Album Description

The masters of Symphonic Power Metal are back!

Symphony X are recognized by-and-large as one the most important acts in the worldwide metal scene. After the release of their hugely successful CD, The Odyssey - and after nearly five years - Michael Romeo and his band have returned with what is already being praised as their best work to date. Paradise Lost has all the trademarks that have come to be associated with Symphony X: Incredibly intricate and powerful, yet-melodic compositions that showcase every member's unrivaled technical skill as instrumentalists. However, once again it must be said that the spotlight is squarely on the ferocious vocal force of singer Russell Allen and the almost inhuman pyrotechnics of guitarist Michael Romeo.

The North American version of Paradise Lost features a fantastic foldout and diecut digipack that was designed by Warren Flanagan, who has done art-direction for major motion picture blockbusters such as I Robot, X-Men and Blade.

This is thee guitar release of the summer!

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Symphony X Has Their Masterpiece.......2007-07-29

Russel Allen is without a doubt one of the most powerful singers of our times, and Michael Romeo is pure genius in how he has crafted this album and he slays on his guitar! Every song is great and their sound is more powerful than ever before. They are the best progressive metal act today and now officially blow Dream Theater away....
For more Powerful Great Progressive Metal check these guys out too, the rule! I saw them at the Bay Area Rockfest in San Francisco and they ripped!World Full of Grey

5 out of 5 stars Symphony X Does It Again!.......2007-07-29

It's a great CD. Any Symphony X fan who hasn't picked it up yet should. And kudos to Amazon. When I first received it in the mail, opened the fancy jewel case and no CD was in there! I called customer service and they quickly shipped me another one at no cost to me.

5 out of 5 stars DAMn!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-28

Well worth the wait, they pulled it off again! If you are thinking about buying this album just listen to 'eve of the seduction' and then decide.

5 out of 5 stars Good & Evil.......2007-07-28

ABSOLUTELY is the best Prograssive album in 2007!
Symphony-X the band that alwayz comes with the best!

BUY THIS ALBUM.... U WONT FEEL SORRY FOR IT

5 out of 5 stars Russell Allen Truly Shines Here.......2007-07-26

It is not hyperbole to declare that 'Paradise Lost' was worth the five-year wait, and nearly a month since I purchased it remains in heavy rotatation on my MP3 player. Few bands have the kind of staying power that allows them to take that amount of time off and still be relevant, or have as loyal a fan base. Then again, Symphony X has always appealed to literary maven in me, from V: The New Mythology Suite, (based on the myth of Atlantis) to The Odyssey (Homer would have loved these guys), and I've adored them not only for making great albums, but for treating the listeners like intelligent human beings.

This is NOT a remake of 'The Odyssey', so don't expect it. 'Paradise Lost' is darker, richer and deeper in tone and texture, including the artwork (which is worth the price alone). From the sweeping 'Oculus Ex Inferni', which opens this grand epic depicting Lucifer's rebellion against God, to the blistering 'Set the World On Fire/The Lie of Lies', to the heartrending Revelation (Divus Ex Pennae Tragoedia), it's cinema of the mind done through music, and what music it is. I do believe that John Milton would indeed be proud.

It seems that most of the reviewers are budding guitar gods, which is why they focus on the almost inhuman stylings of Michael Romeo (and believe me, they ARE simply jaw-dropping--does the guy have extra fingers on his hands?), I'm all about vocals and personally, it's Russell Allen's intense vocals that really stand out here and showcases his incredible range. For some fans, the heaviness Allen uses here may be somewhat disconcerting, but for the overall theme of the album, it's perfect. While we're not talking unintelligible death-metal growls, it is a much darker and harsher sound. However, Russell Allen is the ultimate actor, managing to convey the seductive evil of ultimate power. He's both wicked and alluring as he snarls with fiendish venom: "I will forsake you/destroy and unmake you/with all my might/I will take you down..." His delivery reminds me of Jon Oliva's Mephisto from 'Beethoven's Last Night'. Of course, Allen does go softer on such tracks as `Paradise Lost' (my other favourite) and `Revelation' (I love the ending which incorporated melodic lines from Divine Wings of Tragedy--it's a trope that I've noticed most progressive/power metal bands seem to use).

There's nothing else to say except that I truly LOVE this album and can't wait to see them live. This is American Power Metal at its finest!

If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of "The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars New to Sarah Brightman.......2007-03-12

I'm very new to Sarah brightman's music and I enjoy this CD. I think she has an amazing voice. Very talented young woman and this cd was very relaxing and joyful to listen to. I like to learn and heard more from Sarah Brightman.

3 out of 5 stars Stranger in Paradise - More Like Stranger in a Lost Cause.......2006-12-30

I'm not throughly pleased with this album! This CD is only good if you know how to dance in a Middle-Easters fashion. About half of each track is dominated by all orchestrations and no Sarah. Plus, Pop-Sarah isn't really for me. I much prefer the Classical-Sarah. Some of the tracks are okay, like "Harem", "The Journey Home", "Beautiful", and "Stranger in Paradise". Really, this is a good CD for your collection, but I wouldn't listen to it on a 24/7 basis.

5 out of 5 stars No voice like hers in the world.......2006-10-01

I own this cd. I saw her in person at the "Harem" concert. Never had I heard or seen any voice like this. What a performer, best concert I'd ever seen. Beautiful voice, I can never get enough of Sarah Brightman's music. It is so comforting at times. I have all her music and this cd makes you wonder, how can she top this? Thank you Sarah Brightman for giving us your beautiful gift of music.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Brightman, Her best CD........2006-09-18

Sarah is just the best, she can hit any note and her individuality shines on this CD. She sings "The Journey Home" from the musical Bombay Dreams and her voice just soars. "Harem", "Mysterious Ways" and "You Take My Breah Away" are songs that take me to dreamland. Amazing! A master piece!

I also purchased this CD based on the reviews and I'm truly glad that I did. This is Mehdi at his best. I've only listened to it a a few times since I received it, but I know I'll be playing it often. It's especially nice in the car, because it brings the surrounding natural scenery to life. Recommended !

I wouldn't not recommend it, but I wouldn' rave over it either.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Nirvana - Where sound quality, artistry and composition come together........2007-06-25

Power up the stereo. Turn the lights down low. Don the headphones and energize the CD player. Relax. It's time to enter a world of virtuoso musicianship, of soundscapes that take you to another world. Close your eyes and listen. You're no longer alone but surrounded by beauty and floating into Paradise. You move seamlessly between this world and the next, the music weaving a tapestry that transcends the distance and the times.

Mehdi's Instrumental Paradise is a special recording in that it captures the soul and essence of one of the great musical visionaries in our time.

Mehdi has been playing the piano since he could reach the keys and has composed music for many feature films prior to embarking on his Instrumental musical journey in the mid-90's. Mehdi's music (a mixture of Middle Eastern, Celtic, Greek, Southern European and Spanish or at times Moorish set to neo classical and more modern influences) defies the current practice of cataloging each artist into a standard category. Above all else, this is music for the adventurer in each of us.

Mehdi is the feature artist showcasing his wide-ranging Piano and mesmerizing original compositions. But this is by no means a one-person show. Flutist Dan Jenks, Violinist Tony Ragetti, Percussionist Yoshi Masayuki,Cellist Jesse Von Unwerth,Persian Oudist John Bilezikjian,Guitarist Michael Barbieri,Sitarist Daniel J Gupta are just a few of the virtuoso musicians on this master piece.
They add their tremendous musical talents to a recording that truly is more than the sum of its individual parts. Each of these musicians are talented masters in their own right and have recorded with Mehdi as well as other respected and diverse musicians ranging from Loreena Mckinnett to Yanni.

The sound quality of this recording is beyond reproach. The dynamics and spatial imaging of the recording deserve special mention. This truly is a recording without fault: Over 59 minutes of timeless excellence in sound.

Mehdi's spirituality seems to be as little understood as his music. He is a musical and spiritual adventurer. Each recording contains compositions that deal with a wide range of influences ranging from Christianity to Mysticism to Islam and other faiths. One should be careful in not labeling his beliefs as well as his music. Just listen, learn and enjoy.

If you enjoy artists such as Secret Garden, Loreena Mckinnett,Enya, David Lanz, Phil Coulter, Yanni, classical, Celtic and other world music, or if you are intrigued by a musical adventure, Mehdi's extraordinary Instrumentals should be on your short list of future musical purchases.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous sound !.......2007-06-25

A DJ here in Austin insists on calling Mehdi, "The Jewel of public television." While many of his fans are probably jealous that there's actually a station here that gives him airtime (KGSR, 107.1 -- a near identical twin of KBCO Boulder, 97.3), I've patiently combed public TV listings for months, and never seen his name once. Woe is me!

Ever since some cognoscenti used a snippet of his "Wedding Song" as background on an episode of "Northern Exposure," I've been hooked on Mehdi's compelling blend of inspiring melodies and middle eastern rhythms. The California Native and his bandmates are wizards with their instruments. Volume 8 Instrumental Paradise is a must for any fan of Mehdi's music; and I can think of no better way for someone unfamiliar with his sound to become acquainted.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars At The Movies by Andre Rieu.......2007-05-20

Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music. Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".

4 out of 5 stars very beautiful.......2007-01-09

This cd is very beautiful. It captures the songs wonderfully. The orchestra does a fine job.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing Music.......2006-11-03

Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.

5 out of 5 stars from texas--AND FROM A MUSIC LOVER.......2006-08-30

ANDRE RIEU TAKES US ON A WONDERFUL TRIP BACK IN TIME TO THE MOVIES YOU CAN=T FORGET AND THE MUSIC THAT MADE THEM CLASSICS. DO BUY IT. IT IS A TREASURE...

4 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu - Music for the masses.......2006-08-10

Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

One album before Styx cut loose with an honest-to-goodness concept album, Kilroy Was Here, they flirted with the idea on Paradise Theater. The concept here has something to do with the decline of America in the '70s, based on the condemnation and destruction of the Paradise Theater, a famous showplace in the band's hometown of Chicago. Truth be told, the concept hasn't held together that well, though the individual songs have, led by the optimistic ballad "The Best of Times," and the rockers "Too Much Time on My Hands" and "Snowblind." Dennis DeYoung gives some of his most theatrical performances throughout, presaging his overly ambitious Kilroy concept, but also his successful run performing in the legitimate theater, as Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar. Paradise, meanwhile, was about as good as it got for Styx. --Daniel Durchholz

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Number 10.......2007-06-29

After the disappointing 'Cornerstone' I was a little nervous about buying this. Didn't want to be let down. But, to my surprise, a very solid release. Almost a concept album of sorts with a common theme of the Paradise Theater. Once again, DeYoung delivers his radio friendly 'The Best of Times', but also delivers the rocking 'Rockin' the Paradise'. Two songs basically the same musically, just a little twist thrown in on the styling. Shaw gives us 'Too Much Time on My Hands', still playing on top 40 today. The only song that never really fit into the album and maybe could be considered filler would be Shaw's 'She Cares'. As much as he would say about DeYoung's songs later on this was a pretty sappy song from him. At least today on cd you can just skip it or just not include it in your mix. But then again, maybe you're one of the fans that likes it. Your choice, but a great album to hear especially after their last.

4 out of 5 stars A Return to Glory.......2006-10-19

Styx returned to a harder style with this album, a style that seemed to vanish on 1979's Cornerstone. While they didn't rock as hard as they had on "Pieces of Eight", fans nonetheless embraced this album, thanks to songs like "Rockin' The Paradise" and "Snowblind". Newer fans of the band were also happy with "The Best of Times" and "Too Much Time On My Hands". This is probably the most polished album of Styx's career; for older fans this was probably their biggest complaint with the album. The blend of styles worked well for them here, but this would be the last album that would prove satisfying to what had become a large legion of fans.

5 out of 5 stars Great Great Great.......2006-10-14

This album is another great one in a long line of great Styx albums. Dennis DeYoung is such a huge part of the success of Styx. Every song here is a winner.
Rockin' The Paradise really gets it rocking. Too Much Time On My Hands is a Styx classic. All the way through this album shows how awesome Styx was. This is a must have for any Styx or classic rock fan.

5 out of 5 stars BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT!.......2006-09-02

Styx Flirted With The Idea Of A Concept Album On This Piece Of Art. The Album Is About A Theatre Known As The Paradise That Is Built To Last Forever But Is Eventually Torn Down Due To Lack Of Interest. It Symbolizes The Decline Of Morals In The United States. Sad But True. If You Know Your Rock And Roll History You Very Well Know That When Styx Went On Tour For This Album They Set A World Record For The Highest Grossing Tour By One Band.

Anyway About The Album. You Can Kind Of Tell This Is About A Theatre Because Almost Every Song I Wouldn't Mind Seeing Or Hearing on Broadway. This Album Holds A Lot Of Great Styx Songs Like "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Snowblind", "The Best Of Times", And The Famous Two-Parter "A.D. 1928" And "Rockin' The Paradise". Paradise Theatre Also Checks In With The Rocker "Half-Penny, Two-Penny" And Shaw's Ballad "She Cares". And If You've Seen Styx's Return To Paradise" DVD Or Heard The CD You Know What They Did. I Loved How They Closed Out The Concert With "The Best Of Times" Combined With "A.D. 1958" To Finish Off The Cocert. I Thought That Was A Particular Nice Touch By Them.

This Is A Great Styx Album And One Of Their Best. These Guys Are One Of The Greatest Bands Of All-Time In Any One's Opinion. The Best Band (In My Opinion) Of All-Time.

This Is A Must Have Album. If You Love Music As Much As I Do You Must Have This Album In Your Collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great era for music.......2006-03-15

Styx was at the top of their game in this album, and it's definitely a RECORD that make syou longn for the days when there actually were nice big record albums and big album covers and sleeves that the artists put a lot of thought into the design for. Beautiful lead singing voice, beautiful music and a very beautiful album design! I like my CDs like anybody else, but this is an era of rock we can't forget.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Think of Ry Cooder as a musicologist who makes learning fun. A particularly nifty collection from 1974, Paradise & Lunch is solo Cooder at his best. The song selection is inspired and unpredictable: numbers by Burt Bacharach, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and Bobby Womack commingle with ease. "Tattler" is a rare Ry original that happens to be one of the collection's highlights. Jazz legend Earl Hines guests on the dapper "Ditty Wa Ditty." --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Great disc.......2007-05-25

I didnt think I was going to like this as much as I did, but whadayaknow, it didnt leave my CD player in my car for like 3 days. This dude can play geetar. At first I wasnt sure about his voice, but then I woke up and realized he's pretty good. And man, he gets down with the guitar on a few songs. Really cool, interesting music for people that like music, and not stuff like Tim McGraw.

5 out of 5 stars Bluesy Americana doesn't get any better than this.......2007-03-28

Back in my college days in the early 70's I remember this album being voted as Album of the Year by (it seems like) Rolling Stone or Stereophile Magazine - I can't quite remember which. And so I bought it not knowing anything at all about Ry Cooder.

I tend towards music where the rhythms are strong and catchy as they are in early Soul/R&B music. If it isn't a good song in the first place, I don't care how good the instrumentation or the singing are performed. It just won't stand up.

Well, I go back to this album often and I agree with one of the other reviewers in the observation that the songs chosen here are a little eclectic in mix, but they all have that certain flannel shirt and blue jeans Blues funk character to them. The tone on Cooder's bottleneck slide guitar fits them perfectly as does his voice. His playing is stunning on most of the cuts.

The other thing I seem to detect in the choice of songs is a sense of humor. I'm not a big lyrics guy but The Tattler and Married Man's A Fool put a smile on my face every time I hear 'em.

As with several of the other reviewers, this one's in my Top Ten All Time Albums easy...

5 out of 5 stars Rich, Lyrical, Complex Blues.......2007-03-24

Ry Cooder is one of the most misunderstood recording artists of his generation. Too often critics treat him as some kind of rarified musical archivist or historian when he is really a very sophisticated arranger and an unparalled soloist. Simply put, "Paradise and Lunch" contains some of the richest and most lyrical guitar playing you'll find in any genre. By incorporating the instrument's complex blues legacy into his arrangements and playing, he creates an intimate and expressive album out of a very diverse set of songs. His "Mexican Divorce" may be the most subtle and emotionally charged version of a Bacharach/David song ever recorded. I've owned this album on vinyl for a quarter century and it sounds better each time I hear it.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings.......2007-02-12

Saw Ry Cooder on the PBS station with Buena Vista Social Club, bought this album expecting something I didn't get. It's ok, I guess I just don't get Ry Cooder

5 out of 5 stars One Of His Best.......2007-02-02

3 out of 5 stars a bit disappointed.......2007-03-22

I ordered this item based on the gushing reviews of other consumers. While the title track really kicks, the rest of it is insipid and bland. I would have given less than 3 were it not for that track. To make matters worse, I found that piece of music in an anthology of inspirational music. My advice is save your money and look for the one great piece elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music.......2007-03-13

This music gives me goose bumps every time I listen to it. Relaxing and invigorating at the same time!

4 out of 5 stars Capturing The True Qualities Of The Movie.......2007-03-04

Vangelis has composed numerous movie soundtracks - the most famous may be Chariots of Fire - and has forged a solid career as a solo artist & working with artists like vocalist Jon Anderson.

In an era - started back in the day with FM - when soundtracks may not have anything to do with movie, Vangelis tells a story with each song in a motion picture that was only controversial when released because it tells the real story of Christopher Columbus and the opening gambit of the European holocaust of native populations in North & South America, the Caribbean and Africa.

The haunting chords of Opening leads to the chilling Conquest of Paradise, which has the propogandistic goose-step of any military song in Nazi Germany or Stalin's Soviet Union. The atmospheric Monastery of La Rabida and the epic quality of Light and Shadow are equally strong tracks.

The listener is gazing across a ship's bow in West Across the Ocean and there is an ethereal element in Eternity. There are harsh, hypnotic and avant-garde qualities within Hispanola & Moxica and the Horse.

To get a full appreciation of the music it would be beneficial to watch the movie. And isn't that what a soundtrack is supposed to be about?

5 out of 5 stars Better Than Most.......2007-01-12

While I generally steer clear of movie sound tracks, "The Conquest of Paradise" is an exception. This is serious music that can stand on its own two feet. I was on a four-masted clipper cruise this September and the Captain played the main theme every time the sails were hoisted. Thrilling!

5 out of 5 stars Great music!!!!!!.......2007-01-11

This CD is awesome. I do not think there is a song on it that disappointed me. Every single track was incredible. It has prompted me to watch the movie. It was that good!

4 out of 5 stars You know, they didn't actually go away.......2007-07-07

I've noticed in various metal publications (as well as the reviews here) that Paradise Lost's 2007 album In Requiem is being hailed as a "return to form" and the band's best album since 1995's Draconian Times. What exactly did the band have to "return" from? I suppose Host and Believe in Nothing could be considered below Paradise Lost's usual high standards, but One Second, Symbol of Life and Paradise Lost were all fantastic albums. In Requiem is simply the logical extension of those recent works.

I will grant that In Requiem seems like a tighter, more focused album than its predecessors. The band seems far more interested in writing good metal songs than in coming up with dance beats, which is fine by me. Once again, Paradise Lost demonstrates why no one can touch them when it comes to balancing a dark atmosphere and subject matter with completely irresistible melodies (see for example, songs like Enemy and Beneath Black Skies). There isn't a lot of experimentation, nor are there any Dead Can Dance or Smiths covers this time around. Of course, I tend to think that Paradise Lost can do whatever they want at this point, considering the fact that they pretty much invented the whole gothic metal genre.

So yeah, it's a really solid album. I just think that most of the praise it is receiving could just as easily have been heaped upon either of the band's previous albums. I do think that the cover artwork for In Requiem is one of the best, if not the best, of the band's album covers to date.

4 out of 5 stars Paradise Lost has been rediscovered!.......2007-06-25

I agree with the comments from the previous review. This CD is really good. Paradise Lost is back in top form with this release and it's about time; the last album that I really liked was Draconian Times, and that was over 10 years ago! I had bought a few other post Draconian Times albums and was sorely disappointed. I had just about forgotten about Paradise Lost when I decided to risk buying this and I am not disappointed. This is what they should have done years ago, but better late then never!

5 out of 5 stars Very heavy & melodic.......2007-06-19

I've been a Paradise Lost fan since Draconian Times. I think this is their best effort in years and might even be my favorite album from them. It's on constant rotation on my MP3 player. Notable tracks are "Never for the Damned", "The Enemy" and "Praise Lamented Shade" which is a very dark and churning song. Very passionate vocals and melodies. This is a great release from a great band.

4 out of 5 stars phantom of the paradise.......2007-06-14

i ordered this cd as a gift to my pal who's way older than me. she went berserk when i showed it to her and played it all day, all night. i guess she has had a very fond memory with these particular songs. and i think they are nice as well, even if this album is more than 20 years old (is it?) it still sounds very modern, an interesting mix of musical, progressive rock and pop.

4 out of 5 stars A classic of its kind.......2007-06-14

I've never heard anything else by Paul Williams but this soundtrack to the cult movie stands on its own as a remarkable testament to love gone awry. It follows the story of a man willing to sell his soul for one more chance, a tale of beauty and the beast and Faust and the devil, brilliantly scored and cheesily acted. All the music and lyrics were penned by Williams. My favorite line is the chorus from "The Hell Of It": Good for nothing / Bad in bed / Nobody likes you / You're better off dead / Goodbye Goodbye. Nice and depressingly loving. It also deals with the idea of stolen music (Celine Dion).

4 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS!!.......2007-06-03

This is one of my all time favorite movies, and one of my all time favorite movie soundtracks.Paul Williams is at the top of his game as a songwriter here. The lyrics to these songs actually made me forget that he was responsible for 'Evergreen'.and Jessica Harper has a voice that is incredibly haunting and lovely.'Old Souls' gives me chills every time I hear it.

5 out of 5 stars UN CLASICO..........2007-05-20
