Two Virginia born military brats and an Atlanta Georgia native make up this Christian/Gospel Hip-Hop Group. Mista AllDat, ENP, and UncleWoo are Tha Kingz Men. An awesome vision that only the creator himself could have joined together. Mista AllDat (aka M.A.D.), and ENP (aka Agent Double Deuce) were secular music makers trying to find a break in the music industry. they were struggling to find connections through various methods while dealing with the complications of everyday life. The two were searching for the purpose god blessed them with life and talent to create such passionate beats and lyrics. Twenty-Four year old Unclewoo, who is also deacon at a local Atlanta Baptist church, worked at a music store where he hooked up with M.A.D. The two waited patiently for god to reveal his plan. In certain tracks such as "Right Beside Me" and "Make A Joyful Noise" you can tell that the members of this group believe strongly in representing Christ to the fullest. ! in the track "Representing Jesus" the three put together solid vocals over a southern underground bounce beat that can be felt by any hip-hop fanatic. It’s full of the phattest hip-hop beats that are laced with the gospel of Christ and the everyday experiences of three emcees destined to bring god’s music to everyone all across the globe.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Soft Sweet Southern Singing.......2007-07-26

LaVere, in this her debut LP, achieves her successful outcome mainly by not overstretching. Her lilting voice and stripped down instrumentation, are the perfect counterpoint to all of the country/pop floating around the airways. Unfortunately, something so real and unadulterated is usually only found on the obscure college station, or public radio airwaves, so if you are lucky enough to stumble across this record, buy it. And her second. And keep an eye out for anything forthcoming by Miss LaVere, as I can't imagine you will be disappointed.

Voice like a Nightingale.......2007-05-17

I love Amy LaVere's voice, well what's not to love? For a tiny thing, she commands a mighty prescence. Dressed in calico and cotton, she holds onto a bass that seems twice her size, until she sings. Her voice carries through the cavern air of din and warren, drifting over the rhythm of stretched skin and steel to caress grateful tympanum.

A thousand years from now alien-human hybrid clone archeologists will look across the vast landscape that was America and imagine the last millenium of growth with congested cities, twisted highways with concrete covering almost every concievable inch of green earth and wonder: what did the land look like?
What were the people like? Who were these ancient Americans? What did the landscape look like to them? Verdant valleys and golden fields, stretching to the horizon, dotted only by blue lakes and crossed by rivers and streams...

YOU WANT THIS ALBUM.......2006-05-27

This album is fantastic! It is such a relief to find a fresh, new sound with all the canned, drum machine, mixed stuff out right now. I met her in TN (she's really sweet) and purchased the album from her and lost it. Quickly, I found I missed it in my collection so bought another. Amy has recorded a great album that nicely blends the blues, country and jazz. What an amazing sound that is perfect for any setting. Her voice transfers the depth of the lyrics and the songs are relatable. The song choices range from the deep (This World is Not My Own) to the whimsy (Sailing??)and it is a purchase I encourage any music fan to make. Best album I've purchased in years.

A Happy Surprise.......2006-05-13

I find myself listening to this one over and over.

I love her voice--somewhere between Lucinda Williams and Kasey Chambers--and the accompanying music adds a dimension often missed by other artists in that it truly complements rather than competes with the vocal.

I was not familiar with this artist until being drawn to the lovely cover art and deciding to take a chance. Glad I did.

The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

Gosh, how there are few albums that take you by surprise, when you know in some peculiar detail the things you are looking for, and find them in strange places and then some more.

I know that I was looking for some honesty, which is a strange occurence in art. By honesty we often mean the lack of irony or ambiguity, any ambivalence or friction. By honesty we often mean soulfulness that is naked and pale, approaching you directly without any preconceptions, without trying to reach your soul too abruptly; it isn't trying, and it lets us make the first steps.

In some ways this is a description of my definition of honesty. To me, honesty is at its purest the sublime form of expression, an integral part of what we find in ourselves. The defining discrepacy here is that I don't need honesty in the performer, I want to find that certain honesty in myself. Following this definition, what I need in the performance is certain space, certain vision, certain ambition. I need my music to reach into all dimensions at once, for it to be so strong I can start seeing myself morphing into the songs themselves.

Now, I was coming for some early Gasparyan hoping I would find something similar to what I feel "I Took Up The Runes" is for Jan Garbarek; an accomplished musician at his best, reaching beyond himself, extending the space around him in ways that must have been unconscious. Must've been, for so remarkable are they. That Garbarek album is amongst my all-time favourites, right there with Peter Gabriel's "Passion" and The Beatles' "Revolver", not to mention the classical sublimes, Rubinstein's "The Chopin Nocturnes", "Preludes" and "Mazurkas", as well as Gould's "Bach: The Art of Fugue", or Pärt's "Alina". These are albums that "contain multitudes"; they are larger than what we can think of them, because whole lives, whole musical strands have been built upon them. They have influenced, just as they have created the whole concept of what it means to be influential by not being overtly self-conscious. Expression because of the need to express, because you cannot no longer contain the feeling in your soul, thus you have to let it out to the world, joining the greater soul.

And of course, then there is the duduk itself. It is a remarkable instrument in my mind, and Gasparyan is a remarkable player. Its sound has all the mournfulness you might expect and wish for, the longing that goes deeper than even the most mournful tenor saxophone could ever go. The depth is amazing, as is the breadth of expression. As for the pieces themselves, these are songs are that have stayed in my ears and on my lips, and I can't think of any greater compliment to a recording artist than saying that listening to this album made me wish to learn to play the instrument myself.

Very, very highly recommended.

Shockingly, wonderfully human!!!.......2006-08-01

I've hunted for quite some time for music that stir my imagination, my heart & my blood and I've found it in Djivan Gasparyan! I would go so far as to classify this as properly 'gothic' if for no other reason than the force at which it pulls on my heartstrings. It's wonderfully traditional (no cheezy synthesizers or new age pop fluff!) and rather than implying the cultural blend of 'world music' it remains incredibly loyal to the region from which it came and paints an amazing picture in one's head of that place. This was my 1st purchase of his work and now I'm going to purchase the rest of it because of this! If you want to really 'feel' then I'd strongly recommend this!

Petra at their finest..........2007-07-09

Now this...this has the Holy Ghost annointing all over it. Each and every song on this album has such wonderful Word-Inspired lyrics. Songs like Grave Robber and God Pleaser are timeless testaments of Bob Hartments commitment and dedication to God's Word. This is one if not the greatest Christian album I've ever had the priveldge of hearing.

"Not of this World" and "Grave Robber" really put Petra in a whole new class of sound. Petra is now not only able to hit drums and hammer out guitar chords, but they are also, in this album, refining a sound of their own.

As in "More Power to Ya," Petra invoked a sense of nostalgia in songs like "Bema Seat," "Not by Sight," "Lift Him Up," and "Pied Piper," all of which are favorites of mine.

I'm not completely absorbed by any individual song, but the CD as a whole is a consistently-crafted work of art.

Petra's Pre-Schlitt Perfection.......2006-12-05

"Not Of This World" is my favorite pre-Schlitt Petra album. Like others have stated, it has a very Kansas/Foreigner/Styx feel to it, but it does stand out from other Christian albums of that time. Most contemporary Christian bands have been accused of (and in many cases, rightfully so) copying secular bands' sounds in order to appeal to a Christian audience. With Petra, however, we get a band that has metamorphosized numerous times only to sound more unique with each transformation. The band had quite a few mellow years, especially after their wonderful "Beyond Belief," but went out with a bang on their last studio album, "Jekyll and Hyde."

This particular album includes one of my favorite Petra songs, "Graverobber." It seems to be a lot of other people's favorite as well. Other highlights include the title track, "Occupy" and "Blinded Eyes." In short, this is THE must-have early Petra album. There are a ton of compilation disks out there that will catch you up on the rest of their early work, but you have to own this album. Every song on it is a winner.

The best petra album before John Schlitt.......2006-09-24

This in my humble opinion is the best Petra album of the Greg x voltz era. His vocal talent really shines on this one. This is a must have for any petra fans.

The only thing I did not like was the fact that it was really not a band effort.

Louie Weaver did not play on this one. I dont know who else didn't, but I do know that not everybody in the band was apart of this. Or had very little to do with it.

Bob did tell me though that since Louie was a live drummer he played relativly few albums. But dont let that stop you from buying this album in anyway

CrutcHead's fave Christian rock LP.......2006-04-22

Personally, for me this is the best record ever unleashed by Christian Music's perennial rock act - the band Petra, which serves as their worthy follow up for their grand classic album MORE POWER TO YA, that forever laminated the band in their premiere status, stretching their career to a thirty year plus lifespan.

Packaged as the third one to appear with their spaceship-guitar mascot of sorts (this time all set up flying over into space in full ignition (first appearing on their fourth LP, the similarly Black Sabbath LP titled Never Say Die, wherein the Guitar-ship is flagging up not to totally sag down)), going on the similar vein as that of Queen's A DAY AT THE RACES (also a certain follow up LP to another monumental classic album A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, and also there's Aerosmith's PUMP) it is one of those albums which comes as a semi-concept album, containing a track which closed its entirety by the same portion which started the LP - in this case a good rendition of the traditional church tune Doxolgy by PETRA's then-unsung keyboard wiz John Slick, who sadly left the band after this effort.

A leverage of indispensable sound is found entirely on this album incorporated within its melodic rock delivery, that matches the equally insightful and powerful lyrics within each song, being that an improved quality (production-wise) is made possible due to a more expensive budget that's been made affordable from the success of their previous release MORE POWER TO YA to this one -- which claims in retrospect a straightforward thematical structure of christian messages, that are found from the initial title track that'd segued from the introduction of Slick's Doxolgy rendition, to the album's closer "Godpleaser" with its clear crystalized perspective of keeping a keen insight on eternal values within its scope. The band also lambasted matters regarding personal motives with the hard-rocking track "Bema Seat" with a no-holds-barred delivery, just as it suddenly clicks from the relaxed ambience of the very thoughtful title track, and drove again into the similar vein with the song "Grave Robber" - which peculiarly may have been among one of those songs which are intended to the memory of one among Christian music's finest the late Keith Green, who've died on a plane crash accident just a year before this album's release (along with Petra's then-co-STAR SONG label mate Twila Paris' "Do I Trust You"). Then it moved on to end its first side with a carrion call for those who 'do not see' with the track "Blided Eyes"; which afterwards turned to open up the platter's other half with Slick's "Not By Sight", continuing the band's awesome energizers by their lyrical structures for christians to continue on the path. What's outstanding as well is the track "Pied Piper" which speaks of so-called preachers who are more on the interest of propagating corporate means than for those matters with spiritual value.

What's really apparent in this album is Petra's sonic sincerety not only for what christian ideals they try to propagate, but also in their sheer integrity as a solid rock format unit for what they are packaged in at the time. It's a surprise that by the following year Petra pale-out quite instantly with their album BEAT THE SYSTEM - which is an attempt (I bet given by some unknowledgable executive's concept) to change their format vying for the so-called new-wave sound that was then prominent at that time, perhaps driven as well by certain ideas of certain religious communities ... but obviously that's just not what the band should've dealth themselves into, winding Petra to gradually progress to move on as a band in their continuity, but perhaps only just for the sake of making it so, if not for the better as a result.

However, Petra's NOT OF THIS WORLD is just about the simplest hard-rock album and yet undoubtably heavy when it comes to its impact of message and musical clarity.

A real classic.

This World Is Not My Home weds seven songs from Lone Justice's two albums (issued in 1985 and 1986) with 10 previously unreleased tracks. Of these 10, eight predate the 1985 breakup in which guitarist Ryan Hedgecock, bassist Marvin Etzioni, and drummer Don Heffington split from lead vocalist Maria McKee. That's a good thing, because the initial lineup easily outshone the too-smooth studio pros who replaced them. Souped-up covers of the traditional "Rattlesnake Mama" and Merle Haggard's "Working Man Blues," both recorded in 1983, lay bare the band's roots in the then-raging Los Angeles punkabilly scene. Etzioni's energetic riffs ricochet off the bedrock rhythm section and McKee's tremulous trill cuts with a gritty edge. But the last third of the disc, including three songs from the lackluster second album and a gimmicky cover of the Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane" (with guest vocalist Bono) is noticeably weaker. --Anders Smith-Lindall

An Excellent Overview.......2006-02-24

Here, Maria's sweat flows from this combined best-of/rarities collection as if from her brow, and her heart ... hell, her heart beats like a rhythm section all its own. Check out the live version of "Sweet, Sweet Baby" for one example. For another, skip back to the early demos which lead off the disc ... or the re-mastered version of "Shelter" that seduces you into its groove. Other gems include the Bob Dylan-penned "Go Away Little Boy" (featuring Dylan and Ron Wood on guitars) and an in-concert duet of the Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane" with U2's Bono. As good and strong as those songs are, it's the band's previously unreleased demos that prove most earth-shattering. The Maria-penned "Drugstore Cowboy," for example, is a shotgun blast of authentic cowpunk-and far, far more. An infectious psychodrama framed in a country twang, it hints at everything to come, both for Lone Justice and Maria on her own.

When I heard this band in the early 1980s The were HOT. The Original Rhythm section of David Harrington & Donny Willens was like a runaway locomotive. The original Lone Justice was akin to Sister Rosetta Tharp meets Creedence Clear Water & The Stones. Due to an inexperienced manager's poor advice, Ryan & Maria signed with David Geffen. U-2s Producer Jimmy Iovine who was already bought and paid for, was plamed off on Lone Justice. the rhythm section was sacked and the resulting albums were a poor excuse for what the band had previously strived so hard to sound like. The self titled first album "Lone Justice" was a milk-sop album of middle-of-the-road, wimp-rock! The only saving grace of any of the Lone Justice recordings ever released is this album "This World Is Not My Home" and it's previously unreleased cuts that feature the band in the early original form of their 1980s "Heydays." As of late, Maria Mckee can hardly carry a tune in a bucket, and it's hard to determine which is worse Ryan Hedgecock's voice or guitar playing.Neither of which were ever very good to begin with!

If you live and die by Lone Justice............2004-10-05

....then it's possible that this collection will appeal to you. For anyone else I'd strongly recommend just picking up the band's two albums, Lone Justice and Shelter. I guess the rarities will appeal to some, but in all honesty they're just not that good. Ever since the Super Bowl debacle, Bono's appearance on an album gives a project a sense of whorishness, like a record company cash grab, which is pretty much the stench that pervades much of this album. Maria McKee has a great voice, and Lone Justice was her best platform to date to showcase that voice, but not like this.

The Album Should Not Be In Your Home.......2003-04-16

The castoff collection sounds just like a collection of b-Sides, which is, I suppose, what it is. The album is simply not as good as LJ's albums. Maria McKee's cowgirl posturing is off putting, and her screeching will make you beg for mercy. McKee is a great singer, but you'd never know it from this album. Everything here is a bit off kilter, if you doubt, compare her version of "Way's To Be Wicked' with Tom Petty's vastly superior original. Stick with LJ's actual albums, or better yet, McKee's solo work.

Overlong Anthology.......2003-04-08

While it often seems today as if No Depression icons Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy invented the idea of melding punk rock and country music in the early 1990s with their band Uncle Tupelo, the idea had actually been around long before that. In the 1980s, Lone Justice were perhaps the most visible practishioners of the form, managing to rise to the cusp of a breakthrough to stardom but not quite succeeding. So along comes "The World is Not My Home," to summarize the career of a band that recorded a mere two studio albums and exactly half that many hit singles.

The hit "Shelter," is here, of course. But what is particularly notable about this summation of the band's career is how few memorable songs they recorded overall. After "Shelter," the number two in this collection would probably be the rousing "I Found Love." Lead singer Maria McKee has an excellent voice, but without much in the way of strong hooks or catchy choruses, she mostly labors in vain. Even the live cover of "Sweet Jane," a duet with Bono no less, is much inferior to The Cowboy Junkies' memorably haunting version of the song that appeared a few years later.

Overall, a middling anthology from a band whose conception greatly exceeded its execution.

damn fine clarinetist.......2002-05-24

The things that Evan Ziporyn can do with his instrument are fairly astounding. This is a guy who can play a series of insane-sounding multiphonics while humming conflicting pitches and rhythms and still make the whole thing sound pretty good. Overall, a contemporary-music virtuosity fairly unparallelled on his intrument, to the best of my knowledge.

The only real problem with this disc is the music itself. It works, it's effective (often in a quasi-minimalist kind of way, often in a Blue Man Group pop kind of way), but it's not worth hearing too many times. It's still a heck-of-a-performance though, and worth owning.

I originally heard this album reviewed on NPR and subsequently decided to give it as a gift to a musician friend. It's a great album; cool clarinet sounds. Songs tend to have an alternative beat -- not exactly foot-tapping but definitely fun to listen to!

Exotic and beautiful.......2001-12-16

I bought this CD after hearing Ziporyn play live with the Bang on a Can All-Stars. I was not disappointed. The middle tracks for soprano (regular) clarinet are haunting, filled with gamelan-like inflection. But the works for solo bass clarinet, Partial Truths and Press Release, really steal the show. Ziporyn's bass clarinet virtuosity is just astounding. The harmonics in the beginning of Partial Truths makes my spine tingle. Great slap-tongue too. Wonderful.

"World" Clarinet of astounding virtuosity.......2001-09-15

If you wonder how exciting a solo clarinet album could be, this CD will come as a startling surprise. Evan Ziporyn is one of the best of the new generation of composers and musicians who might best be characterized as bi-cultural. An American who grew up in Chicago, and best known now for his work with the Bang-On-A-Can All-Stars, he has a long-standing connection with Balinese music, and directs the Gamelan Galak-Tika at MIT. His new solo CD demonstrates all of that cross-fertilization. The composer's "4 Impersonations" all derive from the music of other cultures (and Ziporyn gets pitches out of the instrument undreamed of by the standard fingering charts!). Michael Tenzer, who helped launch Gamelan Sekar Jaya in San Francisco, provides "Three Island Duos," again suggesting South Pacific musics. But most impressive is Ziporyn's own work, "Partial Truths," which pulls subtle harmonics from the clarinet, and demonstrates his extraordinary control over both the instrument and the psychology of constructing an extended solo riff. David Lang's "Press Release" is likewise fiendishly difficult to play and a gas to listen to. Even if you don't think you like the clarinet, this is an amazing CD.

Bluegrass gospel at its best.......2005-05-04

A stunning set of bluegrass gospel tunes, originally released in 1963 on Decca Records. This edition of Martin's band, the Sunny Mountain Boys, featured mandolinist Paul Williams, who co-wrote almost all of the songs on here... Williams has since gone on to lead fine bands of his own, and is currently one of the best bluegrass gospel singers in the world... Here's a nice chance to hear him back when he was a young'un!

Dimitri Tiomkin was one of the most prominent composers of Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, his career spanning a half-century and some of America's most classic films. This sprawling, four-disc anthology (its title a marketing nod to the modern remake of one of Tiomkin's notable collaborations with John Wayne) features new digital recordings of full-bodied performances by the City of Prague Orchestra and Festival Chorus, the most ambitious and comprehensive tribute to the composer yet attempted. There's something here for film score buffs (rarities like a suite from his sci-fi genre-defining Thing From Another World and the "Main Theme" for the pilot of TV's Wild, Wild West) and novice alike; indeed one could scarcely ask for a more complete overview of Tiomkin's robust orchestral oeuvre. Divided into four chapters, disc one chronicles how the Ukrainian immigrant concocted a rich Western film heritage (including such genre landmarks as Red River, High Noon, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and Rio Bravo) from largely European traditions, while the next two CD's cover his rousing work for epics and thrillers of every stripe, and collaborations with Hitchcock, Wayne, Capra, Stevens and more. More expensive than the other Essential but worth it........2007-04-22

This is an excellent set of music of Dimitri Tiomkin's music! The 4th disc is short (at just over 30 minutes), but thats because it is just the vocal versions of tracks which appeared in instrumental form throughout the first 3 discs. Whenever you buy a silva screen compilation, the first thing you ask yourself is 'when were these recordings made' and 'do I have these tracks on other compilations? Thankfully, this set has TONS of new recordings, but there is some recycled stuff and they are as follows:

Dial M For Murder is from the 1993 History of Hitchcock Vol. I, while Strangers on a Train is from 1995's History of Hitchcock Vol. II.

Three tracks originate from 1994's "Music From the Films Of John Wayne". They are "The High and the Mighty", "The Alamo - Overture" and "The Alamo - Green Leaves of Summer".


Red River is from 1996's "How The West Was Won: Classic Western Film Scores Vol. One".

The Thing From Another World suite is from the excelllent 1998 set "Alien Invasion: Space And Beyond II"

Many tracks first appeared on "Way Out West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection Vol. Two". They are: "Duel In The Sun", "The Alamo (Davy Crockett)", "Friendly Persuasion", "Giant (Main Theme)", "Gunfight at the OK Corral", "High Noon", "Rio Bravo", and "The Unforgiven (The Need For Love)".

The rest of the tracks are brand spankin new, and most are not available on other discs, so snag this one up in a hurry!

Excellent compilation of an important composer........2004-07-16

This long overdue collection of Tiomkin standards and rarities is a must for any fan of symphonic music; albeit, for film or concert hall. As the liner notes clarify; these recordings are a real labor of love for James Fitzpatrick and the Silva Screen team. Tiomkin is; undoubtedly, one of the most difficult of composers to replicate. This recording comes extremely close to "hitting the nail on the head" particularly with tracks such as: "Across the Texas Panhandle" from the Unforgiven, The Entr'acte from Duel in the Sun, The Guns of Navarone, The War Wagon, and the main title and Jett Rink theme from Giant. This recording is a bargain, particularly for collectors who have sought after many of Tiomkin's composer conducted soundtracks (which are getting harder and harder to obtain). Listeners who enjoy this set should consider seeking out previous cd releases of the soundtracks to "The Guns of Navarone" (SONY, Varese Sarabande), "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (Varese Sarabande, PEG), "55 Days at Peking" (Varese Sarabande), and "The Alamo" :original soundtrack (still available on SONY-Legacy).

Tiomkin was born in Ukraine, Russia [1894-1979] attended and graduated from St. Petersburg Academy[studied under the famed composer Glazunov] ~ had a degree in music as well as law ~ came to America in 1925, shown great interest for Native American music early in his film career.

Great fondness for "The Western" ~ "DUEL IN THE SUN" (1946) (Gregory Peck, Jennifer Jones, Joseph Cotton, Lionel Barrymore, Lilian Gish and Charles Bickford - one of biggest and successful epic Westerns ever, score & photography was simply breathtaking), "RED RIVER" (1948) (John Wayne, Monty Cliff and Walter Brennan - the Duke should have won an Oscar for his performance as the aging cantankerous cattle baron)"HIGH NOON" (1952)(classic film with Gary Cooper in his Oscar winning performance of Will Kane), "TENSION AT TABLE ROCK" (1956), "GUNFIGHT AT THE OK CORRAL" (1957)(Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp & Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday pulled this off with the help of the Main Theme), "NIGHT PASSAGE" (1957), "RIO BRAVO" (1959) (top box office leaders John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan and Ricky Nelson), "THE YOUNG LAND" (1959) (young Dennis Hopper), "RAWHIDE" (TV Series) (1959-66) (Eric Fleming as trail boss Gil Favor & Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates), "THE UNFORGIVEN" (1960) (Burt Lancaster, Audie Murphy and Audrey Hepburn), "THE WILD, WILD WEST" (TV Series) (1965-69)(Tiomkin's music never saw the light of day), "WAR WAGON" (1967) (John Wayne & Kirk Douglas starred) (beautifully melodic) ~ it's easy to see why Tiomkin loved Western lore.

Second disc contains The Epics ~ "LAND OF THE PHARAOHS" (1955) (Jack Hawkins as Pharaoh Cheops and a beautiful Joan Collins as his scheming wife), "55 DAYS AT PEKING" (1963) (Charlton Heston, David Niven and Ava Gardner is the all star cast), "THE FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE" (1964) (featuring Alec Guinness as emperor Marcus Aurelius), "CIRCUS WORLD" (1964) (John Wayne, Claudia Cardinale and Rita Hayworth under the big top) ~ next we Hitchcock Thrillers with "STRANGERS ON A TRAIN" (1951) (a masterpiece film featuring Robert Walker and Farley Granger are both very convincing as we learn, never talked to strangers on a train or anywhere), "DIAL M FOR MURDER" (1954) (tense moments come from Grace Kelly, Ray Milland and Robert Cummings - they don't get any better than this) ~ finally Drama and High Adventure with "HIGH AND MIGHTY" (1954) (another outstanding performance by John Wayne, as the co-pilot of an airline whistling the haunting theme), "GIANT" (1956)(another big epic film with Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Chill Wills show us what it's like to be a Texan, with oil and money), "WILD IS THE WIND" (1957) (Anthony Quinn, Anna Magnani and Anthony Franciosa), "THE GUNS OF NAVARONE" (1961) (World War II film featuring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven and Stanley Baker on a small Greek Island trying to outwit the Germans and a very big gun) ~ some of Tiomkin's most inspiring themes rise to the surface.

On disc three ~ as we continue with Drama and High Adventures "IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE" (1946) (James Stewart, Donna Reed, Thomas Mitchell, Lionel Barrymore and Ward Bond with wholesome warm and endearing themes from our favorite composer), "TARZAN AND THE MERMAIDS" (1948) (in his 12th film as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller still had what it takes to swim and defeat the man-god Balu - Weissmuller and Tiomkin the perfect combination for this Tarzan adventure), "CYRANO DE BERGERAC" (1950) (Jose Ferrer stars as Edmond Rostand's famous swordsman with a even more famous nose), "THE WELL" (1951) (intense cues give the film musical triumphs in final scenes), "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" (1951) (exciting Howard Hawks film with a score to match), "FRIENDLY PERSUASION" (1956) (director William Wyler shows the life and times of a Quaker family played by Gary Cooper, Dorothy Mcguire and Anthony Perkins during the American Civil War, very touching), "THE ALAMO" (1960) (big budget epic western with Big John Wayne it's producer, director and star as Davy Crockett with a haunting and never to be forgotten "The Green Leaves of Summer"), "TOWN WITHOUT PITY" (1961) (Kirk Douglas in a post-war Germany story, blends jazz themes with Tiomkin signature arrangements) ~ Tiomkin always made the difference when it came to scoring a film.

When listening to the music of a film, you had the feeling of the storyline, characters and convictions of the whole picture, they'll never be another to come this way again ~ Silva America has outdone themselves on this one, it is definitely a five star film score box set...gotta love it!
