Like De La Soul's Three Feet High & Rising, the Pharcyde's 1992 debut came at a time when hip-hop was headed in one direction, but the group was going somewhere else entirely. A crew of spunky b-boys armed with a self-deprecating sense of humor, the Pharcyde made an album that was fresh and profoundly honest. "Ya Mama" is a clever array of mother jokes set to cartoonish beats; "On the DL" has each MC unguardedly making self-denigrating confessions (like Fat Lip admitting to masturbating--previously a hip-hop no-no); and "Passin' Me By" is an ode to hopeless crushes on unattainable women. The group's playfulness was also infused with smarts, too, most visibly on "Officer." Recorded around the time of the Rodney King verdict, the song was an indictment of racial profiling--shrouded, of course, in a comic tale that parodied Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos." With animated beats from J-Swift (the West Coast version of Prince Paul) and four distinct rhyming styles, particularly Slim Kid Tre's melodiousness and Fat Lip's nerdiness, this album captures an innocence rarely seen in the music's posturing ways. It's something that this album captures forever. --Joseph PatelCustomer Reviews:
Awesome Fun B-Boy Music (Rating: 10 out of 10- -5 stars).......2007-03-02
No CD is perfect in anyway, but I find this to come very close to perfection. This masterpiece by The Pharcyde is one of the best CDs you can have if you love hip hop. It brings back memories of back when hip hop was fun and at the same time showed off your skills on the mic ("Housing MFs like a real estate agent" - "I'm The Type Of ***** In Charge). That is exactly what this album is all about, making fun music.
I always said that the west coast can come with come of the most creative music in hip hop. This album continues to validate my statement. I heard their follow up "Labcabincalifornia" was dope as well, and I will check that out also.

this is class all the way. great west coast hip hop. shoot, this makes me remember groups like freestyle fellowship, da wascals, madkap, and the nonce. before this came out, i never heard a west coast act that made me forget that they were from california. they do not make them like this anymore...........ANYWHERE!!!!! i recommend absolutely everything.
Creativety, humor, honesty and charm all in the mix - the perfect hip-hop record.......2006-06-18
In a time when gangsta rap dominated completely - not just on the westcoast, but in the whole country - there was this nice quartet. A breath of fresh air and a style unlike anything else. Slim Kid Tre, Imani, Fat Lip & Bootie Brown was a part of the rising freestylescene in L.A., and they were more inspired by Native Tongues rather than N.W.A. and Ice-T. Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde shows musical creativity and it sounds playful. There wasn't any pressure. You could just be yourself, and that's an important premise for many classics.
Humor, honesty and charm are three other important clues, and it was this that separated The Pharcyde from the other rappers. The production is mostly handled by J-Sw!ft, he rotated between funky b-boy songs as "I'm That Type Of N*" and "Officer" and more jazzy stuff like "4 Better Or 4 Worse" and "Otha Fish". It's a lot of James Brown and J.B.'s samples, but also jazznames like Herbie Mann and Lou Donaldson. On the classic single "Passing Me By" they used Quincy Jones' "Summer In The City", but it also features a Jimi Hendrix sample. The other singles, "Ya Mama" and "Otha Fish", are also reckoned classics. On "Otha Fish" Slim Kid (now better known as Tre) could swing free with his wonderful laidback singin'. The record has a totally unique feel and energy, and not since De La Soul's revolutionary debut from 1989, 3 Feet High & Rising, had we heard an album this consistent positively and unceremonious. The Pharcyde didn't quite manage to follow up the success, even though their second, Labcabincalifornia, was a respectably try. However Bizarre Ride... have assured them a spot in "the Hip-Hop Hall Of Fame", and this set belongs home in every serious collection.
The most entertaining hip hop album EVER.......2006-04-28
The first full song is called "Oh Sh*t", a hilarious mix of stories that made the four use the exclamation. Between being busted and finding your lady is a man, over a jazzy and bluesy beat, this song is great. "4 Better Or 4 Worse" also has a great soulful beat, awesome chorus and on-point lyrics. "I'm That Type Of N**ga" is just a happy, catchy song, with a sax loop, funny chorus, and more great rhymes. "Soul Flower" is maybe my favorite beat here, it makes my head bob and puts me on the brink of dancing every time, and the beat to "On the DL" is just as great, a bass and drum heavy track with great vibes. The lyrics and hooks to both do not slack, and both are classics. "Officer" is an anti-police anthem, but it's done in the signature Pharcyde style, half-kidding the entire song. It almost sounds like a parody of a Public Enemy song, with the spinning, loopy beat and chorus. "Ya Mama" is maybe the funniest song I've ever heard. The beat is great, and I know you think you've heard mama jokes before, but wait till you hear this. A peg leg with a kickstand? An afro with a chinstrap? Where do they get this stuff? This is perfectly followed by "Passin' Me By", indisputibly one of the greatest hip hop songs of all time. The beat is among the best ever, and the lyrics tell the stories of the girls that got away. It's as legendary a hip hop song as any. "Otha Fish", one of my favorites, has a toned down, happy beat with flutes, providing hope to any lovesick teen. "Pack the Pipe", a silly story which involves giving weed to a 4-year old, and "Return of the B-Boy", an excellent groove, finish the album amazingly in a way only the Pharcyde could. Throughout the album, hilarious skits like "Quinton's on the Way", "It's Jigaboo Time", and "Pack the Pipe" only enhance the tracks.
"Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde" is a must-have for anyone who likes hip hop. It has the funniest lyrics and immaculate production. Everything went right on "Bizarre Ride", and I speak of it among the best ever, with other greats from the early 90s period like Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Souls of Mischief, and A Tribe Called Quest. You don't know what you're missing without this in your collection.

A truly expansive collection of cuts, this companion to Northern Exposure 2: West Coast Edition is one for all ears that sees Sasha and Digweed juxtapose dance-pop tunes with club-land mixes. Converts to the Northern Exposure series will further enjoy the skillful Sasha and Digweed mixes washed (as ever) with layers of smooth late-night warmth; newcomers will find a variety of styles and sounds stretching beyond conventional trance-techno to whet their appetite. Gus Gus enjoy two wonderful moments, opening the disc with their dreamy, trip-hop-flavored "Believe" and also offering the penultimate cut with their celestial, bottom-end-boosted "Purple." Other standout moments include Prana's "Geomantik" and Doi-Oing's warm and hazy "Blue." Occasionally the shadow of hip-hop can be heard snaking into the mix, but never enough to take away from the predominant trance atmosphere, which makes Northern Exposure sets so unique. --Steffan ChiraziCustomer Reviews:
The Ultimate Late Night Aphrodisiac.......2007-07-07
It showcases what DJs can do to tunes.. It proves that they can indeed be artists.
Starting off with the gorgeous sounds of Gus Gus and Chicane , (atmospheric, earthy and organic.), to the main room progressive sound of Frontside, Spooky and Uberzone.. (dark, dirty and sexy.) before landing with the most soothing sounds of Hybrid's `Unfinished Symphony"... this mix transcends Genres and Sub-genres and simply delivers a musical journey indescribable by words.
To know that it was recorded from vinyl rather that any computer software adds to the natural feel that has come to define the `Northern Exposure' series..
Is this the best of the series!? Hard to say.. but for pure musicality, originality and midnight magic.. yes.. yes it is.
A beautiful, dark, sensual journey through the underground as only Sasha with the aid of Digweed can deliver.
GET INTO IT!
East Beats West But Still Not Equal To Volume One.......2007-06-06
I'd have to say that this set scores an easy second place for the Northern Exposure series. However it still falls short compared to the quality and creativity of the first.
3.5/5 stars for this half of Northern Exposure, volume 2.
One of my most revered CDs.......2006-12-27
If you bought NEII:West Coast first, do yourself a favor and check out the good ol' East. It w.i.l.l. blow you away by comparison, and I love the West Coast edition. While West has fantastic tracks which are more relaxed, consistent, bubbly and soothing... East takes that formula, bends it, twists it, makes suitable additions and comes out with something so much more intensly pleasing to the ear. The vocal selections on tracks 1-3 make the album hauntingly appealing at first, and remind me of the cover of the album due to their blue/white liquid texture and composition... but just when you sit back to enjoy the smooth relaxation Sasha and Digweed serve up first, it is only an appetizer.
The next set of perhaps 6 tracks up the ante on the tempo and profundity of the listening experience, especially on Geomantik, Blue-->Little Bullet and Botz. These tracks are, to me, so reminiscent of those found on Disc 1 of John Digweeds GU006:Sydney release. Tribal, with the "evil frog" croak and beats which create a spiraling intensity about them as the listener is propelled through the vortex of sound.
The album ends with lovely track slections and mixes by Lost Tribe, Gus Gus's "Purple" (An early trance classic and staple Tranceport remix by Sasha), and Hybrid's "Symphony". I have to say I was a bit surprised by their slection of Hybrid's track, but pleasntly so; a unique artist with a unique track to end a rewardingly unique listening experience.
I would recommend this album to anyone with an ear for audible appreciation: if you really dig albums like Sasha's Involver, Lexicon Avenue's mix on Dave Seaman's "Therapy Sessions Vol. 3", or any of the other Northern Exposure series (particularly NEI and NEIII:Disc 1), you will love this album to death.
If you are looking for Global Underground comparisons, GU006:Sydney and GU013: Ibiza come to mind; not surprising, as they are the cream of the Sasha and Digweed GU crop.
If you have not even heard of any of the aforementioned albums, you will still love this album to death.
My absolute favorite among the greatest collaboration series of two of the greatest DJ's on Planet Home.

Check the fluke track Referendum #10 for the signature Sasha sound, haunting poignant beauty partially embossed by sadness that speaks to the human soul.
You won't find another Northern EXposure compilation like this one.
Gus Gus's purple original is here to for those who have heard the legendary remix and want to get a feel for the original version. Additional breakbeat production on the track of course but it was pretty much left untouched.

Welcome to hip-hop originality. On Wyclef Jean's The Ecleftic, his beats-beyond-borders ideology, seen on the Fugees' The Score and his own Carnival, shines bright. Rap's Renaissance man, he's pushing hip-hop forward with his musical vision. Firmly rooted in an inclusive old-school aesthetic (recalling Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa) he's got Kenny Rogers and Pharoahe Monch sharing space on a dub plate. Youssou N'Dour guests on the indignant, powerful "Diallo." And Mary J. Blige joins Wyclef for the mournfully beautiful duet "911." Though there are many musical flavors on The Ecleftic, Jean's deft musical arrangements prevent them from descending into tokenism. But at the end of the day, there's no doubt that this is hip-hop, with taut tracks like "Thug Angels," "However You Want It," and "Pulling Me In" showing that Wyclef's holding it down for the heads, some of whom felt that his Carnival was a little too poppy. The Ecleftic contains enough anger and righteous indignation to be real hip-hop, and enough humor and musical magic to be fun. --Lizz Mendez BerryAlbum Description

Eclectic to say the least.......2004-07-20
All things considered some hip hop heads will argue that there isn't enough rap, or that it doesn't suit thier tastes. But Ecleftic can hold a rare title of being "hip hop for people who dont really like hip hop". And for me, and many other hip hop fans, elecftic will represent something different and a little innovative with great production work. Beats catchy enough to make you bob your head and enough soul to make you want to sing along, and plenty of culture - Wyclef proves once again on Ecleftic that hip hop is an artform that can be effectively used as glue to hold together many elements of several different musical genres at the same time, and bring it all together in a melody that's different pieces oddly compliment one another beautifully.

Album Description
Pete Rock, producer extraordinaire, MC and Hip Hop royalty. At the dawning of the 1990s, Pete Rock manned the boards and his MC counterpart C.L. Smooth handled microphone duties on two of the most influential and timeless contributions to Hip-Hop ever released. 1992's Mecca & The Soul Brother and 1994's The Main Ingredient have gone on to shape and influence an entire generation of music listeners as well as producers such as The Neptunes, Kanye West, Just Blaze and 9th Wonder.Constantly producing and remixing music's brightest stars (Nas, Public Enemy, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, Notorious B.I.G., Run DMC, Q-Tip, Mary J. Blige) and having released a classic solo album Soul Survivor (1998) and Instrumental excursion Petestrumentals (2001) Pete Rock returns With Soul Survivor 2.
Acting as MC, and producer Pete Rock has assembled a cast of Hip Hop's most talented artists to deliver more than just a sequel to Soul Survivor. Pete teamed up with Dead Prez to create "Warzone", a club and street anthem for 2004 reminiscent of the heyday of Public Enemy and NWA when the music had so much soul that you couldn't help but dance to it, but at the same time it also presented a strong social message. Recently reunited, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth have crafted a summertime anthem titled "Love Thing", which brings to the forefront Justin Timberlake back-up singer Denosh. Other standout collaborations with Pete Rock on the album include the poignant Pharoahe Monch on "Just Do It", the soulful North Carolina group Little Brother on "Give It 2 Ya", and Slum Village's certified head banger "Da Villa". The album also features collaborations with Talib Kweli, Kardinal Offishall, RZA, GZA, Postaboy, J-Dilla, Black Ice, Leela James, Skillz and Krumbsnatcha.

The Soul Brother Like No Other {4 Stars}.......2007-03-16
As far as skip material goes, I found "Just Do It", "One MC, One DJ", "It's The Postaboy" and "Beef" fell under that category. Don't get me wrong, none of these songs have bad beats, but the flows and rhymes on them are forgettable -- with the exception of "One MC, One DJ" which actually has the opposite problem (great lyrics, forgettable production). Some may disagree, but I simply didn't feel those tracks. The rest of the album is definitely on point though.
Soul Survivor is nothing short of guaranteed satisfaction. It'd be nice to hear P.R. go back to those jazz samples every now and then, but the man still has an ear for production that no producer has been able to approach since he came out back in the day. There are a few tracks on this LP that fall short of Soul Brother No. 1's pedigree, but they are in the minority. With that being said, I still think a good 85% of the tracks on this joint are pulled off seamlessly. I recommend checking this out.
Standout Tracks: Headrush [RZA & GZA], Give It To You [Little Brother], No Tears [Leela James] (My favorite), Truth Is [Black Ice], Fly 'Til I Die [Talib Kweli & CL Smooth], Ni**** Know [J. Dilla], It's A Love Thing [CL Smooth], and We Good [Kardinal Offishall]
The Soul Brother is back.......2006-04-05
SOUL BROTHER #1...ALWAYS.......2006-02-21
1. "Truth Is" feat Black Ice- From Mount Vernon to Philly, Black Ice drops def poems like rainfalls and PR brings the heat. This track is about what happens when MC's with a message get into the industry.
3. "Just Do It" feat. Pharoahe Monch- Beat and rhymes so gutter, you'll be sick for a week. This is probably the dirtiest beat he ever made.
4. "Give It To Ya" feat. Little Brother- The very first time I heard LB and I'm still a fan to this day. Light, mellow track about their hopes of getting into this industry. Listen close to the 2nd beat. It's "Skinz" (Mecca & The Soul Brother)remixed.
6. "It's A Love Thing" feat. CL Smooth and Denosh- throws it back to the good ol' days. CL's laid back flow and PR's horns complement each other. Stuff like this'll have you begging for a reunion album.
7. "One Mic & One DJ" feat. Skillz- the rock n roll meets the menace from VA.
9. "No Tears" feat. Leela James- introducing Leela James ladies and gentlemen. Remeniscient of Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone. The soul you NEED to hear. Reminds me of "Get By" by Talib Kweli.
12. "Warzone" feat. dead prez- OH MY GOD. This track is undescribible.
13. "Da Villa" feat. Slum Village- the banger of the album. I was feeling Slum Village before this. But after this I realized what kind of beasts these two can be, 'specially Elzhi.
14. "Niggaz Know" feat. J. Dilla- who says producers can't rap? R.I.P. Dilla.
15. "Appreciate" feat. CL Smooth- Mecca & The Soul Brother bring the album to a full circle by giving thanks to everybody who's supported them over the years. The beat got 60's soul all over it.
All in all, this is arguably Pete Rock's most consistant and critically acclaimed solo album. By improving on his game and bringing more soul to the table, this is a testament that Pete Rock ain't going anywhere anytime soon.
Pete Rock is on point!.......2005-12-03
I like this album, the beats are on point except for the real commercial sounding stuff. Also, some (not all) but some of the guest appearances I am not feeling.
To be honest I prefer Pete Rock ryhming over his own beats.. To me his lyrics are just as good if not better than alot of the MC's that he put on his records.
I would have liked a little more turntablism on this album and even on some of his instrumentals. I don't mean scratching on every song but just a little more to blend in with those beats.
Overall, this CD is good, on point and far better than the type of so called hip hop that is out there now. The intro is hot and most of the songs are banging. You need a decent system to get the full effect of a Pete Rock track.
I look foward to the next Pete Rock release.

P. Diddy's Soundtrack Cash In (Rating: 6 out of 10- -3 stars).......2007-01-23
What really kills this album is lack of standout tracks. A lot of them I considered failed. You can tell Fat Joe was turning completely pop on the song "Girl I'm A Bad Boy". Foxy Brown and Mario Winans' "Pretty Girl BS" is another song that falls under skip material. "Love Don't Love Me" by Justin Timerlake just plain sucks. One reviewer said that Mary J Blige's song "Didn't Mean" was funky, but I failed to notice it, but did notice it was a rehased A Tribe Called Quest's "Find A Way" beat. The majority of these songs that I didn't name were not worth mentioning, becasue they failed to gain my attention.
If you liked the movie, you might like the soundtrack. This is a CD for the masses of mainstream rap listeners. Unfortunately there are a few tracks that I will listen to on this soundtrack. If you haven't heard this and are curious, give it shot. If not, you're not missing very much. Also since the executive producer is P. Diddy and this is on Bad Boy Records, expects his famous ad-libs throughout it.

A smoother, steamier slice of house techno, this installment of the Northern Exposure series is a soft and sexy continuous mix that cruises comfortably in the fast lane without offering any standout moments of delirious excitement. Centering themselves firmly in the desert-trance arena, Sasha and Digweed opt for dreamy over direct every time. LSG's "Netherworld," Taucher's "Waters," and the William Orbit and Spooky mix of Sven Vath's "An Accident in Paradise" are all choice moments to get lost in, while Humate's "3.2" is a warm and cozy chunk of ambient techno. Overall, this edition of Northern Exposure is not the most essential member of the collection, but it does provide more than enough fluid trance-techno moments to satisfy dedicated fans. --Steffan ChiraziCustomer Reviews:
Sequels Are Usually Disappointing.......2007-06-06
The first release is a classic that will stand against the test of time despite being two years the junior to this album. Northern Exposure II: West Coast is outdated with tacky-sounding trance. Glowsticks and pacifiers anyone?

A progressive house classic ..........2004-08-02
The West Coast edition is the more danceable of the two NE2s, with some of the best progressive house tracks of the era/ever. Opening with Cygnus X's "Protison" (incorrectly listed as "Superstrings" on the back cover), a lush, bouncy, euphoric mood is instantly created only to be torn down by the stabbing melodies and abrasive percussion Speedy J's "Fusion". Humate's classic "3.2" is mixed in creating a dark, atmospheric sound, that melds perfectly with William Orbit's remix of Sven Vath's techno classic "An Accident In Paradise". The Light's "Panfried" and Third Man's "Solar Cycle" keep the beat steady, before the duo really turn up the energy with L.S.G.'s "Netherworld". The Jules Vern mix heard on this album is the best version of the song I've ever heard emphasizing the best elements of the song, and creating a hard hitting progressive house floor-filler. Taucher's melodic "Waters" is perfectly mixed holding the peak created by "Netherworld" to over ten minutes of sheer electronic bliss. "Teach Me" by Art Of Silence is a serene break from the energy, but we're soon brought back to 4/4 floor-stomping energy with Transa's anthemic "Enervate", before slowly closing with the trance inducing groove of Armin's "Blue Fear".
While not as timeless as it's predecessor or the East Coast Edition, this is still a classic piece of progressive house. Although more immediately accessible, it is ultimately less rewarding than it's counterpart. Still, an essential purchase for progressive house/trance fans.

50 STARS IF YOU ASK ME.......2007-01-31
this is class all the way. great west coast hip hop. shoot, this makes me remember groups like freestyle fellowship, da wascals, madkap, and the nonce. before this came out, i never heard a west coast act that made me forget that they were from california. they do not make them like this anymore...........ANYWHERE!!!!! i recommend absolutely everything.
