and it is great! I bought it on cassette and cd. One of the all time great bands. Highly recommended.
Sonic Perfection.......2007-07-09
While many could argue that this isn't Van Halen's best album, it's definitely in the top three. "Van Halen" was a landmark album for its time and still is today. It introduced the world to the guitar wizardry of Eddie Van Halen and unleashed David Lee Roth onto the music scene. One need look no further than "Eruption" to understand what makes this album so amazing. Eddie Van Halen becomes one with the guitar as he pulls off this wonderful sampling of sonic salvos, firing up the listener as the get ready to hear Van Halen's cover of "You Really Got Me." Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about the first cut on this album, the wonderful "Runnin' With The Devil." It, along with "You Really Got Me," "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" and "Jamie's Cryin'" are all staples of any true Classic Rock radio staion today. "Ice Cream Man" serves as a harbinger to David Lee Roth's experimentation with dirty Blues tunes later on. The entire album is amazing. Is it their best? Maybe, maybe not. I'll let you decide.
Highly recommended to fans of electric guitar work, hard rock, and anybody interested in knowing why the guitar solo flourished throughout the 80's.
A solid debut that has aged about as gracefully as...well, the band.......2007-07-06
No sane person can look you in the eye and say that they truly admire and respect Van Halen. But the talent is certainly there, no more so than "guitar god" Eddie Van Halen, who while not as legendary as the Hendrixes and Becks and Pages, certainly deserves credit (and a bit of scorn) for his influential guitar prowess that inevitably led to a swamp of garbage in the next decade (though to be fair, the music on 1984 is probably even more guilty of that crime).
The hits here are all at least listenable (and "Runnin' With the Devil" is still their best song), and even the energetic cover of "You Really Got Me" is pretty good even while the candle falls far short of the Kinks' original.
Time has not been kind to this record, though (at the time of its release, I bet it was actually fresh and often amazing), but there's enough stuff that holds up well enough on here to give it a solid recommendation. Roth's goofy effect was already evident: the "shooby-doo-wah" break in "I'm the One" and the cover of "Ice Cream Man" proves two things: they have a sense of humor and they can find themselves on the wrong side of the thin line between clever and stupid. And shouldn't Eddie have revealed his finger-tapping method on a song that's not such a throwaway as "Eruption?"
Best cuts: "Runnin' With the Devil," "Jamie's Cryin'," "On Fire," "You Really Got Me," "Atomic Punk," "Ain't Talkin' `Bout Love," "Feel Your Love Tonight"
a Very Good Debut Album.......2007-07-02
Van Halen back in the day was the truth. now I see alot of Bands being Proclaimed as the Best Rock and Roll Band in the world,etc... but there was a time when saying that title and Van halen in the same sentence truly was the truth. tracks like Running with the Devil, Eruption, you really got me going was the Jam. Eddie Van Halen changed the game on Guitar. he was something else back in the day,Michael Anthony on Bass was something else as well, Alex Van Halen on Drums was bringing it and One of the coolest Lead singers Ever Diamond David Lee Roth nailed down the vocals and was on point. this is a Debut album that still holds up some almost 30 years later. strong solos, Grooves and Arrangements. you felt a Band that was on a Mission and from start to finish it's a very Good Collection. Van Halen brought in there own Bag of Rock and Roll.

Remarkably, this is the third studio album Creedence Clearwater Revival released in 1969! During that stunning burst, John Fogerty could do no wrong. Green River isn't as chock-full of CCR standards as the record that followed it in 1970 (Cosmo's Factory), and, at 30 minutes, it's briefer than its rather brief predecessor (Willy and the Poorboys). Still, this is economy at its best. The title track, "Lodi," and "Bad Moon Rising" are all indelibly etched into the memory banks of classic-rock fans, while "Commotion" and "Cross-Tie Walker" are perfect swamp-rock complements. "The Night Time Is the Right Time" is one more in a series of spot-on Fogerty covers. And "Wrote a Song for Everyone" manages to be both rarefied and down to earth in the same breath--which is really CCR in a nutshell. --Steven Stolder

I ordered the CD as a Christmas gift for my dad. It took longer then expected to get here but overall it was a good experience. He liked the CD. It was in good shape and he was happy with it.
When Fogerty's angry, I'm happy - he makes better music that way........2006-11-04
Let's face it, John Fogerty was NOT in a good mood when CCR recorded Green River. No matter what the idyllic title track may lead to believe, this is an enraged, paranoid, defeated record. Not only that, it's an excellent engraged, paranoid, defeated record, loaded with some of the group's best hits. I'd go with the best song being the natural-disaster warning Bad Moon Rising (which, contrary to popular belief, had NOTHING to do with bathrooms on the right). Not to discount the other songs, though. The title track is a favorite of mine, and as I said one of the few songs this disc that's not angry. Even then, it's melancholy. Same with Lodi, a song about a musician payin' dues. Commotion is another warning song, and it's also first-rate. Plus we get a couple of the group's best album tracks: Tombstone Shadow and especially Wrote a Song for Everyone, the latter being my second-favorite on the disc. The album does fall apart on a couple tracks, though: Cross-Tie Walker is at the level of some of Bayou Country's fillers; Night Time is the Right Time throws off the mood and showcases awful faux doo-wap backing vocals that must be heard to be believed. But whatever - this is still CCR's best.
Creedence Hit the Big Time .......2006-08-30
When I first heard this album in 1969. it was on vinyl. A friend had just purchased it and had just unwrapped the plastic that was on it. He placed it on the turntable and within three notes of the first track (Green River) the place was rocking.
This album was a keeper then and still is today.

His third album, and arguably his finest, Late for the Sky continues Browne's sincere self-analysis into positively grim territory. The title track concerns the lingering effects of a dead relationship and was featured in Martin Scorcese's film Taxi Driver. While "For a Dancer" confronts death head-on, "Farther On" explains the difficulties faced by us dorks who live life through books, films, or music; and "Before the Deluge" forecasts environmental gloom and doom. Guitarist David Lindley adds terrific counterpoint to Browne's musing, supporting the tracks with tasteful slide and fiddle work. --Rob O'Connor

Life Saver.......2007-07-28
This CD saved my life!! Jack at his best! If I had a penny for everytime I played it.........
Masterpiece of a joyous, sorrowful prophet for a generation.......2007-07-25
One would feel driven to write regarding this extraordinary album regardless the acclamation of many others, and for only one or two of its fine qualities, even if all its other fine qualities were missing, which they are not. From the first gorgeous David Lindley riff of the title tune--remember that headstock carved like an eagle's head?-- to the final fiddle arpeggios of "After the Deluge", this album help me rapt in 1974, and it still does, as few albums do. If you are going through a painful breakup, and your woman has fled to Colorado with her too-cool lover, this is also the album for you. "How long have I been sleeping, how long have I been drifting alone through the night, ...dreaming I could make it right...to be the one you'll need?" There are few times a composer has used such a rhetorical question to such effect, and one quickly sees that Browne is absolutely perfect in his word choices, in his tones, in all his arsenal of talent, throughout this album. Wise enough, fun enough in its rockers, "Walking Slow", and "The Road and the Sky", absolutely heartbreaking in its sense of loss, lovers, youth, illusions, and its absolute refusal to stop dreaming nonetheless, this may have been one of the finest albums of a long decade, full of revelations, excess, and genius. On a less elevated plane, Browne's voice, his piano work, along with (I believe) Tai Winding, and the stellar slide/picking technique of David Lindley, all combine to produce a very rounded, mature, practiced sound, like that of a comeback band of veterans. Yet these guys were all this good the first time round. Buy this, and I guarantee you, you will not be disappointed for one single beat. The album cover, with its reference both to lines of a song, and Rene Magritte, deserves much study after a helping or two of some sort of cerebral stimulant of your choice.
Close to the end........2007-07-05
When I was a kid, I didn't know much about celebrity's personal lives and never realized that this music was the result of the loss of Mr. Browne's wife. Re-visiting it all these years later is just as good as it sounded then. I only wish I still had the vinyl and the original alblum cover full size.
REMASTER ????.......2007-04-11
Fantastic work again from Jackson! My main purpose for entering this "review" is to plead with the label for a REMASTERED version....
my favorite jackson browne album........2007-03-24
mr browne has many fine recordings out there, but none of them match this masterpiece. this is contemplative singer/songwriter stuff of the highest order. "for a dancer," is an all-time classic; a haunting meditation on death that is about as moving as soft rock gets. his vocals here are aching and gorgeous in their delivery, with that trademark phrasing that is so singularly his own. david lindley's guitar work adds a stunning beauty to the whole thing, as well. a wonderful album. one of the true highlights of the early 70's.

Though he lacked the improvisational fire of John Coltrane and the restless curiosity of Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins played with a rich, round tone that complimented his melodic inclinations, making him the most accessible of the post-bop musicians. Saxophone Colossus is the most successful of the late '50s albums that made his reputation. Rollins' playing never falters; he's backed by the redoubtable Max Roach on drums, Tommy Flannagan on piano, and Doug Watkins on bass. Rollins is equally at home with the lilting Caribbean air of "St. Thomas," standards ("You Don't Know What Love Is"), blues ("Strode Rode," featuring a driving Tommy Flannagan solo), and a smoldering version of Brecht-Weill's "Moritat" (better known as "Mac the Knife"). If you are new to jazz, there is no better place to start than Saxophone Colossus. --Steven Mirkin

Rollins the master.......2007-05-31
This is one of the best ever Jazz albums, recorded by one of the top five tenor players in Jazz history.
The other musicians are:
Tommy Flanagan - Piano
Doug Watkins - Bass
Max Roach - drums
Even if you're not a Jazz fan you'll know Sonny Rollins 'St Thomas' which opens the album, with its calypso melody its one of the best known Jazz tunes. The performances are uniformly excellent and the sound is incredible since this album was recorded 50 years ago.
The track 'Moritat' is in fact 'The theme from the three penny opera', but it sounds remarkably similar to 'Mack the Knife'. Whatever the tune really is, Rollins is never less throughly inventive, as anyone who has seen him live will testify to. This track perhaps contains the highlight of the album, where Sonny Rollins trades 4's with Max Roach.
This is one of the classic Jazz albums and should be in everyones collection.
What More to Say?.......2007-04-19
Look at the reviews of this CD...a heavy-metal fan turned onto jazz (at least in part) by this album. Someone realizing that rating this CD is like rating the Mona Lisa. - And with >70 reviews this CD still has a perfect 5 stars. - Yes, the music really is that good. The rendition of "Moritat" is by itself enough to justify buying the CD. I am adding my two cents here only to help keep the reviews recent and to let potential buyers know that this music is [still] amazing and it really is worth your hard-earned money.
One of the greatest pieces of recorded music ever.......2007-04-06
This is a milestone album, not just in jazz, but in the history of recorded music. I will never forget walking into a record store as a child and hearing this music for the first time. Sonny Rollins had the genius to create music on an new level; one that took the elements of BEBOP and created a deeper melodic and rhythmic foundation. And the recording of this album pointed to the music of the Beatles and beyond. This is jazz at its greatest and most alluring level. This album rocks, it rolls and it grooves in a way that no other "recording: had done before, and that few have done since. If you want to learn what the hightest art can achieve, you can listen to this for an entire life time. Sonny, you are the greatest. And you will always be remembered for this masterpiece.
all jazzed up!.......2007-02-21
This cd of Sonny Rollins is the second jazz cd I have ever purchased. I bought it along with Louis Armstrong, The Definitive Collection.
As I stated in my review of Louis' cd, I am a hard core rock 'n roll/heavy metal girl and have never intentionally listened to jazz before...but I think I'm hooked now! I listened to samples of a LOT of albums before I made this purchase, and Sonny's music reeled me in like no other, with the exception of Louis.
After listening to this cd, I am going to look for more of Sonny's albums to buy. I'm sure his music can turn anyone into a jazz fan...it did me, and that's quite an amazing feat!
Saxophone Colossus!.......2007-02-20
Giving this album a rating is like trying to rate the Mona Lisa. It's an unmistakable masterpiece. Listen to it and I challenge you to not be swept up in the envelope of that sound. Reflective melancholy, exuberant joy, each melody a story told with an attitude...or a sense of humour. It's all here. Rollins sings through his horn while the rhythm section lays it down and you are enraptured.
Whenever someone I know says they can't get into jazz, this is the album I play to open their ears. Whenever I'm down in the dumps, this is the album I listen to to lift my spirits.
Saxophone Collossus is one of the greatest albums of any genre. I've been listening to it for the better part of twenty-five years. It's part of my nervous system. I wouldn't want to be without it.

Lyric and thoughtful, pianist Bill Evans proved an urbane bridge between the early bop style of Bud Powell and playful funk of Horace Silver, and the later, modern approach of pianists like Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett (indeed, Jarrett went as far as to record with Evans's backup band of drummer Paul Motian and bassist Gary Peacock). Evans's second album as a leader, Portrait in Jazz combines a pair of originals--"Blue in Green" and "Peri's Scope"--with a handful of show tunes and standards, including a version of "Someday My Prince Will Come" that pre-dates Miles Davis's adaptation. With a preference for irregular phrasing and a taste for unusual chord spellings, Evans was frequently able to recast old chestnuts and tired warhorses into new gems and spirited charges, as he does here with "Witchcraft," "Spring Is Here," and "When I Fall in Love." And although he recorded in many different formats throughout his career, including duets with himself, the power and beauty of Evans's trios helped him lay a special claim to that grouping. --Fred Goodman

Wow!.......2007-04-16
This is my seventh Evans recording and it is like I am getting to know him all over again. This album has energy, freshness and joy that just isn't there on later recordings. The recording quality is more than satisfactory. The group's playing is smart and engaging with a skillful balance between technical skill and understated musicality. The playfulness brought to standards like Witchcraft is a welcome contrast to many of his later more brooding works. LaFaro and Motian provide their legendary support and interplay with their typcial flair. This was definitely a high point for Evans, before drugs, bad health and personal problems got in the way. No Evans collection would be complete without this recording.
Expressive playing!.......2007-03-09
The artistic greatness of Bill Evans resides in his spelling treatment of the piano. He not only plays the keyboard; he plays with the instrument and certainly he would seem to establish with it a sort of spiritual connection making of it an extension this inner thoughts and moods.
That's why there have been so many versions about his compositions and however, just a few have been able to perform and express with such kind of feeling and inspiration the core of his compositions.
This is at least to my view, the main reason I recognize in him the essence of the genius. As Midas King all what he played it was pure gold.
another evans album you should have........2007-02-10
bill evans is perhaps the most satisfying piano player to get into my ears. the lyrical beauty of his playing is magical for late nights spent reading and listening to music. "the village vanguard recordings" are my favorite bill evans, but this comes up a close second. buy with confidence if you love music steeped in beauty.
a revelation.......2006-08-15
I thought I knew Evans' music pretty well, but this disc (which I, too, sought out after hearing Paul Motian recommend it in his "Fresh Air" interview) came as something of a revelation.
Rarely have I heard Evans play with so much energy. Some of his lines here even call to mind Bud Powell, who is not someone I would ordinarily associate with Evans. His whole approach on this disc - attack, development of ideas, use of dissonance - is more aggressive than on most of his other recordings.
This energy, though, doesn't come at the expense of lyricism. This CD has more than its share of heartbreakingly beautiful moments. Is there any ballad more affecting than (in Evans' hands) "When I Fall In Love"?
Paul Motian's fave with Bill Evans.......2006-03-14
On NPR's Fresh Air, Motian said this was his favorite recording that he made with Bill Evans. Pretty good recommendation!

After being critically lambasted by the jazz cognoscenti of the mid-1960s for his pop-jazz recordings, composer and arranger Gary McFarland silenced the naysayers with his impressive orchestral masterpiece, America the Beautiful: An Account of Its Disappearance. A concept album that used the pro-environmental essays of Marya Mannes as its launching point, America the Beautiful successfully brought Gary McFarland's output from the early '60s full circle. A mixture of jazz and rock, America mixes McFarland's earlier orchestral style with his growing fascination with the pop-song form to create a devastating tone poem on the state of America in 1968. Breathtaking in its scope and beauty, this sadly would be McFarland's last major orchestral work. He continued to steer more and more toward popular music, and then died tragically in 1971. One of the recurring themes throughout this piece is the haunting melody that would later be renamed "Gary's Theme" and recorded as a memorial by such jazz greats as Cal Tjader and Bill Evans. --Kristian St. Clair

Don't let that classical-guitar-ish opening to "Fight Fire with Fire" fool you--Ride the Lightning packs a heavy-metal wallop. While not as ambitious as the subsequent Master of Puppets, this early Metallica album is indubitably one of their best. Thematically, it explores death and dying from myriad points of view: nuclear war ("Fight Fire with Fire"), execution by electric chair (the title track), and drowning ("Trapped Under Ice"). Interestingly, the album's best track is "Fade to Black," a slower, introspective song about suicide. There's also "Creeping Death," which remains a concert favorite. An excellent mix of rapid-fire guitar riffs, rip-roaring solos, and singer James Hetfield's trademark growl, this is thrash metal at its finest. -- Genevieve Williams

Wall To Wall Sound.......2001-02-03
Okay, we all know the history behind the 1984 classic. For those who are questioning the fact that you should buy the DCC Remastered 24 Karat Gold Disc? I will be more then glad to give some reasons why.....
Reason 1) It's sounds way better then the 1995 Elektra CD. Reason 2) You can actually hear Lars' drum snare a little more clearer, and the same goes for double bass drum. Reason 3) For all us old fans who owned the original vinyl, you finally get the original artwork, check out the sleeve inside the jewel case, you'll say to yourself "that's so old-school". Reason 4) You can actually hear the guitars and bass guitar even out. Reason 5) Listen to your favorite track then compare it to the Elektra version and hear the sound quality at work. Reason 6) If your like me, and were starting to give up on Metallica, hearing this and the DDC version of "Master Of Puppets" will keep make these 2 albums timeless and alive in your collection forever.
This is not a re-issue, this has not been remixed (like what Ozzy did on his second set of Remasters), this is just simply a perfect digitally remastering job that most record company can't comprehend just yet.
Best that Metallica can offer!!.......2000-09-30
This is the best Metallica CD out in the market. It has the best song, "For Whom the Bell Tolls". Also one of the most intense songs, "Fight Fire with Fire". I recommend this CD very much.
Perfect Metal.......2000-08-22
First, I must say that "Ride the Lightning" is one of the best heavy metal albums ever released. The songs are incredible, the song writing is untouchable, and the lead guitar work is masterful.
The standard issue Elektra Records version of Ride the Lightning WAS remastered by Elektra technicians back in 1995. However, after being remastered, the album seemed a lot less heavy and there seemed to be a "jagginess" so to speak in the overall sound. But this isn't really noticable until you hear the near-perfect remaster by DCC.
The difference between this and the standard issue CD is the overall sound of the music. The music now sounds like it was recorded especially for CD (which cannot be said for the Elektra version). The sound seems more polished and eliminates most of the "jagginess" in the sound, and the dynamics are accentuated perfectly. For example, the intro solo in Fade To Black now really blends together and sounds like it should - Kirk's guitar work dynamically interlacing with the acoustic guitar (in the standard CD, the intro solo seemed detached somewhat). These things may not mean much to most people, but to me it makes listening to the album more enjoyable. Highly recommended if you have the money.
