About the Artist
Chops, Peril-L and Styles started the Philadelphia based Mountain Brothers back in 1991. In 1996, the MB's independently released an EP and won the Sprite sponsored Rhymes From the Mind Contest. They went on to record a Sprite commercial for a radio ad campaign which was played nationwide on urban radio. In 1997, the MB's signed a record deal with Ruffhouse/Columbia Records and released the 12" Paperchase b/w 5 Elements. While the single garnered underground praise and broke into the CMJ Top 40 rap charts, the MB's shared creative differences with their label and ended the relationship in 1998.

Nonetheless, the MB's perservered and in 1998 released their debut album, Self: Vol. 1 on their own independent label, Pimpstrut Records. The single and video for Galaxies (the next level) gained massive radio play at the college level and topped almost every college radio chart. This paired with the exceptional video landed the Mountain Brothers on MTV, MTV2, Much Music and various other video shows around the globe. This exposure caught the attention of Nike who linked up with the MB's for three Nike commercials for the NBA playoffs.
