4 out of 5 stars Great Album, But Lif Can Do Better.......2006-10-09

Mr. Lif might just be my favorite rapper in the game right now. There aren't many, if any, MCs with lyrics as thought provoking or as geniunely interesting as Mr. Lif. His EP 'Emergency Rations' and first LP 'I Phantom' are both easily 9-10/10 albums, which obviously creates very high expectations for any Lif release. While 'Mo'Mega' is a great album, and would be considered an extraordinary release from most other artists, it doesn't succeed in improving upon, or matching, Lif's prior albums.

The production on 'Mo'Mega' is largely handled by Def Jux founder El-P, who has also provided a good amount of production for Lif in the past. El-P's production style is pretty unorthodox, and many hip hop fans find his production just too "out there". While his production here is a bit more "normal" than what you might expect from him, people who aren't fans of El-Producto might be turned off by the production here. The 3 tracks that aren't produced by El-P have somewhat more conventional production, and they're handled by Edan (Murs Iz My Manager), Nick Toth (For You) and Mr. Lif himself (Washtup!). Overall, I feel that the production is great, although not as good as the production on Lif's past material.

Lyrically, Lif excells as always. Subject matter is great, flow is on point, and Lif executes extremely well. But once again, as shown by past material, Lif can do better. On I Phantom, for example, Lif showed his storytelling ability as well as numerous concept songs (considering it was a concept album). Lif strays away from storytelling and concept songs on 'Mo'Mega', which is pretty disapointing considering how great they were on I Phantom.

Overall, this really is a great album, and by far one of the best of 2006. But if you're a Lif fan lookings for another 'I Phantom', you might be disapointed on the first listen. But it definately grows on you.

Top 5 Songs (In Order):

1. Murs Iz My Manager (Featuring Murs) - Murs (another one of my favorite rappers) and Lif show great chemistry on this track, going back and forth over maybe the best beat on the album.

2. Brothaz - Sounds like a track straight off of 'Emergency Rations'; politically charged, and extremely dope.

3. For You - Great beat provided by Nick Toth (never heard of him before), and shows a more personal side of Lif (along with 'Looking In...') that was rarely seen on prior albums.

4. The Fries - 2 dope beats from El-P, accompanied with social commentary on fast food and other topics make this a definate standout.

5. Take, Hold, Fire (Featuring Aesop Rock & El-P) - Great overall track featuring 2 nice verses from labelmates Aesop Rock & El-P.

Worst Track:

Long Distance - Not a bad track, but not as good lyrically, nor beat-wise as the rest of the album. Just overall the least enjoyable track.

Lyrics/Substance/Subject Matter - 9/10
Flow/Delivery - 8.5/10
Production - 8/10
Overall Feel - 8/10

Guest Apperances - Aesop Rock, El-P, Murs, Akrobatik & Blueprint - 9.5/10 - Every one of the guests makes a memorable apperance. Definately a high point of the album.
Overall Rating - 8.5/10 - Pick this up if youre a fan of political hip hop that makes you think...but if you haven't heard any Mr. Lif before, you might want to pick up 'Emergency Rations' or 'I Phantom' first.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrically Incredible.......2006-08-05

Mr Lif is a genius, i love this cd, it is so much better than the stuff you hear on the radio these days, i hope people continue to support him, he is very much deserving of his accomplishments. I reccommend adding this cd to anyones collection, you will be amazed.

5 out of 5 stars Lif is a Genius.......2006-08-05

This Album is summed up when I state that Mr. Lif is a "genius" Not only is this album worth getting, but its worth keeping in your Cd-player for weeks.

One thing to be aware of is that the CD does not have an immediate appeal like "Emergency Rations" does. Tracks like "Murs is my manager" will but all else will take time. Eventually after listening to the lyrics and adapting to Lif's classic yet newer style portrayed, the music will engulf you.

Songs that are personally my favorite (even though I pretty much like them all) are "Brothas," "Fries," "For You," "Murs is my Manager," "Looking in," and my recent favorite has been "Mo Mega." Not only does Lif shine, Blueprint and Akrobatik are at the top of their game. Buy this album and support a true lyrical genius.

5 out of 5 stars Best thing out of Boston since Black Dialogue.......2006-07-23

This is my favorite Lif album thus far. There are a lot of reasons. First off this is the best production I've heard by El-P, which is saying a lot considering I have a large Def Jux collection. The only thing I don't like about the beats is that occasionaly Lif's voice will just blend right in, and you will get caught up in the beat and completely miss the lyrics. The lyrics are what make Lif great. He's intelligent, politically-savvy, but most of all he does it without sounding boring or overly angry at the president. Songs like "The Fries" are what make this album my favorite by Lif. He can raise a very good point while also making the song laughable. There's nothing really bad to say about this album, I like his choice in collaborations, choosing old Perceptionist Akrobatik and fellow Jukies Aes Rock and Murs on his three (ft.) songs. The best track on the CD is probably Take! Hold! Fire!, and it's not just for Aes, the lyrics in this song are killer, and if you have any bass where you're listenin you'll be feelin it too. It's ill. Whole CD is ill. Five mics.

3 out of 5 stars Not all I was hoping for...3.5 stars.......2006-07-06

First off, I must give props to El-P for the extremely fresh and addictive production. The beats are definitely a vast improvement, if not a nice progression from Lif's earlier efforts. Lyrically, Lif does not deliver to his fullest potential. Inside we hear a much different Lif than the one we all know from 2002's "I Phantom". His flow sounds too hard, in a uncomfortable sort of way. His lyrics seem far less personal and withdrawn. His relentless attacks against the Bush administration and others sound preachy for the first time ever. Lif has always delivered solutions and intelligent commentary to his attacks that always brought his message full circle. It rather pains me to hear him complain and not offer solutions or reason for his opinions. He sounds more negative than ever on his protest tracks, which frankly clouds the messages. I just don't feel the passion like I did in his last 3 records. However, there are some classics in the mix that defy the rule.

My favorite track and message on the record is somewhat of a comedy sketch - "Murs Iz My Manager" (featuring Murs from the Living Legends crew). Murs tries to guide Lif to fame as they discuss how much work it takes to promote yourself and be known in this industry. "Brothaz" is also a favorite. Lif sounds hungry on this track, and El-P spruces it up with a massive heart thumping beat. "Take, Hold, Fire" featuring dope verses by Aesop Rock and El-P remains a favorite. They all perform well under El-P's sick soundscape. The semi-comical "Washtup" and "Long Distance" are probably two of the worst tracks I've yet heard from Lif. I never thought he would delve into such played out repetitive topics as telling your girl to wash "it" up, and a story of a long distance relationship while on tour (beating a dead horse anyone?). The title track finds Akrobatik kicking a sweet verse along with Lif, with Blueprint falling somewhat short. "For You" is a nice personal tribute to his child...a beautiful closer.

Sadly, a lyricist can make or break and album. I'm not saying Lif has lost his touch, as this is a fine record when comparing it to the competition. But if you are a first-timer, I cannot recommend this as your first purchase. Pick up "I Phantom" or "Emergency Rations" first. If you are in my shoes, and you're just starving to hear a new Lif record, by all means buy it! Just don't expect anything revolutionary.

Mix Alpha Classic Funk with a little 'word' and you get an mildly entertaining CD.

3 out of 5 stars This was not as good as i was hoping, But it's kind of appealing.......2006-05-25

This album was nowhere near as good as ''The last street preacha'', But i enjoyed this album somewhat in spite of the fact that there's some weak songs on here and there's also a few too many skits and interludes on here as well. T-bone still shines lyrically on most of the tracks on here, Especially when he rhymes alongside Krs-one on ''Gospel alpha mega funky boogie disco music''. The highlights of the album are ''Rhyme skillz'' [Best song on the album], ''Still preachin'', ''Gospel alpha mega funky boogie disco music'', and ''Our history'' [A brilliant song where T-bone discusses some of the earlier days of the christian rap industry]. While this album fails to grab my attention the way street preacha did, I still find myself popping this cd into my cd player to hear a few of the songs on this cd. If you're a T-bone fan, I guess this is an alright listen, But for a better T-bone cd, Buy ''The last street preacha''. Hope the review helped. Be blessed.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet CD.......2005-03-16

This is a great CD! T-Bone has done it again, after many previous albums as well. Although he is not as mainstream as most artists, he deserves to be. This christian rapper has a lot of talent, so go ahead and guy this album. You won't be disappointed!

3 out of 5 stars Why BITE?.......2005-01-12

Having followed T-Bone's career from Redeemed Hoodlum to GospelAlphaMegaFunkyBoogieDiscoMusic...I have to give him his propers for tight production and flows for the most part. However, what really weighs on this release, and on his first releases, is his tendency to mimic, rather outright BITE concepts and lyrics from secular hip hop artists. For instance, on Redeemed Hoodlum and Hoodlum's Testimony he's doin' Cypress Hill, on Hoodlum's prayer he's doin' a lil 2Pac & Method Man, on Last Street Preacha he's doin' his own thang, but on GAMFBDMusic, he's bitin' Snoop from start to finish. Now I love my brother-in-Christ all the way, and I acknowledge the fact that he's one of holy hip hop's pioneers and one of it's hottest lyricists...however, it's because he's so unique and so skilled that I have to come down on him a lil for goin' Christian Snoop on e'rybody. Another sure shot for the speakers, and funky out this world, but his most original works to date are on The Last Street Preacha and even on the one joint he did for the Hero:The Rock Opera soundtrack(Raised In Harlem). 5 out of 5 stars Sick album all around.......2006-07-31

Sick from start to finish... Beats are insane , bars are insane , entire thing is just simply insane. The fact that after everything these dudes went thru , they can still drop albums goes to show. One thing people gotta understand is that when B.I.G was alive , he wasn't messin with all those people who call him out these days , he was messin with mafia and Lil Cease. B.I.G wanted to retire so he could deal with these dudes full time and you can tell with this album. I also like the way they address the entire thing with Lil Kim and snitching , because like they say , she didn't do anything. She perjered her self , they had phones tapped , people had to goto court and talk , after telling her to take the charge and she didnt wanna do it...

One of the best albums of last year , hands down. 151 out of 10.

1 out of 5 stars people should riot about this album!!!!!.......2006-02-01

this album is junk, a waste of some good beats, but the song i hate the most is'' just us'', they come out in pics front covers tryin to convince us of buying an album cuz how the way they look. jm, listen to me,2pac still laughs at u cuz ur not around rappin no more and u can't rap at all, your just posers!!! look like circus bozos.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of good beats.......2006-01-02

I hate to say that despite some good beats this disaster fails on every way possible. Biggie is turning in his grave right now and Lil Kim should be happy that she's no longer with this group of snitches. They need to give up rapping because they only had two talented members and nobody wants to sign a bunch of snitches. Thier fist album was good but this is pure absolute garbage from start to finish. This is one of the worst albums of last year.

      1 out of 5 stars Just BAD.......2005-11-08

Junior MAFIA needs to let go and move on. The only two members that had talent in that group were Biggie and Lil' Kim and they've lost both of them. After Big died Junior Mafia struggled, they didn't put out any albums but did put out a few songs that weren't too bad. Now with Kim gone, who was the only one keeping the group alive after Big died, they have absolutely nothing. There is little to no creativity in this album, the rhymes are boring, and its basically just a big mess. Don't waste your money on this sad attempt by Junior MAFIA. The game is over for you guys, you can't make good music, nobody wants to sign a bunch of snitches anyways, and your stupid DVD's are so biased that nobody takes them seriously. Do yourselves a favor and quit now, you've already ruined the legacy of B.I.G.

1 out of 5 stars Should be called a riot.......2005-06-19

I Always have respect for junior m.a.f.i.a., but this album is so awful and lame, that it made me very dissappointed, this is a disjointed and ridiculous album with Lil Cease embarassing himself and the songs are lamer than ever and the lyrics are truly, truly annoying, Although Junior M.A.F.I.A. Isn't as bad as GED Unit and other current horrible groups, but this album is a dead zone.

Riot Musik is a 3 dimension of the 1995 album.
