5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best hard/alterna-rock CD's I have ever owned..........2005-01-01

If you listen to mainstream radio today, you know that the number of modern and alternative rock bands out there seems to be growing exponentially. With such a large number of very similar artists, it's quite rare that we find that one sticks out above the rest. This is where Breaking Point comes in, and the sad thing is that you won't even get to hear them on those very radio stations. This also speaks volumes about the current state of radio-America, but that piece shall be saved for another day. This CD is not your derivative, soft verse/hard chorus music that circulates through the airwaves constantly; no, these guys cover all ends of the hard rock spectrum (although I don't believe I heard any solos, but I could be mistaken), from the epic title track, to the softer "Live For Today," all the way to the album's finale, the all out rocker "One of a Kind," which was actually just tacked onto this later pressing of the album (the band hadn't even recorded it at the time of the original of pressing of the album, but included it once it became the theme song for the WWF's Rob Van Dam. And yes, it was WWF, not WWE back in those days). Yes, many of the songs do tend to follow that softer verse/hard chorus formula we all know so well, but it is not driven into the ground and doesn't ever make the album seem stale. Even with this, the band makes the songs catch your attention, as each song has heaviness even when it goes through the softer moments. Let me put it frankly: you will not go from an acoustic, soft sung verse to a screamed hard chorus, the stereotypical routine for bands in the alternative rock genre. If I had to compare these guys to some more well known bands, I guess I would have to go with a more rocking, somewhat darker version of Nickelback, or maybe a less metal/more rock influenced Godsmack. Don't hold those comparisons against these guys though; I was really struggling to come up with something. The standout tracks on this CD would have to be "Coming of Age," with its extremely catchy and memorable chorus, "One of a Kind," because it is just a generally excellent rock song, and "Live For Today," with its acoustic beginning leading into the slightly distorted conclusion-makes for a very good build up. Other noteworthy cuts include "27," featured on "The Scorpion King" soundtrack, and "Brother," which actually features Josey Scott of Saliva. I would have given this CD 5 stars (and it actually should be 4.5 anyway), but the only thing that brought it down was the mere fact that it did have that cliched mainstream rock formula in it every now and then. Other than that, this is a beautifully crafted record, and a must have for anyone who wants (or needs) to see what real rock is all about, and yet can still remain accessible.

3 out of 5 stars Average present, very bright future.......2003-04-05

This is the kind of album I like to hear. Not because of it's own greatness, but after listening to this kind of album, you just know you've stumbled upon a band that will make great albums eventually. Want proof ? Just check out the last song on this album : One of a Kind. The original album didn't have that song. It ended at number 10, Under. One of a Kind was added later when they started playing it as Rob Van Dam's theme in the WWE. You can just hear the difference between that track and the others.

As for the rest of the tracks, they go from ok to pretty good. The main problem I see here is that Breaking Point seems to have a problem with the chorus part of the song. Coming of Age would have been excellent with a better chorus. Same goes with Live For Today. They aren't bad, it's just that they could have been better. There is one song I wouldn't change, and it is Brother. The lyrics are good and the part where Saliva's singer does his thing is just great.

Before my final thought, I'd just like to note that the cover art of the CD is really well done. So good job by the artists there. So, to sum it up, I actually don't recommand buying this album. I just know there's something much bigger just around the corner, waiting...

Listen to to breaking point brings a breath of fresh air to listening to music, with the recycled raido waves and every one trying to sound the same few bands broke away from the norm, and I belive Breaking point is one of them this band has the most potential I've seen in a long time. Falling down was one of the songs that cought me by suppise then it was one of a kind which was music to my ears. Over all one of the best CD's I've purchased in a long time

Album Description

Still considered one of the pioneers of gothic rock, Clan Of Xymox deliver their eleventh CD in 22 years. Exhibiting a more mature sound, this release leans more towards dark rock than gothic, with subtle keyboards overlaid with guitars and live drum sounds. Ronny Mooring's deep, sensuous vocals accentuate the music and bring forth the deeper meanings of the songs.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good...but not their best.......2007-07-17

Although a bit calmer than the past few recordings from Clan Of Xymox, it does have a few engaging moments. I think the best track is Be My Friend.

Ronny's voice is as rich as ever, it just the songs are a little flat. Kind of tired sounding in feel.

Clan Of Xymox has issued some masterpieces, but this one isn't one of them. It's good, but just in an average sort of way. It has been compared to the early yeas of Clan Of Xymox, but I couldn't see that. This is present day Clan without the EBM/ Electro in it.

Buy it if you are a Clan fan, but if you're looking to get something from them, get Farewell, Hidden Faces, or Songs From The Underground

5 out of 5 stars Great artist.......2007-01-05

Ximox is now an a clasical electronic-dark music conceptual artist. And this one album is a show of this.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as these user ratings are giving it.......2006-12-14

One of the only other somewhat negative reviews of this album pretty much summed up exactly what I wanted to say. Farewell is the best COX release in years and this follow up feels like it was more of a side-project that Ronny worked on in his basement with his laptop. There are some decent tracks here, but it is marred by 3 or 4 duds at the beginning and towards the end of the album. I've come to realize that if I skip 4 tracks on this album, it sounds much better, like Farewell actually. If this had come out 5-10 years ago when COX were putting out much worse stuff, I would have been happier with this album. But as a follow-up to Farewell, this comes off as a rushed catalog-filler album.

I tried to like it as much as Farewell but I just couldn't. And to try and compare it to Medusa is just rediculous. If there hadn't been so many 5 star reviews, I would have given it 3 stars, but I felt obligated to balance things out a bit.

5 out of 5 stars best xymox album!!!!.......2006-08-13

this is the best xymox album you can buy!!!they came a long way!!!you will not be disapointed!!!i own all the albums!!this one made it to the top!!!

5 out of 5 stars totally addictive.......2006-07-23

A breaking point you say?Well , not entirely, the Cox do what they are good at here and that is realising addictive and effective melodic moods gothic music without losing themselves in endless dwelling like so many other goth acts appear to be enjoying.
No , on "Breaking Point" they bring an even more mature sound that is alienating them more and more from the lesser gods. There is a bigger stress on the guitars which get a darker rock taint, but it stays very much the COX sound we all love and enjoy. Add to that Ronny Moorings's deep vocals and you can only but be perplex of what you hear. The summit of this pot pourri can be heard on " Weak In My Knees" where guitars and synths are 100% balanced out. Another highlight is " She's Dangerous" and there are many others I could name here. Honestly, of the 5 albums I have from the COX this is definitely a band showing itself in its full maturity. They hit and did not miss at all with an interesting balance between upbeat & more moody songs!

3 out of 5 stars Overall, it's boring, but shines in a few spots........2006-01-29

The first song I ever heard from this album was "Show Me A Sign." I liked it, and I decided to go ahead and grab this CD.

The first track, Show Me A Sign is a great starter--but it doesn't get much better than that. Standout tracks on this CD include Show Me A Sign, How Does It Feel, Had Enough Of You, and Reality Show.

Other than those, the rest seem like fillers to me, and they don't have any interesting quality. Some of them even sound a bit country-ish to me and that just doesn't seem to fit well. Overall, it's boring, but it stands out and grabs you in a few spots!

For the record, I have never heard "Coming Of Age" except for one track from it and I didn't like it too well (the song was "Brother"). It's good to see them get away from the ever-so-common heavy stuff, but they could have done a lot better on this album.

3 out of 5 stars Shines in spots, but an overall disappointment.......2005-11-03

Let me say from the get go that I am not the type of person who wants a band to follow up a stellar debut with a carbon copy of a sophomore effort. I believe change is good, and melody can be good. However, this is not the case with Breaking Point's "Beautiful Disorder." They had an outstanding debut with "Coming of Age" that fused melody with lots of heaviness in a truly great way, but they just fall a little short on this album.

I really did not even realize this album had come out until I saw it in a store one day, and I immediately picked it up just because I had been awaiting a follow-up to CoA for quite some time. The label said "Show Me a Sign" was the lead single, but not having heard anything at all off this album, I came in completely blind. Let me just go ahead and say that "Show Me a Sign" is not one of the better songs on this album. It's not inspiring in the least sense, either through melody or heaviness. It just seems a little too written for radio, and it lacks the energy that some of the other songs on this album possess.

But, other than that, I will go ahead and cover the positives on this album. The highlight of this album is definitely the third track, "All Messed Up." Here is my proof that I am not looking for CoA 2; this song is unquestionably the most melodic Breaking Point has gotten over their two albums, and they do it perfection here. Other tracks which I would consider to be standouts would be "Reality Show," which is yet another example of BP getting the melody down very well, though not in the acoustic-ish sense of "All Messed Up," as well as "Never Walk Away," which I would say is the best blend of heaviness to melody on the whole album. The verse has got a nice degree of heaviness to it, then the melodic chorus kicks in, and it all works beautifully. "Promise Keeper" isn't bad either, and "Don't Let Go" is pretty good as well.

Now, my beef with this album. I'm not going to lie; I miss the heaviness of CoA. I like the melody on this album, until it gets to the point where it is overdone, which definitely does happen. The melody is good in small doses, but it just gets to be too much. Granted, the band does make an attempt to get heavy on "Had Enough of You," but it just comes across as a really cliche heavy riff and actually rather cheesy lyrics. That can be said for a lot of these lyrics though. To a degree, they are sincere, and it's obvious they weren't going for Shakespeare here, yet at the same time it seems as though they could have tried a little harder. Even the track which I think is the best, "All Messed Up," has slightly cheesy lyrics at times, but, what can I say, I love that song.

If you're just discovering Breaking Point, definitely pick up "Coming of Age" first. If you're a tried and true Breaking Point fan who just happened to miss out on this album, hey, you might as well check it out, just keep an open mind. If you're a casual fan, though, who got into them for "One of a Kind" and "Coming of Age" or "27," you want to sample this one before purchasing it, because the heaviness that made those songs is great is gone. But hey, I only spent $10 on it, and the songs I really, really liked were worth that much, so it wasn't a total disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars (They are) Coming of Age.......2005-10-15

This disorder is truly beautiful... One of the greatest CD's released in 2005! Ihad never heard of BP when I picked them up some time back this year and I was taken by the sound. In fact I was taken as far to say that I searched Amazon for this band to see if they had any other previous releases and to my appeasement they did. I ordered it and they sounded as great in '01 as they do in '05. Now when I bought these CD's they had absolutely no airplay (why was beyond me), their sound was similar to that which dominates radio and they are signed to a great rock label. However, they have garnered enough attention that the station program directors can no longer deny them a spot. What makes them so special is they have mastered a sound that their successors have stolen without giving proper credit... the incorporating of nü-metal with a twist of emo. If you like Crossfade, Acceptance, Hawthorne Heights or the likes of bands like them, you'll love this CD. No you'll love this band. Buy their CD and testify how accurate I am in my testimony.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best rock albums to date (in 05').......2005-09-11

Breaking point's "offical" debut "Beautiful diaster" is one of the most entertaining modern rock debut's I've heard in a while. It's not overly emotional, nor does it rely on trendy cliched tempo changes or harsh screaming. It is what it is, straight-forward rock with a hook-heavy sound. Perhaps the strongest aspect of "bp" is their lead vocalist, who's well-pitched, melodic vocals pace well through the music. breaking point doesn't stick to just one style either. some of their songs are slow and thoughtful, others harder but acessible, and some even fly at a post-punk pace. With each track coming in between 3-4 minutes, nothing ever gets boring or hard to sit through, and unlike so many others records where you have to skip track's, "beautiful disorder" is good song for song. As another reviewer has already stated, this band should be HUGE! They've got my vote, thats for damn sure. BUY TODAY!

Album Description

Breaking Point was the debut of Freddie Hubbard's first working group after leaving the Jazz Messengers. The quintet is highlighted by the searing alto sax and rich flute of James Spaulding and powerful, musical drumming of Joe Chambers, who also composed "Mirrors". The music stretches the limits of hard bop with innovative, cutting edge compositions and solos. Added to the original album are two alternate takes, originally issued on a 45 single.

FREDDIE HUBBARD, trumpet; JAMES SPAULDING, alto sax, flute; RONNIE MATHEWS, piano; EDDIE KHAN, bass; JOE CHAMBERS, drums

5 out of 5 stars Brake for "Breaking Point".......2004-06-30

After a brief absence in the Blue Note catalog, it is wonderful to see Freddie Hubbard's "Breaking Point" reissued via the RVG series. Though I have to confess, it would have been nicer so see rarer OOP titles like "Here to Stay" or "Blue Spirits" back in print instead. In fact, "Breaking Point" is the studio album Freddie made in between those two aforementioned titles. This May 7, 1964 session features Hub on trumpet, James Spaulding on alto sax and flute, Ronnie Matthews on piano, Eddie Kahn on bass and Joe Chambers on drums. The four Hubbard original compositions show the trumpeter moving away from his straightforward Messenger grooves to more of an avant-garde/free form style. With that being said, the album's wildest track is the Chambers-penned "Mirrors." The drummer (BTW, making his Blue Note debut here) was an amazing writer and IMO should have been given his own Blue Note session as a leader, though many will argue the second-half of Bobby Hutcherson's "Components" is basically just that. Finally, the disc's two alternate takes are shorter versions of "Blue Frenzy" and "Mirrors," which were paired for 45 single release back in the day. While not Freddie Hubbard's finest session, "Breaking Point" is certainly worth braking for.

3 out of 5 stars Finally, another album.......2003-05-10

Lunatic Calm creates another Electronic CD that doesn't fit the mold. They continue to fuse different music styles together to create a more Alternative /Electronic sound, and on this album, more ambient type tracks. The 1st album has more "Grit" & "Edge" - and that's what I like about LC. This album is good - just lighter. Mb

5 out of 5 stars An excellent folow up........2003-04-06

Lunatic Calm has always been an excellent band. I had been looking forward to some new material from them for quite some time now. This new album does not dissapoint. It's got that same great downtempo style from their first works except a lot of the songs are now more mellow and relaxed.

Beatbox Burning and Shockwave are the two hardest track on the album and will undoubtedly be favorites of fans of the original album. The rest of the tracks are a very different yet very familiar at the same time. Think of it as an evolutionary step for the band. My favorite track is 'I Go Wild', it didn't get to me at first but sort of grows on you. Has a very nice ambient feel to it.

This CD is great, if you're already familiar with this band and liked Metropol you'll love this. If you haven't heeard of Lunatic calm before give it a whirl. This is some great techno/industrial music that you can listen to over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Great but More Dancy Than Metropol.......2003-01-30

This album is much less dark than metropol but still dark. Shackleton is quite unique with his vocals. Unlike most singers these days, he doesn't scream or strain his voice. but anyway, Here is a track by track review for this CD:

1. Beatbox Burning- Hard driving dance song with great drums - 9/10
2. Sound of the Revolution- Quite cheerful medium tempo song with great chorus- 9.5/10
3. Borderliners- Slow song with a very airy feel and great bass- 8.5/10
4. Neverstop- Very similar to Beatbox Burning. Very anthemic- 9.5/10
5. I go wild- Slow song. not bad- 9/10
6. Your Future- Slow song with nice strings and piano mixed with synths and drums- 8/10
7. Yesterday- Beautiful short ambient song- 8.5/10
8. Shockwave- Certainly a shock after Yesterday. Realy cool acid synths, bass and guitar. Hard fast song- 9.75/10
9. Liberation Radio- Best decsribed as funky, lots of bass- 9/10
10. Nobody- Another very beautiful slow song with great strings- 9.75/10

11. Resurrection City- Sounds a bit like Neverstop, Hard, very fast, long too- 9.5/10
12. Revolution Rewind- WOW! AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR! slow version of track 2 with more dark atmosphere- 9.75/10

This is a pretty good CD. The kind of CD you drive down the road with the bass up really loud.
Best song- Nobody
Runners up-Neverstop, Revolution Rewind, Resurection City, Shockwave, Yesterday, Beatbox Burning
Total Score-9.5/10

5 out of 5 stars a revolution that will neverstop burning your beatbox.......2002-12-28

this Cd is great I think it is better that metropol. there are more fast songs and cool words (no bad words) my favorite songs are beatbox burning sound of the revolution neverstop i go wild and shockwave.this is worth the money they are all a bit fast but there are really fast ones and the rest are about the same. get it if you have metropol and if you like breakbeat and techno music. great cd. well bye and buy this cd.

5 out of 5 stars This is what sold me..........2002-02-09

I read this review on Virginmega.com (http://www.virginmega.com/default.asp?aid=7D0)
and it sold me on the album. It's well worth the money. "Breaking Point is a tremendous album with countless musical and emotional layers that any self-respecting music lover will relate to, especially those with an appreciation for intricate production that embraces live playing and beats from genres of jazz and rock."--From Kim Taylor's review

3 out of 5 stars How about some Hardcore???.......2004-12-09

Double Cd. Both cd's are banging. Disc one has the up to date music and the boys go off...They take small shots at Rocafella records and for a mixtape most of the songs have original beats. This is not a throw together mixtape it is the truth..

Disc two is a good addition to your hip-hop collection..It has rare and unreleased material on it. It has a couple songs on there that should have been on that 10 yrs. and gunnin' cd. Premier did most of the trks so u know it's hot...This will make you really want that new M.O.P. whenever it drops...Hotep!!!

2 out of 5 stars sub par.......2004-09-17

Little to like on the first CD. A few decent tracks on the 2nd CD. MOP has so much talent, they only need some decent production to really shine. You just don't see that here. I got 2 CD's for the price of one but I still don't feel I got my money's worth. A shame.

5 out of 5 stars IT'S F**KIN' CRAZY 'DADDY'!.......2004-07-30

THIS ALBUM IS THAT FIRE FROM BEGINNING TO END, ANY NI**A AIN'T FEELING IT NEED TO BE FOUND BY CADAVER DOGS! HOLLA!

3 out of 5 stars This tape leaves you wanting more........2004-07-26

This mixtape has its hot moments, but in general M.O.P.'s verses are short even though they are good. Some times they rhyme on a nice beat but they only have one verse then the track plays out. There aren't enough verses. Some of the songs are not up to M.O.P. standard but since its a mixtape I just enjoy having something to listen to until Ghetto Warfare. When they first dropped Warriorz I had that in my player for like 2 months straight. That album was M.O.P. at their best. I want that kind of heat on Ghetto Warfare. There are small hints of that heat on Marxmen Cinema but don't expect too much its only a mixtape.

3 out of 5 stars Furious - Breaking Point .......2005-12-15

Furious album "Breaking Point" (2005) dropped last month. This Bay Area artist is still virtually unknown to the commercial Rap scene, this is his 4th album. After a brief intro Furious gets things started with "One Shot", showing his hunger to make it. E-40 and Stres of The Federation drop in for the bouncy "Take You Down", then Furious talks to an ex on "Out Of My Mind". The Game makes an appearance on the lackluster "We Rock More". Furious gets introspective on "Where Do I Go", then delivers some "History" taking it from the 70's back. A number of average tracks follow, then San Quinn and Furious collab for the laidback "Round Da World". Furious goes deeper on "Survive", then collabs with Blue Chip for "Blood In Blood Out" a track dedicated to his boys. My favourite track is the closer "Remember" feat. Planet Asia & Ghazi, a throwback type track, where Furious talks about his birth, and growing up. This seems like one of those sleeper albums that no even takes the time to review. Its a decent release, personally I find the club tracks repetitive, and some of the production bland. Overall I give "Breaking Point" a passing grade. 2.5.

5 out of 5 stars Thrash/ speed metal with no complaints!!!!.......2006-06-01

Mike Howe was an incredible vocalist, sure is one of the best back in the day. Heretic was not too popular, but their music is aggresive, with great solos and fast drumming with some double bass. In my opinion, this is their best album, better than "Torture knows no boundary".

4 out of 5 stars Bring the heresy!.......2005-03-19

mike howe has an amazing voice and brian korban is a guitar god!
you can also hear howe on metal churches "human factor", "hanging in the balance", and "blessing in disguise", while korban can be heard in (ironically) reverend, the solo band of david wayne, the guy mike howe replaced in metal church!
