5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite all time albums.......2007-04-06

I have always enjoyed this recording. The orchestrations by Dave Grusin are fantastic and shows why he was in demand for movie and television scores. The song selection is very eclectic from easy tempo to fast tempo, from soft to dramatic. The selections "Dock Of The Bay" and "Pretty World" got the most airplay as singles but one could sometimes hear "Crystal Illusions" in it's entirety on AM radio. "Viola" is a beautiful tune with a romantic flair. It contains a lot of basic percussion and guitar and Grusin's arrangement fits it beautifully. "Dois Dias" harkens back to "Roda" from "Look Around" with it's fast tempo. "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" might have been a good choice for a single with it's uptempo beat but it languished as an album cut. "Song Of No Regrets" and the title cut both have a very dramatic flair to them and, along with "Salt Sea" and "Empty Faces," have lyrics by Lani Hall. Lani was writing lyrics starting with the album "Look Around." Lani continued writing lyrics for some of the Brazillian writers but more appeared on this album that any of the other Brasil'66 recordings.Even though "Dock Of The Bay" and "Pretty World" got a tremendous amount of airplay in 1969, both failed to chart into the Top 40. The latter is my favorite selection from the album. It combines the key elements of all the member's instrumentation and Grusin's backing arrangements. I still have the LP record of this and now that it is on CD, my Brasil '66 collection, with the exception of "Stillness" is complete. This is a good solid purchase.

1 out of 5 stars Come on Sergio, Where is the rest of the group?.......2007-01-17

First of all, this album consists of excellent songs with beautiful arrangements. Unfortunately, it is not what is is purported to be. This is supposed to be an album by Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66. For the most part, it is not. What it is instead is an album of solos by Lani Hall with orchestra backings. There are only 2 songs on the whole album that sound like Brasil '66. They are "Dock of the Bay" and "Pretty World", which were previously released as singles. With the possible exception of "You Stepped Out of a Dream", I cannot hear Karen Phillip on any of the other songs. If she or any of the other group members were included in these recordings, they are hopelessly buried under all the orchestrations. I am not saying that Lani Hall wasn't a good singer, but I do think she was pretty much a glory hog. I remember hearing her being interviewed on the radio sometime in the mid-70's. The interviewer asked her what it was like blending her sound with the rest of the group. She replied in no uncertain terms that she was the "Lead Singer" and she didn't blend with the group, the group blended with her.

This album reminds me of a lot of mid to late 60's albums where people thought they were getting recordings by their favorite groups when they were really getting the lead singer with studio musicians.

If you are looking for a Lani Hall solo album, this will do nicely. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a real Brasil '66 album, pass this by and go for "Herb Alpert Presents", "Equinox" or "Pais Tropical".

4 out of 5 stars Where's the DVD.......2006-02-19

I've seen the live performance film that followed this album; it was released on Laser Disc. It's pretty stunning if you're a Lemper fan. Let's hope that the owners see fit to issue it on DVD

5 out of 5 stars Great Material, branching out from Kurt Weill.......2005-10-02

`Illusions' and `City of Strangers', albums primarily of vocals by Ute Lemper, were released in 1992 and 1995 respectively, interspersed with her releasing the last of her major albums of Kurt Weill material in 1993. `Illusions' and `City of Strangers' are both a mix of songs in German, French, and English. Of the two, `Illusions' is the more coherent, but that difference is small. Very much like The Doors first two albums, these two are both cut from a single cloth and with some material are precursors of Ms. Lemper's really excellent `Berlin Cararet Songs' done in both full English and German versions in 1997. For example, several songs on these two albums were written by Friedrich Hollaender who is featured on the `Berlin...' albums.

For those readers who are not familiar with Ute Lemper's repertoire, these two albums, along with the first `Ute Lemper Sings Kurt Weill' may be the best introduction to her style of performance. I have yet to hear one of her albums which I did not like; however, I suggest you stay away from her `Best of' album and her `Life is a Cabaret' album. The latter is a takeoff on Lisa Minelli's style and material and while I can listen to it with pleasure, it does not represent Ms. Lemper's best interpretations. If your taste in female vocalists includes Edith Piaf, Marlene Dietrich, and Barbra Streisand, especially for her dramatic and unusual interpretations of some songs, I suspect you will really like these recordings. If you are more fond of jazz vocalists along the lines of Blossom Deary and Billy Holliday, or like traditional Broadway performances as done by Betty Buckley, these may be just a bit too heavily laden with European `Weltshmertz'. Also, if you have no strong tastes in popular female vocalists, I strongly suggest you give these recordings a try. I also suggest that Ms. Lemper even does a better job with these tunes than you may find from a classically trained singer such as Anne Sophie von Otter, who is just a bit too sweet for this peppery material.

For readers who are were attracted to Ms. Lemper by the album, `Punishing Kiss', I strongly recommend these albums even over her Weill material.

Overall, if there is a better vocalist doing European ballads and musical stage numbers, I am not familiar with them. As a long time fan of Barbra Streisand who has found her material a bit flat lately, I am immensely happy to have Ms. Lemper to listen to, and always look forward to her latest material. I just with she would perform more on our shores.

Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Such Lovely Illusions.......2004-11-13

Ute Lemper has mastered the thematic/concept albums. All the songs on this album are linked thematically and the album is much more than simply a tribute album to Dietrich and Piaf. The songs harken back to a time, a place that is no longer and Ms. Lemper dramatically transforms these songs, indeed, relics, themselves, from the past to the modern ear. And the magestic voice of Ute Lemper captures the listener and propels the listener to her own world of drama, the story. One of the most beautiful songs you may ever hear is

5 out of 5 stars Ute's Magical Illusions.......2004-06-28

I first became aware of German cabaret singer/actress Ute Lemper when she was a guest performer at Roger Waters' Berlin Wall performance of the Pink Floyd epic, "The Wall," back in 1990. Even though her participation was brief, I was nonetheless struck by her lovely, powerful singing voice, her commanding stage presence, and her goddess-like beauty. And I've been a huge fan ever since. Her 1992 album, "Illusions," is one of Ute's best. Throwing herself into the songs of Marlene Dietrich and Edith Piaf, Ute makes each song her own. One of the amazing things about Ute is that she doesn't just sing a song, she *performs* it, completely getting into character and giving the listener a totally theatrical experience. Listen to how she delivers such classic Dietrich/Piaf numbers like "They Call Me Naughty Lola," "Padam," "Black Market," "Jonny, Wenn Du Geburtstag Hast" and "L'Accordeoniste." Simply outstanding. And her voice can also make you melt---and I mean MELT--- on such beautiful ballads as "Want To Buy Some Illusions" and "Falling In Love Again." Ute Lemper is simply one of the most fantastic singers and performers in the world today, a truly talented lady, and "Illusions" is easily one of her very best releases. So pick it up, and let the one-and-only Ute Lemper entrance you with her vocal magic.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Ute.......2002-07-21

Tackling the repertory of Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich is a daunting task for any singer, but Ute Lemper is not the type of artist who shies away from a musical challenge. Her impressively varied body of work and her consistent level of excellency are unique among contemporary recording artists. Lemper's ability to change so completely from song to song never ceases to amaze me, and Illusions gives her the chance to display all her flair and ability for creating characters rather than just singing songs.

The poignant Want to Buy Some Illusions?, the melancholy and sweet La Vie en Rose, the operatic Black Market, the sultry Johnny and the epic Ich Bin Von Kopf Bis Fuss/Falling in Love Again are just a few highlights of what you'll find in this wonderfully diverse CD. Illusions is not just another collection of standards sung by a talented performer. Ute Lemper and arranger/conductor Bruno Fontaine reinvent each song and make it their own, and in doing so they create one of the most beautiful CD's released in the 1990's.

3 out of 5 stars Good old Perera with O que será...........2001-08-24

Roberto Perera, one of the most important uruguayan musicians explores new combinations of the folk harp with contemporary sounds. He makes an inusual effort to conquer tropical sounds of the caribean withg his paraguayan harp and he makes it so good that rocks our perception of our great latin thing. In this production he plays Passions, Illusions & Fantasies, O Qué Sera, Chico Buarque's classic, Caricias, The Love We Share, Caribbean Sunset, and other likely melodies. It is not one ofe his greates, but it worth a look and a listen to know much more of Perera's work.

1 out of 5 stars Mystical Journey of the Elfin Squares.......2006-05-31

European progressive metalheads have come up with some surprising advancements in musicianship and songwriting, but that scene has also unleashed some staggering mediocrity. For example, Spain's Arwen. I feel bad giving this album such a harsh review, because Arwen seem to have some passion and likeability, but you could almost feel guilty about their colossal ineptitude. Arwen has eight members (they might be the only metal group on Earth with two fulltime keyboardists), and their music sounds like it was created by a committee rather than a passionate band. There may not be much of a metal scene in Spain, and unlike the trendsetters and innovators to their north, Arwen sound isolated and left behind. They're a good two decades behind in metal hipness, but instead of oozing retro cool, Arwen are bloated with outdated squareness.

This album's attempted progressions are merely imitations of what actual progressive bands were doing long ago. Really long ago. The major problem is the very prevalent keyboards, which try to sound advanced but actually sound borrowed from 80s arena rock, and even the lamest 70s art rock of Kansas or Styx. The other musicians occasionally get some good riffs going, like in "Dance of Souls" or "Infinity," only to get swept aside by treacly keyboards and histrionic vocals. One member of the band who provides a little personality is femme singer Mamen Castano, who handles about half the lead vocals. Mamen has some real power and potential for excitement, but very little subtlety or variety, and she appears to be attempting a bad impression of Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil. Meanwhile, like most of the European metal bands, Arwen sing in English. I've never thought this was necessary, because people can usually express themselves better in their native tongue. Arwen embody the worst of this trend too, with lyrics that reach impossible heights of cliche, not to mention poor translation, such as "I don't know how I can scape" or "misterious [sic] signs that time can't erase," among a continuous parade of lyrical lameness. Just take a look at the cliched song titles, then up the cliches by several orders of magnitude, and you're only beginning to imagine what Arwen have to offer, lyrically and musically. Album Description

LES NOUVELLES LECTURES COSMOPOLITES is the really prolific work of a solitary musician who explores different varied and innovating universes, from industrial chaos to neo-classicism in the style of Michael NYMAN. Sometimes, this music also evokes the style of Pascal COMELADE or gothic ambiences. His creativity is only matched by his diversity. Julien ASH doesn't fall in the trap of hermetic aestheticism or dry experiment and plays a kind of music with a pretty refined, elaborated and above all melodious neo-classical tendency which evokes the current works of Jean-Philippe GOUDE. The violin, the flute, the keyboards build often delicate, airy, picturesque, Debussy-like pieces with dreamy or nostalgic ambiences. A kind of present classical chamber music which possesses the past from the future. "Revocation - A World Of Illusions 1989-2001" is a beautiful double-compilation.

Shadowyze is an awesome rapper, and all his music has important messages. Unlike his other albums, which were solely about the oppression of native peoples, this album has a few songs that are about other things, such as the loss of a loved one and the ill effects of stealing. Excellant CD, definitely worth the purchase.
