LIL WAYNE HAS EVOLVED FROM A RAPPER INTO A BEAST!!
HIS LYRICAL SKILLS ARE UNBELIEVABLE...HE CAN MAKE SENSE OUT OF NON SENSE!!
I WISH I HAD ANOTHER SET OF HANDS SO I COULD GIVE THIS MIXTAPE 4 THUMBS UP!!

Wayne truely is the best rapper alive he can take anyones beats and make them his own..... Like he once said "i can say don't rhyme and it rhyme" he's right..... this cd is dope and i would suggest it to anyone who likes Lil Wayne

5 out of 5 stars Very Impressive.......2007-05-24

Lil Wayne Is in my opinion, the king of mixtapes right now. He is avereging about 1 mixtape every three months. This Mixtape is Awesome. Alot of his other mixtapes have people from his record label, and you only get to hear Weezy on one of the verses. However, on this mixtape he does it mainly by himself. This is more like a full cd or two. Great punchlines, I had to rewind a couple of times because I was dumb founded. Definitely worth the buy. Cant wait for his next mixtape!

Hugely popular in their homeland of Ireland, the Frames top the charts and play to 30,000 people in Dublin. The aptly-titled live album is their fifth and the one they're hoping will connect in America. The quintet's sound draws upon such acts as the Clash (with whom they share a love of the anthemic) and the Pixies (with whom they share a quest for more oblique explorations), as well as on native traditions (albeit updated with a big wallop and galloping propulsion). Recorded before an enthusiastic audience, the band is clearly spurred on by the adoration, as well as a sense of community. The songs often feel like they're giving voice to their countrymen, celebrating a shared sense of justice, outrage, home, faith, and hope. One of the secrets to the band's dazzling and incendiary sound is the mix of full throttle guitar and soaring violin. Lead singer Glen Hansard builds heartfelt ruminations into his between song patter, and leads the band down many surprise avenues, with bits of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" and Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" appearing out of their own numbers. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars Very little risk...........2006-05-08

This is the first review I've ever been compelled to write. An Irish friend suggested The Frames to me based on my taste in music. I bought "Set List" on a whim, having only heard the song Fitzcarraldo. Sometimes live albums are best appreciated with prior knowlege of the music, but this album is so verstitle and impactful that I will waste no time aquiring the rest of their albums. Very charismatic with a huge style range. The lead singer is clearly a wonderful storyteller, both with lyrics and onstage. I haven't taken the CD out of the player since it when in, and have told everyone I know about it. I feel ill-prepared to rate the songs, or even discuss the styles, as I am very new to them. Still, its important for me to share my newfound musical love, in case there is a newbie weighing whether or not they should take a risk. DO IT!

5 out of 5 stars The best music.......2006-01-28

I saw The Frames at Irving Plaza in NYC in the Fall of 2005 and still get chills thinking about it. It was the best show I've been to in a long time. Anything by The Frames is worth a listen especially a live album. This cd is great!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best bands out there.......2005-10-23

Having spent almost a year in Ireland, I had heard of the Frames a bit, and a friend of mine made me a copy of Set List. I immediately fell in love with them. I also had the pleasure of seeing them at Oxegen, and in Boston. So I have seen them in their home country, and in mine. They put on a great show no matter where they are, and this album really shows their abilities off. Their sound is very together, and you can feel every word that Glen sings. The violin really makes their sound combined with Glen's voice. They do have a unique sound, but it is one worth listening to. I prefer their live sound to their recorded sound, it's more real and heartfelt. If you ever have the opportunity to see them, I highly reccomend them. And if not, Set List is a decent substitute.

5 out of 5 stars What a pity!!!.......2004-11-23

It blows my mind everyday that this band hasn't blown up the American charts yet. I blame it on their promoters. I lived in Ireland in 2002, and the best experience I took from that country other than my wife, is THE FRAMES. This band is the most amazing band to have ever set foot on stage. They are even more amazing in concert. Glenn Hansard has the most amazing stage presence ever seen, and can tell a story in which the whole crowd is completely captivated. I try to burn as many cd's for friends that I can so they can get some airplay over here in the states, and everyone that has heard them says the same thing. This is the best undiscovered band in the history of music. I can't wait for them blow up the charts over here. So set your calanders for Feb. 8th for their new release "Burn The Maps". Oh by the way I already had my copy sent over, and this cd will blow your f&^%$#ing minds. No joke.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2004-09-30

I just got back from a trip to Ireland and had picked this up in a record store. I'd heard of the band (big fan of "The Commitments" and any good bio of the cast lists Glen Hansard's formation of the Frames). I had no clue how good this cd was going to be! I have listened to it non-stop, a feat previously only held by Damien Rice. Absolutely amazing - one of the best live discs I've heard, you can hear the smiles on faces of the musicians, particularly in the vocals. Going to to buy another Frames cd right now, in fact...

Amazon.com essential recording

Because he's long been stereotyped by the rousing neo-romantic adventure scores for the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Jurassic Park franchises, it's easy to forget that composer John Williams is hardly idiomatically challenged. When Steven Spielberg gratifyingly used the clout of his enormous commercial success to produce and direct this brave Holocaust drama, his longtime musical collaborator used the opportunity to display both the depth and maturity of his musical gifts and training, producing a score with sad, evocative melodies frequently carried by the violin of the great Itzhak Perlman. Rich with ethnic nuance and showcasing the composer's masterful orchestral/choral subtlety, Williams's emotionally compelling score for Schindler's List also won the Academy Award for Best Dramatic Score. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars powerful and sad.......2007-05-15

this soundtrack compliments one of the greatest films ever made. that being said, this can also stand on its own as one of the greatest classical music ever composed. just be sure to keep a towel next to you. i was just hearing the samples and i am already crying my a** off. enjoy

5 out of 5 stars a must have.......2007-05-06

It's by far one of the best pieces of music ever written for a movie. Just by listening it brings back the same feeling of overwhelming that the movie had.

5 out of 5 stars John Williams' Finest Hour.......2007-04-28

Schindler's List has long been regarded as one of the finest films ever created and I will not dispute this one iota. For anyone that appreciates this film, it can easily be said as well that its success owes much thanks to the incredible score by John Williams. The main them is simple yet will be one of those few works that gives you goosebumps and chills you to the core.

If you appreciate classical music, love scores, or just feel the Schindler's List is a moving masterpiece, you owe it to yourself to listen to Williams work and make sure to have the Kleenex by your side.

A masterpiece in film scoring that few composers have ever come close to achieving.

***** HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION

5 out of 5 stars Schindler's List.......2007-04-10

Most wonderful music ever written by John Williams, soothing, yet powerful. The music can bring tears to your eyes and joy to your heart, at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Mournfully beautiful.......2007-03-06

I have many of John Williams' most celebrated music (soundtracks, olympic music, etc.) and he is a great composer with big, full, dramatic sounds. However, this soundtrack is very different than much of his other music- simpler, understated, and incredibly somber. It captures and complements the dramatic sadness of the movie, but it also stands quite well on its own apart from the film. The score is just beautiful.

Good selection of music, poorly performed and badly arranged. Good album for a tag sale. Same comment applies for Volume I.

5 out of 5 stars Great music listein to while you read in bed.......2005-08-21

5 out of 5 stars A must buy for the non-snobbish classical music fan........2004-10-22

I bought Vol. 1 of this series and was quite satisfied, but I have to say I'm more than satisfied with this one. If you can just mellow out and enjoy some great pieces, you'll love this CD. #15 on Disc 2 is almost worth the price alone!

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

The Grascals' acclaimed 2005 debut demonstrated their strength was modern, streamlined bluegrass with ample nods to tradition. Brimming with instrumental virtuosity, this near-perfect effort reiterates those strengths. By seamlessly blending the new with the traditional, they allow the hilarious contemporary number "Being Me" (featuring a Dierks Bentley cameo) to coexist with "Don't Tell Mama," a moralistic, anti-DUI ballad complete with a somber George Jones recitation. Their takes on Merle Haggard's "You Don't Have Very Far to Go" (enhanced by 1960s pedal steel great Lloyd Green), the Osborne Brothers' "Hard Times" and "Roll Muddy River," and Bill Monroe's 1940s favorite "Will You Be Lovin' Another Man" are spirited without being imitative. The bluegrass explosion, which brought unprecedented exposure to icons like Ralph Stanley and stardom to Allison Krauss, unfortunately opened the doors for a slew of lesser acts who either wallow in arty pretense or put a campy spin on classic bluegrass. The Grascals here affirm one truth: the best, old or new, will always trump the trendy. --Rich Kienzle

This is the best Bluegrass I have heard in a long, long time. I can't wait for their next CD

5 out of 5 stars Very discriminating, well-rounded and resourceful performers.......2006-12-25

Playing Time - 40:40 -- The Grascals are on the fast track. In 2005, their debut CD became one of my top ten favorites of the year. Besides great music, the band is a cohesive and collaborative unit built around six talented friends who share common goals. The group members have had previous professional experience with The Osborne Brothers, Larry Cordle & Lonesome Standard Time, Dolly Parton's Blue-niques, The Sidemen, and many country music superstars. You won't find much better musicians with consummate bluegrass (and country) sensibilities than The Grascals' Terry Eldredge (lead vocals, guitar), Jimmy Mattingly (fiddle), David Talbot (banjo, vocals), Jamie Johnson (guitar, vocals), Danny Roberts (mandolin) and Terry Smith (bass). Dolly Parton invited The Grascals to open all concerts on her Hello, I'm Dolly tour in the fall of 2004, as well as to join other musicians backing up Dolly each evening. Guests on "Long List of Heartaches" include George Jones, Dierks Bentley, Steve Wariner, The Jordanaires, Hargus "Pig" Robbins, Lloyd Green, Bob Mater, and Kent Wells.

These six guys are superior instrumentalists, and every solo resonates with some hot licks. Crisp, clean rhythm guitar and deep resonating bass fill out their sound. The Grascals don't push the envelope too far from conventional traditional bluegrass orthodoxy when they take on more standard fare. As a definite strength, these bluegrass phenoms know exactly what a song requires. Eldredge delivers his lead vocals in a gutsy, high-lonesome manner. The Grascals simply have good taste when it comes to arrangements, techniques employed, and musicianship.

The Grascals' contemporary material allows them to take more risks. Some light percussion (Tom Roady) and pedal steel (Lloyd Green) embellishes track 3, "You Don't Have Very Far To Go," a song of hurt written by Merle Haggard and Red Simpson. The opening up-tempo cut of "Home" has no chorus but incorporates an interesting harmonization of the word "home" each time it comes around at the end of verses. If you're a "master of disaster," then you'll end up right at the top of the catchy "Long List of Heartaches." Paying respect to the seminal influences of Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt, The Grascals tear up "Will You Be Loving Another Man?" They keep that one at full throttle. Dierks Bentley shares verses with Terry Eldredge as they express the things they're really best at are "Being Me" as they have a little angel and devil haunting them. Hey, I never knew that "lor dee dee" is really just hillbilly for "c'la vie." (that's life!) The only instrumental on the album, "Cut Your Wheels" has a nice descending chordal run, but I think a guest resophonic guitarist would've really helped embellish this one.

"My Night to Howl" was first presented years ago by the Boys From Indiana, and some exciting mandolin picking is about the only redeeming element of this song that is mostly filler. "Hoedown In Motown" (written by Steve Wariner and Harley Allen) re-establishes the groove with a recipe for partying up north with southern sun, sweet tea, and fried chicken. These are the kind of hooky songs that bluegrass bands need to find to bring expressive variety to their sets. "Don't Tell Mama" is a fantastic ballad about the perils of drinking and driving as a young man dying says, "I can't leave this world with mama thinking, I met the Lord with whiskey on my breath." If you think work's got you down and stressed, then cue up "Hard Times," to hear about a guy so tired of working that he's ready to drink himself to death. They close the set with an inspirational slow ¾-time gospel number, "Did You Forget God Today?" that is first pew.

From traditional to contemporary, The Grascals certainly don't disappoint us with their broad selection of material that will appeal to many tastes. In fact, there are no-holds-barred vocals, tasteful instrumental work, and an overall sound that jumps out of the speakers. I personally enjoy an eclectic set of bluegrass with a few countryish and gospel twists, and that's why I dig this masterful band. The Grascals are very discriminating, well-rounded and resourceful performers with a high degree of showmanship and entertainment value. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars Getting better.......2006-09-13

These boys do a right fine job and are definitely worth following. It's apparent that they are shooting for a distinctive style, something above the usual and overdone fare of most Bluegrassers today.

The selections on this CD are well balanced in that they keep light listeners interested while also providing keen observers a good showcase for their diverse talent. Close study reveals that Terry Eldredge and Jamie Johnson both make for outstanding lead singers. The trios are as expected---Good, but this reviewer finds the duets to be the most entertaining. Terry and Jamie have obviously worked hard to match one another's phrasings and slurs, so much so that they leave the listener yearning for more.

As for the boy's picking abilities, here are some random thoughts:

**Unbelievable as it may be, the rhythm guitar is actually playing RHYTHM---as opposed to a stream of punchy syncopated nerve-racking stabs that MIMIC rhythm. KUDOS.
**Having one good lead singer in a band is a plus, but two is nearly unbeatable. Let Jamie sing more, please.
**The fiddle is charmingly understated but excellent. Thanks Guys.

If any criticism is worthy of mention, it would be this: LOSE THE COVERS.
Flatt, Scruggs, and Monroe songs, notwithstanding their importance, have been done to death, to the point that the carcass no longer attracts the skinniest of vultures. As for the Osborne Brothers' signature songs, there's no way under the sun that the boys will ever come close to reaching the peak of that mountain, much less Base Camp. Replace "Roll Muddy River" with another "Long List of Heartaches"---THAT'S where the money is.

If the Grascals continue striving for better recordings, that is, sharpen their abilities, select their material more carefully, and make their sound palatable for more folks, then success is just around the corner for them.

5 out of 5 stars Second "cup" good as the first!.......2006-09-06

Whether in concert or the studio the Grascals have set the bar high for contemporary bluegrass bands! The music is real bluegrass not so diluted with other influences as to be "no-grass" The guest stars,George Jones, add to the music rather than just add a name to the cd for selling power.
The playing is top notch and the vocals are perfect in harmony and pitch. These guys can sing.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

It was February and a group of us decorated the lounge with black, gold, and silver tableclothes and balloon bouquets, and scattered around clap boards and faux film strip on the tables, along with movie trivia cards and black and gold wrapped mints. I made a walk-of-fame star for every employee and taped them on the walls around the room. We also laid down a red carpet from the entrance of the room to about the center with the decorated tables flanking both sides. We sat up the snack table with a sign that said, "Studio Commissary" and went with theme snacks like "James Bonbons with Halle Berry sauce," and "The Queen's scones." Each week we took a quarter of the walk-of-fame stars and posted them on the bulletin board for the staff to write peer compliments under. At the end of the week these stars were taken down and the next set of stars was posted.

This CD really set the mood for employees as they entered the lounge for the first time on that first day after it was decorated, and during the party at the end of the month. The month ended with an Academy Award party with an Oscar going to each employee for outstanding effort in whatever category (best dressed, best supporting staff member, most animated story teller, most pleasant entercom voice, most punctual, best sense of humor, most artistic, etc.), and they were given their stars with the peer compliments attached to the back. Everyone commented on how special they felt and how neat the theme was. Good morale booster.

This CD would also be perfect for the ambiance at your own Academy Awards party at home. Print out those ballots, cast your votes, pop some popcorn and pass around the Juji fruits, and let's watch the Oscars!

5 out of 5 stars Kunzel does it yet again!.......2004-11-23

Kunzel & The Cincinnati Pops do a great job everytime, and this is no exception. I'm telling you, if you ever thought that purely intrumental/orchestral was unattractive, this will change your mind. Never a disappointment!

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music.......2002-12-12

If you love that music from all those movies you've seen, then this is the CD you want! It is fantastic!! I want more!! I hope Erich Kunzel will come out with some music from older movies and maybe some TV programs. Listening to his music is better than watching the movie.

5 out of 5 stars More than Beautiful!!.......2002-12-11

This is the absolute best CD they ever put together! And that is saying a lot as we are very picky about what music we like. This is the kind of music that makes you 'feel' deeply. It encourages you to dream big and love living! Forget the grooves, drums and bangs and listen to something incredibly beatiful! You won't be sorry for the money invested in this one bit of sanity in such a hectic world.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one you should own.......2002-10-27

If you are looking for just one solid collection of memorable movie themes, this is it. Other CDs mix marches and fanfares with quieter tracks, which makes for a jarring listening experience at times. This CD, however, has a consistent feel all the way through. Melodic, calming, and, best of all, interesting. These movie tracks weren't selected simply for their sound, but also because they are GOOD. You get the best of the best: James Horner, Alan Silvestri, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Ennio Morricone, and Randy Edelman.

5 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Joan Tears Off the Covers .......2006-07-18

Joan Jett (nee, Joan Marie Larkin) first gained fame as the teenage guitarist and singer for prototypical all-grrl band, the "Runaways," ("Cherry Bomb"), then continued her success with "Joan Jett and the Blackhearts," which produced (among many other songs) the hit "I Love Rock 'N Roll," which reached Billboard's #1 spot in the Spring of 1982. Jett recorded many covers during the 'Blackhearts' years, including the seminal "I Love Rock 'N Roll" (written by "The Arrows"), as well as a great version of "Crimson and Clover" and "Do You Wanna Touch Me."

This 1990 release is all covers, and is mostly outstanding. Highlights include her ironic, aggressive rendition of "Pretty Vacant," her voice appropriately drone-y, yet soaring over the backgrounds; "Love Hurts," in which her covers outshines the original; and risky--because the originals were done by rock icons--but surprisingly superb and enjoyable treatments of "Love Me Two Times" (the Doors), "Up from the Skies (Jimi Hendrix)," "Have You Seen the Rain (Credence Clearwater Revival)," and "Celluloid Heroes (the Kinks)" featuring Ray Davies and a very satisfying guitar solo.

The songs are muscular, energetic, and heavy on the rhythm section (bass and drums), giving a raw, propulsive feeling to most of the songs (e.g., "Tush" in which--unlike ZZ Top--she doesn't distort the pronunciation of the title, and "Dirty Deeds," more honest and less gimmicky than the original, IMHO). The only disappointing cuts were "Roadrunner USA," probably never a great song anyway, and her belabored try at "Time Has Come Today." I must admit that I've never heard a good cover of the latter song. At least Joan's take is far superior to the awful Steve Earle version. Apparently, only the Chambers Brothers can do this song right.

Parenthetically, Jett never received what she was owed for "I Love ROck and Roll," and the ensueing years are a testament to her multifaceted talent (producing, acting), and longevity (she has been both pre- and post-punk, and was a participant/role model for some in the "riot grrl" movement]). Her "Greatest Hits" LPs will give you more original Joan Jett (including the famous "Cherry Bomb," on which she "covers" the Runaways own song), but "The Hits" deserves your attention for the (mostly) great selection of songs sung by the now-iconic J. Jett. Excellent production (in New York City), nice photo of Jett on the cover, but, unfortunately, no liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars Great cover tunes from one hot chic!.......2006-03-20

Joan Jett is one hot heavy metal chic covering some awesome tunes. I am shocked that none of these songs became hits in their own rights. Joan does them that good. If you like her style, then this album is a must. I know you won't be let down.

4 out of 5 stars COVERING THE BASICS.......2005-10-28

Since nearly all of leather-clad pre-Riot GRRRL Joan Jett's biggest hits were cover versions anyway---even I Love Rock and Roll was originally an English hit for the Arrows---an entire LP of rock classic remakes makes perfect sense. Numerous artists have released all-cover platters of their fave influences, including the Ramones and Rush, but Jett's ripping trip through time is one of the genre's best. The smartly titled Hit List showcases the Blackheart Babe's crunching, glam-punctuated takes on AC/DC's DIRTY DEES DONE DIRT CHEAP, ZZ Top's lusty anthem TUSH, and even PRETTY VACANT, from fellow punk pioneers the Sex Pistols. For contrast, the Kinks' doleful tribute to Hollywood's past, CELLULOID HEROES, and Nazareth's biggest number LOVE HURTS also get the nod. Like Brownsville Station before her, this Suzi Quatro protege can give nearly any oldie, be it TIME HAS COME TODAY or ROADRUNNER, the Gary Glitter treatment and make it seem like her own idea. This SOUNDS like Joan Jett's greatest hits, and you'll have so much fun listening, you won't even care that none of them really are.....RATING: FOUR BLACK HEARTS

1 out of 5 stars Very dissapointed.......2005-01-15

Well, the CD title says Hit list, and these songs are hits from 70's and 80's. But Joan Jett couldn't deliver any of these hits as good as it should be, on all songs here, her vocals are very lame & weak. Musicianship sucks, I know Blackhearts can play, but here it's just a dissapointment, maybe, this album is the greatest mistake of Joan Jett & B's career. Avoid this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Rockin'.......2004-04-25

The whole cd is worthy of praise. Not often do I buy a cd I like every song on it. This is one of those.
