Got an LP not a CD.......2007-07-30

Amazon, create a way to say an item is an LP not a CD, I thought it was a CD when I bought it and got the LP instead. So I do not recommend it just based on that, sure wish I could listen to it.

Back Home Again - John Denver.......2007-03-29

I remember having this LP Album in the 70's and was very happy to have it on CD with some of my very favorite John Denver songs - especially the song "Matthew", which I haven't been able to find on other John Denver CD's. This music brings back lots of good memories.

I'd be still happy with my vinyl copy still if it weren't so scratchy in places. The remastering sounds fresh as the day it was recorded so I'm happy with the cd. It captures a wonderful period in John's career. If you're in any doubt about this one allay your fears as it's John at his country mode best. Although having said that you can't beat John's live work. That's where he really shined! You're still the greatest John!

Great Memories!.......2007-02-25

My mom had this album on vinyl. She later bought it on cassette and she played it in the car all the time. Later I bought my own copy on tape. I wore that out during college and later bought the CD.

Every song on this album is a classic and if you are looking for an album to play while driving along on a rainy day you can stop looking right now.

You can feel the emotion poured into ever lyric. Every song is as sincere as you can get.

I love this album and I'll never be without a copy!

I love this album. My mom and I used to listen to it on 8-track in the late 70's and it's exactly like I remembered it. The best thing...the lyrics! I've been trying to figure out what was in Grandma's Feather Bed for 20 years.

The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Though easily as popular as Bing Crosby, Gene Autry was not as versatile and perhaps not as talented as his fellow multimedia star. But to his credit, Autry was better able to capture the imagination of a young, ever-expanding American consciousness with songs that helped create the myth of a West where "you sleep out every night and the only law is right." The songs on this collection span from 1929 (with a wonderful yodeling blues called "Blue Yodel No. 5") to his signature tunes "Back in the Saddle Again" and "You Are My Sunshine," recorded in the early 1940s. What's remarkable about this collection (arranged roughly in chronological order) is how closely many of the early songs are tied to African-American blues. As the collection progresses into the mid-30s, the elements we've come to recognize as "Western" begin to emerge in the music. Through it all, Autry's performances are sturdy and plainspoken, unfolding with an unexpected ease and grace. It is Gene at his all time best. If you are either an old or new fan of him I highly recommend it for your collection. Again my cassettes do not even start to compare in goodness to this CD in showing his great musical talents both vocal and instrumental. A must have.

Must have CD for Country Western fans........2006-02-14

This is one of my favorite country western CDs. Ol' Gene gave us his best in numbers ranging from Mexicali Rose to Blue Hawaii to Blueberry Hill.

I just can't get enough of the simple somewhat melancholic style. Also these are transfers from analog recordings and the slight degradation in sound quality adds to the "long ago" feeling.

The simple, yet memorable arrangements will melt a heart of stone. I remember listening to some of these numbers on the Voice Of America program. The VOA programs used to open with some songs as a prelude to interviews and the like.

What a treat. Makes one pine for the wide open spaces.

Gene recorded much of his best in between the 1930's and 1940's and this compilation of 25 Gene Autry classics on ASV runs the gamut of musical styles he has covered ranging from western (Back In The Saddle Again, Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Dust, South of The Border, etc.), pop (Blue Hawaii, Mexicali Rose, Blueberry Hill, etc.), blues (Any Old Time, his cover of Jimmie Rodgers's Blue Yodel #5, etc.), country (You Are My Sunshine, Have I Told You Lately That I Love You, etc.) and other styles and were recorded from 1929-1945. While Bing Crosby covered Gene's "Goodbye Little Darlin' Goodbye" ..., the sound quality for the most part is generally excellent while some songs such as "Mexicali Rose" and "Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" do sound rough compared to CD's using Sony's original sources but it does sound acceptable for the 78 plus the surface noise adds authenticity and nostalgia for the people who grew up in the era these songs were recorded. This is the perfect introduction to the talent of Gene Autry, plus ASV has a companion disc to this collection called "The Last Roundup" if you want more to add to this collection with no overlap. Absolutely essential to any collection of country, western, and early pop music and after all you can't go wrong with ASV's product after all.

Wow, your neighbor will love you when you crank this at 60db! Not! Hey, give the Holy Spirit a little juice, this band is about as hard as they come! Not for the faint of heart but for the ears of steel. The msg is more suttle, but it's there. If your in the "King James Only" croud, you may want to pass on this one.

Heavy, intense, and extremely beautiful.......2005-09-03

Disciple breaks the stereotypes that heavy rock cannot be beautiful. Any fan of hard rock and/or metal will love this CD because of the awesome music and exceptional lyrics.

Every song by Disciple is based on Biblical scripture and can be applied to life so very well. They talk about topics such as waiting for Christ to return, we have nothing to fear in Christ, keeping up our Christian integrity, and so so much more. There is also a lot of praise and worship on this album that is still accompanied by heavy guitar riffs and passionate words. There is even a beautiful, slower song at the end of the album entitled "One More Time" that is an awesome praise and worship song.

From a musical standpoint, this CD is incredible as well. There are very catchy drums and bass, incredible heavy riffs and beautiful scales present throughout. Even more, the lead singer's incredible vocals (fairly evenly mixing singing and screaming) blend perfectly with the music. And as many of you may have experienced, some modern heavy rock/metal have music and vocals that sound like the hair bands of the 80s, but this stuff definitely does not. The music couldn't get be heavier (or better, in my opinion), and the singing couldn't be any more modern or a better fit for the genre.

This CD will definitely inspires the listener to live a life for Christ and they will surely enjoy every bit of the musical and lyrical masterpiece along the way! If you like heavy stuff, check it out - I'm absolutely sure you'll love it!

Man..i love this band so much. Back again is one of those albums that u must have. In every song your spirit is being fed. Every song is out of the bible..they even give little scripturs next to each verse.

The singer sceams alot...and thats why i love it..i also love it cuz it ministers to anyone who listens. and the songs make you wanna headbang.

I have never ben to a disciple concert where someone has not gotten saved..the band is true about there faith in God. And feels if they dont get ppl to Jesus through there music then there not doing there job. I love this band and i love there heart.

Some artists are born to be stars; others are just born to be good. Back Home Again is Rhonda Vincent's return to pure bluegrass after a decade spent trying unsuccessfully to balance genuine artistry with the commercial requirements of contemporary country. Vincent grew up in Missouri singing and playing mandolin with her family band, the Sally Mountain Show. Her father, Johnny Vincent, shares the lead vocal on Ira Louvin's "Out of Hand" and brother Darrin Vincent (of Ricky Skaggs's Kentucky Thunder) plays bass and sings harmony. The album's centerpiece is a hard-driving cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" that brings out the song's implicit bluegrass flavor. Another Great Rhonda Vincent Album.......2007-03-06

Here is yet another fantastic album put out by the finest/ clearest voice in bluegrass today. This album is an assortment of old bluegrass standards and some truly "original" Rhonda Vincent numbers. Included are Louvin Bros. "You're Running Wild", and Ira Louvin penned "Out of Hand". There's also the great Jimmy Martin number "Pretending I dont Care". But, personally, I find the finest to be the last song on the CD, "Where No Cabins Fall"....Rhonda's vocals on this one are the finest of anything I've heard her sing. There's also a fair set of liner notes, detailing each song and providing a background for the Album itself. This one will remain in your rotation for a long time.

Very good bluegrass cd.......2007-01-17

This is not Rhonda's best work but I still give it a full four stars. In the cd's following this one, Rhonda adds better and better musicians, arrangements, and song selections in her recordings. Her harmonies with her brother Darrin are great. Jerry Douglas plays dobro on "When I Close My Eyes" and " You Don't Know How Lucky You Are". His playing adds so much to the songs. The remake of Dolly's "Jolene" was one of the best I've heard. Not many can follow Dolly. It was very sweet to hear Rhonda's dad sing with her and her brother on "Out Of Hand". The remake of the Osbourne brothers "You're Running Wild" was one of the best songs on this cd. I've heard Rhonda and her band play "Lonesome Wind Blues" live and it sounds just like the recording. There's no studio tricks here.

Brilliant bluegrass album.......2004-10-09

Rhonda was raised on bluegrass music and began her recording career as a bluegrass singer before trying to break into mainstream country. Although the albums (Written in the stars, Trouble free) were of a high quality, Rhonda didn't make the breakthrough she was hoping for and returned to her beloved bluegrass music with this album. The only instruments on this album are bass, guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle and dobro. Apart from being a wonderful singer, Rhonda is an accomplished musician and plays most of the mandolin parts on this album. In this album, Rhonda explains how each song was selected. It seems that Rhonda had been familiar with most of the songs for many years before finally getting round to recording them.

The album is generally upbeat. Even the songs with sad lyrics, such as the opening Lonesome wind blues (which Rhonda learned from a Buck White album), are performed in a bright, upbeat style - hard-driving bluegrass at its best. Pretending I don't care (a cover of a Jimmy Martin song) is another example of an upbeat performance downplaying sad lyrics. While many of the songs are up-tempo, Rhonda can sing ballads too, as she demonstrates on When I close my eyes.

Rhonda is a huge fan of Alison Krauss and Dolly Parton and they are equally huge fans of Rhonda. On this album, Rhonda pays tribute to them by covering You're in my heart and Jolene. And if you're thinking you've heard Jolene way too often, Rhonda's version breathes new life into the song, which is ideally suited to bluegrass.

There are so many great songs here. The others I didn't mention are Little angels, Passing of the train, Out of hand, You don't know how lucky you are, Keep your feet on the ground, You're running wild. All of them are brilliant. If you enjoy bluegrass music, you will surely love this music and all of Rhonda's other albums.

The start of something big fulfilled!.......2002-10-19

Rhonda Vincent has been called the Queen of Bluegrass music and this first recording of this timely genre shows why she earned her name. It is simply startling that someone can identify so much with an idiom as Rhonda does on this first return. "Lonesome Wind Blues" will hook you immediately with her high and lonesome voice. "Keep Your Feet On The Ground" is another of those wonderful mid-tempo songs Vincent does so well. She even sings a number with her father on this CD. Glamor photo in the booklet as well as notes by Rhonda on her songs shows her to be an extremely thoughtful and glib personality. This comes with my highest recommendations!

She rocks........2002-09-13

An absolutely outstanding traditionalist bluegrass album! Soulful, restrained picking, great vocals, and a killer song selection! What more could you ask for? After several years trying to make it as a Nashville-r, Vincent has come into the acoustic fold, and the results are quite nice. Most of all, this album nails the feeling of live-wire immediacy that made the best old bluegrass so compelling. Includes an excellent version of Dolly Parton's greatest song ("Jolene"), along with material by Wayne Raney, Jimmy Martin and the Louvin Brothers. Believe me, this is a class act.

Pure inyour face psychobilly, probably one of the best psychobilly albums ever made. Truly a psycho classic. I juss wished the Nekros could still put out an album like this gem. Oh, well, Nekroman rocks no matter how different they sound now. Seen these kats in Detroit a few months back and must say that the singer/ bassist is pure PSYCHO. Just watch him jam the hell out of his coffin standup and u will see , love his voice also, i think at some points sounds like early Dave Mustaine, but possesed and ready to go grave robbing.I think Nekroman is like the next Elvis of Psychobilly. He is just pure psycho as psycho can get even if his music is not as good. He is the real deal.

psychobilly is a great genre of music...no matter how poppy it gets, it usually turns out great, but this is a masterpiece clearly...i mean compared to the other nekro albums..first, its great to hear another guy sharing the vocals with kim nekroman. they compliment each other very well.it is really great that they re-issued this because it was truly hard to find nekromantix albums anywhere, let alone an authentic psychobilly one by them. anyways, this is ten times better than curse of the coffin.

id say get it first...but still dead girls dont cry and return of the loving dead arent bad either.

I can't speak for the professional psychobilly fan - but if you are new to the genre (lke I am) or just like to listen to unusual bands (like I do), this is a CD to have.

Plenty of psychobilly to give you an introduction into that style of music, combined with enough punk attitude to sound fresh even on the n-th replay, the combination of high-speed groove with corny-but-good monster movie-themed lyrics is very hard to resist.

And if everything else fails, you can still play this CD at your next helloween party.

the origanal has been out of print fro quite awhile. it was recently rerelaesed. the intro and organ and bell song weren't on the original release it is almost impossible to find the original.

Let me start by saying that I love the Nekromantix. Since the first note I heard, I was hooked. When I bought this re-issue I was led to believe from Amazon's listing, Hellcat Records website & other various sources that it was an enhanced disc with concert footage circa 1994. So why doesn't my copy have any enhanced content? I love the album (though I'm disappointed that I can't find an original copy) but what happened and why does every online source still list it as an enhanced disc?

Former Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh's first solo album (not counting Seastones, his 1975 electronic collaboration with Ned Lagin) traffics more in Springsteenian arena rock than in the jazzily extended high-wire improvisations of his live shows. While the music lacks the lilt of Lesh's former combo, the band is tight and Dead lyricist Robert Hunter's verses are as evocative, regretful, and optimistic as ever--usually at the same time. Song after song alludes to a golden age of rock hedonism while simultaneously reassuring listeners that the past can be recaptured in the here and now. "Give it up for love, so I've been told," sings deep-throated Lesh in the barrelhouse "Rock-a-Roll Blues," "It seldom gets younger but it never gets old." Guitarist Warren Haynes, who contributes a handful of downbeat power ballads, smears the record with his signature slide playing while fellow guitarist Jimmy Herring bobs and weaves like Bob Weir to Haynes's Jerry Garcia. The first time i listened to this cd I didn't like it. I thought it sounded too much like the Allman Brothers Band. But not until after I listened to it a few times did I realize exactly how unique this band really is. Each member of Lesh & Friends has incredible talents. The best songs are "Midnight Train" "Welcome to the Underground" and "Patchwork Quilt". I recomend this to anyone who is into southern rock, jam bands, or plain ol' feel good music.

First, buy the package with the bonus disc.

Regarding the studio recordings, read the previous reviews. They cover the disc fairly and well. I won't waste time and space repeating what's already been said.

Now let's move on to the real jewel in this package -- the bonus disc.

On this disc, Lesh steps into his familiar role of anti-frontman. Although he does take a few vocal turns on these live performances, Lesh mostly does what he does best, create bass lines that manage to drive and snake through the music all at the same time. Phil Lesh is a monster bass player. He has been for years and he hasn't lost his touch (Phil, if you read this, please follow Jack Cassidy's example. Make an instructional video).

The disc opens with Passenger, a personal favorite of mine. The cut features burning slide guitar, an extremely hot organ solo and rough, but dead on vocals. With each of the following cuts, the disc just gets better and better.

St. Stephen, Dark Star, The Eleven (another personal favorite) are all warhorses from Lesh's days with the Grateful Dead. If you've listened to the Grateful Dead at all, you've at least heard the clasic versions of these songs as they were captured on "Live/Dead." The performances by Phil and his friends pay homage to the "Live/Dead" versions without aping them. The music sparkles throughout. The closing cut, "The Eleven" is a joyful romp. Like the Dead, Phil and friends can truly swing in meters that would tie most bands in knots.

"There and Back Again" is a solid disc that holds up to repeated listenings. It rates close to four stars. However, as I said earlier, it's the bonus disc that's the real jewel here. It hasn't left my car's CD player since the first time I loaded it. The four live recordings included on this disc all rate as five star road music delux!

Once in a while you get shown the light..........2002-06-25

Yes Phil Lesh played bass for the Dead and yes he's been rehashing old tunes live on the music circuit but this CD is mostly original material served on a 70's style platter. It's somewhat of a cross between the Dead and the Allman Brothers with a little bit of Charlie Daniels thrown in for flavor. For an old head like me it's quite refreshing to hear above the blur of Puff Daddy (whatever he calls himself) and Britney Spears. Not that I'm knocking them but well... I guess I am.

When I bought this I listened to it over a couple of beers with a friend who hates the Dead and he asked me, "Who is this?" Believe me this guy is a great friend, however, he is not one to convince of anything he wants nothing to do with. When I told him who it was he replied, "Never would have guessed. I think I kinda like it." And with that I found myself at one of lifes moments where you look back and shake your head.

What my point is: this is not just for Dead heads and the like, but anyone who enjoys good old Rock and Roll.

Phil's Where It's At.......2002-05-27

Some have said Phil Lesh & Friends sound like the Grateful Dead, others have said they sound more like the Allman Brothers. Neither of these statements are really true. Phil is Phil and you can't say anything more. This album is the culmination of a lot of new material written a large part by Phil with many vocals by Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. The album also features tracks written by Warren Haynes alone. Phil's composition skills shine through and must be heard to be believed.

Not live, not dead..........2002-05-26

How do you describe a Phil Lesh & Friends performance?

Enigmatic, narrative, electrifying, intense. The type of concert that will have you dancing in philisophical harmony, the music and lyrics bringing forth solutions to many unanswered questions that have lain dormant in your unconscious mind. Phil Lesh has a jazzmans creativity, a jaguars soul, and a relentless will to give.

You will not, however, find this type of action on "There and Back Again."

But let us look at the album itself, at the songs for what they are, and we will see that this is a finely executed record, with a lot of really good songs on it. I was never a big fan of the Grateful Dead's studio efforts, nor has anybody else ever been, but this is a damn fine album. "Celebration" brings us into the record, a pulsing song that is just bursting with positive energy, this song is everything that it's title implies. Songs of particular beauty are "The Real Thing," and "Patchwork Quilt," both allusions to the lives of artists, and the tragedy and struggle of expression. "Night of 1000 Stars" is definitely the song with the most commercial chance on this record, although I doubt that Phil Lesh will even pursue that road.

I definitely recommend buying the "Limited Edition" version of this album, because it contains REALLY GOOD live performances on the bonus disc, most notably the 18-minute "Dark Star."

And never forget Phil's message, become an organ donor, give blood, and never forget your dreams.

A great album!!!.......2006-07-20

Being a mobile disc jockey, I have to keep up with all of the new Top 40 hits. I first heard of these guys when Everything You Want came out. I was very hesitant to pick up any of their earlier CDs as I really didnt know what to expect. One day I broke down and bought this album. Believe me I have NO regrets. This is a great CD and shows their melodic sound and great songwriting abilities. If you are a fan of Go and Everything You Want then, as many other customers said, have an open mind. The lyrics in this CD are heart-felt and the acoustic guitar playing is superb. Now when I get around to it, I have to order Running On Ice and Live Stages. Buy this CD, listen to it with an open mind, and I guarantee you will not have any regrets. I surely didn't.

The Best CD I Own............2006-01-05

My brother brought this CD back when he was in college and it hasn't left my CD player since. I am actually writing this review as I order yet another copy to give as a gift. Since it is always in my disc carousel, it is inevitably played whenever I have people over for a party / dinner. Turns out it is as popular w/ my eclectic group of friends as it was over a decade ago w/ me (when I was a teenager!) As written above though, it isn't like their popular radio tunes. However, it is a must buy if you enjoy DMB, James Taylor, Toad the Wet Sprocket, or Jack-o-Pierce!

Absolutely, Absolutely Fabulous.......2002-06-26

In 1995 in Austin, TX, some friends took me to the White Rabbit on Sixth Street to listen to two guys play acoustic guitars. They, of couse, were Vertical Horizon. I had never heard of them before, but wow, the show was incredible.

Since that concert, I have been a big fan. "Everything You Want" was their big breakout record. It's not a bad record, but I admit that I got disenchanted with their live shows after that release. They were loud and electric and lost all of the soul that their earlier shows had. Did these guys sell out? That's what I am wondering.

Anyway, this record is a reminder of what they were before they became household names. All these reviews say the same thing -- the music is folksy. Well, I am not disagreeing. It has some grassroots sound, but what struck me so much was the songwriting. Good stuff. It's a pretty mellow, melancholy record.

It sounds silly, but some of the lyrics just bring tears to my eyes. "Trying to Find Purpose"...I mean, any guy in the world probably can relate to that song sometime in their life. It could be called, "There's something better out there, I know it, and I'll find it someday with you at my side." My favorite one is "Love's Light". It stikes a chord with me. This one could be called, "You and I are so good together, but you can't see that, so I need to let you go before I become an emotional wreck."

For those who are VH fans because of "Everything You Want", then take this review with a grain of salt. The styles are quite different. But the songs here are great, writing is great, just something to listen to on a lazy afternoon.

A pleasant suprise!.......2002-06-15

I guess it helps to know going in that this album is nothing like Vertical Horizon's hit album 'Everything You Want', and that's not neccessarily as bad as it sounds. 'Everything You Want' was a great pop/top-40/commercial rock album that transcended the limitations of that genre because of the great muscianship and quality songwriting, while 'There And Back Again' shows the early beginnings of those positive qualities and strips down the music to its barest essentials: two vocalists who play acoustic guitars.

All of the songs on this album have a down-to-earth, folksy feel to them, but should be accessible to fans of rock music as well. Obviously Keith Kane and Matthew Scannell are influenced by James Taylor and you can hear that throughout the ten compositions. Contrary to that, most of the acoustic guitar work is very aggressive (no laid back folksy strumming here) and includes many muffled and muted chords with a choppy rock style that is more reminiscent of Pete Townshend than anyone else. Both players wrote five songs each for this album, and their song styles are distinctly different; you will immediately hear the difference from 'Trying To Find Purpose' to 'Children's Lullaby'; the former is my favorite song on the disc--I love the guitar work and inspirational lyrics.

Overall, this album fits nicely in my collection because it is so different from most of the music I listen to. If you are not ready to go in with an open mind, then you might be disappointed, especially if you became a fan after 'Everything You Want' and specifically like that type of music. I tend to like all types of music, and 'There And Back Again' was certainly a pleasant suprise from what I expected.

Incredible, but only a peek at what was to come.......2002-06-13

I love many kinds of music. I love bands like the Goo Goo Dolls, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and especially Dave Matthews Band. I love bands like Creed and Default. I love bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden. I even love bands like Godsmack, Kid Rock, Blink 182, and Pink Floyd. But among all those musical greats, Vertical Horizon holds its own as my favorite band of all time. This is an awesome debut album, but only showed a hint of what would become Running On Ice.

Trying To Find Purpose: This is a great song with an awesome
solo--the best one on the album If you like James Taylor, check this one out.

Children's Lullaby: A touching song with great vocals and easy-to-relate-to lyrics. One of Keith Kane's best vocal performances, up there with Shackled and Wash Away.

Footprints In The Snow: A very sad song, but excellent. Matt Scannell proves himself as a songwriter right here.

Love's Light: One of the only VH songs I don't love...it should be called Whithering Away, just listen to the song and see why. That part ruins it for me.

Mountain Song: One of VH's worst is followed by one of their best. This is an awesome, upbeat song, pointing more in the direction of Running On Ice. Another Tayloresque number.

Prayer for an Innocent Man: VH's only religious song. It's a good song, but the lyrics are a little corny ("Let me do thy bidding, yeah"...come on Keith, you can do better).

Lines Upon Your Face: Awesome song, my personal favorite from this album. It's about a friendship perservering through separation.

Willingly: Pretty good, not the strongest on the album though. The lyrics and the music don't fit together.

On The Sea: Incredible song, with truly touching and tragic lyrics. The live version is so much better, but it's a shame this is the only song from this album they still do live.

Liberty: This has a great folksy sound to it, this was their first minor underground radio hit. Great song.

This album is classic, but barely showed the talent waiting to be revealed. If you like this album, I'd suggest Running On Ice. If you like Running On Ice, I'd suggest Live Stages. If you like Live Stages, I'd reccomend Everything You Want. And if you like Everything You Want, I'd highly reccomend you keep an eye out for their new CD, Go, which will be released September 24th 2002!

Excellent Top notch no-holds-barred release!.......2005-03-03

Milira is quite simply excellent, and the passion and strength of her voice is nothing short of awesome. Milira puts authenticity back into the rather over-used term "Diva".

If the reader is unfamiliar with Milira's music, then this is the album to go for because it truly epitomises soul and what this artist can do (not what she is about!).

"Back again", relased on Motown, is a pretty powerful production. The track "One man woman" is simply awesome and has a timless ring to it, right from the start. It demands attention - actively or in the background. I am hard pushed to think of another track, on this album or elsewhere, where Milira's vocal talent is brought out this well.

"Ready for love" is yet another that deserves the highest accolade for this genre. It takes very little for "Three is a crowd" to grow on you - and brilliant only begins to describe "If you really love her" which sort of sticks to a recurring theme in the album: one-too-many in a relationship!

Milira has dared to do her rendition of "Rocket Love" a track better associated with Stevie Wonder from the album Hotter Than July. I am not a big fan of cover tracks but have to say it is not bad as far as 'covers' go.

"Love me this way" takes the tempo a little higher but still lets Milira deliver her powerful vocals the way only a true diva can.

The Good
An excellent album, plenty to choose from. "One man woman" and "Ready for love" are recommended listening.

The Bad
A track or two may sound a little commercial but they all grow on you in the end. Interestingly, the one track written by Milira; "Love always, Milira" is a candidate here albeit it is not so much commercial but rather an opportunity for Milira to express herself.

Verdict
This album is a must have! It is simply excellenty and tailored for easy listening. I believe it features Milira at her very best and vocals that remains wonderfully etched on the brain! Simply excellent!

I waited for this for five years.......2006-06-30

Between Amazone, Ebay and Napster, I don't usually buy CDs anymore, and I usually wait till I can buy them cheaper "new and used". When this set came out, I was excited, mainly by Disc 5, but wasn't going to spend $70 on it. I waited till it was cheap enough, and got it for Father's day this year.
It was worth the wait.

The concept is great. The packaging is great. The recording is great. Disc five is really cool for an ALW aficionado. There are a few real gems on it; my favorites are Petula Clark's "I Could Have Given You More" and "Benedicite."
I've always thought "Gus the Theatre Cat" made a great medley on the piano with "Unexpected Song" and "I DOn't Know How to Love Him," but wished there was an alternate lyric to match the other two songs. Now that I know there *is*, and it's a good lyric, it's a dream come true.
The melody of "Benedicite" is one of my favorites from _Sunset_ (the book mis-identifies it as "SUrrender"; it's actually "The Lady's Paying" and "Eternal Youth is Worth a Little Suffering"). The lyrics are the canticle from Daniel 3, which comes up every odd Sunday in the Divine Office, so it's nice to have cool music to sing it with.

I haven't bought _By Jeeves_ or _THe Beautiful Game_ yet, to it was great to sample them.

There are other parts of the CD taht aren't found in my collection. I like CD 4 "The Hits."

But the selections on CDs 1-3 don't make sense.

First, any self-respecting ALW fan has the Original London Cast of _Phantom_, so six tracks are totally useless. Why not draw from the Canadian cast with Colm Wilkinson? Or pull out some obscure recordings never published.

Why two different tracks with Michael Ball singing "Love Changes Everything", yet they're hardly any different?

On Disc 5 is "It's Only Your Lover Returning," sung by Julie Covington. It's an early draft of the song (Lloyd Webber and Rice went through several suggested titles) and quite nice. The very thing one expects on a Boxed Set.
So why have the Julie Covington "Don't Cry for Me" on disc 1?? The only difference is a few words, but it's otherwise identical. Why not Elaine Paige or Patti Lupone or Madonna?

The _Evita_ section is otherwise the best, choosing a sample from each major recording, though I'd have chosen slightly differently (as above).

There is a great selection of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" from the Sydmonton festival, using the original music that was changed when _Cats_ went to Broadway_. It would have been nice if they'd included more recordings from Sydmonton, like the original lyric of "All I Ask of You" shown on the second DVD to the _Phantom_ movie.

With so many great actress-singers who've played Norma Desmond, why does the collection beat us over the head with Glenn Close?

Paul Miles Kingston must be set for life in royalties, for the number of albums the original recording of "Pie Jesu" has appeared on. "Amigos Para Siempre" is nice, but it reminds me of Shari Lewis's "The Song that Doesn't End," especially when it's been used on so many compilations.

In short, this is a great collection for the obscure material, if you can get it cheap. But for a boxed set, it's a poor sampling, drawn mostly from the most familiar recordings.

Excellent collection but BIG PUBLISHING MISTAKE! .......2006-01-10

Please beware they made a mistake on this. It's actually the shortened Ray Shell version of STARLIGHT EXPRESS from the original 1984 London cast - NOT the El Debarge single from 1987 like it says on the box. I don't know how they let that goof pass. Sorry to Ray Shell. Having said that, this is an outstanding compilation of Lloyd Webber's greatest hits.

ONE OF LLOYD WEBBER'S BEST COMPILATIONS, DESPITE A FEW FLAWS.......2005-03-21

Regardless of the fact that some of his latest efforts (most notably, The Woman in White) are disappointing, there can be little doubt that Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the greatest composers ever to work in the musical theatre. Ever since his "Jesus Christ Superstar" hit the stage in the early 70-is, it was clear that the conception and perception of musicals are never going to be the same again. Many of his songs became standards not only in the theatre history, but also as tops on the charts. Even though he's British, his influence on the shape of the modern musical theatre expanded over the West End boundaries long ago and has thus made an enormous impact on Broadway. Two of his shows ("Cats" and "The phantom of the opera") hold the record as two the longest running shows in the history of Broadway. He has also been the only composer to have three of his shows running at Broadway concurrently. Some of his awards include three Grammies, a Golden Globe, an Oscar and a bunch of Tony awards. But perhaps most of all, Lloyd Webber is responsible for bringing the musicals and the theatre appealing to the wide audiences, who in different circumstances would not consider seeing a musical. The secret of his success is probably the mixture of beautiful and catchy melodies, interesting subject matter (though some, like Starlight Express, are too thin) and grandiose staging.

Over the years many compilations of his work have emerged. In the late 80-is and early 90-is it was the "Encore" series and lately the one-disc collection called "Gold". The one in question here can be considered one of the best currently on the market. First, it includes a 3-disc selections from all of his shows, minus the latest one, i.e., "The Woman in White", which, considering the triviality of the score, is no great lost. The fourth disc covers some of his most known songs sung by the famous artists. Then, there is the fifth disc with previously unreleased material, most of which are the songs ALW wrote with Tim Rice for various artists during the 70-is. The disks are all neatly packed in a hardcover book that features 67 pages of pictures and text with information about each of ALW's shows. One of the other assets here is the perfect sound quality, since all of the tracks have been digitally remastered.

Here are my basic impressions and comments regarding the material on the discs:

* Disc #1 has the selections from "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita", "Cats" and "Song & Dance". The Superstar material mostly comes from the Concept Recording. Although the songs sound beautiful as always, their orchestration is a bit dated now. Only Steve Balsamo's "Gethsemane" from the 1996 revival cast has a modern rock sound. "Evita" comes with the material from all of the major recordings: London, Broadway and the movie productions, as well as the Concept album. No objections here; since this is one of ALW's most satisfying works, every song is just perfect, although Patti LuPone, the Broadway and overall the best Evita, is left with only a couple of lines. With the selections from "Cats", however, I have some doubts. A plus to the choice of the "Jellicle ball" impressive orchestral sequence from the 1998 movie version and "Mister Mistoffelees" from the 1981 London cast. One of the best known ALW's songs, "Memory", also comes from that album. It's a pretty version and Elaine Paige's rendition cannot be matched, but why include this when the definite version, featuring an 80-piece orchestra and Elaine Paige with much better interpretation, can be found in the same movie version. Thusly, one has to buy Elaine Paige's latest 2-disc compilation "Centre Stage: The very best of Elaine Paige" to get that one. And "Gus the theatre cat" is more a recital than a song, so there was not much point in including that. Marti Webb brings her vocal charm to the "Song & Dance" sequence, Sarah Brightman sings "Unexpected song" with her famous soprano, but as much as I like her version, Bernadette Peters, who was in this show on Broadway is strangely left out here.

* Disc # 2 starts with "Starlight Express". This was never one of my favorite ALW's shows; the plot is even lighter than in "Cats" and the 1984 original cast recording is terribly dated. Yet, here we have one terrific duet, "I am starlight" from the original together with three songs from the later revivals and it seems that fresh orchestrations were just the thing Starlight needed. My favorite remains a touchy ballad, "Next time you fall in love". "Requiem" is the most solemn of all ALW's compositions, written in 1985 to commemorate the death of his father. Placido Domingo's tenor rides together with the chorus all the way through the strong "Hosanna", only to be joined by Sarah Brightman in the final moments of this song. She then gives an echoing deliverance of "Pie Jesu". What can be said of ALW's next show, "The Phantom of the Opera"? A phenomenon in its own right, it's easy to see from the six numbers included here why this is one of the best and most beloved musicals of all time. The cast, the music, the story - everything is perfect. Although "Aspects of love" was never a popular hit, it does have some of the most beautiful love melodies ALW has ever written. "Love changes everything" sung by Michael Ball is probably one of the best tunes ever about love. The rest of the selected material here has a dreamy love flavor and the melodies find their way into your brain in the best Lloyd Webber way.

* ALW's first musical, "Joseph and the amazing Technicolor dreamcoat" was more successful in its revival form than the original from the 70-is. The three songs included here are sung by the show stars, Jason Donovan and Donny Osmond. Maria Friedman was not a lucky choice to play the narrator, as the track from the 1998 movie version shows. "By Jeeves" was ALW's only big flop when it came to the stage in the 70-is. The 1995 revival sounds much better though, full of funny numbers in the best manner of the musical comedy. "Travel hopefully" remains one of the show's highlights on this compilation. "Sunset Boulevard" comes next. "Sunset" remains for me one of Webber's best scores; lush and beautiful. I listen to the original cast recording with Patti LuPone all the time. However, here most of the songs are performed by Glenn Close. A big mistake. If you've ever listened the American premiere recording with her, you'll know what I am talking about. She may have a strong stage presence, but her vocal abilities are too limited, and her aggressive approach to the role lacks any subtlety. Therefore, the two big numbers from this show, "With one look" and "As if we never said goodbye" are ruined by the fact she can't sing. The same goes for the American Joe Gillis, who was played by Alan Campbell. Luckily, Patti LuPone and Kevin Anderson, the original Norma and Joe from the London production, make their brief entrance here with the "Perfect year"; enough to show how better they are. The funny thing is, on the jacket and inside of it, Glenn Close and Alan Campbell are credited as performers in this song as well. If this was a mistake on ALW's part, it was a good one. The next ALW's show, "Whistle down the wind" was never a critic's dear and yet the audiences rushed in to see it in London. The score brings back ALW to his rock and roll roots of the seventies and the story is quite interesting. But the selections here are not the happiest, since the cast recording boasts with much better songs. And finally, "The Beautiful Game". Again, we have one of those ALW's shows that is worth in its individual parts rather than as a whole. "Our kind of love" and "Let us love in peace" are two catchy ballads. The latter is a nice amalgam version not available elsewhere. The two other tracks here I could live without.

* Disc # 4 has the songs from all the above shows performed by different artists. The assembled tracks have their pros and cons. For example, we have some previously unreleased stuff, like Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's operettic rendition of "The heart is slow to learn", or a stunning and epic "A kiss is a terrible thing to waste" from "Whistle down the wind", performed by The Metal Philharmonic Orchestra. Then again, what was the point in including almost identical tracks as the ones on the previous disks? So we have Michael Ball again singing "Love changes everything" with only a bit different orchestration; Sarah Brightman comes out again with the same Phantom duets, but only with the different male singers. It would be much more appropriate to include tracks from the Toronto Cast of the Phantom, with Colm Wilkinson. Other pop deliverances (Tina Arena's "Whistle down the wind", Barbra Streisand's "As if we never said goodbye", Boyzone's "No matter what" and many more) were wisely chosen. Patti LuPone is again nowhere to be found and Petula Clark's "With one look" sounds too worn-out.

* The last disc is probably the one that will be of most interest to Lloyd Webber aficionados. It consists of entirely previously unreleased material ALW for the most part wrote for various artists during his early years, with Tim Rice. Some of these tunes, not successful as a singles, were later used in his shows. Thus "Down thru' summer" became "Buenos Aires"in Evita, "Try it and see", an unsuccessful attempt for the Eurovision was used for "King Herod's song" in "Superstar" and so on. Some of these songs are nicely made pop songs: "Make believe love", ALW's first recorded composition, for which he provided the lyrics; "Goodbye Seattle", sung by Paul Raven, who later became Gary Glitter; "Come back Richard, your country needs you", from a never made musical, sung here by Tim Rice, or Latin flavored "Magdalena", with Tony Christie singing. My all time favorite here is a song called "It's easy for you", sung by none other than Elvis Presley himself. Lloyd Webber and Rice sent him a demo recording that he accepted and recorded this live version a couple of weeks before he died. It's amazing to hear how his voice remained in the perfect shape. Also, there is a track of Andrew Lloyd Webber singing "Policle dogs and Jellicle cats" while plying the piano. His voice doesn't sound bad at all.


Taken as a whole, this compilation makes a perfect birthday or Christmas present to any fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber shows, or just anybody interested in some of the best tunes from the modern era of the musical theatre; despite the flaws I mentioned above. To the former, it may just be the final addition for the Andrew Lloyd Webber collection.

SUCH MAGICAL MUSIC OF THE NIGHT!.......2003-01-19

"Evita." "Sunset Blvd." "Starlight Express." "Jesus Christ Superstar." "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." "Requiem." "Aspects of Love." The man who is the most recognized composer in the history of the musical theatre, the man who has won more Tonys than any other composer, the man who boasts the best-selling show of all time ("The Phantom of the
Opera") and the longest-running show of all time ("Cats"), the man whose homes are filled with three Grammys, five Oliviers, a Golden Globe, and Oscar and too many other honors and hosannas to mention, the man knighted in 1992 certainly doesn't need an introduction. Now Decca Broadway pays tribute to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber with "Now and Forever," a spectacular 5-CD set compiled and produced by Sir Andy himself. It's cheaper than a
ticket to "The Producers" ... and more much exciting. This treasure trove contains highlights from all of Webber's shows, and a bonus disc of tunes sung by Betty Buckley, Barbara
Streisand, Jose Carreras, Boy George, Charlotte Church, Madonna, Tom Jones, Petula Clark, even Elvis! A must for lovers of theatre---and good music.

A Must Have for Sir Andrew fans.......2002-05-21

This five-CD collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's career is fantastic. It leaves virtually no stone unturned. I have no doubt that diehard Webber fans will love this, especially for the 5th disc entitled "From the Vaults." This disc alone is worth the price as it contains tunes never before heard by the typical fan. Who knew Elvis did a Lloyd Webber tune?!? I didn't! Also the tune "Benedictine" which the composer wrote for his most recent marriage is not only pretty, but it has the same medley as "The Lady's Paying" from "Sunset Blvd." which I found highly enjoyable. Another great track is the composer himself singing a cut song from "Cats" entitled "Pollicle Dogs and Jellicle Cats" which has the same tune as "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats," but to hear Sir Andrew sing is a blast...he sounds a lot like Al "Year of the Cat" Stewart.
The cuts from the musicals are great but are likely owned by ALW fans as they are on the original cast albums. And I'm glad that there were tunes included from the composers most recent efforts which have yet to make it beyond London (Whistle Down the Wind, Beautiful Game).
My only complaint is the inclusion of way too many tracks by Sarah Brightman. She must've received a great divorce settlement that included having tunes on any ALW collection until the end of time!! Her interpretations of some of the tunes were limp and uninspired. I would've much rather heard casts from around the world rather than yet another song by this disdainful soprano! How about Colm Wilkinson's version of "Music of the Night" from the original Canadian cast of "Phantom"? Or Michael Crawford's version of "Unexpected Song"? What? No Betty Buckley from "Sunset Blvd."? And of course there are songs you KNOW are going to be on the collection before you even listen to it as they have been on EVERY ALW collection for the past decade or so.
A great collection but too much Sarah Brightman!
