Album Description

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet—79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Spike that promises but delivers only now and then!.......2006-11-23

This 2002 Spike Jones indie release of some rather rare tracks in the Jones arsenal is one that promises alot but doesn't really deliver overall.
Harlequin is an indie company in England who makes their living obtaining copies of sometimes rare/hard to find records now in the hands of private collections and releasing them onto records/CDs....a great way to get around copyright laws in many countries.Harlequin,Proper,Flapper,ASV,et al have done very well over the years trying to fill the niche collectors market in material that the biggies won't or aren't interested in releasing. This release while produced in England was made in the Czech Republic....make of that what you will,if anything.
This is great for collectors and compleatists looking for those rare items to add to their favourites collections. But like everything else in this world caveat emptor, buyer beware. Not all indie releases are made equal as some companies take more pains to get their work done as well as they can while others are just out there to exploit a gullable public.
While this release doesn't fall into the latter category by any means it is certainly from a audio point of view rather disappointing. It's a mixed bag with some tracks sounding quite well while others sounding pretty poor.
There are two main factors involved here: 1) the person on the sound board,i.e. the expertise/committment at equalizing and remixing the sound the best he/she possibly can and 2)the source material involved,i.e.how worn/damaged are the pressings they have to work with.
And this is the crux on which buying these releases rest on.You takes your chances and settle for what you gets.
Another bone of contention I have with the release are the liner notes. For the most part they are all over the place. They are written by a member of the Spike Jones International Fan Club who(should have known BETTER) wrote them like he was releasing them to a bunch of buddies instead of a more generalized public. It's filled with alot of inane patter,in-jokes and references. While I "got" many of them this kind of liner note is NOT for general fan consumption and shows a disturbing lack of professionalism and subsequent lack of respect for the buyer.
To top this the liner notes do blurbs on just 13 of the 23 tracks on the disc!! The best thing about the booklet really are the pictures included, not much else.
In conclusion unless you are a Spike Jones compleatist who REALLY wants these performances, about five released studio recordings and the rest split between alternate takes and live recordings, then I suggest you give this a pass. The sound varies considerably on these tracks and are no where near what you would hear on official releases and should have been better than they are.And let's not get into the liner notes again....as annoying as a Popcorn Sack!!

3 out of 5 stars New To Spike? Don't Buy this until you complete "Slickers 101".......2006-07-28

If you are new to Spike and the Slickers, buy one of the "Best of Collections" first! The reason is simple: those CDs contain the polished, finely tuned performances that made us fans. This CD contains material that an old time Spike fan like me appreciates as "the other stuff Spike did".

5 out of 5 stars And now for some REAL info?.......2003-05-15

Incredible performances: just listen to the live performance of "Dance of the hours", or Tommy Dorsey trying to fit in Spike's rendering of his own sig tune "I'm getting sentimental over you" (also live)... a bunch of other gems too. BUT: again, like with the other Harlequin records, you have to know already a lot about Spike & Slickers, because their liner notes keep referring to "insiders only facts". I like the style of the notes, but the contents are lost on me... Since I actually would have liked to rate this CD SIX stars, leaving of one for the liner notes still gives me five stars. Hahaha!

5 out of 5 stars Long lost Spike Jones tracks surface!.......2003-01-25

Harlequin has been releasing hard-to-find Spike Jones items since the 1980s, beginning with the Standard Transcriptions. But this new release, Fonk, is absolutely the best of the litter! Even if you are a rabid Jones collector, you will find a goldmine of long out-of-print discs, previously unheard radio excerpts, interviews, and even several alternate performances from Spike's golden days with RCA Victor. The sound is quite good on all tracks. There is not a "lemon" among them!

A groundbreaking 70 minute John B DJ mix of futuristic electro and trance-influenced drum & bass killers. Drawing from the 1980s electro and synthpop. Beta Recordings. 2002.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-01-28

John B's amazing CD is completely different and groundbreaking for D'N'B. His perfect combination of Trance and D'N'B makes for great music.

      5 out of 5 stars Fun. Clever........2003-05-20

An amazing tour de force by John B, it starts with the tongue well positioned in cheek with two pure 80 tunes, "Celebrity" (which sounds just like the song for the main titles in a teen explotation movie) and "American girls" (the catchiest song of all the album). It moves subtly to the drum'n bass realms, and it finally makes an astounding homage to trance. Some of those final tracks are tunes that Oakenfold could die for. But with drum'n bass rythms, don't forget.

      Extremely fun, addictive, and recommendable.

5 out of 5 stars off da hook.......2003-02-17

starts RETRO with the crazy 80s electro, and is straight up jungle by the end...bordering on genius in a wonderfully cheesy way.

      5 out of 5 stars Essential.......2002-11-26

One of the most technically clever albums out there. It is an essential to any dance music collection.

5 out of 5 stars HOT HOT HOT.......2002-11-13

Jim Rome is in-your-face brash, off-the-wall brilliant, and emphatically not a nice guy. From his syndicated radio talk show to televised spots on ESPN2, millions have followed this motor-mouthed sports punk into his imaginary "jungle," where athletics, politics, and show biz meet on the street to quarrel and brawl in hilariously deadpan rock-jock slang. To "run smack" on the air, Rome's "clones" must submit to the supreme Law of the Jungle: "Have a take and don't suck." On Welcome to the Jungle, their takes bound from NASCAR to karma, spelling bees to cops, helped by the Ramones, Flatt & Scruggs, Guns 'n Roses, and James Brown. The chilling humor of "Don King Did That" leads many tracks running to daylight in this anarchic stampede. Welcome to the Jungle is an "all that" CD--a spoken-word collection that rocks. And none of it sucks. --Alan Greenberg

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not worth 1/4 the price you pay.......2000-04-26

Take it from a long-time listener and huge fan of Jim Rome's: This CD is for neither those already acquainted with the show, nor for those curious sorts who are desirous of an introduction. An essential element of Rome's talent as a radio host is his incredible ability to improvise and never lose control of the direction of his show. He is always on top of a myriad of topics, sharp, and a very fast wit. His ability to deal spontaenously with any absurd or unexpected course the show may take is what drives the program and is a joy for the listener to be in the presence of. The CD provides none of this. Rather, it is a collage of now "famous" incidents from the Jungle's history, and is too tightly organized and scrupulously framed to ever resemble what actually occurs on the radio every day. Additionally the few tracks of bumper music included are a waste of space to my mind. If you don't know the show, listen to it firsthand. If you are a fan who wants to relive some great Jungle moments, do so in your own memory.

      1 out of 5 stars Dead Air.......1999-11-06

This weak attempt at making a buck is about as "fresh" as that fuzzy stuff in the back of a clone's refrigerator. The Jungle is an endless loop of retakes already, who needs a cd? Why somebody would buy this is anyone's guess--Rome's jobless audience can get this stuff for free. But if you must have it, wait a little longer, it will soon be available at your neighborhood 99-cent store for the holidays.

1 out of 5 stars Only One Thing Can Explain This.......1999-08-27

I love Jim Rome and I think that his show is brilliant. However, fitting all of that onto one CD is impossible. I gave this CD a 1 star because you can listen to his show for free and it is infinitely better. There is only one reason that I can give for Jim doing this...... THE MONEY!

      1 out of 5 stars Bummer of a CD.......1999-07-21

This CD was not at all cool. What was it? A few funny parts (sports, cops) the rest was just noise! I've spent better money.

1 out of 5 stars I want my money back!!.......1999-05-16

This has got to be the worst CD I have bought in years!! I've got a take for you Jim, "Don't waste the money of your fans putting out this crap!" Not even the few musical gems by Guns N Roses and the Romones could save this. Have a point and don't suck Jim Rome!

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Orchestral Experience .......2007-03-07

This recording is the World Premiere of Charles Koechlin's Jungle Book and received the Orchestral Gramophone Award and was, memorably, accepted by the son of the composer. Charles Koechlin loved Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book and set different parts of the book to music at various points in his career. The first of these - The Three Poems - bear the titles: Seal Lullaby, Night Song in the Jungle and Song of Kala Nag, with texts from The Jungle Book. The music, scored during 1904 - 04, is exotic and evocative. The lullaby mimics the gently lapping of waves as the soprano and chorus spin a soothing tapestry of sound. The Night-Song in the Jungle had a cadence that suggests movement (sung by the soprano, tenor, baritone and chorus) and is a song of well-wishing to the animals of the night. The Song of Kala Nag is a lament of an elephant that has been tamed for his old life in the jungle, sung by the tenor. The poem describes a night in the year when all of the elephants gather to dance together and, rather than being somber, the music is triumphant as the elephant recounts his past freedom and vows to have it again.

The Spring Running was written during 1925 - 27 and has four sections: Spring in the Forest, Mowgli, The Running and Night. These are atmospheric pictures of the final part of Kipling's book where Mowgli leaves the jungle for the world of humans. The series of tone poems relate how Mowgli is taught the laws of the jungle by the tiger Bagheera and the bear Baloo. The Mowgli section is particularly descriptive of a young man discovering the jungle and is beautifully scored to describe the awe of the unfamiliar and The Running beautifully describes life in the jungle.

The Meditiation of Purun Bhagat was longer in the writing having been attempted from 1903 and 1923 and finally completed in 1936. This tone poem describes Purun Bhagat who was a powerful politician and becomes a pilgrim and saves a village from destruction. It is an atmospheric piece the gradually builds from a long, meditative melody to a fortissimo climax, then returns to the serenity that began the movement.

The last pieces, The Law of the Jungle and Les Bandar-log, were written together. The Law of the Jungle is the reciting of the laws by Baloo the bear and sounds like a sing-song pronouncing of the laws, each capped by a gong. Les Bandaar-log are a group of noisy monkeys that live atop the trees and are disliked by the other jungle residents as being loudmouthed. The final tone poem begins quietly, as if the sun is rising over the jungle. After this quiet introduction, the monkeys are described with the use of jagged rhythms that develop into contrasting melodies.

This is very expressive music that beautifully conveys the atmosphere of Kipling's Jungle Book. The performance by the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin is beautifully played and certainly a labor of love for David Zinman. The recording is nicely balanced and captures each nuance of this expressive music.

      5 out of 5 stars Evolving Masterpiece.......2005-12-21

It is only recently that I have actually heard any music by Koechlin. Until then, he was just another minor French composer (a bit like Rubbra and Finzi, though they are at last becoming better known, and not before time). The music I heard was The Spring Running, which I heard on Radio 3 whilst driving to my daughter's school. So, it may be that at last Koechlin is getting recognition too. I found Spring Running so interesting that I bought the CD set featured above.
However, since hearing the entire Jungle Book, my favourite section is now the three songs that begin the work (op 18). And what fine songs they are. Whereas the orchestral tone poems (?) are sometimes discursive, the songs are focussed, evocative. Not only Debussy but also Schoenberg (esp. Gurrelieder) and even Strauss are hinted at to my mind.
Although only a personal opinion, my favourite song is probably the "Chant de Kala Nag". There is a song, I think by M People, called "Look for the Hero inside yourself", and I think Johan Botha, with his fine heldentenor style, brought out the suppressed hero inside Kala Nag. Wonderful stuff, from the almost ruminative "Je me souviens de qui je fus..." to the fine climax at "aux gites verts des taillis clos!", to be repeated at "...sans maitre!", Botha really shows what lies closest to Kala Nag's heart.

      5 out of 5 stars Neglected Masterpieces.......2003-08-17

Simply put, I adore these works. Koechlin is a composer I only stumbled onto recently, in a wonderful disc of works for bassoon and orchestra/piano (highly recommended). His works for Kipling's The Jungle Book are some of the most original and compelling music of the 20th century (no hyperbole intended). Kipling's work obviously fascinated Koechlin, who wrote his first Jungle Book piece, a set of three orchestral songs, early in his career, and continued throughout his life writing piece after piece to capture its music. It's not guaranteed to please, however; Koechlin's sound world is highly unique, and he never pushes the big effect, preferring to explore the more spectral range of the orchestra. The result is a haunting and searching score, but one that is extremely powerful and compelling.

The three songs are very Debussy-ish without being overtly derivative. The first one in particularly is incredibly beautiful, the other two relying more on orchestration and atmopshere (Koechlin is a master orchestrator). Things really get exciting with The Spring Running, a set of pieces which deserve careful listening, though they sound great the first time around. The second disc, in my opinion, is the highlight of the set, as each piece builds on and complements the previous one. The Meditation of Purun Bhagat begins with a slow ruminiation that gradually achieves transcendence. The Law of the Jungle is something like Ravel's Bolero (though you couldn't dance to it), in its ability to raise repitition to an art form. And finally, you come to Les Bandar-log, the most exciting, bewildering, dazzling piece I've heard from Koechlin. I can't say anything about this piece...but there's a whole world inside it.

I can understand why these works aren't in great demand in the concert halls, but on disc, they should have a long and prosperous life. Highly recommended for its originality, beauty, and most of all, shameful neglect!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Recording of the King Kong Score.......2001-12-21

I own and have listened to all the recordings of the score to the film King Kong (1933). This is simply the best of them all. Fred Steiner's recording is even superior to Max Steiner's original soundtrack recording. The CD's only shortcoming is that Fred Steiner did not record the entire score. Most of the score is here, and it is magnificent.

      5 out of 5 stars A classic score.......2000-03-01

This recording was previously released but I couldn't get it before. That's why I'm glad to know that this magnificent score was re-recorded and is now avilable again. Fred Steiner reconstructed the score and, of course, this is the best recording ever made. Rhino and Ryko seals are trying to offer us old recordings with lots of dialogues... That's a pity.

3 out of 5 stars Great rendition but INFERIOR to the John Morgan Reconstruction (w/MSO).......2007-01-02

I like this rendition of Steiner's classic score. It was the best up until John Morgan completely reconstructed the entire score and put the heart and soul into it that has Steiner smiling from up above. Therefore, I say forego this version and shoot for Morgan's (with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra).

Most noticeable: this "Jungle Dance" is lacking and sloppy. It doesn't provide the impact or power of the original score and has always bugged me. When you listen to Morgan's version, you'll love it and think, Yeah, that's it. that's the ticket!
