Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.

The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

Instant Euphoria..........2007-05-18

Not only is this In Flames greatest achievement - this is one of the greatest metal albums ever written! Quality metal that is so simultaneously fast and melodic is indeed hard to come by. This album even surpasses such metal classics as 'Master of Puppets', 'Piece of Mind', and 'Rust in Peace'. Whether you like throat vocals or not (and these vocals are a unique brand of throat vocals) the songs will send you into immediate euphoric metal bliss - and the instrumental pieces are brilliant! Combine the best thrash, melodic, and death metal you can think of into one album and you have 'Jester Race: Black Ash Inheritance'. The first moment I heard this masterpiece I was hooked - if you have any love for metal then your collection is incomplete without this album.

RECOMMENDATION: Other great Swedish metal bands to check out include At the Gates, Dark Tranquility, Opeth, Soilwork, and many others. Start with this album and let your journey into metal euphoria continue...

Classic!!!!.......2007-02-21

...and that should have constituted my entire review. If ever there was an album as perfect and engaging as Metallica's "Master..." or Megadeth's "Rust..." it is this one! (yes, I am aware of Dark Tranquility, but they have yet to release ANYTHING bad, so I skip them here)! The music is so good here that no wonder ANYTHING after would necessarily have to be a dissapointment from In Flames! Yes, "Whoracle" was great,ditto for "Colony" and "Clayman", but THIS is In Flames' greatest achievement, all else in their discography is mere shadows of this masterpiece (the same can be said of Metallica and their third album). Nothing they have ever done after and before will ever top that, period.The problem is: THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE MATURED SO FAST.Really, if you can only own 1 album of In Flames, this will suffice entirely. There is absolutely no confusion what kind of music is played here: Gothenburg death metal. No core, no thrash, just death! And a melodic grim reaper at that! The knack for melody combined with the sheer power and brilliance of execution could potentially start a third World War if used in a sinister manner. Perhaps that is where my favorite heavy metal bands Dark Tranquility and Opeth take roots. In any case, if you like your metal raw but melodic, this is one of these rare perfect albums you can't afford not to own! BUY NOW!!!!

"You'll forever be stuck here in eternity.....".......2007-02-08

I remember when I first purchased this album, I thought, "Meh, this is pretty good. It'll grow on me eventually." Yeah, well, it did, and I revised that statement into, "Damn, this is awesome!" I currently own 4 In Flames albums (this, Colony, Clayman, and Lunar Strain), and while the other 3 are great, The Jester Race (accompanied by the Black Ash Inheritance EP, at least this version) is probably my favorite IF album thus far.

The music is heavy and bone-crushing, but there's enough melody and beauty (and I don't mean that in a fruity way) to make it appeal to the masses. Anders Friden is honestly one of the best metal vocalists I've EVER heard. Glenn Ljungstrom (guitar),Jesper Stromblad (guitar), Johan Larsson (bass), and Bjorn Gelotte (drums) are also great musicians, and provide the awesome melodies that In Flames can create (even though I think the bass is a lot better on Colony and Clayman than on this album). Moonshield is, simply put, stunning, as it opens up with soothing acoustic guitars and transforms into an epic-driven melodic metal masterpiece. Other great tracks are Lord Hypnos, Dead Eternity, December Flower, Wayfaerer, and Goliaths Disarm Their Davids. Of course, all of the songs are incredible.

The Jester Race is a concept album about the corruption of humankind (referred to as, well, the jester race), and how they have destroyed and ruined the earth (if you analyze the lyrics, you'll see what I mean). I believe I have the just of it, but we're talking about poetic lyrics here, not completely flat, predictable ones. The album also has some throwbacks in, such as the title track, which is reminescent of The Jester's Dance (the first instrumental). My favorite instrumental track on the album is probably Wayfaerer. It sounds a lot different from the rest of the album (and I don't mean that in a bad way). The guitar solos don't sound as bleak as they do on the other songs. Some people don't seem to like this instrumental, but I sure do. On the 4 bonus tracks (which is the Black Ash Inheritance EP that was released a year later), there's a track called Acoustic Medely, which is the title track of the album but in acoustic form. In my opinion, this is brilliantly done, and it might be my favorite bonus track. Goliaths Disarm Their Davids is another one of my favorites, very dark, yet very confident sounding, if that makes sense. There's also a live version of Behind Space from their debut (which would later be redone on Colony). This is one of my favorite IF songs to date, and the live version is done perfectly.

If there is any weak track on the album, I would have to give the nod to Gyroscope. It just doesn't seem to stand out as much as the other tracks, and it loses my attention after a while. Nonetheless, that song is still eons better than pretty much everything being released today. And it's not even that terrible of a song. The lyrics are still great, but the overall feel doesn't demand your attention as much as the other 13 songs.

So is this the best album of 1995's Holy Trinity? Well, I can't say for sure, since I also thoroughly enjoyed Dark Tranquillity's The Gallery and I have yet to hear At The Gates' Slaughter of the Soul. However, this is an amazing album to say the least. The lyrics really make you think about the world around you, and makes you question the desires of, say, eternal life (like in the track Dead Eternity, which is about living forever, never to die and be with the people you love; you're just stuck in eternity). The Jester Race is about a minority group preparing for war against a far superior and more sophisticated force (perhaps in the album's story, it's about a group of people rising up to fight the jesters who have ruined the earth). But whatever this album is about, I love it.

It's funny thinking about all of the line-up changes In Flames have gone through over the years. But no matter how many times their lineup changes, this will always remain where their lineup was strongest. So buy this album, and experience some truly unique metal.

In Flames perhaps at their best.......2006-12-04

This may be the best album In Flames ever released it is most certainly a classic along with Whoracle, Colony and Clayman. The album is itself very well done with excellent melody and rythm, awsome guitar work and very good vocals. The tracks are all memorable and this is trully a showcasing of In Flames and their work. Excellent album and deff a good place for a new In Flames fan to start off. Im not sure ive gone a week without listening to this album after picking it up which must have been back in 94 I think.

THIS IS THE BAND'S MASTERPIECE.......2006-09-19

Like drinking fine and complex wine, you will want to listen to this album over and over and over. With each sip from the goblet, a new fabric of reality is experienced and savored. Yup, it's your typical "A-class album" in your collection.

In Flames truly earns your hard-earned dollars here. The layers of harmonius diligent guitar work will leave you in awe. Wondering if you should buy this album? Have no doubts. This album has everything. Galloping thrash, multiple riffs in each track, power vocals, furious drum work, and most of all, truly unique and emotional lead guitar. WE ARE TALKING SKILLED SOPHISTICATED HARMONIES AND THOUGHTFUL COMPOSITIONS!

I can't name too many albums in my collection that feature melodious lead guitar musicianship quality in almost EACH track. Have no fears however: The melodies do not betray the utter power and aggression in this one. In Flames has a cool doomsday vision and spite for the human race that only makes their aggression all the more sincere. Audio steroids.

It is tough to say which tracks are my favorite. They each tell a "needed story" towards understanding the fate of our Jester Race!...

Track 2 The Jester's Dance and track 13 Acoustic Medley are beautiful instrumental pieces that appropriately flaunt the musical influences behind the band which are impressive to say the least. Living up in northern Europe with nothing to do but milk cows all day and listen to every metal album under the sun will do that!

Track 3 Artifacts of the Black Rain; track 5 Lord Hypnos; and track 9 Wayfaerer all have unique sounding lead guitar work that will transport your heart and soul to another time and place...

Track 6 Dead Eternity has a specific lead guitar composition that creates an emotion unlike any other in the freaking genre! It is an ominous emotion you will have to experience for yourself. It is a turning point in the album and will haunt you (in a good way).

Track 8 December Flower is pure foot tapper. Even the lyrics are geniusly positioned to compliment the rhythm chorus in this one. And just when you might think the track is too much of a contrite foot-tapper, In Flames drops a cinderblock on your head with mind-spitting speed-thrash solos.

Track 11 Goliaths Disarm their Davids is a climactic build-up of energy. The lead guitar work is inspired by the unseen gods and the vocals will leave your ears bleeding for more.

If you appreciate musicianship and thrash metal with a death metal vocalist, then you will wear out your CD like I do mine. 5 of 5 stars.

A Melodic Death Metal Classic.......2006-12-29

When a friend sent me In Flames' crushing "Trigger," I knew I had to hear more of their stuff. Being new to the metal scene, I promptly purchased "Colony" and "Reroute to Remain," which I thorougly enjoyed. At this point, I figured I should probably find out what all the buzz around Whoracle was about. One listen was all it took to know that it lived up to the hype. With undisputed metal classics like Jotun and Episode 666, the album radiates excellence. The heavy-yet-melodic riffs that give In Flames a good name make this is an absolute must have for any metal fan.

Classic of the genre.......2006-12-04

Whoracle is one of In Flames greatest albums ever and most certainly a top 10 in the all time Melodic Death Metal charts. Its great metal with a distinct mood and auora surrounding it. It has that classic In Flames folky element to it and its great stuff all the way. If your a IF fan a must own, a melodic death metal fan a must own, a folk metal fan a must own and general metal fan guess what its a must own album!! Pick it up its deff one of their best efforts and a classic sure to live on for many years as it already is today. I picked it up upon its release and its still great to listen too and I do listen to it about every other day.

True Greatness..........2006-07-18

As many have stated before this is probably the best piece of work in In Flame's growing catalog. With lots of solos, twin guitar harmonies, top notch drum work and great harsh growling vocals from Anders make this album the epitome of what melodic death metal should sound like. Just about all the songs on this album are classic IF songs that fans look forward to hearing live. The lyrical concepts of the songs here are amazing, vague enough to leave them open to interpretation but still allowing the listener to get the overall idea behind them. Which is exactly how the lyrics should work for a metal album. Stand out tracks: Jotun, Gyroscope, Worlds Within the Margin and (of course) Episode 666.

Mixed Emotions.......2006-06-11

It's hard for me to objectively judge this album. While on one hand I was a little disappointed with this album, I realize on the other hand that if it weren't In Flames I would consider this awesome. Now, when I say I was disappointed, please don't get me wrong. This album is very good and any fan of melodic death who doesn't already own it is missing a key part of their collection. The songs Jotun, Gyroscope, and Jester Script Transfigured are all incredible. Jotun, especially, is one of my favorite metal songs period. The reason I give this album 4 stars is that, on Jester Race/BAI there are NO weak songs. Everything is good, except those songs which are great. On Clayman, there is only 1 weak song (in my opinion), but here there are songs that I skip when I listen to it. The Hive would be total filler if not for the guitar solo, Worlds Within the Margin is kinda blah, Whoracle is basically just an extro rather than an independant song, and Episode 666, while kinda catchy musically, has some of the most bland, redundant lyrics to be found on any In Flames track in existence.

On the whole, this is very good, and even some of the tracks I disliked are popular amongst most In Flames fans, but in my opinion this record falls a little short of greatness.

SKSK rock.......2007-03-15

I stumbled upon this band during their tour with Mest, and I must say I was immediately impressed. Its not often that you see a band these days with a different sound, and I can assure you that SKSK is unlike other things you've heard recently. After having listened to both their albums I can assure you that SKSK have grown and matured into the band they are today, and you can only expect things to get better.

Just to clear up a few descrepancies, this band is not emo and no, "emo" does not JUST mean "emotional" in terms of music. If "emo" meant "emotional music" then everything from Jewel to Luther Vandross to Barry White would be "emo". The term was coined in the late 80s and means "emotive hardcore". but regardless, this band is not emo. And please don't compare this band to Chiodos just for the simple fact that both bands have a keyboard player. That is their only similarity and comparing them just isn't fair.

Even I'll admit that when I first heard this band I liked them. I enjoyed their simple style and catchy keyboards. But the more I listened to them, the more I came in touch with the actual value and quality of these songs. What bothers me most is the lyrics. Lyrically, this band is defintely below-average. They are so full of immature teen angst that they make me believe he wrote these songs when he was a scrawny, pubescent 13 yr old. There is absolutely no depth so if you are a lyrics person than this band is NOT for you. The second thing is the guitars. This band produces the same cheesy riffs as any other band out there. Infact, the riff at the very beginning of "The Only Medicine" sounds exactly like something Avenged Sevenfold put out a couple years back! Again, it's their lack of creativity and originality that makes this band only a few steps away from being the next Good Charlotte or Limp Bizkit (creatively-wise. I'm not actually comparing the bands) Basically, if you are into really good THOUGHTFUL music the only reason why you'd keep listening is because its "catchy". But before you grab your wallet and run out to get this CD rememeber that "catchy" isn't always a good thing. After the first couple times of listening to this CD you are bored to death because the songs have become so predictable.

Bottom line = If you are wanting some really good creative music with a lot of originality and lyrics that aren't almost humorous, then use your money to buy something good like "Translating the Name" by Saosin, or "All's Well That Ends Well" by Chiodos or "Juturna" by Circa Survive. Granted those bands don't have much in common with Scary Kids, but trust me, that is a good thing.

But, if you are just looking for some cathy music that requires no active brain use to comprehend, or looking for something to play in the background of a party then pick up this CD used for like 6.99 or 7.99. Or just download it for free at [...] That would be your best bet instead of wasting your money.

A few notable tracks..........2006-04-20

I heard about these guys through PureVolume and I was impressed with the song "A Breath of Sunshine". I went out and bought the CD cheap for ten bucks at Coconuts. Not a bad deal. But I wouldn't spend more than that on it. This is the kind of music that could be considered 'emo', even though I hate that term and try not to use it, since technically all music has emotion and is therefore 'emo'. But my point is, if you don't like that screamo punk style, this album isn't for you.

Overall this was an enjoyable album in my opinion. I think the best tracks were "A Breath of Sunshine", "The World As We Know It", and "The Bright Side of Suffering". They are pleasing to the ear, and maintain a punky sound without being annoying or "over-screaming".

However, then there's "Faith in the Knife". Guh. My least favorite track. Just look at the title. Love life, dude. i.e.-Bad lyrics, IMO.

I'd say just listen to the clips and individually download the ones you like, unless you can pick up this album for under 10 dollars.

Pretty amazing concerning..........2006-03-15

Scary Kids Scaring Kids has definitely improved from their After Dark EP, their music definitely sounds more professional, and the screaming sounds better. They are pretty amazing concerning some the (...)scremo bands out now such as hawthorne hights(gay). IF you are a fan however of silverstein,old A static Lullaby, underoath or chiodos(amazing scremo or whatever-core bands) you will love these album.The singing isn't annoying, they are good muscians, and the screaming isn't overdone. So My advice is to listen to a couple songs and if you like it definitely go buy it.

A melodic metal masterpiece, and one of the best metal albums of 2006.......2007-06-27

Two words: simply stunning! This album was a turning point for In Flames, as it is the first to feature and emphasize Anders singing abilities from start to finish. Anders has a very distinctive voice, one that can range from death metal/cookie monster growls, screams, and singing. He is, undoubtedly, one of the most poignant and powerful frontmen in metal today. The guitar work between Jesper and Bjorn is fantastic with plenty o' harmonized riffs and solos galore, and incredible drum work by Daniel Svensson. The more I listen to this album, the more I am amazed by it. Many fans of their early work may not get or like this album because of the new direction they decided to take on it, but this is one of the few Gothenberg metal bands that continues to progress for the better. Too bad I can't say the same for Soilwork.

Perfect! Absolutely Perfect.......2007-06-20

People seem to think because this is the same band, but they have changed their playing style, that this CD sucks. That is completely not true! In Flames changed quite a bit. Lunar Strain was their first cd, I agree that it was a great cd. Then came The Jester Race, Their best by far with Moonshield and the album titled The Jester Race. TJR was a great album in which they really strived for an ethereal feel. Then came Whoracle, was a great CD in which they (In Flames) expiremented with a new sound of more metal riffs and just basically more perfection. Then came Colony. Colony was a great cd with those heavy melodic riffs that In Flames is known for. With introduction of the keyboards and "speaking" lyrics added ALOT more to In Flames. After Colony came Clayman. Clayman wasnt one of my favorites because it was more of a step backwards from Colony, still more melodic metal. Then the CD which really shaped In Flames into what they are today, Reroute to Remain. With melodic, very heavy metal, with introduction of chorus in almost every song, this made this CD a killer. This is where people start saying In Flames SUCKS. In Flames, does not SUCK in any one of their CD's, its called expirementing. Anyways...Reroute to Remain was more of a down to earth view of human problems. Instead of thinking of space, and the meaning of everything, In Flames started focusing on what makes the humans and their universe around them tick. The song "Black & White" explains the differences between good and bad, saying that "there is no room for two, the scale might be wide, but there is no need to be blind, between black and white, there is no room for two". This really emphesizes the idea of the connection between humans and the universe. In the album Soundtrack to Your Escape In Flames, still focused on human imperfection and relations, really used the keyboards and heavier riffs. Songs like "My Sweet Shadow", "Evil In A Closet", and "Dead Alone" were really the killer songs in the album, some of my favorites. Some people say StYE is their (In Flames) weakest album. I do not agree, and say Clayman is their weakest. StYE was just more of a change to the "dark" side, it may sound weird, but the dark side focusing on the bad things and being hurt. And Finally, and lastly, Come Clarity. So much to say about this album. This was my first ever In Flames CD. I think this is their second best next to The Jester Race because of the pounding drums and the lower octave of the bass. In Flames still has that old sound and epicness to them, but with a new, more modern feel. Songs like "Leeches", "Reflect The Storm", "Come Clarity", and "Crawl Through Knives" really stuck out to me showing me the hurting side of things. Come Clarity is a CD about hurting...being left out, and not being heard. The biggest human struggles of all right now. Depression, and not being heard. This CD really helped me get through some bad times. If there was one million stars on the chart, this CD wouldnt even be on there. Come Clarity is just a masterpiece of modern metal and melodic Gothenburg metal. There arent many keyboards in Come Clarity, but more talent. I feel this cd was only second best to The Jester Race because of the complexity to The Jester Race. The best closing i have ever heard was on Come Clarity. "Your Bedtime Story is Scaring Everyone" Is the perfect ender to a near perfect CD. Come Clarity is definately going to be one of those CD's i hold with me to the grave.

Some people are stupid........2007-04-03

While admitedly better than their last two disgraces, this album still does not even come close to their epics, The Jester Race and Whoracle (especially the former). I understand why many-a-youngin' would be blown away by these guys. If only your first exposure to In Flames had been when they released those two albums, you would understand. Seriously, what happened to Anders' voice?? I guess he thrashed it out too early in his career, like many up-and-comers. And those "solos?" The solo in "Trigger" gave my friends and I nights and nights of nonstop laughter!) Where is the epic storytelling we saw in the early days. Instead of focusing on making an album full of various singles, as they do now, they were releasing themed, yet NOT cheesy. Bjorn should have stayed on drums. And they really, REALLY need Glenn back on lead. No offense to Jesper, because when those two worked together, the result was absolute magic.

I wish I could give the younger generation some advice as to how they could truly appreciate this band, but unfortunately they were just born too late. The era of 1995-1998 was the peak of metal, but the so-called "metalheads" of today probably have too much black dye in their hair to notice. I guess my only advice would be to read some interviews with In Flames, and go listen to the bands they used to listen to. Or just go buy At the Gates, Slaughter of the Soul (the "originators" and grand-daddys of the Swedish/Metlodic death metal sound). Although at this point, I'm will to bet you wouldn't be impressed with that either.

Normally, it is wise of a band (unless they are really something special) to stick to the sound that won them fans. I tend to agree with this. However, at this point, PLEASE change, In Flames!! Either go back to the original lineup, or break up. Don't be like Metallica and stretch it out, dear God, what is it, over 25 years?? I can't imagine a quarter century of In Flaming malarky.

This could be the sister album to Snow Capped Romance.......2007-04-21

I am a big fan of these Alaskans, and thought they could not do better than A Snow-Capped Romance. I was right. But this cd is just as good, and in fact carries on the fun, fast, and ferocious music of that album. Brock Lindow is one of my favorite vocalists because his voice sounds great no matter what he is doing. He has a very distinguishable scream, which can be hard to pull off. Most guys sound the same when they are screaming their heads off. Brock makes it sound like a new vocal style. He also has a great, slightly cookie-monster-ish melodic singing voice. Most of the songs showcase his vocal talents very well. I hope they keep making music, because as heavy as these guys can be, they write great melodies and hooks, and that sets them apart from most other bands of this genre.

Definitey a Cd worth buying!!.......2007-03-09

My brother got me hooked on 36 crazyfists with their last album "Snow Capped Romance" I beleive that was just such an amazing cd still one of my favorites.... I beleive this cd is close to possibly even being better! This cd has the sound of their last cd as well as a heavier sound! These guys are one of the best metal band by far and its good to see a band that can make good cds without changing their sound. aka Trivium.. But definitely look into rest inside the flames you won't be disspointed

A masterpiece.......2006-12-06

I bought "Rest Inside The Flames" this last weekend, and to be honest I had huge expectations for this album. "A Snow Capped Romance" is simply amazing, and that would be a hard effort to match but, 36 Crazyfists surpass expectations. Brock's voice has certainly matured a great deal and sounds great. This album is definitely their best thus far, and one of the best releases of 2006 if not the best.

1. I'll Go Until My Heart Stops - The first single off the album, this song is a decent song but is the weakest point on the album.***1/2/5

2. Felt Through A Phone Line - Great song, awesome lyrics and really nice drum work. *****/5

3. On Any Given Night - Definitely sounds like a song that could have easily been on "A Snow Capped Romance" great song. *****/5

4. Elysium - Features Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage and is definitely an awesome metal song. I usually don't care for collaborations of vocalists but Howard and Brock's sound flows so well together. One of my favorites on the album. Great Guitar work. *****/5

5. The Great Decent - This song goes from soft to heavy quickly and in 36 CF fashion. Good song. ****/5

6. Midnight Swim - Another favorite off of the album, I love the lyrics. Awesome vocal work, Brock showcases that his vocals have matured a great deal since "Bitterness The Star". *****/5

7. Aurora - Sounds like something Killswitch Engage may have collaborated on (musically anyhow). Another great song, the guitar riffs will be stuck in your head for days. *****/5

8. Will Pull This In By Hand - Closest 36 CF gets to sounding like "Bitterness The Star". Again, great drum work here. *****/5

9. We Cannot Deny - Another great song, with great vocal work. *****/5

10. Between The Anchor And The Air - Another favorite. I love the guitar work on this song. *****/5

11. The City Ignites - A 36 CF acoustic song?? That's right..and it is awesome! Lyrics are the same as Midnight but that doesn't take away anything from this song another favorite. *****/5

Basically, records don't get much better than this. The trend for these guys seems to be to outdo the previous effort, which is proof here. I will be looking forward to the next release but I'm not sure if this album will be leaving my cd player by that time.

This album has placed 36 with the coveted title of "My favorite band that still puts out CDs," with Pantera being "My favorite band that no longer puts out CDs." It was neck and neck with KSE but with KSE's not so great release and 36's 3rd major release that rocks without question there is no longer any doubt. Let the news ring out from the mountaintops and woodland forests, this album, nay this band is the best thing currently producing new music. If you buy this album you will not regret it, unless you suck.

Good Screamo.......2006-11-27

This is a very good screamo album. They switch from emo to metal quite effectively. It has a well blended mix of melodic singing and screaming, with some pounding double-bass pedal madness. In my opinion, tracks 3 and 5 are terrible but the rest of the CD is good. My favorite tracks are "I'll Go Until My Heart Stops," "Elysium," and "Will Pull This In By Hand." This makes bands like Story of the Year sound like complete garbage. If you like screamo, then this CD is a must have.

Grows on you.......2007-03-01

I've been a huge In Flames fan for quite a while now, and I got this album a while back. Jester Race and Whoracle are their undisputed masterpieces (Colony and Clayman are up there, too), and when I first listened to this album I was disappointed. It seemed greatly lacking in just about every category possible in comparison to their earlier albums. Although I still prefer their earlier albums, I have come to really like this album. Unfortunately this is their last good album in my opinion. Reroute to Remain marks a change in their sound (it continues on their "newer" sound presented on Colony and Clayman, and adds some electronic samples in their music, as did Dark Tranquillity), which isn't necessarily a bad thing (it took me a while to get used to, but now I enjoy it almost as much as their older stuff). My only advice is avoid their last two albums, unless you find yourself liking their newer sound than their older sound. Overall, RTR is a very good album that evolves In Flames' sound. If you're new to In Flames, I suggest starting with Jester Race or Whoracle first, though.

This album is garbage. I love in flames and i can't find anything nice to say about this album except that when thrown from a moving car it flies really nice and shatters into a million pieces!

Metallic excellence........2006-12-22

This is the first album I bought by In Flames, and after going back and buying every album that went before (and since), I have to say this is my favorite. Actually, this is one of my all time favorite albums period. I like pretty much like everything they have ever done, but this one really stands out for me. I don't understand the negativity surrounding this album by long time "fans", I really can't see where they are coming from. This album is truly a masterpiece.

Good, Different, Experimental.......2006-12-04

This was when In Flames got accusations of selling out (Its an up in the air debate with me) however this album is still good and enjoyable. Listen to it for yourself before making a decision on it. Its deff more experimental than their other work and most certainly not as good however RRTR is still good music and I deff enjoyed it. Some of the tracks are weak and others very strong. Their newer work doesnt have the Flow of Jester Race or Whoracle and neither does it have their mood, it doesnt have the intensity and consistancy of Colony and Clayman however it is In Flames and still good music just different. More poppy and more of a clean and processed production. Its deff more atmospheric and more vocal focused then their earlier work but still good just not great.

thats how i can sum it up. it may not sound like whoracle but i still love this record. some of my fav. songs are on here. they got alot of crap for this one(and the next one) but i loved it. they tried something new. not st. anger new(thank god!) but its a new sound none the less. and it works.

Experimental, underated, different........2006-12-04

First off let me say just listen to this album yourself from a friend or through buying it or w/e before making an opinion about it. This album along with Reroute to Remain took a lot of trash from old school In Flames fans who felt that In Flames sold out with this album. While I cannot deny the elements of sell out within their newer music neither can I deny the blant fact that they were looking to make something new not Jester Race 2 or Clayman 2 and also they went somewhat experimental. This album is most certainly not like their older work yes melody is still here for sure but the instrumentals have taken a backseat I would say or sort of share the spotlight with Anders vocals. The album has some killer tracks and then lacks in others. Listen for yourself one things for certain its a change from their older work but it is still deff good music however deff not something I listen to a whole lot. But still good the polished production is at times very very lovely and at other times just annoying. I personally liked the album and thought it was good. Its just not a mind blowing classical like their earlier releases. Lets leave it at this, In Flames will be remembered for Jester Race, Whoracle and not this album but that doesnt mean this isnt still good music.

A few faults makes this a really annoying album.......2006-11-13

Even though I gave this a 4/5, there are a few things that overall make this album weak. One, on this album almost every song sounds the same. For example, Borders & Shading and Superhero of the Computer Rage both are structured in this order: Verse, Prechorus, Verse, Prechorus, Chorus, Verse, Prechorus, Chorus, Bridge, Prechorus, Chorus with a pitch raised to a C#. The guitars have an artificially produced sound to them; nothing like the previous albums Reroute to Remain and Clayman and the most recent Come Clarity in which the production was excellent. Also, almost all the songs are B flat based. In other words, the songs sound the same. On the good side, there are really catchy songs and still some specks of Melodic Death Metal, but there is also some techno and Jonathan Davis. I would reccommend this album to anybody who likes their most recent albums, but you aren't that likely to like it. How bout "I'd reccomend this to anybody who likes nu metal because this is 5 times as better as any nu metal out." I would because this album is not nu metal (along with RTR). Nu metal is hip hop influenced and this is still melodic death metal influenced. This is the final thing I will address. So I leave you to do whatever you want; or click no under is this review helpful. Because I know that half the people who will read this will think this album sucks. Peace.

3.5 NOT AT THEIR BEST..........2006-10-12

Ok, ok...I've been following In Flames since their very very (VERY!) first efforts. I came across "Lunar Strain" back in 1994 and since then I couldn't miss any of their releases 'till "Clayman". Haven't listened to "Reroute..." yet...but...the hell, this is not In Flames! They were meant to play something different! Let me explain better...if I'll be able to (lol)!!! Even if I do love a certain kind/genre of Metal I do not believe in clichè, I understand and agree in testing something new, as I play in a band I must admit it's quite easy to get bored playing every day the same stuff! Nevertheless, this album sounds to me a little...plain. I do not want to be completely negative 'coz on the whole I'd put "Soundtrack" in my personal archive of good music. "Friend", "Like You Better Dead" and "In Search For I" are very nice songs, anyway I cannot name a real high tune :-(
If you already are into In Flames you should know what to do...
If you're looking for a new band to listen to I'd suggest to buy "Whoracle" or "Jester Race" (...death metal, more into classic metal stuff) or "Come Clarity" if you need another masterpiece of music (as the ones named before)with a touch of modern metal vein in add. CIAO

An Elite Album.......2006-08-12

If you are new to In Flames, please do not pay any attention whatsoever to the negative reviews. This is an amazing album, an effort equalled only by Reroute To Remain and The Jester Race.
Every song presented here is very strong, without a single weak point. In Flames continue to use their ability to write albums songs that do not all sound the same, and it keeps the disc worth many repeat listens. After the somewhat bland Clayman, the band curved the sound in a darker, more intricate direction, as displayed on RTR and STYE. Electronics are more apparent here, as well as chunkier, less solo-oriented riffs. Another point is brought herein - the solos here are played slower, simpler, and with far more taste and emotion as on Clayman, Colony, etc. The songs are very memorable, each containing many moments of chilling soundscapes.
This is quite likely In Flames's best album. It is a shame that they decided to curve back toward previous days with Come Clarity.
If you like this, you will also find much joy in Reroute To Remain and The Jester Race.

Not that bad..........2006-07-27

But its not great either. In Flames have long been known as one of the originators of the famous Gothenburg melodic death metal genre, along with Dark Tranquillity and At the Gates. In Flames have a very respectable catalog spanning many years. While most fans dismiss this album as absolute garbage, this release is not really that bad. Sure, we do not have twin guitar dueling solos and the riffs and melodies that made Whoracle and the Jester Race classics, but we do have interesting music.

Anders Fridén and Co. start things out with the song F(r)iend. The riffs are great here, but it does remind the listener of a more modern style song then the swedish melo-metal. The riffing is fast and Anders growls are awesome. 'The Quiet Place' has catchy synth and has some groove present in it. The chorus sounds like something one might hear on a hard-rock radio station. 'Touch of Red' is another catchy song that has a trendy chorus. My personal favorite song on the album is 'My Sweet Shadow.' The melody is wonderful and In Flames closed with this song when I saw them live this past January, in early 2006.

In Flames can still write great music (if you don't believe me, pick up their newest release Come Clarity) and Anders vocals are not that bad. Personally, I like his vocals better here then on Come Clarity. He is utilizing his singing voice, but I must say his vocals sound nothing like his vocals portrayed on Whoracle or The Jester Race. In Flames were very experimental with this release and it probably did not work out the way they wanted it to. But this album is certainly not horrible. Some songs are very enjoyable and hearing them live is just as fun as hearing the songs 'Jotun' or 'Moonshield' live. Newcomers, please do not start here, start early and make your way forward. In Flames are a respectable band. While this may not be at the top of my list, it is definately not a horrible album. In Flames still do a great job playing live concerts.

It's big and it's terrible!.......2005-07-28

Sorry, I couldn't resist using Raymond Burr's awful line. But this soundtrack is indeed truly AWESOME! One of the best things about Godzilla is the music, which was so distinctive and so haunting that it made us overlook the cheesy special effects. More than any of his 1950's monster contemporaries, Godzilla's soundtrack gave the big guy a soul that spooked children and stayed with them long after they grew up into sensible adults. I still get chills whenever I hear those school girls singing the Prayer for Peace. Akira Ifukube was a genius whose music was an apt coronation for the King of the Monsters!

Great Addition to Your Collection.......2004-10-07

If you're a fan of the original Godzilla movie, American version or Japanese, both contain the same music. This CD is a dream come true for Godzilla fans in the U.S. The music sounds great, doesn't sound aged at all, but still old fashioned, which is good. Track 20, is probably the saddest and most moving song I have ever heard, long song also, 6:20, but it's worth the listen. Akira Ifukube is definatly the master when it comes to kaiju film music. The extra tracks are a treat as well, they are just the film versions of some of the songs, but still great. If you want to make your kaiju collection grow, then this is worth it, or if you just like orchestral music, then it's worth the wait for shipping. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Origato, Ikufube-san!.......2004-08-24

This remastered CD of Akira Ikufube's original Godzilla score is an excellent addition to the fiftieth anniversary celebrations for the film series. Ikufube is constantly mentioned in discussions of the Godzilla films, and it's easy to see why: he always treated his subject seriously, even when the movie itself didn't.

Surprisingly, the music doesn't feel terribly dated. You can often pinpoint the age of a movie soundtrack pretty accurately, particularly 1950s sci-fi movies (the theramin is usually the giveaway). I don't think this is because Ikufube continued to score the Godzilla series well into the 1990s. Rather, I think his classical music training allowed him to create a score that was not influenced by the sounds of the time. "Classic" is an overused adjective, but it's appropriate for a score that feels relatively modern after 50 years.

The one thing that does date the music is the quality of the recording. It's in mono, of course, and the music is not as crisp as you would hear in a contemporary recording. Still, the sound remaster is impressive considering the age of the original recordings.

It's also interesting to listen to this score in comparison to Ikufube's later music for the series. The music is extremely somber, in contrast to the more adventurous tone that Ikufube created for later films. For example, Godzilla's "entry" theme is here (in tracks like "Godzilla's Rampage"), but in a much slower, more menacing version that is barely recognizable as the powerful signature it would become later.

At just over 45 minutes, there's not a lot of music on this CD. And of those, four tracks reprise earlier cues, just rearranging the cues to the order they appeared in the movie. There's also some Godzilla sound effects. Their inclusion is appropriate, considering that Ikufube created them with musical instruments! (This piece of information is one of my favourite tidbits from the liner notes, which are fairly good.)

If you're interested in the familiar Godzilla themes, you're probably better off with a compilation CD of Godzilla music: it will have better sounding recordings, and the themes are more recognizable. But for serious kaiju fans and film score afficianados, this CD is a treat.

On their previous release "Soul Sanctuary", the Hollywood Blue Flames - with acclaimed young blues guitarist Kirk Fletcher ably filling the shoes of the late Hollywood Fats - earned universal rave reviews including a Blues Music Award nomination for 2006 Comeback Album of the Year. "Road To Rio" picks up without skipping a beat, and includes several very welcome extras: two previously un-recorded songs co-written by Hollywood Fats and Al Blake that exhibit the roots-rock direction the band was just beginning to explore before Fats' untimely passing; collaborations with Fabulous Thunderbirds frontman Kim Wilson, as well as fellow West Coast blues guitar pioneer Junior Watson on 3 bonus tracks; and an entire cd of previously un-released vintage live performances by the original Hollywood Fats Band, including guest appearances by Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson and legendary blues shouter Roy Brown! Also on board is a rare vocal performance by the one and only Michael "Hollywood Fats" Mann.

The music contained on "Road To Rio" stands on its own as some of the most enjoyable blues and roots music to be released in recent memory. Additionally, the previously unheard live recordings on the second disc "Larger Than Life" by the Hollywood Fats Band, make this album an important and historic document of musical genius whose likes we will not see again.

It would have been better ............2007-03-12

....an AC Cobra than a Ferrari! Alternatively, a Ford Mustang. Anyway, if you liked the Hollywood Fats Band, in "Larger than life" you will find some jawdropping guitar-playing from the late Hollywood Fats. Don't miss this unreleased live recordings. "Road to Rio" is less impressive, yet the more you will listen to it, the more you will enjoy it. Indeed, not the usual "jump blues" stuff from top Blues musicians in their own right. Five stars widely deserved.

Love This Stuff.......2006-11-02

Some folks may not see the value in this kind of smokey blues music but I just love it. The guitar work, the keyboards, vocals, rhythm section -everything about it - just wonderful. If you have any interest in the blues and in a modern interpretation of old blues, you should try this CD. It may not be for everyone but I really think you will enjoy it if you give it try.

Infectious music with no cure.......2006-09-09

I want to play cuts from these 2 discs and their other CD, SOUL SANCTUARY on a daily basis. I guess I'll be over it in another 2 weeks, once it runs its course.

Tastes are different. My favorites, if you want to sample from these 2 discs, but remember the samples don't necessarily give the tune a chance to show how it will really get into you, are:

Cleanhead Blues ( Sexy, slinky saxophone)

The only player I had heard before was Kirk "Eli" Fletcher with Kim Wilson in person and recorded. I like his guitar playing and Kim Wilson's voice(and harp). I think this would be a welcome addition to your collection.

road to rio is the best album of 2006.not just blues album,but,
of any genre this 2 cd is a milestone in the evolution of blues
as the bedrock for all other american styles of music.the blue
flames cd ads an edge to there music not yet tread upon.the live
fats cd defies description.having known fats during the wonderbread years in the 1970's on and having been close friends
with Al blake for 40 years this cd makes the hair stand up on
my whole body.don't miss this blockbuster 2cd set.
