Album Description

You gotta believe...that's the message from Antigone Rising-five women whose Lava debut, From the Ground Up hits that place in your heart that Springsteen, U2, Aerosmith, and the greatest of the great bands reached in their young and hungry days. You know how rare this is. It's not just about writing terrific songs and playing them with a passion kindled through hundreds of nights in tiny, packed clubs until it's ready to blow through the roof and into the sky for the whole world to hear. Though, of course, Antigone Rising have done that.

I personally love the raw, live sound. These girls are amazing and really talented. I could listen to this CD forever.

5 out of 5 stars WOW........2006-09-05

I worked at Starbucks and we played this CD, among others, non-stop and I've yet to grow tired of it. I've purchased their "From The Ground Up" and I am immensely satisfied. Every song is really good, though one in particular doesn't rub me right. "She Lived Here" is kinda weird to me, but that doesn't make it a horrible song. It's just one I tend to skip as I listen to the CD. *shrug* I love this album and I don't think enough people know about it.

2 out of 5 stars Shouldn't Have Been Me.......2006-08-21

My mistake. I had only heard "Should've Been The One" which I thought sounded very good. That, however, was the only song produced in the studio and unfortunately the only song I liked enough to justify the purchase. The rest of the songs are live, apparently recorded at a small venue, if you can judge by the applause. Like I said...my fault. Not saying any of the songs are bad. Maybe more of them will grow on me. Just not what I expected. Moral: it pays to listen to most of a CD before you buy it.(duh) You never know what you're gonna get.

5 out of 5 stars Completely Satisfied.......2006-08-03

I purchased a "used" but never opened CD from this seller and I am completely satisfied with my purchase. The CD came to me still in the shrink wrap and it plays like a brand new CD. I would definately purchase from this seller again!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2006-07-14

This is the best girl group, if not the best group going today. They produce hit after hit. The only challenge as far as listening to AR is to find a song that you do NOT like.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

    5 out of 5 stars Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2001-12-25

Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!

    5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars A valiant effort.......2006-12-31

The scariest thing about this CD is that it works. Perhaps more well than some think it should. Seriously, I love the concept, and I can't find very much in the way of negative things to say about it except for one thing--one impotant thing: the mixing sounds terrible. Each mash-up has amazing potential to be a fixture on my playlist were it not for the terrible unevenness of the CD's overall sound; some tracks are pumped beyond reason with bass, some are completely lacking in midrange, while others are hissing acid needles with high-end. Several of the tracks sound like at least one of the songs, the rap or the rock, was pulled from a badly-compressed MP3. For its ambition and exciting textures, the end result sounds disappointingly amateurish in the way of production. Be warned: if you care about your ears, you're probably going to have to rip this CD to your hard drive and remaster it yourself before really enjoying it. But if you've already blown a ton of frequencies right out of your ears, I think you'll love this CD right out of the case.

    4 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-12-11

It's a good album. when rock is mixed with rap its bound to be good. so buy it. worth a listen. btw the dmx and the nirvana song does work.

    4 out of 5 stars Awesome Mixtape.......2006-07-26

The only reason I got this CD is because I heard that Mike Shinoda was on it. I bought it off of eBay. The 1st time I popped it in, I didn't like it. I thought that DJ Vlad and Roc Raida were fools for butchering rock songs with rap verses. But, the more I listened to it, the more I realized the great blend of rock and hip-hop. Some of the tracks don't really work together, like DMX rapping over "Smells Like Teen Spirit". That one just doesn't work. Overall, this is good. This kicks Linkin Park's butt. if you are an LP fan, BUY IT. If you like both rock and rap, I highly recommend it.

    Product Description

Nerdcore Rising is the feverishly anticipated debut album from MC Frontalot. Alas, it is not the tonic to make that fever subside; each listening ignites further desperation for Front's inimitable dorkery. Includes six brand new tracks and ten re-recorded fan favorites, featuring the beatwork of Baddd Spellah, Doctor Popular, and DJ Earflaps, the exceptional funksomeness of Front's studio/touring band (Gm7, Black Lotus, and The Categorical Imperative), and guest appearances by Jesse Dangerously and MC Stephen Hawking. Awarded thirteen out of ten stars by Math Error Quarterly.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting style..........2007-04-12

I didn't love every song, but they are all pretty good. There are 4 or 5 songs that I liked a lot: Nerdcore Rising, Pr0n Song, Message No. 419 are some. I might buy another album.

    4 out of 5 stars Updates aren't always a good thing.......2007-01-22

I always wanted to give Penny Arcade a big kiss and hug for introducing me to Mr. Frontalot. How cool it was to hear respectable rhymes rooted so deeply in geek culture. Where else will you hear a deftly crafted tune that lampoons Star Wars ubergeeks and giggles at internet fetish porn, all at the same time? The spearhead of the "nerdcore" genre is where. A great deal of Frontalot's appeal, for me, was the picture of one guy, sitting at his PC, churning out music that was actually good enough to give some current acts a run for their money. Thing is, part of that appeal also laid in how....real it sounded. Raw, like it wasn't over-produced, upbeat and catchy. Then came the CD....

Proud to support a great artist, and thrilled to have all of my favorite tunes on an official disc, I popped it in and said...."Huh?" What's with all the remakes? Songs that had the cool vibe of a geek just being cool are now very laid back, almost boring. Instead of being fun, they're now "arty" (for lack of a better term), with the upbeat backgrounds replaced with a mellow, retooled sound. Where did the fun go? Why do the original rhymes sound so out of place in some of the new mixes? I haven't touched the disc since. Don't get me wrong. He still fronts the most, and I support him every step of the way. But, the CD is going to stay in its case. I'll be spinning the burn of the original songs instead.

If you don't know the original stuff, try the CD. You might dig it. If you are an old fan, you might want to sample some of the remixed stuff first. See what you think. Actually, get the CD anyway. Show the guy some support. Just be ready to download the classics from his site, if the new sound doesn't strike you.

5 out of 5 stars MC Frontalot, you're so hardcore!.......2007-01-15

If you don't know how awesomely funny MC Frontalot is, you're really missing out. And if you *do* know how awesome he is and you haven't bought this disc yet, shame on you! Don't you know he needs you to buy his CD so he can buy food?

5 out of 5 stars The revolution has begun.......2007-01-11

For too long "hip-hop" has been polluting the airwaves with misogyny and the glamorising of violence and anti-intellectualism. There was a time when rap/hip-hop was about something other than "bitches" and "bling". There was a time when it had a message and an intelligence behind it. But that time has gone.

Thankfully nerdcore; the "ironic juxtaposition of two very disparate cultures"* has arrived and maybe just maybe will "rise up and become elevated". And hopefully it will have the same effect on so called "gansta-rap" as "Ggrunge" did to "cock-rock". That is to destroy it! Or at least poke it with irony until it appeared ridiculous. Unfortunately that may never happen because even if nerdcore breaks into the main stream, the fact that it is being led by mainly white rappers will prevent it having and serious effect on mainstream rap. So fingers crossed some awesome black nerdcore rapper comes along very soon.

But until then anyone who enjoys the vibe of rap/hip-hop but dislikes the content of the current blend should enjoy this. Especially if you have geek tendencies. MC Frontalot brings humour, politics and intelligence to rap in a way that few have ever done before. The god father of nerdcore? Well he coined the term at least. This is excellent stuff.

Anyone who enjoys this should check out MC Lars next.

    * Quote from Weird Al Yankovic

5 out of 5 stars godfather of nerdcore.......2006-10-20

"Never has a little boy sat so alone at his computer and busted out such inconceivably thick rhymes. MC Frontalot has tapped the zeitgeist. It is with good reason that he is so very famous and rich." - Noam Chomsky

Well, maybe not but Frontalot is truly fun stuff that speaks to me. I've been sliding off music for the past couple of years. I dip my toes in every once in a while but nothing's really been exciting. Not in the way that the Pixies or Joy Division or the Police captured my imagination. Then, one day, I stumbled across a mention of Frontalot on slashdot. Looking him up, I became immediately addicted. Sad as it may seem, the material really resonates. I struggle a bit using that word, because you should only used in conjunction with life-threatening events masquerading as nostalgia. Yet, there it is. I gamed. I made fun of the lesser geeks who (just) played Magic. I recall my parents' disco tendencies. I had an Atari 800XL. I'm friends with grown adults who inhabit sci-fi conventions. I've lusted after goth girls, and it's possible that I've downloaded porn sometime in my life. So yeah, his stuff resonates. Just remember - he's not parody, just really funny.

(Footnote: I don't lump frontalot in the same league as Joy Division et al, but I do include him in the group of bands I've emotionally reacted to.)

Great harmonies, great lead vocals, but most of all it simply fills up your soul, I can't say why, it just does, to me that's what great music is all about. No need to intellectualize just sit back and enjoy their gifts.

2 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding.......2005-08-30

One reviewer compared them to Springsteen or U2 in thier "early, hungry days" (which moved me to post my own review). What??? How about the more realistic comparison to Wilson Phillips, Dixie Chicks, or She-Daisy. These are talented women, they're cute (so they'll do the video circuit well), and they have nice harmonies - like a million other bands! They're not rare, or unique, or innovative. They play nice songs nicely.

I wanted to like them, really. I'm always looking for musicians who offer something unique (try Ilse DeLange if you like country - she's Dutch). But they're just what you'd expect from Starbucks - simple, mainstream performances that make for nice background music. And thier melodies are not at all memorable or interesting.

So they'll have a following, and do some gigs, but they won't have any impact on the music world. You might like thier CD - like the other gal-bands they have nice vocals and are very listenable. But they're easily replaced with the next "country" band that does the same.

5 out of 5 stars Stealth hits with broad appeal.......2005-07-02

Like others I got turned on to it from the Starbucks connection; whatever song they had on grabbed me as I walked in the door and I had to ask "who IS that?" Bought the CD. (Last time that instant attraction happened to me, other than my sweetie, was the Hear Music mix volume that is all the road music, the one with "Babylon" and Emmie Lou Harris on it.)

Anyway, first listen at home of Antigone Rising, I wasn't so sure for a moment. Sounded a bit rough from the live recording. But played it again right after and the rhythms, the voices, the tunes and the lyrics just clicked all at once. This group can sound country or alternative or womyn and the songs ALL SAY something meaningful. I felt their New York Village bar vibe right along with the twang. Cassidy has a unique nuanced voice and the instrumental lines are classy. So I've played it regularly in the car ever since. Today I transported with me my two grandaughters ages 3 and 6, and they were singing along with it and humming and clapping their hands. The little one yelled and clapped with the audience at the end of the CD, too. Cute and a good sign that this phenom group has VERY broad appeal. I'm ordering it for my sister, just divorced. She needs to hear "I am a Diamond." Maybe you do, too.

4 out of 5 stars Fabulous Females Rock!.......2005-07-01

I walked past this cd several times at my local Starbucks before actually purchasing it a week ago. Now it's the only thing I'm listening to in my car. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. My favorite songs are include "Don't Look Back", "Michael". My least favorite is "Happy Home." I would not describe them as country at all. These girls are all about rock with amazing harmonies and melodies. I love musicians that write their own material and this band delivers!

    Album Description

Hilton Valentine, guitarist in the Animals' classic 1963-1966 linup, and auteur of those arpeggios that gave the band their massive "House of the Rising Sun" breakthrough, recorded a solo album, All in Your Head, for Capitol in 1970. There's no sophomore slump evident on Valentine's new solo set where he's billed as Skiffledog, both to ward off inferences that this is some nod to Animals nostagia, and to salute the event that made him take up guitar in 1956, when the Lonnie Donegan-centered skiffle craze laid the foundation for the British Invasion. Valentine's never been entirely copacetic with the horns & strings cat clothes Capitol layered over his minimalist folk songs of 1970, to tart them up for the style-conscious airwaves, so he's (re-)undressed two of those tunes, "Run Run Run" and "Peace" for the new set, and they just gleam in the nakedness of Hilton's acoustic guitar and his somewhat-Donovan-like vocals. Two songs which directly address the fog of! class war that produced these intense ravers from the North - Valentine's own "River Tyne," and his cover of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" - are hauntingly compelling in their understated anger, in their invocation of that same coal-dusted heart that drove the Animals' best songs. But Valentine's his own man now, per the "Looking To The Sun" existential credo that opens the album and frees the Skiffledog from the "House" that once contained him. Vintage liner photos of Valentine's earliest gigs polish off this prime package. - Richard Riegel Harp Magazine

5 out of 5 stars Hilton's CD is a breath of fresh air!.......2005-08-18

I finally, gladly, bought this album after a long period of saving my pennies and I am not disappointed. I admit, I'm a big fan of the Animals and Hilton's guitar playing but I'll try my best not to be biased. The production is clear and crisp and Hilton Valentine's vocals are as soft and melodic as gently buffeted meadow. Every piece on the album stands alone and is lyrically strong, and the instrumentals are also extremely captivating. I could listen to this for hours (and have been since it arrived in the post) and it's a real breath of fresh air when considering the way the bulk of music is these days; mass produced, regurgitated, reengineered, remixed and getting mighty stale. It also goes to show that an older style of music can still be highly listenable without being mawkish, pretentious or embarassing. I think this album will appeal to all ages, especially to those with an ear for real, good, down to earth, honest music and lyrics. If you're into the guitar, you'll love this album, if you're into lyrics, then likewise. I really hope Hilton gets another album out soon and it's great to know he's keeping music real. I highly recommend this album even if you're not really sure about folk or skiffle, or even if you don't know what skiffle is. This is a truly great album. Nice one Hilton!!!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant from beginning to end.......2004-09-04

This CD is amazingly beautiful. I can listen to it over and over and still not have enough. I'm sure you will love it as well. It's music that can make you feel better about yourself and the world.

    5 out of 5 stars What can I say? It's Folk 'N' Skiffle, Mate!.......2004-08-26

This CD has a great deliverance. The songs are fun and full of depth. It will guide you into an era that we cannot visit today. They are wonderfully sung by Hilton Valentine with his soft British accent. I recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates a good sound that is separate from the rest!

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD!.......2004-07-23

The music on this CD is pretty much what the title states. It has some folk and it has some skiffle. House of the Rising Sun was a folk song, so Hilton isn't really that far off from the music that made him a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer. It's fantastic to finally hear the voice behind that famous guitar intro. If you like early Donovan, you should like this CD. He even covers one of his tunes. The best tracks on the CD are Looking To The Sun, Peace and his version of the John Lennon classic, Working Class Hero. My favorite though has to be River Tyne. It has a GREAT solo; arguably the best of his career! Maybe he put that in there just to let us know he hasn't forgotten how to rock!

I've been a Jack Ingram fan before he ever came out with an album. This is my favorite. If you already know Jack's music, pick this one up. The songs are very spirited and perfect for driving or just hanging out. Attawaytogo.
