An elegantly programmed mix of trip-hop, vintage jazz, and contemporary female voices (Lori Carson, Sam Phillips, Portishead, and Cocteau Twins included). New tracks by Liz Phair ("Rocket Boy"), Hoover ("2 Wicky"), and Mazzy Star ("Rhymes of an Hour") are priorities. --Jeff Bateman

4 out of 5 stars Stealiong Beauty soundtrack.......2007-04-11

The music is awesome. Divirsified and perfect for a lazy afternoon/evening cooking at home with your significant other. The DVD has beautiful scenerey but a plot that sucked. So glad I watched the movie to hear the soundtrack, You won't be disapointed-it's ageless.

5 out of 5 stars Dreamy and Sentimental Mood.......2006-09-01

The mood throughout this album is fairly consistent and dreamy with edge in places, like in Hooverphonics beautiful 2Wicky: "I can hurt you, you can hurt me...better be sure before you leave me for another one."

The passionate "Glory Box" explores "just wanting to be a woman" with music that almost purrs in places, deliciously beautiful. Looking through the new frame of being in love, the pictures awaken in passionate longings for a "reason to love you."

Stevie Wonder's funky "Superstition" lightens the mood and then Nina Simone slips you into dreams in "My Baby Just Cares for Me." Her silky sweet voice creates a mood of tranquility and nostalgia. The mood becomes even more nostalgic in "I'll be Seeing You." These three songs are perfect in this order.

Soft and dreamy, Mazzy Star's voice captures you completely. "You Won't Fall" is guitar driven and changes the imaginative scenery into wide open spaces. Before you were feeling romantic and now the music turns a little more edgy. "I Need Love" has an element of danger and adventure.

I would have ended this album with The Pointers Sisters "Happiness" to really wake you up after the dreamy sentimental journey.

5 out of 5 stars College years.......2006-04-04

Back in college my girlfriend and I would listen to this tremendous album alot, especially with puff the magic dragon. Saw the movie about 8 yrs. after hearing the soundtrack about 100 times; it's not too bad either. Great chill out music, and terrific compilation of artists. Portishead was an exceptional find due to this album, she is just fantastic. Hooverphonic is also a cool techno-style floaty group discovered here. If you like these two, try out Sneaker Pimps "Splinter" or "Bloodsport" for chill, somber tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection!.......2005-02-23

My only comment: I would have preferred the inclusion of Roland Gift's song and skip the Liz Phair ("Rocket Boy"). The Liz Phair was a bit jarring in the midst of the dreamy mood of the rest of the collection. Nevertheless, it's a lovely album and so is the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Missing.......2004-09-13

This is not only an amazing soundtrack, but it's the perfect backdrop for those intimate moments. Romantic and sexy, the songs are totally groove-able and there's never an irritating transition. I lost my copy and have been hoping to find it (or recover it from an ex) before I'm forced to buy a new one, but let's face it -- I'm breaking down without it. The songs get into your head and move you, and I'm a mess without them. My rating of 5 stars means it's an album that won't leave your discplayer for days.

Album Description

With 1984's Stealing Fire, Bruce Cockburn's words and music took on a greater urgency than ever before. The previous year, he made his first trip to Central America on behalf of the international development group OXFAM. While in southern Mexico, he visited a refugee camp that had recently been attacked by the helicopters of the U.S.-backed Guatemalan Army. The horrific experience sparked the anger-filled "If I Had a Rocket Launcher," a song which brought him unprecedented attention--garnering heavy radio airplay and regular video rotation on MTV. Stealing Fire is full of many of Cockburn's most powerful political songs, yet it boasts some of his most romantic numbers as well. From "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" to "Making Contact," whether issuing calls to action or cries for help, Bruce Cockburn's poetry demands attention. Upon its release Stealing Fire immediately staked a claim as one of the most compelling albums by any singer-songwriter in the 1980s. Nearly twenty years later, the album's impact isy remastered for CD, features Leon Redbone in top form on a stellar collection of chestnuts and originals. Supporting Leon is a star-studded ensemble including Howard Alden, David Bromberg, Vince Giordano, Eric Weissberg and the Roches, with a special guest appearance by Hank Williams, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best!.......2007-05-03

This album is one of the best albums on my short list of so far all time. Dancing In The Dragon's Jaw is there along with a few others in rarified air. This is Bruce Cockburn at his peak and a fantastic concept ablum. This is worth every cent and more and it is this kind of writing that has helped to change my life for the Better! Buy this if you love well written poetic melodic beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars The Finest Album From A Righteous Folk-Rocker.......2006-10-01

STEALING FIRE is the finest album that Bruce Cockburn ever released. The reason I'd wear a T-shirt with this album cover more readily than any featuring his other album covers for a chance to meet my favorite actresses, or on a first date with a girl I'd recently met, is not because of the views expressed, many of which I strongly support, but because of how he expresses them here as opposed to on his other albums. Rather than just go for polemics and broadsides, Cockburn actually describes how the situations being discussed in the songs affect individuals. Prime examples include a song about romance under the most difficult circumstances ("Lovers In A Dangerous Time"), and one about a personal desire for revenge vs. passionate pacifism ("If I Had A Rocket Launcher"), in response to U.S.-funded dictatorships in Latin America. Cockburn's belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted makes STEALING FIRE an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience, as well as making it perfectly normal for a young man to want to wear the album-cover T-shirt to impress a cute girl.

5 out of 5 stars Kick at the Darkness Till It Bleeds Daylight.......2004-09-28

How many artists do you know that U2 quotes in their songs? That line, from Cockburn's "Lovers In A Dangerous Time," eventually made its way into the U2 canon ("God Pt 2"). But it belongs to Cockburn, and is on this, his most perfectly politically charged album. The song "Nicaragua" sounded close enough to sympathizing with the rebels that it even found Cockburn under fire from the Reagan Administration. But it was the naked fury of "If I Had A Rocket Launcher" that drives the point home. The frustration and helplessness fueling the rage that would make a person declare "if I had a rocket launcher, some sonofab*#ch would die" is universal, and it gave Cockburn one of his best known songs.

The compositions on "Stealing Fire" were inspired by Cockburn's fact finding trek with OXFAM through Mexico and Latin America, and they put the face on the political turmoil of the region at that time. "Peggy's Kitchen Wall" nakedly shows the true scope of what warring governments would rather have you not see, and "Sahara Gold" paints a shimmering portrait of the region. Cockburn's always had a fine eye for detail, and that shows in both "Gold" and in "Dust and Diesel" (the original album closer).

In 1984, only Peter Gabriel and U2 were making statements as grand as Cockburn's "Stealing Fire," and outside of The Clash, there has never been an anti-war statement as anger-filled as "Rocket Launcher." Twenty years later, "Stealing Fire" still burns with the sound of the truth.

(PS - the bonus tracks, after the graceful mix of the original album, sound forced and didactic. Once again, proof that some unreleased songs should stay that way.)

5 out of 5 stars buy this!!!!!.......2004-07-03

This is probably Bruce's best cd. Beautifuly written and not one bad song. Some latin influenced songs such as Nicaragua, Making Contact(makes you feel like doing the Samba Dance)and Dust and Diesel. Great lyrics on this album which also has Bruce's great sense of humour(smiling girl directing traffic
flow,
45 strapped over cotton print dress,
marimba brown and graceful limbs,
give me a moment of loneliness.

5 out of 5 stars He is a Poet Too!.......2004-06-14

"Maybe the Poet" and "Lovers in a Dangerous Time" are the best tracks. Bruce continues his continual sojourn into life, love and the truth that hurts..and that is politics. You cannot write just about love without involving the ugly politics of the human race, as we see face to face in "Peggy's Kitchen Wall"

Bravo Bruce...another winner!!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

4 out of 5 stars "When She Danced With Me, Our Hearts Were Free...".......2006-06-09

This review refers to "Stealing Home: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" CD(Atlantic Recording)..

Okay, so the first thing you want to know is why did I go 4 stars for this beautiful album that has a 5 star selection and performances? Only because it is too short! 32 minutes is not nearly long enough. Even if they would have added more of the score of the "Stealing Home" theme music I would still have been happily swaying to the music. The CD at this time, costs more then the DVD, shouldn't we get a little more time with it.(Especially since music is easily obtained these days from other sources.)

Now that I've got that off my chest I want to say..I LOVE the music from "Stealing Home"; a film about life(and baseball) that once seen, will always stay with you. The selection is a mix of nostalgic numbers that set the mood for the era of the young Bill, Katie and Alan Applebee, some moving instrumentals of the theme music by David Foster, and of course the one that makes it worth the price of admission alone;"And When She Danced" , the gorgeous love theme.

Bookended by instrumentals it opens and closes with the "Stealing Home" Theme and "Katie's Theme" Both written and Performed by Foster exquisitely.Go back in time, to a time of innocence with "Sherry",'Sherry Bay yay Bee'(sorry I couldn't resist singing out loud!),by the Four Seasons, "Poison Ivy" by The Nylons, "Great Balls Of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis",and "Bo Diddley" by Bo Diddley(of course). Those will definitely have you moving and singing along. The Everly Brothers' "All I Have To Do Is Dream", is as wonderful as it always was, and is a treat to hear anytime! "And When She Danced" written by Foster and performed as a lovely duet by Foster and Marilyn Martin, and the "Home Movies" track, may actually evoke a lump in your throat if you have seen the film. There are 11 tracks in all.(the buying info has a complete list, but list some of the artists on the wrong songs)

This is an album that stands on it's own as some great stuff even if you haven't seen the film. But if you have seen it, you better have the film on hand. If you listen to this album you will want to view the film again!

So even though it is too short, I would still recommend it. The music is so good, it's one that stands up to many repeat playings.

"Go back in time, to a place in your mind, to the one who knew, a part of you, that you just couldn't find..."
Enjoy....Laurie

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Treasure.......2006-02-10

David Foster showcases his true mark of excellence with this soundtrack. Wonderfully crafted, romantic songs like "And When She Danced" duet with Marilyn Martin and "Katie's Theme," encapsulate the characters and the tragic love story of the film. The disc also sports classic tunes from Bo Diddley, The Nylons, and Jerry Lewis. This is one soundtrack that should not be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Great music..........2005-11-19

While I enjoyed the movie, the music just brought it all together. The song, "When She Danced," brings back the scene on the beach of newly found love and just how special it can be. I loved this soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars My All-Time Favorite.......2005-08-11

"Stealing Home" is the movie that has a special place in my heart. And it is still my all-time favorite.

The song "And When She Dance" is the reason I got an iPOD, so I could listen to it while watching the sunset on a boardwalk, thinking of my own Katie...

5 out of 5 stars Pure David Foster.......2003-03-18

If you like David's compositions, this cd is a must have.
Wonderful pieces and a great sound, plus "ac" songs of all times.

Excitement doesn't come cheap, and Popa Chubby gets it every way he can in these 13 eclectic songs. The New York City singer/axe-mangler keeps things rolling at a heart-thumping pace by one-upping Satan on "Slide Devil Man Slide" and the jazz-inflected instrumental "The Devil's Guitar," running drugs in "Smuggler's Game," and cranking the steel-on-steel peal of six-string slide to the max. But he makes time for soul, too, plunging into the funky old-school R&B of "Back in My Baby's Arms" and covering Mississippi hill country matriarch Jessie Mae Hemphill's prayerful "Lord, Help the Poor and Needy" (retitled here "In the World"). Toss in the blues-rocker "Long Deep Hard and Wide" and the acoustic bluegrass thriller "Buffalo Chips"--where Chubby blazes through a sweet and breezy melody on mandolin, Dobro, and guitar--and you've got the full profile of an artist whose talent is even bigger than his considerable girth. --Ted Drozdowski

Album Description

The undisputed "King of the New York City Blues" returns with an electrifying selection of hard-charging, guitar-driven anthems. Popa's signature brand of progressive, lyrically incisive blues rocks like there's no tomorrow. "Stealing the Devil's Guitar" features twelve new Popa songs and a cover of Jessie Mae Hemphill's legendary "In This World."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Big man, Big guitar!.......2007-05-12

Popa Chubby is a mountain of a man and even bigger mountain of a guitar player. He plays with a hard edge, yet his strong point is his melodies. I have seen him several times and met him. He meditates before each show and his intensity is evident in his performance. This album is one of his best, so far. I'm sure there is more to come from this prolific writer/player. If you like hard edge electric blues with great riffs and melodies and even humorous lyrics, get this CD. Popa Chubby RULES!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Another Decent Release By The Big Man!.......2006-06-02

This is an interestingly different blues recording from Popa Chubby. There are plenty of noteworthy guitar licks and all original tunes, with the lone exception of the cover of Jessie Mae Hemphill's "In This World". As you might expect from this unusually large man, he is all over the place on this recording. The CD opens with "Slide Devil Man Slide" with lyrics spoken in a manner which made me recall the 70's "Hot Rod Lincoln" by Commander Cody. He maintains that rather awkward style on two other tracks, "Young Guns" and "Smugglers Game." While that is style will not appeal to everyone, Popa returns to a rocking blues style on songs like "Long Deep Hard and Wide" and two up-tempo instrumentals, "Kinda Dicey" and "Buffalo Chips." To me the standout track is the mid tempo "Why I Can't Have You." Overall, this is not as good as some of Popa's earlier releases but in this day of cookie cutter blues, the originality of this composition is worth noting.

5 out of 5 stars best Popa Cnubby CD so far.......2006-05-15

I post this review on Amazon when the CD came out in Europe not long ago. Now after several weeks of listening I can only confirm my first impression - best Popa Chubby recording so far! Recomended.

"Got the CD the other day, mainly because I am completist fan of Popa Chubby. His latest live CD/DVD package is good, but not excellent. Stealing The Devil's Guitar is in par with his best recordings to date and then some better.

Obviously every artist wishes his latest work is his strongest. With this CD it's true. This is kind of "Best of..." package with newly written tunes. I have heard a tune or two live before, however the studio recordings are above expectations. Popa Chubby is versatile (uses and uses them well) number of guitars, diverse and above all entertaining. His voice is matching the guitar playing and the songs are strong. With the instrumentals I needed some time to get use with, but now I am enjoying them big time. There's a Hendrix cover (Axis, bold as love) that gets the full 5 ***** stars right away. And of course the ever presented guitar solos.

Popa Chubby has a instantly recongnisable tone and sound. His guitar is harsh and melodic in the same time and his love for jazz druming is well hinted. He's a strong storyteller and this is his best storytelling CD".

The sound of insurgency comes to life as Brooklyn's Radio 4 return with their unmatched blend of post-punk thunder, bass-&-percussion driven grooves and politically charged lyrics.

3 out of 5 stars "Good" in places, but very uneven/generic dance rock (the songs all sound the same!).......2005-06-25

At first I loved this CD, but then I realized that it didn't contain much depth and that the songs all sounded very similar. There are definitely highlights, but the ones that aren't are noticably worse. "Party Crashers", "State Of Alert", and "Absolute Affirmation", for example, are pretty good mindless songs, but really you wouldn't mind not having them either. It's one of those situations where if you have the songs, cool, but if you don't you wouldn't care much. Not an entirely unsatisfying purchase, but I couldn't really recommend this album when there are so many better ones out there to get first.

Highlights include:
"Party Crashers"
"State Of Alert"
"The Death Of American Radio"
"Nation"
"Absolute Affirmation"

3 out of 5 stars Vague Politics; Good Groove.......2004-10-20

More consistent than Gotham!, Radio 4's major-label debut Stealing of a Nation is too much a good thing or, in the case of this dance-inducing CD, too much of the same thing. Their Gang-of-4-at-the-afterhours-disco riffs are fun and, on a song-by-song basis, motivating, but the beat doesn't let up on this 12 song CD until the last track, "Coming Up Empty", which becomes the most interesting piece here by dint of its novelty (a faux-Eastern melody line and a tempo that isn't defined by BMP's). And their politics are vague, other than that they seem against it, whatever "it" is. Still, Stealing is a beautifully engineered CD with thick beats and pounding guitars. At this point, content would be nice, but isn't necessary.

I don't know what to think when I read something bad about this album... if this is not one of the greatest albuns of this year, I don't know what to think... personal taste??? I don't know...
I just know one thing, I'm listening this since I got it, and, after Gotham, I was anxious... this is not what I was expecting, but, MUCH BETTER THAN THAT, this guys are GREAT, MARVELLOUS, I am always searching for new bands and is getting really difficult to find something that touch me like this guys did... I could put it in Gang of 4 and Clash matters, but, believe me, it's beyond... simply the best...

4 out of 5 stars Think for yourself.......2004-09-23

The problem with having your name bandied about exclusively by hipsters and indie geeks is that eventually they turn on you. Radio 4 were loosely affiliated with the DFA production team for about 5 minutes and because of this, hordes of Rapture fans and casual alternative types who liked "Dance to the Underground" (on the car commercial) flocked to Gotham! like it was the second coming of the Strokes. Critics weren't much better -- they dismissed the band for retreading Gang of Four and the Clash as if it wasn't bands like this, who carry such a torch, that exposed them to Gang of Four in the first place. Now Radio 4 have moved on beyond the indie labels and the hipsterdom and the Go4 retreads, and they're still being lambasted. The sad thing is that this record is actually quite strong; there isn't a lot of variation from song to song, but the choruses groove themselves into your head and the busy, slick dance production exalts Anthony Roman's bass to give the whole thing a mighty wallop. "Party Crashers" makes a great intro single, despite what Pitchfork may want you to think, mainly because it is recognizably *Radio 4* and probably the first song of theirs to override the derivation; it sounds wholly like themselves. "Absolute Affirmation" and "Transmission" both house tremendous central guitar-based hooks, while "FRA Type I & II" pumps up the bassline to unveil a healthy dub influence and "Shake the Foundation" throbs along at a post-modern funk/disco tempo. Lyrically, the band are still about political sloganeering and anthemic calls to action, but are thankfully never heavy enough to distract from the rhythms. In fact, the gloss, the beat, the good times -- all of these things seem to anticipate a resurgence of late 80s values (the INXS comparisons are really quite appropriate) that will come back into vogue as soon as the kids today get just a little bit older, and if they play their cards right, Radio 4 may just ride the crest of that wave all the way to the top.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing?.......2004-09-08

"Sometimes all the blame for a disaster can be traced to a simple bad decision. In the case of Radio Four and their album Stealing a Nation that crucial moment was when they hired Max Heyes to produce the record. Maybe it was record company pressure, maybe it was the band's own choice but however it came down, the result is the same. Stealing of a Nation is a slick, calculated record that misses its target on all accounts. It aims to be a big statement, a political treatise detailing how corrupt and wrong "the system is" set to incendiary rhythms meant to get people boogying while they tear down the walls of injustice. Fair enough, it is good to have ambition. Unfortunately the smoothed out sound of the disc and bland, lifeless tunes won't do much to inspire people. If you want devotion you have to throw in some tunes that people can sing along to. Ask Billy Bragg. Ask the Clash. And if they aren't singing along at least get them out on the dance floor like !!! does on Louden Up Now. The worst thing you can do is inspire yawns as Radio 4 have done here. Perhaps they should have retained the services of the DFA again as producers and created an album as exciting, raw and alive as Gotham. Instead Heyes (who has worked with Ocean Colour Scene and Doves to give you some idea where he is coming from) loads the sound up with lots of modern bells and whistles like techno sequencers, guitar effects and keyboard doodles but in the process pretty much ruins everything. The guitars sound distant and processed, the drums and bass aren't heavy enough to inspire much dance floor action, the vocals are way out in front of the music (which considering the mostly pedestrian and empty lyrics does no one any favors) and most mystifyingly, every song seems to have the same rat-a-tat-tat conga line that the Clash used in "This is Radio Clash". Overall it sounds less like the work of a band getting together and coming up with a sound or a direction than it does the result of a computer program cooked up to replicate the current newest wave of new wave sounds. Not that computers are necessarily bad, it is just that Radio 4 made such a great record without relying on them so heavily, one wishes they had gone for a similar approach here. As it is songs like " (Give Me All Your) Money" and "State of Alert" call to mind the era of Jesus Jones and EMF, "Dismiss the Sound" sounds like Depeche Mode in their hard rocking days, at other times you get traces of INXS or Alabama 3. These are all names you have to be sure Radio 4 were not aiming to be linked to but again it is about choices. You can stay true to yourself and your sound and maybe make a good record or you can aim for the big time and take the risk of making a record that leaves behind all the things that made you great. Having said all that there are some flashes of excitement here and there; "Absolute Affirmation" has an organic Ted Leo meets New Order feel, "State of Alert" has a hook that sticks with you for awhile and "Nation" has some spiffy dub effects. That's not a lot to hang your hat on however, their track record surely led fans to expect more. To paraphrase Beach Boy Carl Wilson speaking about his band's Smiley Smile album, The Stealing of a Nation is a foul ball when we were hoping for a home run." - Tim Sendra - AllMusicGuide

4 out of 5 stars Dazzling but unsophisticated.......2007-03-08

When this CD was released, Chris Thile was blowing away mandolinists with his amazing virtuosity. Breathlessly fast cross-picking coupled with fluid shifts up and down the fretboard made for some stunning moments that left other mandolinists gasping. Some of this is captured on this CD. However I would bet that a recording of a live performance at this time would capture a lot more. Even so, the inventiveness and effortless skill seem present on any track. Only a track featuring his guitar playing fails to move. The only quibbles are that the songs are not all that great. Additionally, while there is a lot of talent on display, it does not seem yet harnassed to a real purpose. But his youthful willingness to dazzle shines through on a CD which is perhaps more straightforward bluegrass than listeners of later Nickel Creek may be ready for. This is an all instrumental CD. The supporting cast is made of bluegrass festival favorites like Peter Wernick on banjo. A nice choice for those interested in bluegrass and the outer reaches of mandolin wizardry.

5 out of 5 stars Early Chris Thile Shows You What Is To Become...........2006-03-15

This album gives new meaning to the term "child star." Mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile, who is one of the most creative talents in everything from Bluegrass to Newgrass to alternative music, recorded this set of original tunes (yep, he wrote 'em!) when he was but a wee teen. What a talent he was even then! Any Thile fans (or any mandolin enthusiasts for that matter) will want to hear this album, with its catchy tunes that point so clearly at where this star was headed. The only missing piece: No Chris singing, as we have on The Little Cowpoke album from his childhood. Must have been that his voice was changing. Thoroughly enjoyable!

5 out of 5 stars Thile Wows Early.......2006-02-28

Chris Thile explodes in a shower of virtuosity at an exceedingly young age. It was obvious that Chris possessed major talent even as a pudgy-faced little fellow. As he grows and adds to his legacy, this early effort will remain a flat-out fiery demonstration that he could burn as a babe.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2005-12-05

I'm not that into bluegrass. This recording transcends the genre and can appeal to music-lovers of any stripe.

The tune "Stealing Second" is genuine brilliance. It alone justified the price of the CD. perfect.

5 out of 5 stars America's Mandolin Mozart Mesmerizes.......2005-11-22

A little historical perspective. Chris had won the national mandolin championship at 12, followed by the recording "Leading Off". "Stealing Second" was recorded at about age 17, very soon before the earth-shaking "Nickel Creek" debut CD.

On his first CD, "Leading Off", Chris worked with fine musicians and allowed himself to be mentored a little by Pete Wernick, mixing a few self-written ditties with several "parking lot favorites". On "Stealing Second" everything gets ratcheted up a notch. Chris writes ALL the tunes himself. The accompanying musicians are no less than Stuart Duncan on Fiddle and Jerry Douglas on Dobro. Now master David Grier takes on guitar work and Scott Vestal brings his 5-string wizardry to the project.

The results are, frankly, electrifying. Chris mixes in light, airy reels like "Ah, Spring" and "Hop the Fence" with serious barn-burning breakdowns like "Clear the Tracks". (One of the "hottest" bluegrass recordings in history.)

For anyone with any interest in Chris Thile, Bluegrass, Irish or Mandolin music, "Stealing Second" is required listening. Get it.

Seems a lot of folks find Golijov shallow and it's easy to qualify. One example: he goes to that ululated falling second degree business so often when he wants pathos that it becomes a cliche. That's calculation.
On the other hand, accusations of phoniness and pretension can hardly be qualified. It's just name-calling, like right-wing talk radio.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting sampler.......2006-06-13

This cd offers a snapshot of the downtown New York classical scene of the early 90s, played by one of the great new music chamber groups, the Bang on a Can All-Stars.
I find the preceding comment about "phoniness" suspect in that such accusations have little to do with the music at hand, but rather are borne of some personal resentment. It says nothing. What exactly is it that you find phony? What do you think genuine is?

I bought this CD-single when it was new and after 15 years it's still one of the best CD-singles in my personal library. 'Been Caught Stealing' is one of those now-classic tracks from that whole late-80s/early-90s underground/alternative/college-rock scene that was so cool and thrived supreme until grunge downgraded the 90s into a sloppy, high-school-brat-infested ennui-driven pity party.

I actually prefer the 12'' Remix Version over the Album Version of 'Been Caught Stealing' and the Demo Version of 'Had A Dad' (produced by Perry Farrell and Ethan James at Radio Tokyo in 1986) is a stunning bonus too.

At the time of writing I see several copies of this selling in used but mint condition for between 1 and 5 cents. What are you waiting for? :)
