    Album Description

The Mannish Boys are one of the most universally praised new blues bands, both live and on record, since the heyday of the blues genre a half century ago, receiving virtually unanimous rave reviews from both the blues specialty press and general entertainment reviewers. The current edition of The Mannish Boys features a veritable one-band blues festival of talent; most of the members either lead or are integral members of other successful touring and recording bands. They've honed their blues to a brilliant edge through appearances before sold-out crowds and on festival stages in the U.S., Canada, and in Europe. Their new live recording, "Live & In Demand", captures The Mannish Boys at the top of their game at the 2005 Winthrop Blues Festival, rolling out their dynamic, non-stop, old-style 'blues revue' featuring acclaimed veteran bluesmen Finis Tasby, Johnny Dyer, Kid Ramos, Franck Goldwasser, Leon Blue, Randy Chortkoff, Richard Innes and Tom Leavey.

Yeah looks like it's a great get, if you haven't already got every CD by disney. Didn't know the song You'll be In my Hear was a Tarzan track. Must be a spin off to You'll be in My Heart. Its all good.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection!.......2003-10-19

I have to say, that with a 5 year old who is obsessed with the movies that these songs go with, it has made the perfect gift! She spends hours listening to this CD while doing more productive activities than sitting in front of a TV watching the movie. The songs are special to her because of the movies, and she actually does her schoolwork well with these fun songs playing. As a music lover and a Disney lover, we both agree at 5 and 30 that this is a hit.

5 out of 5 stars For adult listeners, the Disney songs sung by "real" singers.......2003-07-22

Trivia Challenge: Included in the 16 tracks on "Disney's Superstar Hits" is the only song from a Disney film to hit #1 on the Billboard Pop Charts. See if you can remember which one it is before I give the answer away at the end. No peaking ahead.

The songs collected on "Disney's Superstar Hits" are mostly from the 1990s; there is "Once Upon a Time in New York City" from way back in 1988 from "Oliver and Company" and a few songs from the 21st century. But the only golden oldie is "Put It Together (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo)," which comes from "Cinderella II" and not the original. The obvious frame of reference would be to see this collection as representing the Disney Renaissance ushered in by the Alan Menken/Howrad Ashman era, which makes it strange that nothing from "Little Mermaid" is included. But the common denominator to this collection is that the songs are not sung by the characters from these films, or, more properly, the people who did the voices for the characters. So instead of Angela Landsbury doing "Beauty and the Beast" it is Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson.

There are several songs from the less than stellar direct to video Disney sequels, such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II," "The Lion King II: Return to Pride Rock," "and "Cinderella II," which would be a minor complaint. But Tina Turner sings one of the songs, so it is hard to complain. In fact, the strength of this collection is indeed the superstar singers. Most of them are blasts from the past such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Sting, Huey Lewis, and Randy Newsman, but there is also new blood such as Christina Aguilera, Sarah McLachlan, Vanessa Williams, and even Jennifer Love Hewitt. Peabo Bryson comes out ahead, with the aforementioned "Beauty and the Beast" and another duet, "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle.

This disc is perfect for grown ups, who like the "real" singers singing the best songs from the Disney movies their kids have been dragging them to for the past decade. Vanessa William's "Colors of the Wind" is my personal favorite, although it is hard not to recall the fantastic opening of "The Lion King" when you hear Elton John do "Circle of Life." On the fun side of the ledger I like Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett working their collective ways through "You've Got a Friend in Me" a bit more than Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M's "Hakuna Matata."

Trivia Answer: "A Whole New World" was #1 on the Billboard Pop Chart for one week starting on March 6, 1993. It is the song that replaced Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" after 14 weeks on top.

    4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2002-12-29

This is a great CD, but I was kind of disappointed that there weren't more tracks on it. Other than that, you and your kids will be singing along in the car for sure.

    4 out of 5 stars Klassical KISS..........2004-06-25

KISS tribute albums started cropping up more than a decade ago very quickly oversaturating this market with a multitude of cds of varying quality (Hard To Believe, KISS of Death, Spacewalk). Now comes a tribute cd that offers a fresh and unique take on old KISS classics. Classical orchestration has long been a staple of KISS' repertoire, going back to the string ensemble used for the mega-hit Beth in 1976 progressing to the orchestral leanings and gregorian style chanting of the Elder album (1981) to the symphonic version of Black Diamond on their official KISS My A** tribute album to 2003's full blown KISS Symphony project.
This quartet interprets both well known KISS tunes (Detroit Rock City, Rock and Roll All Night) and more obscure material (Goin' Blind). Some of the choices are downright offbeat, a string quartet version of the funky Ace Frehley number New York Groove...surely you jest...but what is remarkable is how well it works.
Undisputed highlights are the beautiful renditions of Hard Luck Woman, Goin' Blind and Beth. The quartet incorporates subtle new parts that compliment these well loved melodies tremendously. Love Gun and I Was Made For Lovin' You are extremely powerful renditions also, if not just a little too reminiscent of the KISS Symphony cd and dvd. Even overplayed numbers like Calling Dr.Love and Rock and Roll All Nite are given new life by this incredibly talented ensemble.
From the Rock and Roll Over album influenced cover art to the last strains of New York Groove, this unique tribute cd is a winner all the way.

5 out of 5 stars From a (classic) KISS and Classical music Fan!.......2004-04-23

EXCELLENT! I just bought this CD, and have already listened to it a half dozen times. I am a HUGE fan from the classic KISS years (1974-1979 - the years with Peter and Ace in the group).
If you are a KISS fan, and also like string quartet music, you will love this. If you are a fan of either (KISS or string quartet music), you will have a better appreciation and like for both after purchasing and hearing this CD.
These guys give the correct respect to classic KISS performance and it is especially seen in the string harmonies, and Ace's guitar solos in each song (except of course "Beth" which didn't have a solo by Ace until the "Unplugged" CD). The only down side of this are the songs that aren't on it, but hopefully that will mean a Volume 2!

    GREAT CD!

      5 out of 5 stars Spectacular! .......2005-09-09

This is the most exciting performer I've heard in years. How often does one find an album where every single song is as good as the others? This is that rarity. Zydeco at it's very best. Popular American music at it's very best.

      5 out of 5 stars rosie rocks ! ! !.......2002-09-03

a wonderful blend of soul, real r&b,beach music, and zydeco...what truly surprises is the outstanding musicianship of the band, and the cover of "don't let the green grass fool you" is killer....

5 out of 5 stars Damm Right, I Got The Zydeco?.......2001-06-18

Zydeco? Heard it before, never paid too much attention. I saw her live last night at a small club called Blind Melon's in Pacific Beach, CA. I only had money for one of her cd's or I would've bought all five. Great lyrics, and a great band, including a 15 year old drummer.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but better live........2000-08-01

I saw Rosie Ledet last week at Tipitina's, in New Orleans, and she was just fantastic! This CD is great, her music is very strong, but don't miss a chance of seeing her live. It's pure energy, a mix of African-American, French, and Lousianian cultures, with the right spice. Great lyrics. And too bad the pictures on the CD don't do justice to her.

Groove Collective's latest effort functions a bit like an auditory Rorschach test--perceptions of the NYC-based jam band's album change depending on the mood you're in while listening to it. For example, when having a bad day, the disc might cause you to throw it out the window, wondering why such a talented group of musicians continually insists on cranking out tired acid-jazz albums filled with clichéd flute solos, boring bongo beats, and tired Fender Rhodes hooks over ho-hum disco-funk rhythms. However, in a cheerier mood, you just might realize how pretty these old-school hipsters still manage to sound at times, as when lilting synths flitter about a plush musical montage during the opening track, "Time Pilot," or when a delicate bossa nova beat taps lightly on a drum cymbal on the whimsical "You're Stepping on My Daisy." Most of all, one might notice how provocative GC still manages to be when they hit a solid groove, as on the title track (the album's most invigorating cut) as a rolled piano chord continuously shifts and modulates over a hypnotic thump provided with funky grace by bassist Jonathan Moran and drummer Genji Saraisi. --Sylvia W. Chan

      5 out of 5 stars Blissfully Minded.......2001-06-13

I've just purchased this CD recently and it's the most awsome CD that I've ever heard. Although when I heard it for the first time, I was not to fond of some of it's tracks, but after hearing it time after time, I've grown to love it especially "You're Stepping On My Daisy". It's a song for your wondering mind. This is absoultely the CD to put in your collection along with other acid jazz titles. It's colorful, jammy and thoughtful thinking for your mind and soul, and if the fans out there feel the same way that I feel then they know where I'm coming from.

5 out of 5 stars Mood, Feel and Soul.......2001-03-08

A copy of this was given to me by a friend and it stuck on me right away! Declassifying the barriers as they call it, this NYC 7-piece outfit delivers the goods with musicianship and songwriting. Just the right mixture of Jazz, Pop, Latin, Dance, New Age and more to create the perfect blend of hypnotic beats, stellar arrangements, and airy vocals. It's All In Your Mind should appeal to a broad range of people. The instrumentals have hooks in themselves that should shake anyone's booty! It's just the right amount of sololing without being self-indulgent that takes the listener on that proverbial journey, but never strays too far from good danceable fun! Listen in good health!

4 out of 5 stars Well worth checking out.......2001-02-24

Having read some reviews and heard tantalising samples before this CD arrived on my doorstep I was not sure what to expect. One of the GC trademarks in their earlier albums (for me anyway) was the huge sound of the horn section. I'd heard that some of the horn players had moved on to other pursuits, and that Nappy G was also no longer part of the lineup. With this in mind I was not sure whether this CD would measure up to earlier efforts.

My fears were misplaced. Not only do Richard Worth and Jay Rodriguez deliver some of the most searing horn and flute solos I've heard in a while, the rhythm section just slams throughout the CD. The sound is more sparse than some of their earlier albums, but this is not a bad thing, in fact as a listener I'm appreciating nuances from other instruments that might have been obscured by the sweeping horns on previous projects.

The compositions are creative and interesting, Ocean Floor is remarkably funky with a great bassline, while Comparasa Tunina just has me grinning involuntarily, and marvelling at Bill Ware's vibes solo. Chucho Valdez's piano solo on Stargazer is monumental, and "In your mind" is an extremely interesting piece of music (gotta love the Beatles-esque hook near the end :).

This is a leaner, more muscular Groove Collective, the roster might have been pared down but there's still no compromise when delivering thought-provoking and seriously funky, foot-tappin' music.

      Highly recommended.

      4 out of 5 stars I'm a faithful Groove Collective fan............2001-01-24

This CD keeps in stride with all of their previous work. Great beats, tight acid riffs and samples make this one of their best productional works. A good CD........

3 out of 5 stars jack of all trades.......2006-02-18

Fareed is a master gut-string stylist. His electric work has no insight into tone. When the band refers to old-school funk, it undermines itself with it's lack of warmth. On eastern inspired numbers, the discoish rhythms and forced structures bog down the flow. Apparently jam bands are a big deal, and therefore, GM is a good business decison..only.

      4 out of 5 stars Groovy ethno-jazz..dig it!.......2005-09-05

Coupla tracks don't exactly work, but at least 2/3 of this is super-delicious soul smacking ethno-jazz fusion. Fareed Haque--half Indian, half Chilean--a master guitarist, teams up with fluid fusion bassist Kai Eckhardt, keyboards player Eric Levy and drummer Alan Hertz to deliver a CD of rare treats that please the psyche no end.

The last track, Milk Carton Blues, is minus Mr. Haque and a nifty little number, but for the full flavor of the band, check out the title track, Junckt, Be Dope, and Beware My Ethnic Heart. These you can't live without if you're a world fusion maven. These guys mix the grooves with the world music thing and do it so well it's a real pleasure.

You can hear the influence of Zawinul/Weather Report on a couple of tracks and that's a good thing; Garaj Mahal has learned from the best, integrated it, and moved it in their own direction.

Cool band. Nice cover art, too. A winner.

5 out of 5 stars Garaj Mahal - The Jazz Rock Jam Band Super Group.......2005-01-23

      LADIES AND GENTLEMENT, GARAJ MAHAL!

Happily, this band has true synergy. In the classic sense of the word that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts," Garaj Mahal has no weakness. The band is capable of supreme moments of clarity where time and space expand and you are one with the music. In addition the soloing capabilities of each member is at the level of talent where you are simply mesmerized by how good these guys really are.

The band is an interesting combination of elements with a touch of humor that makes them hard not to like. Kai Eckhardt, probably most noted for his work with the John McLaughlin Trio, and Fareed Haque having a stint with The Zawinul Syndicate under his belt lead this quartet through some Jazz Rock jamming that rivals any "well known" Jazz Rock musician(s), and is by far and away the very best of the now profusely proliferating "Jam Bands" scene. There are other great Jazz Rock Jam Bands to be sure, such as Aquarium Rescue Unit, The Derek Trucks Band, Bela Fleck, Charlie Hunter (Garage A Trois), and of course Phish. But none of these bands can rival the speed, dexterity, and tastefulness of Garaj Mahal. Garaj Mahal are great musicians that can jam at an incredible level, listening closely and reacting quickly, they make it all seem so easy and it always sounds so tasty.

I chose to cite "Mondo Garaj" [Their official studio release] to post this review as an example for a description of the band itself and all four of their official releases. They have a unique sound that is at once recognizable and yet smacks of many great bands and styles. From Grant Green's "Jan Jan", to the Zappaesque "Poodle Vamp", and Alfred James Ellis's "The Chicken", this band knows no limits. Their original compositions such as Hertz's "Make A Hippy Happy," Haque's "Gulam Sabri", and Eckhardt's "Never Give Up," and "Semos" (the father of all "apes" in Tim Burton's remake of "The Planet of the Apes") are perfect vehicles for the unified talent of this band and have an earthy quality that can be summed up in two words "good music".

For Jazz Rock fans, Garaj Mahal is the best thing to happen musically since the 80's. Think about that for a moment. And if I'm exaggerating, may the lord strike me de-, no, no, blind... (Thank you Mel...)

Fortunately, I have a cable connection to my Internet and have downloaded about 30 of their legally taped concerts. I still can't get enough of these guys. What's nice about their official releases "Mondo Garaj", and the three live releases "Vol. I," "Vol. II," and "Vol. III" is the significance of having different songs on each Cd and the recording quality is first class. Even though the band has over 100 concerts for download, you should consider the official releases for the reasons already cited in addition you'll be supporting the band and that's the best way to say "thank you" to a very special band.

In conclusion, no matter where you came from musically, if you're into Jazz Rock, Prog Rock, Jam Bands, Funk Bands, or playing flutes barefoot in a tree (thank you Firesign...), you'll like these guys a lot. Bet you can't buy just one!

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite.......2005-01-22

I'll keep it short. Wow! This collection of tracks is a melting pot. You'll hear almost every facet of music. I love to hear the Hammond B3 blend in so many different forms. Thank goodness for Public Radio introducing me to this group. I could go on and on, but you can't go wrong putting this in your music collection.

4 out of 5 stars Bionic Jazz Fusion.......2003-12-10

With the success of Garaj Mahal's Live Vol. 1-3 releases, the world is now ready to hear the first eruptions of this band's volcanic evolution.

When keyboardist Eric Levy joined the band, the event took place at In The Pocket Studios in San Francisco, CA. Guitarist and fellow Chicagoan Fareed Haque had tapped Levy to join Garaj Mahal, who were already performing regularly. Veteran bassist Kai Eckhardt and highly sought drummer Alan Hertz, residents of San Francisco, formed a rhythm section of unmatched skill. With Haque's gymnastic six-string workouts and Levy's finely honed keyboard work, the possibilities for the new Garaj were infinite. The quartet immediately captured their sound in the studio, and wound up with more than an hour of stunning material. Friends DJ Fly Agaric, DJ Roto, and The String Cheese Incident's Michael Kang contributed to the proceedings.

That was the winter of 2000, and not until now are the urgent, multi-dimensional sonic journeys that comprise Mondo Garaj available for all to enjoy. With moods ranging from explosive to surreal and everything in between, the album is transcendental and technically amazing all at once. The music defies conventional description, but the mix of studied jazz, eclectic world rhythms, focused funk, and spontaneous creation is immune from comparisons.

I'm so proud of Delilah and her success.Delilah has always had it in her to become a superstar and I have always waited for the day to view her album or either watch her performance on Television. As teenagers I always knew that she would do the one thing she always dreamed of. Delilah and I attended School together in Leesville, La and she was always like a big sister that I never had. Learned a lot from her and all I can say is "Please keep the good work up". Your Sis, Stephanie Greening

The CD is simply beautiful, much like the woman. She is combination of beauty, charm, intelligence and love and it comes through in her music. I am fortunate in that I actually know and love this woman. Not only do I love her talent and her music, but also her character, of which she has plenty!! Buy this CD and listen for yourself what the rest of us have known for years. How she is not on top the charts already is a mystery to me, but I have no doubt that she will be there soon, believe that!!...

      5 out of 5 stars I Love Delilah!!!!!.......2002-10-08

I had the oppurtunity to see Delilah perform in person. I "HAD" to buy the CD. She put on a great performance and I just love her mellow vibe:) I liked the fact that she was singing... and the gyrl can "BLOW". She was singing to the crew asking them to adjust the microphone and she had me just bopping to that:)

She has this song called "Woman"... it is in Acapella and I LOVE IT:):):) I LOVE HER WHOLE CD!!!!

If you are thinking about purchasing it.... just DO IT:) You won't be sorry:)

I do not know the artist personally, but I was introduced to her music by someone who does. I am a huge fan of all kinds of music. Delilah has a gift for writing songs as well as delivering them with her voice. The CD is really great and I've had the pleasure of hearing Delilah live. She sounds great on the cd and sounds even better live. She will be on the top of the charts very soon. You'll see!
