Customer Reviews:
Interesting..........2006-08-24
Cherry Poppin' Daddies first album and all I can say is funk. Yes there are some swing songs, but the album leens more towards funk. The only swing songs on here are the ones on their greatest hits album 'Zoot Suit Riot.' Overall the album is good, if you are open minded and curious seeing where the Cherry Poppin' Daddies came from. Yes the lyrics are sexual and comical, but with the music they play it fits right.
Sounds like: Royal Noise Brigade, Aquabats, Reel Big Fish
One of the best albums ever........2004-05-17
I don't know how many hundreds of times I have listened to the album and it still holds up as one of my favorites. The first time I heard any of their songs was a live performance at Speedy O' Tubs in Bellingham, Washington (probably 1990 or 1991). This is an incredible band and as great as this album is the Daddies are even better live. One thing though, this is not a pure Swing style album, it is more a cross between swing, punk and rock, add to that some incredible lyrics from Steve Perry and you end up with "Ferociously Stoned." If you are a fan of pure Swing you will probably be disappointed by parts of the album but if you are a fan of really good music that combines various styles and doesn't follow some boring formula then this is for you. While some are at times offended by some of the lyrics I find them to be very honest and often humorous, you really come away understanding just how disturbed Steve Perry's childhood must have been after listening to "Drunk Daddy". Russ Meyer fans will especially enjoy "Flovilla Thatch vs. the Virile Garbage Man." This CD deserves a place in any true music lover's collection.
if I could have only on cd.............2001-12-09
This would be it.... I bought my original copy at one of their shows in bellingham,Wa.... All I can say is... if you don't own it yet... spend the money...
Greatest Album Ever.......2001-07-10
How can anyone knock this album. it is only the greatest album recorded by any artist. i mean the funky groves of Diabolic Tastemaker and Dirty Mutha Fuzz (my personal favourite) plus the swing tunes of Drunk Daddy and Master and Slave make this THE best CD. of course some people are adverse to the lyrics in the songs, but i say you guys are just soft. the lyrics rule, and the songs are even better. so all you CPD haters, get lost and all you CPD lover embrace this CD as their personal best achievement.
EVERY SONG ON FEROCIOUSLY STONED IS EXELLENT!.......1999-09-07
EVERY SONG ON FEROCIOUSLY STONED IS EXELLENT!
The Cherry Poppin' Daddies are fireing up another album soon, tenatively titled "Soul Caddilac". Will it be a swing record like ZSR was? Sort of. Swing has always been a part of CPD's music. Will it be like "Ferociously Stoned"? Sort of.
Everyone must realize that ZSR is a collection of "swingin hits" and is a collection of songs from earler CD's. Zoot Suit Riot does not indicate the extent of the band's music, or the scope of their style! (Look for a twist of soul on the new album.)
The only thing one can expect when hearing a CPD album for the first time is: some songs will be rock/swing/punk/power pop or whatever CPD decides to do.
Bottom line: CPD does what they have ALWAYS done, and that is to make Great albums. Accept the Daddies for what they are. Order Ferociously Stoned, and all the other CPD albums and expect only one thing: excellent music.

Old Skool.......2005-10-15
I have MC Shy D's first OG on cassette. In the shower, I still bump his muzik and re-live the old skool lyrics I grew up to when I was a kid. I'm now 24 and still enjoy listening to it as much as I did back then; even more now cuz I can appreciate the muzik and dig what it is he's rappin' about.
Rice Krispies.......2005-09-07
On his Greatest Hits, I was expecting to get a clean CD of songs that were taken from the original masters or reel-to-reels, but the first 9 songs were recorded off of vinyl.
I gave this CD 2 Stars because you can hear all of the snap, crackle, and pops that expect to hear on old records. If this might be a concern of yours, then buyer(s) beware...
Atlanta...that's where I stay....classic rhymes!!!.......2004-07-30
This is a real groundbreaking compilation that every hip hop fan should digest in full. You have to realize that MC SHY D was the first of his kind. You have to credit him with the fact that he was the first rapper from the south who had some originality. His skills, sound and style predated 2 LIVE CREW, of whom were his label mates.
He gives props to Atlanta in his music constantly -- he wasn't from the East Coast, which during his time, dominated hip hop.
It is important to note that his DJ Mike Fresh, had an incredible amount of talent. He could scratch (listen to "I Will Go Off Part II"), throw in dope samples (like in "Atlanta, That's Where I Stay"), and was a huge factor in the success of the immortal jams that this release contain!
The beats have heavy, peppy bass with fast 16th note hi-hat taps, almost like a pre-booty bass feel. SHY D himself usually sounds like he's about 16 years old.
MC SHY D, a figure that is often overlooked in the annuals of hip hop, who deserves way more credit than he gets.
Get this release and get educated!!!
I didn't know they were still around--I knew them back when!.......1999-12-07
I just gave the CD three stars as an even review; I've never heard a recording of theirs. Funny thing, though: Back in 1988 or '89, I met them (there were two of them). I lived in Atlanta, and my mother's friend and roommate was either dating one of them or good friends with one of them. Anyhow, they came over to the house one evening, and they met my mother and I. I, about four or five at the time, had no idea who they were (Musically, I still don't--I just looked their names up on a whim after remembering old songs I liked; I had no idea they had enough songs for a "Greatest Hits" CD). I had never heard their music (although they brought their album and may have autographed it), and didn't care to. I didn't like rap, and I guess I had my head on straight for a kid, because I still don't and most likely never will. But they were very nice guys. I remember I was reading my favorite children's book when they arrived, it was called "Just Like Me," and about a pair of twin sisters. And I remember while one talked to my mother and her friend, the other came over to the table and read the book aloud with me. Such nice people; I'm glad to hear they're still doing their thing.

Quiet coolness.......2004-07-15
I say "quiet music" because it seems like even the more energetic songs on this album are subdued. But this album will grow on you before you know it. This music, if hard to define, is definitely original. Definitely a nice fit in the eighteenth street lounge label. I call it dub'n'bass. Check it out, you will dig.
I tried to write this review without using a single cliche.......2001-05-16
I bought this album because I'm a fan of Thievery Corporation and their label, Eighteenth St. Lounge. I'd heard a couple of songs of Thunderball from other ESL compilations and was sure that I'd like this album. I took it home, played it and was disappointed. As far as I was concerned, these guys were blatantly pimping themselves as the 21st century version of John Barry (cliché spy reference) by naming themselves "Thunderball" and giving their opening song a title like "Hijack." I found this album's sound too eclectic and filed it away in my collection.
However, I was wrong. This album rewards repeated listening. It's eclecticism is it's strength. This album goes from up-tempo (This Girl) to down-tempo (The Moon, the Sky), from Dub, Drum `n' Bass (Selector) to Trip Hop (Sid's Mellow Trip)(sorry, gratuitous genre references) and for most of the album, somewhere in-between all of these and other categories. This album lacks the obvious hooks of other electronica artists--it's breakbeat lite and uses female vocals sparingly (This Girl, Sirocco). It works on a subtle level more appropriate for a near future spy thriller soundtrack a la James Bond (sorry).
Thunderball, I believe, has a talent level comparable to label-mates Thievery Corporation. Listen to "Ambassadors of Style" as a soundtrack and not an album and you might hear what I hear--music for an imagined film.
My opinion of Thunderball hasn't changed--I still think they're pimping to do a James Bond Soundtrack. However, I no longer believe that's a bad thing.
I wouldn't really call this drum and bass.......2001-02-23
Although a lot of the songs on this have drum and bass beats and mixwell with drum and bass songs, a lot of them have hip hop beats and there is even some down-tempo lounge. It's a dope lp and the songs all are super good, but this isn't a strictly drum and bass album. If you've heard theivery corporation, this is a lot like them. They have a more laid back approach to drum and bass and the whole electronic scene. They do blend in a lot of different styles like funk and reggae but the songs are deffinately not going in the direction of "electronic" sounding electronic music. To listen to, this whole release is excellent, all styles covered and done well. Female vocalists to crazy jamaican rappers to reflective moods all in a well rounded release in the tradition of the 18th street lounge style.
perfect.......2000-08-28
for everybody out there who are sick of clubs and the ate ups buy this album. I think this ablum is more for the living room rather than the dance floor. for the first time that i have heard; thunderball offer up a delicious mind racing album full of tight rythms, deep bass hits , and soothing melodies. just incredible. perfect
Drum & Bass for Friends and Cocktails.......2000-07-21
With hardstep so dominant in the d&b world right now, it is refreshing to hear breakbeats and bass with some sense of subtlety. The most rockin' track on this album (and the initial reason I bought it) is the collision of d&b and dancehall on track 5. However, that track is actually atypical of the rest of the material; instead it ranges from gentle d&b to down-tempo, with some dub-ish elements and pop-ish vocals also entering the mix. The result isn't entirely fresh but by-and-large satisfying. If you need a break from d&b a la Dieselboy (respect going out all the same!), and need an alternative to LTJ Bukem, give this a try.

Product Description
Mama Kangaroos features twenty emerging and established female artists from Philadelphia performing the songs of painter Don Van Vliet, the man better known as the legendary musician Captain Beefheart. The genre-hopping set covers material spanning the entirety of the Captain's 17 year recording career, while showcasing a diversity of talent and style that once again proves Philly to be one of the country's most vital music centers.
Customer Reviews:
False alarm.......2005-08-25
I don't know why I was under the impression that "Mama Kangaroos" was a choir and that "Philly Women Sing Captain Beefheart" would be a cappella... anyway - that is 0% the case.
I was terrified when I started listening to this disc because having listened through all of Captain Beefheart's discography hundreds of times, having read positive reviews of this album, and having appreciated other tributes like "Fast 'N' Bulbous" and the reunited Magic Band, I expected something quite different.
The first three tracks are driven by programmed drums. Credits are given for "remix," "drum machines" and "beats & programming." I'd expected something much rawer and something performed more in the spirit of Captain Beefheart's voice and/or rhythmic approach.
After the exhausting experience of having listened through the first three tracks, a little sunshine shined through the dark clouds; "Run Paint Run Run" at least had "real" instruments - not just keyboards and drum machines, but the lead vocalist didn't at all capture any essence of Beefheart's voice or timing, and occasionally, perhaps due to a lack of interest in the genius of the composer, lyrics are wrong.
"Abba Zaba" by "Voices of Africa" got me a bit more interested in the recording though. Now it finally started to sound like Don Van Vliet's music. A group of five female voices accompanied by sitar, mandolin and African percussion gave the song a nice flavor.
But the song ended and the clouds blocked out the light; "Sugar Bowl," which originally was a tune from the "Tragic Band" era, has been given a redneck-hippie feel. It's performed on banjo, fiddle and upright bass, and while the idea of such a line-up may sound interesting to some, don't bother to get your hopes up, 'less y'all be heavily into bluegrass.
There's nothing special about the performances on "Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles," "My Head is My Only House Unless It Rains" or "Crazy Little Thing" either - unfortunately they're just a bunch of mainstream performances that are far from the level of performance of the original recordings. For some reason "My Head" has also been given a Texas-feel by lap steel and violin.
Then comes the real tragedy - something that probably would offend Don Van Vliet if he ever heard it - "Lick My Decals Off Baby..." The song has been raped and abused by the group "Kiss Kiss Kill." Not one note of the original music is played by the barely mediocre trio of guitar, bass and drums that performs the song. The music reflects in no way upon the Captain Beefheart tune "Lick My Decals Off Baby." The only similar element is the words, but that's all - the melody is also new, and it really sounds like a cheap parody... and the show goes on that way; the subsequent tracks have also been heavily modified up until "When I See Mommy I Feel Like a Mummy," which instrumentally would be recognizable as the tune it's supposed to sound like, but it's not a very interesting listen throughout - it runs for 8 minutes and 50 seconds.
"I'm Glad" was, of course, no typical Magic Band tune, but it has been further transformed into a pathetic run-of-the-mill tune that you wouldn't be surprised hearing on some light AOR station.
"Ashtray Heart" is performed by an all-female rock group, which you can't help being reminded of the Courtney Love group "Hole" by. It sounds like the tune had been recorded in a huge hall before sound check, and the extremely punked up version of "Frying Pan" is not much different - I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I heard it...so I did neither.
"Plastic Factory" does not remind of the music of the original recording, "Orange Claw Hammer" is another "yee-haw" hillbilly tune...not worth comments...and "Well" has been given an ugly mess of reed instruments, guitar, percussion and samples, though originally recorded a cappella.
I don't know if so much of the music has been rewritten both instrumentally and vocally due to a low production budget (not enough money to buy rights,) or if this actually is the idea of a homage to Don Van Vliet by a group of people as big as the group of people involved in this project, but I'd be surprised if this album, in less than 9/10 cases, is not a huge disappointment to real Captain Beefheart fans (who might have expected reflections of his genius.) People who enjoy listening to pop-radio and/or are fans of some of these bands might enjoy these takes on these Beefheart tunes, but it is nevertheless scary to think that this album might be somebody's introduction to his music.
What is the point in trying to make his music more accessible by forcing it to sound commercial, when what Van Vliet wanted to do was to break up the catatonic state?
I understand of course, that this is not an attempt to copy his musical personality, but in order to celebrate it or make a homage to a living genius, this is not the way to go.
Though wry and awkward (with the exception of the only real high-light, "Abba Zaba,") you have to respect someone wanting to acknowledge people about Don Van Vliet's music and trying to keep it alive, so 2/5 stars is pretty fair for this album.
a simple yet inspired concept.......2005-08-09
To the diehard Beefheart fan it would be easy to dismiss this set as travesty and pure novelty, however this misses the point. Most of the reworkings on this set bring out nuances of the originals that are easily overlooked. For me the delight has been listening back to the originals through the different perspective offered by these 'cover versions'
Inevitably some pieces are less inspired than others, but overall there are enough highlights to please all but the most rabid of Beefheart fanatics
'Plastic Factory' as THE seminal piece of garage rock anyone?
awesome tribute .............2005-07-21
........to cap'n beefhart as well as to the philly music scene. The breadth of female talent in this city (and showcased on this album) is quite impressive.
well produced and very very good listening!
A tribute album, yet much more.......2005-06-19
Mama Kangaroo's is no collection of basement tapes, but a very smoothly produced set of fully realized tracks. A well-thought out selection of Beefheart songs, performed with skill and commitment by a grab-bag of female (well, mostly, sort of) artists from Philadelphia's often underrated music scene.
In style, they range from folk to funk to straight blues, to the spooky spoken rhythms of Apes-Ma (my first favorite). The best of these covers take Beefheart's songs in new directions, revealing his beautiful songwriting in a way that's more accessible than the originals but takes nothing away from them. There are few weak spots. The songs are respected at the same time that they are used as artistic vehicles for a new generation of artists with their own visions and styles, and that's what makes a tribute album more than a bunch of covers.
This is an excellent collection that only fails to get a full five-star rating because it is, after all, a collection and not a single conceptual whole by one artist. Highly recommended for Beefheart aficionados and novices alike.

Album Description
The Lovelies are the perfect marriage of loud guitars and velcro-strength melodies. As one fan described them: "...they have L7's crunchy guitars mixed with the hooks of Elastica." In a world dominated by testosterone-driven guy rock, these girls bring the noise and the melody that's been sorely missing on the radio and in your local stadium. Fans of the Breeders, and the aforementioned Elastica, will take to this CD with a vengeance. We're sure of it! There's rockers, ballads and anthems galore on this CD. One listen will make a believer and fan out of you.
