Metamorphosis
Manufacturer: Retroactive Records ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:

Product Description
In the late 80s and early 90s, R.E.X. Music was just about the coolest label on the planet for Christian hard music. Three of the big names on the roster at that time (in addition to Believer) were Living Sacrifice, Circle of Dust and Brainchild. In 1993, this trio of talent was molded together by the masterful hands of Klay Scott (then Scott Albert) on what became known as Metamorphosis. Remixing industrial was still relatively new at the time; remixing death metal was all but unheard of. And although part of the enduring value of this CD is due to its pioneering spirit, the music stands up in its own right. Over a decade later, the work of Metamorphosis is still held in the highest regard in the scene. This album was originally released on REX Records in 1993 as Brainchild, Living Sacrifice, Circle of Dust: Metamorphosis Remixes.Customer Reviews:

A lot of talent and musical variety... excellent mastering and re-mixes.

01. Brainchild - Deviate [Sawed Off Shotgun Edit]
02. Brainchild - Descend [Pit of Hell Mix]
03. Brainchild - Heldweller
04. Brainchild - Nihilistic Void
05. Living Sacrifice - Void Expression [Blank Stare Mix]
06. Living Sacrifice - Black Veil
07. Living Sacrifice - Distorted [Alternate Reality Mix]
08. Living Sacrifice - Desolate
09. Living Sacrifice - Sacrificed
10. Circle of Dust - Dissolved [Disintigration Dub]
11. Circle of Dust - Consequence [Temporary Mix]
12. Circle of Dust - Consequence [Eternal Mix]
13. Circle of Dust - Self Inflict (NOT the '95 album version)
14. Circle of Dust - Daraq
Wow. Awesome stuff. Anything from Klay Scott is worth buying, period. Aside from that, it's so awesome to see such different takes on favorite songs--like Self Inflict. I think this is the first time it saw the light of day and it and the 95 version are very similar but this one is a bit more chaotic I think and I find I prefer one over the other at times.
Consequence is an amazing song and I just love the two mixes side by side. I think I like Eternal better, the riffs sound AMAZING amped up over the industrial terror that is the rest of the song. Temporary is a more stripped-down, creepier feeling mix at first, then just gets thumping and dancy and groovy.
Dissolved (Disintigration) is like a combination of strategically placed samples (the "Let's Dance!" at the beginning is one of my faves ever) and every nightmare Cher has ever had. Let's leave it at that.
For the Living Sacrifice, Black Veil and Distorted (Alternate Reality) are the standouts. Veil is creepy with the monks chanting and all the crazy samples over the acoustic guitar and stuff... cooool. And Distorted is neat, with Klay's distinctive style over fewer synths and therefore more guitar riffage. He uses a really... catchy sample here to really flesh out the instrumental track.
Of the Brainchild... Hell, I like it all. Deviate and Descend are chugging and dancy and samply and everything you would expect from the heavier thrashier side of CoD that was the Brainchild project. Heldweller and Nihilistic Void, like Daraq and Black Veil (and at that point Self Inflict) had never been released before at all, and to date I don't think ANY of the mixes on this CD can be found anywhere else except maybe the Jack of All Trades boot.
I only wrote this much because I think this music definitely deserves a fair (glowing?) description. If you like metal or industrial at all, you should buy this CD if you can find it. And if you like that, proceed to buy the entire CoD catalog, Argyle Park's Misguided, AP2's Suspension of Disbelief, Chatterbox's Despite, anything Celldweller, Klank's Still Suffering and Downside Remixes (and, OK, Numb too)... ooh, and anything by Klay's brother Level. Verrrry good stuff there. I'm done. *takes deep breath*
Dish (but I'm thinking of legally changing my name to Motor Mouth)

Straight Ahead (+2)
Manufacturer: Retroactive Records ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:
ASIN: B000FTHM34 |
Product Description
Straight Ahead, their second album, was originally released in 1983 on Refuge Records. In April, 2003, Retroactive Records re-issued on a single disc both Straight Ahead and Run For the Darkness, but quickly sold out of all 1000 copies of this Limited Edition '2-for-1' re-issue. Sustained strong demand for these classics resulted in the May, 2006, digitally re-mastered Limited Edition (only 1000 made) re-issue of each album separately. While adhering to well entrenched melodic metal formulas, Tony Rossi forged his own style, e.g. the haunting melody of 'In My Mind,' the visceral attacks of 'Lustful Illusions,' and the high energy in-yer-face 'Reality.' These songs will blow you away with the melodic mentality of Kiss, but the ability to rock you out like AC/CD. Fans of Rez, Barnabas, Jerusalem, Ted Nugent, Rush, Triumph and all fans of quality arena hard rock will wecome its availabilty once again for a short time. This single disc re-issue also features two previously unavailable bonus tracks from their original 1980 demo.

As Above - So Below
Deliverance Manufacturer: RETROACTIVE RECORDS ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:
ASIN: B000PIIPWC |
Product Description
As Above ~ So Below is a prayer that things would be on earth, as they are in heaven. Musically, this 13th album represents a unilateral step forward in the heavy music genre; few groups have ever blended epic thrash / speed metal with the elegance and beauty of progressive metal (later period Deliverance) with such devastating skill and brutality. Never has a Deliverance album alternated so many moments of beauty (e.g.The Omen inspired opening track) with beastly moments of metallic fury and spine snapping riffs that would seem right at home on a Slayer, Believer, or early Deliverance album. The end result is arguably the heaviest Deliverance album yet. Jimmy continues to deliver vocal melodies that are as commanding as a thundering voice from above. What no one could have anticipated is that the band would deliver one of the most enormous-sounding metal records ever made. In our minds, it seems like the album is a piece of heaven here on earth, which, ironically means that the album is an answer to its own prayer! 10 Tracks / 51 MinutesCustomer Reviews:
The new is old....is new.......2007-05-04
Lyrically it's kind of all over, addressing skeptics of christianity, personal pleas to be more like Him above, and what sounds like a bite at those who use religion for personal gain. The lyrics show as much change and growth as the music from the first two albums. D started with just blatant and often direct quotes from the Bible to more allegory and introspection, yet their is really no question where they stand and hope is shining through.
I highly recommend this for any lover of metal in a progressive fashion. If it was any more technical and a little faster it would start moving into the Nevermore range. I love it and give it 4.5 stars as I really would like a song or two of just outright speed as in the old days.

World of Sand + 2
Servant Manufacturer: Retroactive Records ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:
ASIN: B000JFCTZ0 |
Product Description
SERVANT WORLD OF SAND Building on the experience and success of their first two classic rockn-roll albums, the bands third release hit the streets in 1982. WORLD OF SAND truly hit a nerve with the public, selling 20,000 albums in just the first two months alone! World of Sand combined Servant's muscular rock with a serious recording budget and major-league production. Offering up 10 polished rock tunes that sometimes hinted at the new wave direction the band would embrace on future albums. The Christian rock, apologetic 'Jungle Music' appeared on that album, complete with references to nearly all of the other Christian rock bands on the scene. The song poked fun at the critique still being lobbed by anti-rock preachers. The chorus chanted, 'Jungle music, can God really use it?' Their answer was a resounding yes. When the band toured the nation for this release, Christian rock icons, Petra were their opening act. Jungle Musicmight be described as an eerie, haunting hard rock tune, with a message that hit as hard as the music. The quasi-metal sounding Cog In the Wheel proves to be every bit as heavy as Resurrection Band, Aerosmith, and Led Zeppelin. The rest of the album features classic after classic of hook-filled rock and roll that fought the good fight against lukewarm Christianity. Ahead of its time, WORLD OF SAND is a must purchase for fans of Cheap Trick, DeGarmo & Key, Joe English Band, Resurrection Band, and Petra.Customer Reviews:
I love it!.......2006-10-24
That said, I love Servant. They remain after all these years my favorite band. We were all part of a Jesus Movement commune, the Highway Missionaries, and we didn't really have a lot of written theological texts. But after the Bible, the songs of Servant really became our systematic theology. Servant didn't just preach- they lived it. They toured constantly because they saw it as ministry. They didn't earn anything from their work, and the concerts were cheap or free, so that people could experience the music. It was the band who tore down and set up, following the mandate of their name. And there was so much theatre involved in their productions it spoiled all concerts afterward for me, as I discovered that most bands just played music!
"Two Masters" was classic Servant, suggesting that actually following what Christ says is quite a different thing from merely claiming His name. "New Revolution" is a rallying cry to joy that will inspire, and a haunting, bittersweet melody can be found in "Long Hard Fight". "Cheap Talk" uses the same theme as "Two Masters", but with stuttering inspiration that is a pleasure to listen to.
Something has always spoken to me through "Cog in the Wheel". It just seemed...so America.
"He had a number, no name,
And he was trapped in the game.
There had to be something more to living,
Then waiting to die."
Much of the money that supported our commune and allowed us to eat came from the treeplanters, who sacrificed their backs and hours of work for the good of the whole. "Treeplanter Stomp" is Servant's only instrumental, and an homage to them.
"Jungle Music" uses wit to preach against those who consider rock n'roll the devil's music- and there was a lot of them back in the day. It speaks of the fear that the naysayers have of those who aren't following Christ. My dad, Jim, and Bruce discuss the popular Christian groups of the day in a conversation at the end of the song.
And "Sudden Death" still makes me cry when I listen to it, the story of my brother Seth's death. It begins with conversation between Seth and my mom and a member of the community who would later die, and graphically takes you through the car accident, the anger of my mom at God, the loss of faith, and the beginnings of hope. I have always felt that Sudden Death doesn't end with that song, but you must continue to listen with the next song, "Come, Jesus, Come".

Caught In the Act of Loving Him
Servant Manufacturer: Retroactive Records ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD Similar Items:
ASIN: B000JF99LM |
Product Description
Servants fourth album originally burst onto the scene in 1983, with ten new studio cuts released on the bands own Rooftop Records. With their first three albums delighting headbangers world-wide, CAUGHT IN THE ACT OF LOVING HIM showcased a Spransy-influenced new-wave feel that also embraced the arena rock sound Servant was known for. This new-wave feel would eventually take over the bands 5th and 6th albums (Light Maneuvers & Swimming In a Human Ocean). Undoubtedly, CAUGHT IN THE ACT OF LOVING HIM set new standards for quality Christian rock that could stand up next to the best the mainstream rock world had to offer. Ultimately, blissful power pop made Servants CAUGHT IN THE ACT OF LOVING HIM one of the defining albums of its era, as well as one of the most influential. Servant proved to be masters at devoting themselves to the power of the hook, as well as sheer volume and gut-wrenching rock roll. Bruce Wrights hook-laden guitar playing was capable of miracles, and you'll find examples of that on virtually every cut. With pop thrills a-plenty, CAUGHT... offers an invigorating blast of feedback, muscular riffs, anthemic hooks, and powerful vocals with keyboards and beat that don't let up. From start to finish, CAUGHT...is a relentless rocker, a great album that has outlasted its era. Fans can proudly file this release next to The Cars, Cheap Trick, Duran Duran, Petra, and early 77s. Yes, its THAT good! Songs: BURNING BRIDGES - THANK GOD - FALL OUT - NOW IS THE TIME - HOLDING ON TO YOU HEART TO HEART - GAUGES - SOMETHING RIGHT FOR YOU - TIED DOWN - CAN'T GO BACKCustomer Reviews:
One Of My Favorite Albums, By My Favorite Band.......2007-03-12
If you want to be technical and wanted me to list my favorites from the album, I could list ten of them. Considering this is a ten song album, that obviously includes all. But besides the one I mentioned, I'll also include "Holding On To You" (written by guitarist Bruce Wright, and arranged by my favorite keyboardist Matt Spransky), "Heart To Heart" (I enjoyed the performance of this song live), "Gauges" and "Something Right" (both of which have a fun sound), and "Tied Down."
I highly recommend this for your record collection.
Good Music.......2006-10-24
Servant was the type of band that didn't make as much money as they might, for they wanted to be true to the message. Not their message, or even their sound, but The Message. Most Christian groups have their biggest following among Christians. But most Chrisian groups don't preach to Christians, calling them to return to the way of Christ. Servant consistently spoke about poverty and justice, about the call to live in poverty with Christ and care for the poor, to truly be community to each other and not just a church, to go out and be The Church. This was especially true in Now Is The Time, where a lasor would map out the entire world as Servant played, becoming the first major Christian group to use lasors in their sets.
A little note: That's Randy MacDonald on the front cover, the bus driver for the band. He was the only one at the time who had reflective sunglasses, so he got on the cover.

New Old School Hardcore Punk.......2005-02-02
In this extremely angry assault, the guitars are loose and the vocals are spat out like a chain saw. The tracks flow so well that if left on repeat, the beginning and end of the album are likely to go unnoticed (which is not a bad thing considering this only clocks about 35 minutes). The drums are crisp and tight, keeping the rest of the band on track. Though well produced, this definitely has a raw edge that will likely appeal more to the hardcore punk crowd than the musicians' death metal fans of late.
I want more!!
CAUTION: MAY CAUSE PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS.......2004-11-10
When played loud enough, this album does become a public health hazard: inhuman, terrifying vocals; ballistic drumming; and guitar riffs that are probably illegal in at least several states.
This is every headbanger's dream: members of Napalm Death, Melvins, and Brutal Truth get together in a garage for a few beers, hit 'record' and bring the pain. What else do you want? It is absolute rawness, completely free of masturbatory guitar noodling, vocal sentimentality or fancy production. Brutal, relentless, skullcrushing hardcore the way we all want it.
One of the best punk releases this year........2004-08-07
I trashed mine.......2004-07-26
I could maybe see someone giving this 3 stars, but 5? Have you heard bands like shadows fall, arch enemy, dimmu borgir, susperia, pantera, I could go on and on. Anyone that would give this 5 stars is either in the band, or knows the band. With all that aside, I should mention the production stinks, its very garage sounding. I also love Napalm Death and the Melvins but this is s h I t. I busted mine up and put it in the trash
