I remember having this album (in cassette form) years ago. The songs still resonate in my heart. John P. Kee seems to write and produce songs that just stay with you...I certainly haven't forgotten the selections on this CD, it's so uplifting and inspirational. Pick this album up if you want some early-90's John P. Kee nostalgia.

After the success of his debut, "Swass", Sir Mix-A-Lot doesn't take long to record a follow-up. "Seminar" was released two years later in 1989 and spawned such hits as "Beepers" and "My Hooptie."

    3.5 Stars

Back when I was younger I used to love this album, but now I realize Mix didn't really have any creativity in the hooks and thats mainly what brings this album down. Also the god awful "Something About My Benzo" is just straight up wackness. Mix has one of the most distinct voices and flows in the game. Still check this album out though because besides the hooks, Mix tears it up!

4 out of 5 stars Full of great songs!.......2002-04-13

I agree that if you buy only one Mix-A-Lot album, this should be the one. It is funny, clever, and bumpin'. It's not the perfect album, but it shows both Mix's strengths and weaknesses.

Mix's strength are the songs that are funny, or at least tongue-in-cheek, and "Beepers", "My Hooptie", "Gortex", "I Got Game", and "Something About My Benzo" are all brilliant. Mix's self-deprecating in the midst of boasting are what make his song lyrics great.

For example, in "I Got Game" (I think Mix's all-around best song), a great, driving cut about a day in which he goes out to pick up as many freaks as he can, after picking up one girl, he says "Roll to the hotel/game was strong/she thought I spent bank/but I really spent coupons". The lyrics to this song are all playa.

Mix's weakness is for songs that potray him as hard, or songs with a serious message. On this album, they clash, and the serious songs don't make a good showing.

"My Bad Side" is a hard hitting rap song where Mix is mad, and it works, as does "I'll Roll You Up", but "Seminar", "National Anthem", and "Peek-A-Boo Game", other songs where he takes a serious tone, fall flat and sound preachy and tedious. That's especially true for "National Anthem", which while it may have a serious message, doesn't fit at all between the hilarious "Beepers" and the odd, funny "Gortex". I actually just skip the serious songs when I listen.

And the oddest sounding song on the album, a funny, slow-ride, take-it-easy rap about Mercedes Benzes that makes you wish you own one, "Something About My Benzo", should really be more of a classic. "Not one I got three/I collect 'em you see/ an SEL, a 190, and and SEC".

On the whole though, this album is the bomb, because the good songs are really, really good, Mix's beats are strong, and his lyrics are tight and humorous. This is a great classic hip hop album. You should own it!

    5 out of 5 stars Mix's best album.......2001-10-20

If you buy only one Mix-A-Lot album, make sure it's Seminar. Mix has a style all his own. First, you can understand what the heck he's saying. That gives him a step up on many of the rap community. Next, he does not promote doing drugs. Another step up... Furthermore, his basslines never disappoint. This album is a must to show off your system's woofer output. Finally, I love his tough edge twisted with great comedic wit.

This is Mix for true rap fans. Baby Got Back may be his best selling song, but I prefer Seminar with title track, Somethin' bout my Benzo, Gortex (which I sing every time I hear the word), and Hooptie. Hooptie is a classic example of Mix-A-Lot. Comedy, rhyming skills, and basslines all mixed in a perfect package.

Must have for anyone that wants a rap representation in their collection or for the huge rap fans.

    Posse up!

2 out of 5 stars I, of course, have to be the one to break it to everybody..........2005-03-17

Regardless of the amazing line-up this band possesses, Old Man Gloom is nothing compared to any of the bands that bore it. Isis, (older) Cave-In and Converge are far superior bands to Old Man Gloom, but for stupid reasons. I don't know who writes the five star reviews for these albums, but it is getting relatively bothersome. As there are a lot of people taking these reviews seriously and going out and purchasing the albums. I am one of them, I admit it. It is real hard to find lenghty song clips of these guys on the net and so after hearing who the band is comprised of, I went out and purchased both the Christmas album and the Seminar II album. I was dissappointed and let me tell you why: (very quickly, I would like to say that I gave a higher rating--three stars-- to Christmas, if you want to know why, just look up that album and read the reviews).

Ok, to start off, this album is 58 minutes and 40 seconds long, with 17 tracks. Nine of those tracks are not complete ambience. Those tracks are: Bells Dark Above Our Heads(4:11), Branch Breaker (0:51), Hot Salvation (3:10), Rape Athena (1:46), Clenched Tight in the Fist of God (Acoustic Instrumental 2:16), Jaws of the Lion (2:42), Deserts in Your Eyes (3:09), Cinders of the Simian Psyche (2:43) and Mandied Self-Reborn (8:10). The remaining eight tracks are nothing but AMBIENCE. Now the nine tracks I just listed equal almost exactly 29 minutes. That isn't that bad. However, Bells Dark Above Our Heads is off and on ambience for the entire track, while Mandie Self-Reborn cuts off at around the minute and a half mark(1:30) and proceeds to ambience the listener to death for the remaining six and a half minutes. Also, I only included the acoustic track because it wasn't ambience. So in reality that takes the actual band playing down to even less. It is rediculous. So that basically takes the album down to about 21 minutes of actual music; 19 if you disregard the acoustic track.

What angers me even more about this whole mess is that this band has an amazing sound when they actually play. These guys are very talented, it is just that they have decided for whatever reason to make an album that is 2/3 garbage. At the beginning of the review I stated that these guys are nothing compared to the bands that bore it. Which is true, but only to an extent. If this band were to sit down and compose a few songs like Isis do, this band would immense. But they show their talent so little on their albums, that it is just frustrating. But I do have to agree with some of you when you say that they are insanely heavy. They are. If you want to pick them up for the few minutes of music, I am sure you won't be dissappointed. However, don't buy these albums full price, it is a blatant thefting of your money.

5 out of 5 stars old man gloom.......2002-09-19

i picked this cd up a while back, maybe a year and a half ago. i guess what sets this apart as a great album is the fact that it hasnt gotten old yet. its like you can take something different from it every time you listen to it. its a very experimental cd, while at the same time very solid. they use odd samples and sound effects, to go along with their music. the cd as a whole is just very hypnotic and very fun to listen to. which i suppose is the main thing after all. it also recieved a perfect 10 marks in Terrorizer magazine, which is a very rare thing. i agree with them, this is a wonderful album. you definitely get your moneys worth with old man gloom-seminar II. im a little bummed out that i havent gotten to hear seminar III, i knew i should have picked them both up at the same time. it seems to be a hard to find item now. but hey, go check these guys out.

If you took a couple of sharp sticks and forced them thru your eardrums this what your hearing could be like afterward. It sounds like blood boiling inside your head, as if you have no hopes of escaping the depths of a murky sea while massive volts of electricity rip thru the black water. Mix in some intermittent, screamy vocals from each of the three singers and some intense, gorilla-fury percussion and you have the beautiful and bowelquaking eloquence of Old Man Gloom. Features members of Cave-in, Converge and Isis.

4 out of 5 stars Still Classic Edwin Hawkins.......2002-02-05

    Hello all,
This album never got much publicity and advertisement, but the quality of the music is still the same. Anytime the Music and Arts Seminar has an album coming out, I always get it. The reason for this is because you know you're going to hear some of the best gospel ever. With Kevin Bond, Carl Wheeler, and the drummer himself (JOEL SMITH), the music has no choice but to sound good. And of course the choir is going to be nice. This is not the regergitation of other peoples' music: this is true art and gospel at its original form. The Hawkins will never fall off the gospel scene. 5 out of 5 stars One great album........2002-04-07

I just recently acquired Seminar II: Holy rites of primitivism, and I was thoroughly impressed by that album. Well, I was at a record store in Austin and saw Seminar III sitting there and tried to decide if I should get it. I knew it was only one song, so I was unsure whether I should spend the [money] to buy one song. I finally decided to. I put it in the cd player, and wow, it is one amazing cd. Throughout the entire cd I was captivated in beauty. It does not morph around as much as Seminar II, but flows wonderfully. Aaron Turner is just a great musician, along with the rest of the crew involved in this project like Nate Newton from Converge. They never fail. The screams evoke so much emotion and the instrumentation, especially the last progression of the song, is just beautiful. You have to listen to it for yourself.
I actually enjoy this album more than Seminar II. Do not hesitate on buying it.

5 out of 5 stars great melodic sludge........2002-03-26

this cd (one 27-minute-long song) is worth buying for the moment the drums kick in, the guitars are distorted, and the vocals start. amazing.
