There are no more proficient or imaginative practitioners of early music than the members of the Baltimore Consort. Their programs are invariably intelligent and involving, and the performances--well, you just have to hear them. Faultless musicianship and a real sense of style characterize every interpretation and arrangement. This disc features music of Renaissance Scotland--songs, dances, airs--both lively and lyrical, serious and humorous, performed by a colorful variety of period instruments and, often, the beautiful soprano of Custer LaRue. The Baltimore Consort, an ensemble of six players, was founded in 1980 with the purpose of performing 'broken consort' pieces of Elizabethan origin. 'Broken' here refers to the instrumentation - treble viol/violin, flue/recorder, lute, cittern, bandore and bass viol. Their repertoire expanded beyond these beginnings to include broader British fare, as well as French and Italian music of the time. This is a happy expansion, as it made this disc of Scottish music possible.

The Baltimore Consort play with life and vigour, with a good deal of improvisational flair, not being bound to texts and going through the production of notes as if mechanically. This is true to the spirit and nature of the early music, in which performers often had to 'play by ear', neither being able to read music nor having printed music even if they could.

The music here has a definite Celtic flavour to it. This disc represents 'music fyne', traditional native songs, and English imitations. Scottish courtly music was influenced both by England and France, but put its own unique accent to it. Indeed, most of the words to the songs performed here are in Scots, a dialect of English that had a strong literary flowering in the sixteenth century.

The names of many of the composers of these pieces have been lost to history, particularly the more folk-song oriented ones. Music represented here is as early as 1538 and as late as 1719, nearly 200 years of Scottish musical history.

Added to the regular consort players are Edwin George (playing bagpipe and recorder), and Alice Kosloski as a vocalist (alto). The regular players include Mary Anne Ballard (viols), Howard Bass (bandora), Mark Cudek (cittern and bass viol), Custer LaRue (vocalist/soprano), Larry Lipkis (viols), Ronn McFarlane (lute) and Chris Norman (flutes). Some artists are known from other Dorian productions, such as Ronn McFarlane on the lute in the collection 'Greensleeves'.

This is music that is interesting, flawlessly performed, entertaining and has a quality about it that makes it both ancient and current at the same time. A wonderful recording, this is a real treat to the listener interested in Celtic music, Renaissance music, and folk music.

This cd is so pretty! I love scottish music, and there isn't a single song on this alphum i don't like. And that's coming from a 14 year old girl who dresses in black and listens to Marilyn Manson...@_@....eh, I always had weird tastes. I think i'm the only one my age who listens to Malice Mizer, Dir en Grey, Gackt,Morning Musume, Enya, and Bach....AHHH! what have my parents spawned!?!? . .oh, well...
I think that only a closed minded person wouldn't like this alphum (you know, people who only like modern music and only ever wear the -latest fashions' . . .[cough] . . ) But then again, every one's entitled to their own opinion....

The Baltimore Consort knows that Renaissance music is not only for the people interested in scholarly music that are studying for their finals. Of course, they are using period instruments and techniques in a very informed manner. However,they realized that the most important thing about music is find.

I'm a Baltimore Consort junkie, and this album is entirely at fault. It's the first one I ever bought, and I got hooked. The first track starts off with pipes breaking into a lively song. Who needs to understand the words? The period instruments on this album give it a different sound; it's not classical music in the way you grow up thinking (Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, etc.). It's popular music-- of a different time. Really, really oldies. It's very hard to explain, but if you're thinking about getting a Baltimore Consort album, I'd say to start with this one. It's a great example of their style, and lots of fun to listen to.

Like the Music of Scotland? You'll LOVE This!.......2000-12-21

If you enjoy the musical sounds of Scotland, this album is a must-have. Custer LaRue's vocals, Chris Norman's flutes, Ronn McFarlane's lutes and Edwin George's bagpipes will transport you to Renaissance Scotland. And if you've heard these tunes before by other performers, give the Baltimore Consort a chance to show you what quality Renaissance music is all about! While this album is more vocally driven than some of the Baltimore Consort's other albums, it is an enjoyable offering that will only add spice to your music shelf. The songs here are grand examples of the fine Scottish music of the 16th-18th centuries, and will be enjoyed with perhaps as much zeal as the instrumentals. There is a fine musical rendering of the Lord's Prayer in "Our Father God Celestial" on this album, a favorite of mine. There are two bagpipe tunes, which no Scottish album could be without. Lovers of Celtic music (like me) will no doubt enjoy this album, as it is yet another by the Consort that has been played and replayed in my household.

This disc offers 56 pieces from 17th-century compilations, probably best described as early equivalents of the fake books that popular musicians use today. These dance tunes and songs were the pop music of their time, now turned into "classical music" entirely by the aging process. McFarlane bounces through these catchy tunes with great verve; he's obviously having a good time with the music. The mandora is a small member of the lute family, pitched an octave higher than the two other early lutes McFarlane plays. It sounds rather like a ukulele. There is no profundity to be heard on this disc, but it's highly entertaining. As usual with Dorian, the sound quality is superb. --Leslie Gerber

I'm a Baroque musician and also a massage therapist. This is one of the CD's I use when I do massage; I've heard it now hundreds of times, and it still delights. Some very haunting, beautiful passages and excellent throughout. I agree with the other reviewer's assessment that I've never heard a bad performance on a Dorian recording.

Liltin' lute.......2000-05-19

Ronn McFarlane is the perfect man for the job. These pieces for the lute and mandora are what you'd expect from the time and place they were written. Surprising how many of the tunes sound like they were written yesterday. On some you may want to kick up yer heels a wee bit. Sonically, this CD is a gem; crystal clear sound. I've lent this to several persons and so far I've heard no complaints. McFarlane's Dowland CD is highly recommended also.

As I keep saying, I have never heard a poor performance on a Dorian label, and their record remains intact with The Scottish Lute (DOR-90129) and Highland King: the Scottish Lute, Vol. II) (DOR-90257). Between the two, lutist Ronn McFarlane give us no less than 100 short excerpts from the different "Lute Books" that were so popular in the 15th to 17th centuries. There are even some examples of music for the mandora, half the size and an octave higher than a lute. This does not demand intense concentration and is excellent ambient music for relaxing or giving parties. I do wish, however, that more comprehensive notes were included and the multilingual text done away with to make room for them. But the playing is masterful and both CDs are highly recommended.

Tight Flows.......2001-11-21

This is the first hispanic rapper who's cd i have ever bought. I hang out with a lot of hispanics and have heard some other hispanic rappers, but this guy gets you hooked no matter what race your from. High Till I Die is my favorite song, anyone can enjoy this song and give it it's props. All the other songs are tight especially No Soy de Ti and Let Me Try. I think mexican rappers should get a lot more play on radio, if you don't think so just listen to this CD and you'll know what i'm talking about. Great Rapper with tight beats, much love here in Florida...out.

One Of The Best Albums I've Ever Heard.......2001-08-12

This album is amazing, it has firme beats, great subject matter, firme, great lyrics, Lil' Rob's tight flow and voice, everything

The intro to the cd is about 30 seconds long and is Lil' Rob telling the world that he's back, and better than ever, and it has a really good beat

The first song, Those Who Talk, has a great bassline, and Lil' Rob rips it up as usual with a really fast flow

The second song, High Till I Die, is a slower song, about smoking weed, it has a nice smooth slow pace to it, good to just kick back and listen to

The third song, I Remember, is probably Lil' Rob's most famous, and one of his best songs, it has a great guitar beat, and Lil' Rob comes tight with lyrics about how he grew up

The fourth song, Wickie Wicked, is the fastest by far, Lil' Rob flows just as fast and Twista, Krayzie Bone, Do or Die, and the fastest in the rap game, firme beat, and like I keep saying Lil' Rob rips it up

The fifth song, La Cantina, is one of the best on the cd, Bizz comes through with a tight chorus, and Lil' Rob raps smooth about going to the bar for a night of cerveza y tequila

The sixth song, Let Me Try, isn't only the best song on the album, it's one of the best rap songs ever, Bizz comes through again with an amazing chorus, and Rob raps about love, over one of the best beats ever

The seventh song, No Soy De Ti, is another slow song, with a really good beat, and Bizz yet again sings the chorus, and Lil' Rob talks about a woman and how she left and broke his heart

The eighth song, The Outcome, has a different, but still really dope beat, Rob tells how he's been hated on and him trying to get held back, but he still comes through

The nineth song, No One To Depend On, has a great bassline, and firme lyrics, this song is perfect for bumping in your ranfla, Lil' Rob talks about how you can't trust anyone in the rap game over a great beat

The tenth song, La Cantina Remix, is just as good as the original, the song is basically the same except the beat is a little different, a few lines are changed, and Bizz sings a completely different chorus, great song

The last track is the outro, it has the same dope beat as the intro, and is Lil' Rob talking about he has the last laugh, and no one can hold him down, and no one can

Overall this album is amazing, one of the best Chicano albums ever made, VMF came through with really dope beats, Bizz came through with some bangin hooks, and as usual Lil' Rob come through and retains the title as the Best Chicano Rapper Ever

Damn that is my song to live by. (well one of many) Cause its hella true you know. Those who know don't talk and those who talk don't know. But this CD is tight. This was the first Lil Rob CD i bought after hearing my girl play it. Its also the CD i have introduced other people too, and have them hooked on Lil Rob. His beats are great to kick it too, or to just relax. If you haven't got this CD or have it and don't have any of his others you should get them. All of them.

High Till I Die.......2001-03-13

High Till I Die was a toda madre. I could bump that one all day. The CD has some smooth music on it. It has rollas you can just get lifted on. If you liked Lil' Rob's other CDs you'll like this one. The title track was a pretty bad rolla, as were "let me try", "no one to depend on", & "i remember". Pero I have to give much respeto to track number eight, titled "no soy de ti". That track will hit you straight in the cora. To end this I will say the whole CD was firme, I just mentioned my favorite rollas.

This cd is a lyrical disaster. When you actually sit down and try to listen what "Mr. Shadow" is talking about it is nothing but killing people, which i doubt he ever has. The beat can only keep me interested for 10 seconds and when he talks about San Diego it sounds like hes never been to the place. This cd is horrible please reconsider buying it.

This is one of the best Chicano rap artist coming out of San Diego. Lyrically he is almost untouchable and with special guest Lil Rob and Mr. Lil One this is one of the best albums out right now. If you like latin rap you must have this album.

This cd is a lyrical disaster. When you actually sit down and try to listen what "Mr. Shadow" is talking about it is nothing but killing people, which i doubt he ever has. The beat can only keep me interested for 10 seconds and when he talks about San Diego it sounds like hes never been to the place. This cd is horrible please reconsider buying it.

His Lyrical Style is incriable and its backed up by some of the best beats i've heard. Every track is excellent. Till I Die Shows Shadow at his best.. THis is A must For everyone Who likes Rap Hip Hop or what ever u wanna call it... U must have it in Your Collection

Mr. Shadow flows like no other!! He cannot be touched. I have seen no one come close to the speed he has in his rapping. Well worth the money, all his cd's are.

This is one of the best Chicano rap artist coming out of San Diego. Lyrically he is almost untouchable and with special guest Lil Rob and Mr. Lil One this is one of the best albums out right now. If you like latin rap you must have this album.
