5 out of 5 stars An excellent recording.......2007-04-11

This is a terrific record of an excellent band. It is highly representative of what their performances were like. I travelled as stage manager with Chaka and her post-Rufus band (with Tony Maiden on guitar, though), and heard her perform these tunes night after night. I never tired of it then, and I haven't tired of this recording. R & B like it should be.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......2006-11-29

This Double Album set is a Must-Have on the Double. Chaka Khan and Rufus rock the house on this live recording. And on the last track "Don't Go to Strangers" is so velvet, smooth and beautiful. (Ralph Burns penned the arrangements on this one incl. special guest Joe Sample on piano). This song is like a outstanding jazz standard which turns you on and keeps you going and feel blessed.

5 out of 5 stars Get the vinyl.......2006-08-14

a) it sounds better and b) gatefold LP artwork beats the stuffing out of a 5" x 5" CD insert any day!

5 out of 5 stars Live is Live.......2003-11-20

This is the best live recording I have ever heard. Rufus and Chaka were at their very, very best, so much so that some of the songs sound better than the original. The double cd also include 4 new songs including the now famous Ain't Nobody and a wonderful rendition of the jazz standard, Don't Go To Strangers. Chaka thrives when she sings jazz, just brilliant. A must have cd for any who loves live music.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best live albums I ever heard.......2002-05-12

Rufus and Chaka are smokin' on this album. They sing their classic songs plus a few extras such as Ain't that pecular. Ain't nobody is a good track as well.

5 out of 5 stars Swingin' Boogie Woogie.......2007-02-07

Another great set from Proper, and as usual packed with information in the booklet. A real musical history lesson. But hey all you Rock-A-Billy fans be warned this is alot of early 40's swing, and boogie stuff, and you might not find it to your likin' Well worth the money and some real gems!

5 out of 5 stars Great Set Of Western Swing.......2005-11-17

"Stompin' Singers & Western Swingers" takes up where Proper's last Western Swing set, "Doughboys, Playboys and Cowboys", left off.
Plenty of great toe-tapping music from the famous and not-so-famous performers of the era.
The songs are the original versions and the sound quality is just fine.
Also included is an informative booklet with facts about the songs and the artists.
As with every other box set I own from Proper, this is a tremendous value.

4 out of 5 stars Uneven but worth the price for one GREAT song.......2005-09-21

Not what I expected. I was hoping for lots of Western swing here but many of these songs do not qualify for that category - there is no way that some of these songs could be considered Western swing. Lots of filler. But then you come upon Wade Ray's "It's all your fault!" What a find! This is one GREAT song. Sheer perfection: great lyrics, great music, a perfect vocal, wonderful guitar and fiddle. I uploaded that one in my ipod and have been listening to it ever since. If my ipod was a jukebox, I would have spent the equivalent of this set's price in quarters for all the times I have played that song. If you love Western swing, get the Bob Wills box set. He was the king of Western swing and his band was red hot.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Deal in Town.......2005-03-31

Over 100 western swing masterpieces, most not available elsewhere, are here for your dancing and listening enjoyment! Most of them are up-tempo and have jazzy and jivey themes with hot solos and impassioned vocals - nothing called "country" music today compares to this. If you have the previous set in the series (Cowboys, Doughboys and Playboys), you'll know how good the Proper label sets are, and this one is at least as good. There's also an informative booklet included, with pictures, which will teach you all you need to know about the music and the artists. If you have ever heard of Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Buck Owens or Asleep at the Wheel and appreciate this kind of music you simply can't go wrong here.

4 out of 5 stars Classic New Orleans Soul.......2007-04-10

This entry in Capitol's "Crescent City Soul" series (other volumes, each containing 20 tracks, are devoted to Dave Bartholemew's productions, "Let The Good Times Roll" which covers r&b hits from 1949 - 66, and "Fats Domino's Jukebox" as well as a Domino boxed set) is a fleet summary of an important and influential label's output covering 1959 (when 'Ooh Poo Pah Doo' was recorded) to spring of 1963, when Minit producer/auteur Allen Toussaint was drafted. The fact that the cover dates are slightly off is just one detail that gives this project a rushed, budget-line feel, especially compared to the same label's 1994 double-cd set "The Minit Record Records Story" - that package, sadly out of print, told the story of Minit's two disparate eras, with a generous 28 tracks representing the Toussaint era on disc one and 25 more covering the revived label (an outlet for Liberty's black music releases)from 1966 to 1970, plus a 20 page booklet. Nor can one avoid comparing the present series to Capitol's marvelous "Capitol Blues Collection", a 1995 - 97 project that issued about two dozen lovingly packaged, designed, and restored titles, many of them 2- or 3-CD sets with lengthy and informative notes, overseen by Pete Welding, covering long lost music by John Lee Hooker, Roy Brown, Jimmy Rogers, T-Bone Walker, and included multi-artist comps such as " the superb Louisiana Swamp Blues" and "Kansas City Blues".
No, if one knows what Capitol's legacy is and what the label is capable of, the present entry seems rather thin indeed, but taken on its own terms it does contain seminal and historically important music, proto-soul music that remains vital for listening or dancing to the present day, bridging the more aggressive r&b of the '50s (Bartholemew, Paul Gayten) with the harder edged funk wrought by The Meters and others beginning around 1967 or '68. Indeed, N.O.'s eccentric mixture of influences (Toussaint's hero was Professor Longhair)and its seemingly inexhaustible pool of brilliant musicians and singers have insured a steady stream of terrific reissues in recent years. "Fortune Teller," Mother In Law", "A Certain Girl" and "Over You" are just a few of the classics that have been covered by artists such as The Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds across the past 45 years.
John Broven's notes are fine, and all tracks have been restored to original mono, so those new to this material or recent converts will be thrilled. But, at only 20 songs, "Finger Poppin'" doesn't even break 50 minutes. For now it appears to be the best bet out there, and reasonably priced. Toussaint's next step (post-Military service) would be a&r man/producer/writer for Sansu Enterprises (through the Bell/Amy/Mala/Sansu family of labels), writing and producing classics for the great Lee Dorsey (check out his two greatly expanded classics on Sundazed, "Ride Your Pony" and "The New Lee Dorsey" as well as the 1970 masterpiece "Yes We Can Can"); for a great selection of 50 tracks by Betty Harris, Calvin Lee, Art Neville and other N.O. legends, (many backed by The Meters as of '67), check out the terrific "Get Low Down! The Soul Of New Orleans 1965 - 67" on Sundazed, which nicely captures this period of Toussaint's (and his hometown's) development, and is recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL LOOK LISTEN TO HOW NEW ORLEANS DOES IT.......2007-03-08

i have quite a few collections of new orleans fonk and soul. this one is, as the others, ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL!!!! i just love listening to joints from this particular period of music because you just do not hear this stuff on the oldies stations anymore, and it's a doggone shame. i love everything on here. no complaints at all.

5 out of 5 stars Superlatives fail me..........2006-01-24

...when it comes to lavishing praise on this compilation commensurate with its excellence...Just suffice it to say that this is both R&B and pop done to the highest standard possible. Incredibly great songwriting, singing and production from the sui generis Allen Toussaint. You can truly see why he's known as a musician's musician and is one of the towering figures of N.O. music...I saw him at the Jazz Fest a coupla years ago, and even from what seemed like miles away, with the huge crowd, he was just tremendous, blowing away every other act I saw that day...

Now, after you pick up this stellar comp of Toussaint productions, be sure to go out and get the Allen Toussaint Collection, a comp of his own solo work. You'll be very happy.

4 out of 5 stars good early New Orleans soul.......2005-04-20

while a lot of these songs may not be well known, they are great soul selections from the early days. A good contrast is the later Minit records collection from the late 60's early 70's, which is distinctly more "funky".

5 out of 5 stars Satisfaction.......2003-04-08

I bought this album on a whim. I only recognized a couple of the songs but within less than a week I knew all the words to all the songs. All the songs are catchy in the way that pop songs were meant to be. This type of music, this cajun-influenced R&B is catchy without being annoying like Doo Wop can be after listen number 30. I liken this album to early Otis songs like 'Shake' and 'Respect' or early Ray Charles songs like 'You Be My Baby'. This album is just plain fun. Neither too fast or slow and always a little off-beat (like 'Mother-in-Law' which likens the woman to satan and '39-21-46', come on, who really has these proportions?!). These were songs that were too black for white charts making them that much cooler now.

5 out of 5 stars Lock it in and Rip the Knob Off!.......2003-11-21

You will never be disappointed with the power and soul that comes forth off of Michelle Malone's latest. Her well crafted lyrics are belted out with passion over her precision guitar work, and her harmonica winds in and out of Linda's (the drummer's)perfect backbeats. Buy the album and get to her shows as quickly as possible!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2003-11-20

I had heard of Michelle Malone only as a roving member of the Indigo Girls' band. I was fortunate enough to see her (and them) live, where she played a few songs off this new album. I loved it so much I bought it from her at intermission (and got it signed) and got the chance to tell her (and Linda--the drummer on all the songs) how much I enjoyed them. This is a real southern-y rock-y soulful album with a lot of heart and some humor. I've listend to this album continuously since then, and it's wonderful--but she was even better live!

5 out of 5 stars michelle breaks new ground!.......2003-09-24

if you have known of michelle malone for a while, this cd is probably going to shock you (in a good way). this isn't homegrown, beneath the devil moon, or even hello out there. this is different. as always, malone's powerful voice is the centerpiece. her superb songwriting just keeps on getting better. but this time, accompanying her is a full band (the lowdown georgia revue). as usual, she has some very special guest vocals (and mandolin) by none other than amy ray and emily saliers (indigo girls). basically, this is a different, more rockin' michelle malone. but what makes michelle malone, well, michelle malone, is still there -- the amazing and inspiring lyrics and of course *that* voice. this is also michelle's first album on daemon since her band de soleil days.

linda bolley, michelle's drummer is the BEST drummer out there. seriously.

watch for michelle's tour to come to a town near you. you MUST hear her live!

"The jams on Stompin' Room Only are some of the best ever recorded by the band." —From the liner notes by Michael Buffalo Smith, editor of Gritz magazine

The Marshall Tucker Band, acknowledged as one of the founding fathers of the Southern rock movement, is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a recording group with a catalog restoration and release program. Stompin' Room Only, part of this collection, is the long rumored and highly anticipated album of live material recorded between 1974 and 1976.

Recorded in London, Manchester (during their only European tour), in Milwaukee, and at Charlie Daniels' annual "Volunteer Jam" in Murfreesboro during the years 1974-1976, the album was originally prepared for release in 1977 by producer Paul Hornsby and included the original lineup.

In an unusual series of events, the album's release was first delayed by Capricorn Records and, ultimately, never released, as the master tapes could not be found for more than a quarter century. They were recently discovered in pristine condition and that long-awaited album, the virtual "holy grail" of jam band music is now available.

5 out of 5 stars The Bottom Line..........2007-04-01

The Original Marshall Tucker Band captured in a quality live recording and wonderfully packaged with coinciding notes and photos. This is an instant classic.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome live performance!.......2007-01-17

Ever since I first heard this album, I just haven't gotten enough of it. I bought it about half a year ago, and it still hasn't grown old a bit. MTB puts on a splendid performance, and Toy's thumb shines through in every track. This is one for the ages!

5 out of 5 stars MTB AMAZING.......2006-07-16

This release from the Marshall Tucker Band vault leaves me
not only stompin, but happy, and bit annoyed great music like this sat on the shelf for so long.
Besides all the great hits the MTB is known for this disc showcases what a fine ensamble band they were.
If you love the Allmans at the Fillmore East and Little Feats Waiting for Columbus then this release by the Marshall Tucker band is a must have.
Every time I play it the experiance leaves amazed and wanting more!!

4 out of 5 stars A Rare Find.......2006-04-26

When I first heard about this album being released, I was thrilled at the prospect of a Marshall Tucker live album with the classic line-up. Although the production is less than perfect in spots, this is certainly a great live album.

Marshall Tucker was a great band, with some fine musicians and some truly great music. Seeing the band live here, with some of their classic songs (although with some unfortunate omissions, such as "Heard it in a Love Song") makes it well worth the cost of admission.

5 out of 5 stars Southern Rock's Holy Grail.......2006-04-03

I waited a year to review this disc because, for me, the Marshall Tucker Band's songs are timeless. My all-time favorite album is MTB's Where We All Belong, (followed very closely by ABB's Filmore East). I've listened to Where We All Belong consistently, since I received it for Christmas in 1974. I figured that if the live versions on Stompin' sounded as good after a year as they did when I first spinned it, then I could write a review.

I was a fool. Of course they'd sound as good after a year...THIS IS LIVE TUCKER AFTER ALL! Now I know that some here were disappointed that some of the tunes had already appeared on other releases. That didn't disappoint me, (probably because I knew about it before buying it - thanks to those of you who complained). But hearing the MTB deliver their "stompin'" set to what had to be a stunned crowd of Brits is incredible! The versions of Long Hard Ride, This Ol' Cowboy, Can't You See, Searchin' For A Rainbow, and Hillbilly Band, will astound any Tucker Fan. The cover should contain the warning: "WARNING: Listening to this disc while driving causes sudden outbursts of air-drumming and air-guitar. Please pull over before Toy Caldwell's solo on This Ol' Cowboy."

If you're an MTB fan and you've got any trepidation about purchasing this release, let it go. This disc will surely occupy your player for a good long time.

5 out of 5 stars Kickin' Country!!.......2006-01-10

If like me you believe that country music on the whole could use a serious kick up the butt, then you've just found the band that can do it. This bunch of southern boys are wearing some extra large kickin boots and well and truly in a league with Webb Wilder for style points.

They blend Rock and Country seemlessly with a healthy dose of southern witt. "Neck of the Woods", Kentucky Wildcat" and "Southern Belle" are the highlights on this album.

Warning: Best listened to as loud as ya wife will let ya!! (sic)

5 out of 5 stars The Heads rock on..........1999-12-21

Hooks, hooks, and more hooks. The tightest album the Headhunters have released since their debut "Pickin' on Nashville". Everyone is in top form. And, the songwriting is begining once again to equal the musicianship these boys posess. Buy it and turn it up loud.

5 out of 5 stars Very meaty Country!!!!.......1999-01-08

Greg Martin's melodious riffs amidst the rock solid rhythm section of Kenney-Young is so damn ticklish I can't stand it!!!! Combine that with the vocal range of Doug Phelps (brother Phelps) and it's just too too much. Check out "Farmer's Daughter."

5 out of 5 stars webb is no midget when it comes to music.......2006-02-08

this small man, is easily one of the greatest drummers we have ever seen, and this CD is nearly as great as he is. did they know then just how fortunate they were to hear and dance to this genius? if there were a time machine i would make my first trip to the savoy and dance to chick webb. it is not stereo, and i do not know if new tech magic could have helped in that area, but other than that..this is one of my favorite cd's....if you like this cd, then also check out louis jordand (best of).

5 out of 5 stars I love this music.......2005-02-11

Chick Webb swings hard. This stuff will get your feet moving. The more I listen to it, the more difficult it is to turn it off. Now I understand why Gene Krupa said, after the Benny Goodman band played against Chick at the Savoy in 1938, "Those cats cut us to ribbons."

4 out of 5 stars The right music but variable sound.......2003-07-24

This product, by a prolific re-issue label operating in the UK, offers the best selection of the great drummer and bandleader's studio recordings available on a single CD. Webb's band was one of the most acclaimed dance orchestras to arise in Harlem and had a fine array of soloists such as Taft Jordan (trumpet and vocal), Edgar Sampson (reeds)and, late in the decade, Ella Fitzgerald. Webb himself, however, was second to none and may have been the best pre-Jo Jones drummer in jazz. As the decade and recording practice progressed (this CD runs up to Webb's untimely death in 1939)his abilities became more and more audible to posterity.
I might specially recommend Chick Webb to those whose acquaintance with big band jazz is so far limited to Duke Ellington, as there was a good working relationship between the two bandleaders. Duke assisted Webb in his early career, and many of Webb's soloists (Jordan, tenor sax player Elmer Williams, and alto player Russell Procope among them) would later play for Duke. Moreover, Webb's arrangers such as Edgar Sampson vied with Duke for coloratura orchestration.
This CD covers Webb's peak period in the early and mid thirties (e.g. "Stomping at the Savoy" and "Blue Minor", both Edgar Sampson arrangements) as well as some of the Ella Fitzgerald hits later in the decade, such as "A tisket a tasket". It includes, speaking of Ellington, Duke's own arrangement of his "Azure", which he himself never recorded, to my knowledge.
My only reservation would be some odd distortion which occurs in some, not all, of the tracks. This is a rather "watery" sound (heard also on the Decca re-issues of the same pieces) which may be easily explicable to those better versed in recording and transfer technology than I, but I have to say that I found it distracting, and I am not a hi-fi fanatic. Otherwise what the musicians were doing is audible enough.

Bought this for the "Hockey song" which is classic Canadian "hockey night in Canada" nostalgia. I grew up listening to Foster Hewitt doing the saturday night broadcasts from the gondola high above Maple Leaf Gardens. Rest of the CD was more fun that I had anticipated.
